Editorial Welcome to the February issue of Meldreth Matters.

I’ve enjoyed a reduced workload this month as Robin Farbridge designed the layout of the magazine. Many thanks to Robin for his continued help.

We have another varied issue for you, with news of what is happening in and around the village, several letters and, of course, the regular items from village clubs and groups.

The Village Hall Trust has managed to fill the vacant post of Treasurer, that was advertised in the last two issues of Meldreth Matters. However, they are still looking for a Chairman and Secretary to join the Trustees. Please see page 48 for further details if you think you may be able to help.

This Month’s Cover Picture This month’s cover picture is one that I took in December 2018 from Footpath 6 alongside the River Mel. As you can see, it was a beautiful sunny day and I took quite a few photographs that day as I walked around the village.

The photograph shows the old otterhound kennel, which is located at the rear of Longmead on the High Street. In the late 1950’s otterhounds were housed there when the house was owned by the Jackson family of Fowlmere.

Information on the history of Longmead, the River Mel, Melwood and Meldreth’s footpaths can all be found on Meldreth Local History Group’s website, www.meldrethhistory.org.uk.

Holy Trinity Electoral Roll In accordance with the Church Representation Rules, a new church electoral roll must be prepared in advance of the 2019 Annual Parochial Church Meeting.

Commencing Sunday 3rd February 2019 a new Roll for Holy Trinity will be prepared, with completion by 24th February 2019.

During this period all members on the current Roll must complete a new application form; names cannot be carried forward. New applicants can also apply during this period by completing an application form.

To be included on the Electoral Roll certain criteria must be met:  Must be baptised and aged 16 or over  Must be a member of the Church of England (or of a Church in communion with the Church of England) and a resident in the parish,  or, a member of the Church of England (or of a Church in communion with the Church of England) and, not being a resident in the parish, habitually attend public worship in the parish during the period of six months prior to enrolment,  or, a member of good standing of a Church (not in communion with the Church of England) which subscribes to the doctrine of the Holy Trinity and also to declare to be a member of the Church of England and habitually attend public worship in parish during the period six months prior to enrolment.

Lift Off Choir By the time this magazine is published, Meldreth’s new daytime Community Choir called Lift Off Choir will have kicked off. So far, the response has been very encouraging and I am optimistic that the group will be a new fun and social activity for the village.

There are no upfront costs and you just pay on the day: £5 per session including tea or coffee. With no big financial commitments I hope many will be able to give it a go and try something new for 2019.

Meldreth Baby and Toddler Group meets on Wednesday mornings during term time from 9.15am to 11.15am in Meldreth Village Hall.

The cost is ÂŁ2 per family and includes a snack for the children and a hot drink and biscuits for the adults. It is the ideal group for children aged 0-4 years and their parents and carers.

Melbourn & Meldreth Women’s Group In January we held our AGM when we elected our committee members and selected the charity which we will support this year. We also issued our programme for the year and are looking forward to our next talk on 26th February at All Saints Church Hall Melbourn by Audrey Drage who will be talking about macular degeneration. The meeting begins at our usual time of 7.45pm.

Meldreth WI We all ‘Wallowed in Glorious Mud’ at our January meeting when Rex Freeman, assisted ably by his wife on the piano, gave us a talk about Flanders and Swan. Flanders and Swan first met while students at the Westminster School in London but did not form a friendship until later when they were both at Oxford. Flanders was very keen on acting and singing. He was in the Royal Navy during the war and was torpedoed twice, only to develop polio shortly afterwards. Swan, who was the pianist of the duo, was of Quaker birth and would not join the forces.

However, he did a lot to help, bringing injured troops back to England They met again in 1948 and the rest is history. From beginning in a closed down theatre to travelling the world - even having the Queen and the royal family present at one on the Royal Command Performances singing “Mud, Mud, Glorious Mud”. And … if it was good enough for Her Majesty to sing, it was good enough for us here in Meldreth to do also! A very good and happy evening.

At the meeting, we also talked about forthcoming events and outings, together with the yearly resolution list of subjects the WI would like to discuss. This is with a view to asking the Government to look further and give advice on the chosen resolution. Among the six this year was one on the subject of rural bus services - asking the government to award more money and help in rural areas. This was the one unanimously chosen by our own WI here in Meldreth and I think it will be the favourite country wise. We will wait and see what the outcome is at the next AGM. Kathleen Thompson

Letters to the Editor East West Rail I would like to thank Mr Bell for his reply to my letter in Meldreth Matters concerning East West Rail. As Mr Bell pointed out, my letter has a nostalgic edge to it but I believe it is important for people to know the history and the reasons behind the East West Rail Project.

After reading Mr Bell’s reply and once again having referred myself to the CBRR website, I remain completely unconvinced on the CBRR proposal, which in my view is still very unrealistic compared with the shorter and quicker C-Corridor route.

My main issues with the CBRR proposal are as follows: Extended mileage and journey times The CBRR Proposal requires approximately seven additional miles of brand new railway to be built from Cambridge Main station to Bedford, compared to the proposed C-Corridor route. This extra distance will adversely impact overall east to west journey times and is literally ‘around the houses’. It also requires anyone travelling from places east of Cambridge to change trains at Cambridge North for Cambridge Main station and the new station at Addenbrookes.

Conversely, anyone travelling from Cambridge Main station to Bedford and points west, would also have to change trains at Cambridge North.

This all drags out the overall end-to-end journey times, potentially defeating the whole point of East West Rail in the first place. In my professional railway experience, people do not like changing trains and to make a success of East West Rail, these should be avoided unless absolutely necessary.

A potential engineering nightmare v hugely increased costs The CBRR proposed route requires three new chords to be built off existing lines at great expense. Each end of the chord requires expensive junction point work, full signal protection and will have low line speeds due to the tight curvature. There is then the issue of ongoing maintenance and more things to potentially go wrong.

Another major drawback of the CBRR route compared to the C-Corridor proposal, is that it must deal with the Fenland soil formations just north of Cambridge which would make the new line prone to sinking. Currently, Network Rail has a big and ongoing struggle with maintaining the sinking formation of the Cambridge to Ely line north of Milton and the rough riding of trains is an unfortunate 14

consequence of this. British Rail also struggled with the sinking formation of the former Cambridge to St Ives line which I believe is now causing a maintenance headache for the guided busway. To counteract the above, the new line between Waterbeach and Madingley would likely have a higher engineering requirement and much increased and extended constructions times. Engineers recently struggled with the Ely by-pass construction which resulted in a £13m overspend on dealing with the tricky conditions of the fenland soil. The proposed C-Corridor does not have this issue; it should also be noted that the CBRR proposal would also involve cutting through prime agricultural land, itself creating its own planning blight.

Finding spare train paths on an already congested railway As someone who occasionally has to find paths for additional trains on this route, finding a spare and robust train path on this section of line is very difficult, and that’s as things stand at the moment. CBRR propose to add three additional junctions between Cambridge Main station and Waterbeach which will reduce available capacity even more. Every time an EWR train enters or leaves one of these tightly curved junctions it will potentially bring the main line to a stand, especially where long freight trains are concerned. This will severely limit the already limited spare capacity on this section of line, especially with EWR trains calling at Cambridge North and occupying that section for longer. If this option is chosen I cannot realistically see CBRR’s version the new East West Rail line getting much of a frequent service due to the above capacity restraints.

To conclude, there are two main options for EWR here: 1. A realistically costed, shorter and easier engineered option that goes virtually uninterrupted through open farmland with strategically placed parkway stations and an emphasis on fast and long distance travel.

2. A longer, much more expensive, long winded route that avoids going near villages such as Gamlingay and Wrestlingworth, but has frequent stops and longer point to point journey times, and which doesn’t directly serve the main and busiest station in Cambridge, and forces people to change trains.

In road terms, CBRR’s proposal would turn a motorway project into a slow and winding rail equivalent of the A428, diminishing any competitive edge that rail would have to link East Anglia and the west for both passenger and freight traffic. All this extra cost and time in 15

order to serve a place with approximately only two thirds of the population of Royston. In my opinion, the cost v benefit of the CBRR route just isn't there.

Note: Mr Bell may like to know that only the Sandy to Bedford section of the original line had single line sections with the Cambridge to Sandy section being double track throughout.

Greg Dash Farm Traffic I read with interest the letter in the January issue from Jane and Steve Grimes. We live on North End and agree that recently the farm vehicle traffic appears to have increased. We live on a slight bend in the road and vehicles clatter and clang along. It isn't so much the vehicle or the engine, but it is the loose parts from trailers that rattle such as the tail gate and various chains and pins that hold things in place. I do wonder if there are rubber grommets and sheaths that need applying to reduce some of the noise.

The vehicles in question certainly do drive rather keenly especially when approaching from the 40 mph stretch (thankfully it’s no longer national speed limit) and we have been woken at 6.00am by them. I'm glad it isn't just us thinking this.

Notes From a Small Garden As I write this I am a bit stiff, having spread ten barrow loads full of compost on our old flowerbeds. I know it’s worth it as the roses, campanulas, dahlias, phloxes and various other herbaceous plants have thrived since I started to do this job every December and January. I often combine it with Peter’s splendid bonfires as there’s always a lot of pruning and cutting back to do. Over the seasons the soil has improved enormously, and now when I want to put in a new plant I can be sure of being able to dig a big hole easily, without also having to dig out bindweed, couch grass and old roots first.

A week ago I went to visit Jim. He was telling me what it was like to work in a carnation nursery with six other under gardeners aged around 17; ’It was always difficult to find jobs for us boys to do in the winter’. One of the main jobs was to clean all the glass houses, check all the cuttings without overwatering them and then to scrub all the clay pots without breaking them!

This reminds me of a recent lovely visit to Bridge End Garden in Saffron Walden where I saw clay pots all clean, lying in rows in one of the glass houses. I hadn’t heard of this garden previously but read all about it in this month’s RHS magazine. The owners, the Gibson family, had houses in the High Street and in The Dutch Garden Church Street, but had no room for a large garden. Thus they built their garden on farm land on the edge of the town. The garden has several interlocking spaces, all with romantic names; the Hedge Maze, the Dutch Garden (pictured above) and the walled garden. The hedges and topiary of box and yew are refreshingly orderly, not least on an early frosty morning. One hundred years ago the family leased the garden to the town but the garden fell into disrepair in the 1970s. However, there was sufficient local interest in the garden that over the next twenty years it was 18

restored to its former glory. It is now run by the Friends of Bridge End Garden, using money from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Linbury Trust. It employs one full time and one part time gardener, with volunteer help. Do visit this treasure if you have never been there.

Jobs for February  Prune the late flowering clematis right down to twelve inches.  Prune any vines; prune winter flowering shrubs after flowering and wisterias if you can grow them - I have given up!  Continue to spread compost on flower and vegetable beds  Divide and replant snowdrops; chit potatoes.  Cut down grasses; plan the vegetable garden and make a list of what to plant when.

Good gardening now winter is truly here from Jim and me.

Neighbourhood Watch In the November 2018 issue of Meldreth Matters, we reported on fake TV Licensing emails. In December 2018 alone, 200 crime reports were made to Action Fraud in relation to TV Licensing emails, with victims reporting a total loss of £233,455. Now, these emails have become part of a larger fraud, in which criminals claiming to be bank employees are calling victims and convincing them to part with their money. The emails will use headlines such as ‘correct your licensing information’, ‘billing information updates’ and ‘renew now’ to trick people into clicking on the link within the email. Within a week or two, the victim will receive a telephone call from the fraudster claiming to be from the fraud department of the victim’s bank. Fraudsters are convincing victims they are genuine banking staff by using the personal details that the victim provided through the fake website. They then claim that the victim’s account has been compromised, and that they need to transfer their money to a new ‘safe account’:  Never answer unsolicited emails from TV Licensing. The organisation will never email you, unprompted, to tell you that you’re entitled to a refund or ask for bank details/personal information.  Don’t assume a telephone call or email is authentic. Because someone knows your basic details, it doesn’t mean they are genuine. District and County Councillors’ Reports Bus Subsidies We still await the outcome of the Mayor’s bus review and a clue as to how current subsidised buses are to remain operational in the new financial year. The total annual subsidy cost is about £2 million. The County Council has been providing that subsidy on behalf of the Mayor but contingency funds for 2019-20 have not been identified. The 127 subsidised bus with its once per day service to Royston is a true lifeline service for a number of Meldreth residents. It might be useful, therefore, for the Parish Council to write to the Mayor expressing concern for the continuation of this bare minimum service.

County Council Budget and Council Tax to be set on 5th February The level of savings required in the Council’s current draft budget is based on a 1.99% increase in general council tax and an additional 2% for the Adult Social Care precept. The Council could, if it wished, raise general council tax by a further 1%, yielding an additional £2.75m in council tax.

The Government has now confirmed that the Council will not be subject to ‘negative Revenue Support Grant’ so will not have to pay £7.1m to the Government. However, the Council was not included in the forthcoming business rates retention pilot, from which the Council had hoped for £7.67m in additional income.

Wrongful Station Parking Charges We’ve received more casework on wrongful parking charges at Meldreth, Shepreth and Royston Stations. Please be aware that at Royston (but not Meldreth), if you wait with your car for an arriving passenger within the car park for more than 20 minutes, Automatic Number Plate Recognition will trigger a significant fine. The Meldreth, Shepreth and Foxton Rail User Group is endeavouring to pool these concerns and provide basic advice – please feel free to get in touch.

Special Educational Needs One of the biggest problems facing the County Council, and other councils across the country, is meeting the needs of children and young 22

people with 'special needs' (SEND). These needs include physical disabilities, learning problems, behavioural issues, emotional and mental health difficulties. Meeting these needs is very expensive and often requires specialist help, one-to-one support and residential placements.

The current problem arises from the fact that there is a higher proportion of children being diagnosed and identified with SEND. Some of the reasons for that are obvious: better peri-natal and early post-natal care by the medical services is saving the lives of babies who, not many years ago, would have died very young. Other factors include greater domestic instability, more widespread poverty and homelessness and, more intangibly, greater 'social pressure' on young people through social media and educational demands.

Although central government makes a grant to local councils for 'High Needs', this has not kept pace with the rising costs and pressures. Nor have County Councils any longer got the flexibility in their own budgets to plug the gaps. Cambridgeshire is likely to overspend in the current year by over £6 million in a budget of just over £60 million.

Setting realistic budgets in a time of prolonged austerity is extremely difficult for local councils who are at the front line of providing these services. If we believe that the mark of a good society is one that gives priority to those in greatest need, we need to face this challenge honestly and transparently. It is of course true that sometimes more cost-effective ways of meeting needs can be found and these must always be explored and then used. But 'transformation' cannot, of itself, solve this problem. We must use whatever influence we have, locally or nationally, to provide the financial support required.

Health and Social Care Staffing In December, Susan attended Health and Adult Social Care Council committee meetings that crystallised current information on health and social care workforce recruitment and retention – an area of urgent concern: GP Recruitment There is a national shortage of GPs, with ongoing concern as a high proportion of GPs are nearing retirement and not being replaced by new recruits.

Last year, Government initiated a £100 million international GP Recruitment drive: nationally the target is 2000 new GPs by 2020; for Cambridgeshire the target is 30. The drive has been focused on GPs from European Economic Area countries, whose 23

training is recognised in the UK under European law and who get automatic recognition to join the General Medical Council’s (GMC) GP Register. At the close of the first year, Cambridgeshire’s total is three new GPs, compared to its target of 30. The programme continues and will look to expand its net to Australia. Recruits are expected to remain in the UK for three years.

‘Bed Blocking’ We hear much in the national press about ‘bed blocking’. The correct term is ‘Delayed Transfers of Care’ or DTOC, and is one of the headline issues being grappled with by Addenbrooke’s and County Council commissioned adult social care.

A key component in addressing DTOC is domiciliary care. South Cambridgeshire and Cambridge face a somewhat unique challenge in hiring enough domiciliary care workers to support people at home, due to lack of affordable housing, coupled with lack of affordable and viable public transport networks - salaries are not high enough to make the profession viable. In addition, the fall in the value of the pound since 2016 has made the profession uneconomic for much of its significant European workforce. Because South Cambridgeshire and Cambridge are anomalous in their cost of living barriers, the local shortage of domiciliary care workers is not reflected in the Government’s Immigration Shortlist – but it needs to be.

Addenbrooke’s European Staff The County Council Health Committee receives regular reports from Addenbrooke’s on staff recruitment and retention efforts. The current focus is on retaining its existing EU nationals – about 1000 people, or approximately 12% of its workforce. Together with Cambridge University, Addenbrooke’s was invited to take part in Government’s piloting of the European Settlement scheme, to be rolled out nationally on 30th March. The idea is to facilitate early settled status for staff.

Their family members, however, will have to wait until after 30th March to apply. The pilot ran from 29th November to 21st December.

Addenbrooke’s, which does not have cash to spare, covered the £65 fees. The application process operated only via a specific Home Office app on an Android device – iPhones could not be used. Addenbrooke’s purchased a number of Android devices for this purpose, but then the Home Office app proved problematic. It is unclear how many staff successfully completed the application process. Meanwhile, the legal firm Mills and Reeve were hired by Addenbrooke’s to answer staff queries and concerns. The advice to staff for guaranteeing continuing 24

residency and working rights is to apply for British citizenship, the cost of which could not be borne by Addenbrooke’s and would fall to staff.

This currently amounts to £1,330 per adult and £1,012 per child under eighteen. One must first secure Settlement Status; an application for citizenship can then be made after twelve months.

Decisions Taken  Clerk to write to Mayor James Palmer at the Cambridge and Peterborough Combined Authority with regard to our concerns about the 127 Bus Service, which provides such a critical service to the village.  To conclude the contract with 2communes for the provision of

a new PC website at a cost of £2,800 plus VAT; it being noted that this was partly approved at the December meeting.  To pay the invoice for 2017/18 and, when received and

approved the invoice for 2018/19 in respect of the village’s participation in MAYD. Noted that the Council now has two Councillors fully engaged, through direct membership of MAYD’s governance.  To engage Four Counties to install a new concrete base for the

WW1 Memorial Bench outside the Primary School at a cost of £500, the existing base being inadequate.  To continue enquiries for tree guards and suitable trees for the

recreation ground with regard to the compensation payment of £1,000 now received from Anglian Water as a goodwill gesture, following the contamination of the recreation ground.  To pay for room hire at Elin Way for events being organised

by (1) Citizens Advice Bureau and (2) the Mental Health Group, at a total cost of £20 to be met from Community Benefit funds.  To investigate replacement options for the memorial bench at

the Stocks, which was destroyed by a motor vehicle colliding with it.  To notify the appointment of Mr Iain McPhee as the Parish

Council’s representative as a Trustee of the Elin Almshouses.

implement some procedural changes in respect of cheque signatories, bank reconciliation and account security.  To appoint ROEM to provide computer training to the Clerk,

subject to a limit of £500.

Discussion Points  Futures Group projects; no proposals brought forward for decision at this meeting.

Further work continues on applications from the Bowls Club, Melbourn Amateur Dramatics Society and the Village Hall Trust.  Hedge trimming and the need to preserve vehicle sight lines.  District and County Councillors’ reports; see pages 22-25  Chairman will continue to press the developers of the

Melbourn housing development to reconsider the siting of two bicycle racks in Meldreth High Street (a S106 requirement) and to reach an agreed solution with the Parish Council.  Clearance of mud from the ditch at the recreation ground and

the possibility of dumping it on the security bund at the Council’s Mettle Hill site.  Playground: all in good working order. New chains to be fitted

to swings and further quotations for new matting still awaited.  General discussion on pressures in local authority finances and

how these political choices might in due course affect financial strategy at parish level.  General discussion on role and operations of Working Groups.  Further work is required on setting the annual precept and this

may require a special Council meeting in order to meet the deadlines for completion. The Finance Working Group will also meet to discuss a draft three-year financial plan, to form the background to decisions on precept levels and funding decisions in the future.

News From Heidi Allen, MP www.heidisouthcambs.co.uk My first meeting of 2019 was with Highways England (HE) to discuss the A14 and the A428 and I was joined by Councillors Lynda Harford and Ruth Betson. I asked for the meeting not only to be updated on the progress of the A14 but also to make HE aware of the concerns that residents and businesses have raised with me about the inconvenience created by the work.

When delivered, the A14 improvement scheme will provide significantly better infrastructure, but throughout the construction period, I am maintaining regular contact with HE to ensure inconvenience is kept to an absolute minimum and that all possible mitigation is put in place. At the beginning of January for example, I posted a video on the dedicated Brexit page in which I set out my views on the looming vote in the House of Commons on the Withdrawal Agreement. By the time you read this, I’m hoping it will have been and gone!

At the end of 2018, South Cambridgeshire received some fantastic news - Addenbrooke’s is to get a new children’s hospital. The need for a dedicated children’s hospital in our region has been talked about for longer than I have been on the scene, so it is wonderful that it will now be delivered. The Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, confirmed that up to £100 million will be contributed by Government. We all know Addenbrooke's is a centre of excellence and this new children's hospital will enable them not only to continue to provide first class care in a new purpose built hospital but will also free up valuable space in the existing building. Looking ahead, 2019 promises to be a big year for Addenbrooke’s as the Royal Papworth Hospital moves to the site and plans for a train station pick up pace!

Bringing improved infrastructure and increased funding to South Cambridgeshire are key priorities for me so I am pleased to share with you a number of recent announcements about the next financial year.

Cambridgeshire County Council received a funding boost, with an increase in core spending power of 5.7%, taking the Council’s funding allocation to £386.5 million. This increase in core spending power is more than double the average increase in England. This is a very welcome boost to spending on services in South Cambridgeshire.

The Autumn Budget also announced £6,294,319 for Cambridgeshire for adult and children’s social care to help alleviate winter pressures on the NHS. I continue to press for improved funding for our schools, and am working on a new campaign to drive the message home hard to Ministers, ahead of this year’s major Government spending review.

Cambridgeshire Police have seen an increase in their funding from central Government and in addition, the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) has launched a consultation on the Police’s share of Council Tax for 2019/20. Last year, the PCC introduced a new structure for local policing which brought an additional 50 officers to the front line. As a result of last year’s increase in the policing part of the council tax, a further 55 officers were also recruited and are now in training.

Finally, after a long and hard fought campaign, I was thrilled to learn that The Three Tuns in Guilden Morden had been saved for the community! Guilden Morden Community Pub Ltd completed the purchase of The Three Tuns on the 21st November 2018. With investment from 267 shareholders, the pub has now been saved. I want to pay tribute to everybody who has been involved in this impressive campaign – well done! They are now advertising for a pub tenant – are you interested or know somebody who might be? Although I’m a former landlady, I can’t apply but I will definitely be paying a visit and am happy to pull the odd pint!

Meldreth Preschool January was a big month for Meldreth Preschool – we moved to our new home at Meldreth Primary School, after a lot of hard work from the staff, committee and a number of volunteers. The team spent several days between Christmas and the start of term sorting, packing, organising and cleaning to try and ensure that we had everything we needed to give the children a great start to 2019. Thanks to everyone who was so generous with their time. We also welcomed back Lianne, our Manager, who is returning from maternity leave. She has lots of exciting ideas and will have introduced herself to all our new children and parents by now.

As you might expect, moving has proved a costly business as we have had to replace some toys which didn’t survive the move and some furniture which was no longer suitable for the new room. If anyone is able to donate paper to keep our budding artists well-stocked, we would really appreciate it. 1st Melbourn Guides You’re never more than a few months away from your next toasted marshmallow at 1st Melbourn Guides!

The week of bonfire night provided an ideal opportunity to have an outdoor fire with marshmallows and sparklers.

Other activities included learning to light a candle and a gas stove with matches, burning an image onto wood with a pyrography tool, and drawing a fire safety poster.

As always we participated in the Remembrance parade with a great turnout of girls; we led the parade with the Union flag, and also carried our Unit standard. We have started working on the ‘skills for my future’ themed resource, enjoying a game of spending and banking toy money, playing safely in the dark, learning about the food groups, and planning a healthy meal. This tied in very well with a Bake Off competition, for which the signature dish had to be a vegan Bolognese, the technical challenge was Eccles cakes, and the showstopper was a 3D biscuit sculpture of Santa’s grotto.

We helped at the Hub’s Christmas event, and also participated in the Christingle preparations and church service.

New skills and creativity were developed on the last week of term when the girls made Christmas table decorations from Oasis and a candle, plus foliage, and using a colourful range of cut flowers which were kindly donated by Bury Lane Farm Shop. The girls had great fun and produced some wonderful results.

Meldreth Primary School www.meldreth.cambs.sch.uk New Year Resolutions ‘…another year over, and a new one just begun!’

January heralded the annual round of resolutions, which for my class of ten year olds shed an interesting light on their current interests and concerns, personally, locally and globally!

Discussing our aims for the forthcoming year within class, we started unsurprisingly with a range of noble ambitions to get homework done more quickly, improve handwriting, learn the times tables and so forth, before exploring a wider range of possibilities within and beyond school and family life!

Becoming more active was a significant issue for resolution: Max wants to get outdoors more and practice football more, as does Finley, while Tilly and Harry are specific in their desire to walk in Melwood much more this year. A number of the children including Effie and Eva are keen to walk or cycle to school more often, both for exercise and to reduce their carbon footprints. Health and diet featured widely in the children’s suggestions: Finley plans to eat more fruit, but it’s more vegetables and less chocolate for Ollie and Effie, who also plans to drink more water. Alfie is thinking of less rather than more and promises to reduce his intake of sweets and sugar, but Annabel simply resolves to ‘make sure I eat all my dinner!’

If the children in class are able to succeed in their resolutions, I suspect that there will be a significant increase in the peace and harmony within Meldreth homes! Chris plans to ‘walk away from my brother when he is annoying me’, while Myles says he will ‘try not to argue with my 15 year old brother’. Alfie and Rhys both plan to avoid getting angry about things at home, while Ollie aims to avoid arguing with his parents (and ‘maybe my sister). Taking a more active approach, Harry will ‘be nicer my brothers and my cousins’. Harry also plans to avoid shouting while his dad is working, and indeed it is dads in particular within families who are singled out for some special attention. Tilly wants to play more games with her dad and Tom will be keeping out of his dad’s way while he is working! Dogs too will get their share of pampering in 2019! Harry will be taking his pooch for more walks in Melwood, while Effie will not only ‘learn to train a dog’, but she will 44

also treat her dog better; maybe the two go hand in hand! Finley has already resolved to train his auntie’s dog, so he may be able to teach Effie a thing or two!

Quite a number were specific in their desire to use tablets, TVs and Playstations much less, and support such aims with other, more creative pursuits: Myles wants to learn guitar and learn to cook; Oliver, to build a bird scarer and do more gardening, while Owen is determined to ‘finish building my den under my bed’, though he is also keen to practice driving his remote control car. Let’s hope he can find time for both! Annabel, meanwhile, is tuning into the young explorer within, as she states her desire to ‘visit lots of different places to learn more!’

Maybe it is a desire for increased financial remuneration that prompts Lukas to ‘want to get a job’, and Tom to ‘get some work at the Wildlife Park’. Could this be the same driver for Hay’s desire to ‘take care of valuable stuff’ too?

I conclude with a couple of thoroughly ‘twenty-first century’ resolutions that children have made. Lukas is keen to cut out the use of plastics in his life as much as he can, and Eva, as well as wanting to perfect a front handspring or backflip, resolves to change (in school first, and then hopefully in Cambridgeshire) ‘all the women’s toilet signs so that the women are not shown always wearing a skirt… because most women don’t wear a dress all the time’. Ah … there’s change in the air!

As for me, I resolve to cycle to work more often, and to visit the Cambridge University Botanical Gardens in every different season.

Mrs Plumb Many families who know the school will be interested to hear of the retirement of Mrs Karen Plumb at the end of last term. With 23 years’ experience in school as a teaching assistant and later as our financial administrator, Karen worked with five different headteachers and had become our longest serving member of staff. She has been absolutely loved by all in school, especially by the children, for her thoughtfulness, kindness and consideration for others at all times and will be hugely missed by all of us.

Volunteering Opportunities Join the Trustees of our Village Hall The roles of Chairman, Honorary Secretary and Honorary Treasurer have been held by the same people for five years. They are looking to move on and this presents opportunities for new people to manage the running of a valued Meldreth facility. We have managed to find a replacement for the Treasurer but still have to fill the following two roles: The Chairman chairs the AGM and three or four Trustees’ meetings a year. He/she acts as the Chief Executive Officer of a £15,000 a year charity – which owns the Hall and leases the land it stands on.

The Honorary Secretary is responsible for the agendas and taking notes of all meetings and is the manager of the weekday and weekend Housekeepers. He/she purchases Housekeepers’ supplies and arranges routine maintenance and repairs.

Stolen Property Recovered Detectives have released photographs of thousands of items of property recovered as part of an investigation into a prolific crime gang. They hope to reunite the items, which are believed to have come from crimes in Cambridgeshire and surrounding counties between 9th December 2016 and 9th January 2018, with their rightful owners. Last month, the gang members were sentenced to a total of 71 years in jail. They had committed more than 200 burglaries, including nearly 100 in Cambridgeshire, costing victims more than ÂŁ2 million. Gang members would mask their faces using balaclavas and smash or force open doors or windows in broad daylight. They would steal specific items, mainly high-powered BMWs and Audis, firearms, cash and jewellery, all of which they could dispose of through contacts.
