Meldreth Local History Group www.meldrethhistory.org.uk Meldreth Local History Group was formed in 2007. We meet on the first and third Mondays (excluding bank holidays) of every month from 9.30am to 11.30am at the Sheltered Housing Community Room in Elin Way. Anyone who has material to share or is interested in helping us to research the history of the village is welcome to come along.

Autumn Coffee Morning: Life in Meldreth Cottages The Sheltered Housing Community Room was filled to capacity recently as forty-five people attended a fascinating illustrated talk given by group member Alan Williams.

Remembrance Service For the first time, Joan Gane laid a wreath, hand-made by member Anna Taylor, on behalf of the Group. The Group has produced a lot of material on the war years and has researched all those on the war memorial - please see the Wartime in Meldreth on our website.

Current Projects Group members are working on a variety of topics, including Manorial Meldreth, Meldreth’s historic buildings and the history of the village’s Guides and Brownies. Please contact us if you have information you are willing to share on any of these topics.

Website We were delighted to learn that our application to the Meldreth Futures Group for a grant had been approved and we are very grateful to the Parish Council for their support. The grant, together with some of our own funds, will be used to fund an upgrade to our website, which is now almost nine years’ old. Work will begin in the New Year.

Friends of Holy Trinity www.foht.org.uk David Parr House The talk given by Tamsin Wimhurst in October provided a fascinating insight into this house, which is a ‘time capsule’ of the work of a working-class Victorian decorative artist who worked for the Cambridge firm of art workmen, F R Leach & Sons on Arts & Crafts and neo-Gothic projects.

The house is located in Gwydir Street off Mill Road in Cambridge.

Tamsin first saw it in 2009 when David Parr’s granddaughter was living there and bought it, with her husband, in 2014.

They subsequently gifted it to the David Parr House CIO Charity.

Tamsin admitted that the purchase was an act of faith and in 2016 David Parr House was successfully awarded a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to allow two and a half years of conservation work to be undertaken. None of this would have been possible without a group of dedicated volunteers, supporters and donors who have worked tirelessly to reveal the hidden world of the house. Until 2022, every £1 donated will be matched by the HLF and with Gift Aid will become £2.50.

The intricacy and uniformity of the hand painted decorative patterns is impressive and the technique of ‘pouncing’ was frequently used. With this, a decorative profile is drawn on paper and a series of small holes pierced around the profile. The profile is then held in position on a wall or ceiling and charcoal rubbed over the holes and repeatedly used to create a series of outlines for hand painting. It may sound simple but requires incredible painting skills.

Tours of David Parr House are available but visitor numbers are limited to 2,000 people per annum to avoid damage from wear and tear and also humidity. The popularity of House Tours means that the earliest bookable date is at present August 2020.

Remembrance Service and Refreshments It was lovely to see so many people walk back to the Village Hall after the 9.30am Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial in Meldreth on Sunday 10th November.

A big 'thank you' to everyone who donated cakes, decorations and their time, to make the event at the Village Hall so enjoyable, including the 1st Meldreth Brownies and all who came and helped from Meldreth Manor.

We would also like to thank the Parish Council for paying for the hire of the hall.

It was wonderful to be able to chat with people from a wide breadth of generations over coffee and delicious cake whilst observing the poignancy of the day.

As an aside, the generous donations on the day meant that we sent £102.60 to the British Legion. Many, many thanks to everyone. It was lovely to see you and we hope to see you again next year.

Melbourn & Meldreth Women’s Group We are a small friendly group and we meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month except in December; we vary our venue between All Saints Community Hall in Melbourn and Holy Trinity Church Meeting Room in Meldreth. We either have a guest speaker or in-house entertainment followed by tea/coffee and biscuits. There is a fee of £1 on the evening and a chance to make a donation to our charity of the year.

In October we met and made our decorations for the Christmas Tree Festival to be held in Holy Trinity Church Meldreth. Do come along and see what we did!

Advent is always a busy time and can get lost in the run up to Christmas but we will have been encouraged to take time out and reflect as Reverend Mary Price led us on an Advent reflection in November. We had our jewellery stall at the Autumn Fayre at All Saints Church in November and thank everyone who supported us by giving donations, helping with preparing and supporting us on the day.

We don’t meet in December. Next year, Tuesday 28th January 2020 sees us meeting for our AGM which is followed by a bring and share supper.

Notes From a Small Garden As I’m writing this, I’m thinking back to our Veg Plus Club meeting at the Dumb Flea this morning. The technique of planting trees and the importance of ivy for birds, small mammals and invertebrates for winter shelter, were all avidly discussed with several really knowledgeable folk contributing.

I have been busy planning our Tree Planting day on Saturday 30th November and I hope many of you will have left the stalls at the pub with a sapling and instructions how to plant it, as well as having contributed to the Woodland Trust, our foremost charity for the preservation of our ancient woods.

Just a few updates: the ipomoea Morning Glory flowered later than ever this year. Last year Jim won the competition of first-to-flower, on 11th September and he won again this year. But it was so late in producing the first flower, his on 8th October with Margaret on 10th and me not until 16th! What has happened to our topsy turvy flowering times? On the other hand another annual climber, the cup and saucer plant, cobea scandens is near up to the top of the thatch ridge of our cottage; the purple bell flowers have been beautiful. Next year I might try the white variety.

Now is the time to think about Christmas decorations. There are so many options for us to use our garden plants. About twenty years ago I planted a variegated holly, Silver Queen, and although it needed to be topped to avoid growing into the telegraph line, it has been worth its weight in gold!

Meldreth Primary School www.meldreth.cambs.sch.uk Performing Arts Club ‘I like Performing Arts Club because it’s all about fun and you get to be creative and use your imagination.’ (Year 4 Pupil) At Meldreth Primary School this year, children in KS2 have been given the opportunity to take part in a Performing Arts Club, where children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 take part in singing and acting activities, helping them learn new skills and building confidence as well as making new friends.

Every week, the children take part in a warm-up activity all together before splitting into two groups (Upper and Lower Key Stage) to have half an hour of acting and singing.

Last term, our focus was ‘Fairy Tales’, where the children improvised plays based on objects and ideas from traditional fairy tales. We also sang songs about magical places, like ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’ and re-wrote the lyrics which we performed to each other.

We had a special Halloween theme week, where we played “What’s in the cauldron” and created a dance to ‘Thriller’ by Michael Jackson. The children followed the steps and then choreographed their own group dances, which we then put together to create one whole group dance.

Meldreth Manor School I am sure you have spotted the scaffolding and can see that there are some significant changes taking place at Meldreth and Orchard Manor.

Since Aurora became the proprietor a few years back, there has been an investment of over £3.5 million to refurbish the accommodation for the children and young people for whom Meldreth Manor and Orchard Manor is their home. This programme of refurbishment is due to be completed in January 2020.

The autumn term has been a very busy time for Meldreth Manor School. We have grown in size to six classes as we have been able to welcome new children. We regularly enjoy trips to our local parks and nature reserves.

Being able to go shopping and practice our independence skills are also important to us. We have had a trip further afield to Nene Valley Railway. Within school we have enjoyed having visitors from our PAT dogs, miniature donkeys and Shetland ponies.

School events have included Halloween parties, Roald Dahl Day and recently we had our own SEN friendly fireworks display. Our children enjoy community learning and being involved in their community so we were particularly pleased to be made to feel so welcome at the recent Service of Remembrance.

We would like to invite all members of our local community to join us for our Festive Bazaar on Friday 13th December from 2.00pm to 3.30pm. That day is also Christmas Jumper Day in aid of Save the Children so don’t forget to wear your most outrageous Christmas Jumper. We have a packed diary of joyful events for the next few weeks as it is so important that we give our children and young people the very best Christmas experience that we can. Christmas is such an important time of year when most families would be together. That is not the case for our children and young people and the staff who will be here caring for them. So please spare them a thought. The very best season’s greetings to you all on behalf of all at Meldreth and Orchard Manor.

Pirates of the Caribbean and Beyond Learn with the WEA Royston Branch in January 2020 Explore the world of pirates from the ancient world to modern day with Dr Ian Chambers. Over ten weeks, we will examine the similarities of the practice throughout time and look at the social structure on board a golden era pirate ship, as well as dipping into popular culture and literature.

Trains: E-tickets and More E-Ticketing Train journeys from our local stations can be made via e-ticketing.

Please note that paper tickets bought at the Meldreth Station booking office make a difference to keeping our manned office in place – so do please buy from ticket officer manager Bern Parsons whenever possible!

In addition, for promotional deals and complex journey best prices, please use Meldreth Station booking office.

The Trainline app or website https://www.thetrainline.com is a good place to buy a train ticket that provides a swipe-able bar code for tapping in and out on journeys originating or terminating at our local stations. This app is set up to process rail card discounts, unlike the GTR app (see next item).

The Govia Thameslink Key Go Smartcard will be available for journeys from Meldreth, Shepreth and Foxton to Cambridge and points north, in the next few weeks. This is already available for travel south (the glitch being that Cambridge Station is operated by another train operating company, Greater Anglia, and their systems haven’t talked to each other until now).

Pedestals for Key Smartcard activation exist on both platforms at all three of our local stations. This is a work in progress still with some limitations: a season ticket can be uploaded onto the card and stored electronically, but the Cambridge Student Connect card for 16-18 yearolds cannot be uploaded electronically – a paper ticket continues to be required.

A debit or credit card is linked to the ‘Key Go’ card for tapping in and tapping out on journeys. The cheapest fare for that journey will be applied. However, for now, Railcards (16-25s, Senior Railcard, Network Card, etc) cannot yet be applied to the fare calculator.

The Key Go card is currently only applicable to Thameslink network journeys, but the expectation is that it will be applicable nationwide on all networks. Cambridge North Station Services Unfortunately, as expected, the December 2019 timetable sees an end to this through journey; passengers travelling from Meldreth to Cambridge North will now need to change trains at Cambridge. This is due to platform capacity issues and an increasingly busy and competitive timetable. The Rail User Group has lobbied hard to retain the through service for obvious reasons so this is disappointing news but we will keep at it, as the timetable is always a work in progress with two updates every year in May and December.

Semi-fast Service to London The Rail User Group is still lobbying for the return of a semi-fast London service from Meldreth, Shepreth and Foxton at peak time.

Passenger Benefit Fund Details are beginning to be announced – a full report is due soon.

Exorbitant Station Car Park Fines The Meldreth, Shepreth and Foxton Rail User Group is tackling headon what it considers to be exorbitant station car park fines at Shepreth, Meldreth and Royston and intimidating pursuit of fines by the debt collecting agency subcontracted by the car park subcontractor.

The Rail User Group would be grateful to hear from anyone who has been caught out by such an experience.

Switching Off Your Engine While Queuing - Why Not? The Meldreth, Shepreth and Foxton Community Rail Partnership has helped leverage funding for minor highways improvements at Shepreth Level Crossing, which if the Department for Transport allows it will include advisory signage for queuing drivers, asking them to turn off their engines to reduce emissions.

This is a question that comes up too for Foxton Level Crossing and junctions with traffic signals. There’s no rule saying you can’t switch off your engine!

Letters to the Editor I wanted to write and extend a fond farewell and a heartfelt thank you for four and a half wonderful years as your Member of Parliament.

I have been so proud of the vibrant, open, welcoming local communities who have shared a myriad of local successes and events with me and my husband Phil. We really do live in one of the best places in the world and it has been a privilege to create so many wonderful memories with you. I could never have dreamt that being sawn in half at the Cambourne Christmas Lights Switch On or being put in the medieval stocks at Hinxton could be so much fun! And who knew I could be so successful at village fetes – I literally cleaned up at the Eltisley tombola; opened with a rock band at Bar Hill; won the Tug of War with the ladies team at Meldreth and arrived at Whaddon in a vintage Bentley. I can’t claim quite so much success at Thriplow Daffodil Festival, where I managed to confuse the category of Best Puppy with Dog that Looks Most Like its Owner! You are a very forgiving bunch.

Race starting became something of a hobby and I was lucky enough to be invited to wave the flag at Cambourne, Caldecote, Great Chishill and the brilliant Duxford Soap Box Derby twice. A definite highlight was helping to “top out” the new Royal Papworth hospital, while a low was probably during the Steeple Morden Steam Engine Rally when I innocently told the crowd that my husband ‘likes to get on something hot and dirty at the weekend’ – I’m not sure I ever lived that one down!

I’ve been privileged to see first-hand the exceptional efforts of our public service workers as they go about their duties with dedication and brilliance. I loved spending a night on duty with the bed team at Addenbrookes; going out on shift with our exceptional police, fire and ambulance crews; and cutting open a car with the Duxford fire crew to test new equipment and I was extremely proud to welcome the Prime Minister to the Genome Campus to showcase the ground-breaking work that takes place here.

I’ve laughed out loud at the contributions made by primary and secondary school pupils during my dozens of school visits and have been humbled and inspired by the pupils and teachers within our schools. On my final day, I was especially proud to hand out GCSE certificates to Cottenham Village College’s latest cohort; celebrated like I’d won the lottery when Guilden Morden Primary turned itself around 24

for Ofsted and probably enjoyed Elsworth Pre-School’s cocktail night a little too much … hic!

South Cambridgeshire certainly knows how to party and I was lucky enough to watch the Hare and Hounds in Harlton coming back to life; Fen Drayton’s Call my Wine Bluff and Queen Edith’s RNLI superb Brass Band Concert. I dusted off my landlady skills at the Shelford Feast, pulling pints but my team and I failed miserably at Caxton’s Village Hall Quiz Night … perhaps the cheese and wine may have distracted us somewhat! I loved giving Litlington residents a taste of my Desert Island Disc selections and who could forget me being beaten

by Simon Saggers, the Green candidate in a hustings at Comberton VC! I have so many special memories and it’s just not possible to document them all here. Truly, it has been the greatest privilege to serve the people and communities of South Cambridgeshire. Thank you to everyone who shared a kind word, a thoughtful comment or a grey cell stretching learning. It has been a huge honour. To all the brilliant people of South Cambridgeshire – thank you for a wonderful four and a half years and for allowing Phil and me to build our lives here. All our love.

Neighbourhood Watch The Little Book of Big Scams You have probably not heard of this book, but a new version has been published by the Metropolitan Police Service FALCON (Fraud And Linked Crime ONline) team. The book covers the types of scam that are described here every month, but in the sort of detail that can't be included in these articles.

Meldreth Neighbourhood Watch has placed a couple of copies in the waiting room of the Orchard Surgery in Melbourn. If you would like to download an electronic copy, go to: cambs.police.uk/A-Z/Scams and follow the link to ‘Little Book of Big Scams - version 4’ at the bottom of the page. The document is a pdf so can be viewed on a computer or a smartphone (it was readable on my medium-sized smartphone). This webpage also has links to advice on specific types of scams and also there are webpages covering the contents of the Book and a lot more besides (for example business fraud) at: met.police.uk/fraud.

Local Police Surgery at The Hub, Melbourn Tuesday 10th December, 2.00pm to 4.00pm Melbourn Parish Council 31

Meldreth Parish Council www.meldreth-pc.org.uk Meeting held on Thursday 7 November 2019 The main points of this meeting are set out below in the usual summary format. The full formal minutes can be viewed in due course at www.meldreth-pc.org.uk and on the Parish Council notice board; these will be presented for approval at the next Parish Council meeting.

Discussions and decisions:  Railway issues: our County Councillor has drawn attention to the issue of fines and charges imposed at our local railway stations and the procedures being employed to enforce and collect these [see page 23]. It is suggested that if anyone feels that they are being treated unfairly they should in the first instance report the circumstances to Councillor van de Ven so that further investigations can take place.  Finance Group: against a background of high and increasing

cemetery maintenance costs, it was noted that it had been many years since the Council had last reviewed its cemetery charges and they have clearly fallen behind the charges levied by other local councils. It was agreed to set the grave purchase/reservation charge at £160 (75 year period unchanged) and the adult burial fee at £100. These revised levels are generally below other Councils’ charges but will be reviewed annually in future. The Council will also review other cemetery charges such as those relating to cremated remains. The next meeting of the Group will consider the Council’s overall budget for the 2020-2021 precept.  Futures Group: the Group website will be integrated with the

Council website and work has started on this. The Group recently discussed the role of social media in village communications. There is already a ‘Nextdoor’ group for which public membership support is growing and the Council wishes to draw this to the attention of the community as a useful resource for communication between residents on issues of topical interest, and for identifying suppliers and contractors. The website can be found through: www.nextdoor.co.uk.  Traffic Group: the first mobile Speed Indicator Device has been

installed in Fenny Lane and will shortly be activated. Discussions 32

with Highways about various traffic management issues are continuing. The Council is grateful for the co-operation of Aurora with regard to parking on the High Street approach to the Stocks junction. Attention was drawn to the deplorable state of the High Street footway in front of Maycroft and it was agreed to bring this to the urgent attention of the appropriate authorities.  Carbon Group: the Village Hall boiler replacement project is now

the subject of an application for a zero carbon grant from SCDC. The application for partial funding has been made by the Trustees with help from the Council.  Churchyard: discussions will be taken forward with regard to

repairs to the churchyard wall. These will involve the architects and churchwardens. A programme recognising priorities will be considered and costings obtained for the principal areas of work.

Following the report of a damaged lime tree adjacent to the footpath alongside the west wall, the Council engaged a contractor at a cost of £150 to remove the broken branch and to make the area safe.  Recreation Ground:

Equipment: the replacement of the kick wall at the recreation ground is a priority for the Council. A decision on materials – wood, metal etc. – needs to be taken and it is important that the chosen approach will be approved from a safety viewpoint by RoSPA. Site visits to the Recreation Ground by some leading suppliers are planned for November; they will be asked to consider options for the kick wall and for the toddlers’ play tower that is also under active consideration. The play equipment is generally in good order but work needs to be done to the ‘witches hat’ as it remains very stiff despite lubrication. The new basketball hoops have been well received. When these were delivered the supplier also included a number of basketballs and the Council agreed that these should be offered as a gift to the schools in the village.

Other issues: it was agreed to install the signs relating to dog management at the main entrances at a total installation cost of £160. It was also agreed to install the locking bollards at the new Howard Road entrance gate at a cost of £195. The Howard Road boundary ditch clearance is scheduled for Friday 22nd November (previously reported as 22 October).

 Tree planting initiatives: the Council supports the planting of

trees both for their amenity value and for carbon management reasons. A tree planting day on Saturday 30th November has been arranged by residents. However, the Council was very concerned to read in Meldreth Matters that residents were being encouraged by the organisers to plant trees on grass verges as well as on their private property. Any tree planting in the public domain requires prior consent from various Public Authorities and possible further consent for the ongoing management responsibilities/costs that such planting could involve. Residents need to be aware that unless all the required consents have been given, there should be no tree planting in the public domain. The Council instructed the Clerk to write to the organisers of the current tree planting initiative to make this clear. 

Tree survey: the Council agreed to commission a regular survey of trees in the village for which it has supervisory responsibility.

There are 43 such trees and the cost of £635 for the next survey was approved.



Flambards Close: two Councillors have recently been engaged in discussions with the Residents Association relating to the management of amenity areas on the Flambards Close estate. The Council agreed that a new working group should be set up with four nominated Councillors.



Village infrastructure: Bus shelter: it was noted that repairs are needed to the shelter at the Stocks; this will be further investigated.

Bus stop signage: to improve the image of local bus travel, the Council agreed that repairs and renovation were needed to the various village bus stops and a budget of £225 was approved for this purpose. This will include repair work to bus timetable cases and bus stop signs at four bus stops in the village.

Cycle rack planters: these have recently been replanted by a Council volunteer. The Council agreed that an annual sum of £150 should henceforth be budgeted for regular replanting of cycle rack planters, Railway Station and Village Hall tubs.

District and County Councillors’ Reports Local Meldreth Issues College Farm Bend Burst Main We were surprised to learn that following a fairly spectacular burst water main at College Farm bend, North End, Meldreth, Cambridge Water Company had failed to notify Cambridgeshire County Highways. Damage to Highways infrastructure naturally resulted from flooding – including deep silting up of drains. The road was partially closed off with a one-way traffic signal system in place for quite a few days while repair to (not replacement of) the under-road pipe was undertaken. As soon as Highways was notified by local residents, a site visit was immediately made and clearance of blocked drains ordered and carried out. We’ve asked Highways to ensure that a complaint is made to Cambridge Water about failure to communicate. Several weeks on, paths remain covered in mud – this too has been raised by County Highways with Cambridge Water Company.

Bus News The Cam Vale Bus User Group’s November meeting has been rescheduled. It will now be held on 22nd January at 2.00pm at The Limes, Bassingbourn.

Cross-border bus services: excellent contact has been established with North Hertfordshire District Council’s transport officers on a range of common transport concerns, including bus, train and cycle links. South Cambridgeshire and North Hertfordshire colleagues and Susan will be meeting with council bus officer representatives from both sides of the border to ascertain if and how we can pool resources to improve crossborder bus services.

Busway Service A (Royston-Melbourn-Cambridge-St Ives): Susan has asked Stagecoach for an update on this service’s performance.

Stagecoach have responded to say that they are looking to enhance their services, and to introduce some new vehicles to the fleet, and will be holding a public consultation event soon – details to be shared as soon as available.

Cambridgeshire County Council Charging for Care Cambridgeshire County Council is once again consulting on proposed new charges for people receiving adult social care services: in some 39

Innovate and Cultivate Fund The fund is open to voluntary, community and social enterprise sector organisations based in and outside of Cambridgeshire and public sector organisations in Cambridgeshire.

South Cambridgeshire District Council New Housing Approach on Genome Campus Proposals to significantly expand this world-renowned genome campus have been backed by South Cambridgeshire District Council and will provide extra employment space and homes for staff. The District 40

Council meeting on 24th October supported an outline planning application to provide a further 150,000 square metres of space for employment, conferencing and supporting facilities at the Wellcome Trust’s Genome Campus in Hinxton. There will be up to 1,500 homes for campus-based staff, 30% of which will be affordable.

The Wellcome Trust want to build on the scientific foundations of the campus to become the international centre for scientific, business, cultural and educational activities arising from genomes and biodata. It is estimated that around 4,300 new jobs will be created by the expansion of the campus. The proposal also includes land for a new school, a nursery and community facilities and provides public open spaces and allotments. There will also be shops and food and drink outlets, new cycling and walking paths, road crossing points and alterations to local roads including a new roundabout on the A1301. A fitness centre and health centre are also included in the plans.

Cutting-edge genome and biodata research is carried out by around 2,500 people who currently work at the campus, which the Wellcome Trust says is now getting full. The site currently has around 75,000 square metres of employment space and conferencing facilities. The campus is proposed to be opened up to provide public access, which would enable surrounding communities to use a range of open spaces and facilities.

Parking on Pavements - Update Contrary to communication from the Police at a July Parish Council Liaison meeting, when it was suggested that reporting pavement parking three times would result in Police action, the following Police communication has now been received. This is in the process of being challenged by SCDC. The Police are now saying: “There is no longer an ethical case to focus police resource on parking when there is immediate and growing violent crime and safeguarding issues to tackle.

Whilst our increase in officers will be focused on these serious matters it will mean some extra time can be given to matters such as parking.

Remember, however, time ‘on the beat’ is precious and over 101 parishes remains a challenge.

PCSOs are often perceived as having very simple front-line roles. This is not the case; a good deal of their time is spent helping officers tackling priority issues such as risks to young people, the elderly and vulnerable.

Christmas Fire Safety Christmas is approaching: the time of year when we’re enjoying a tipple with friends, cooking up festive feasts for the family and entertaining loved ones. With all the fun to be had, it is easy to be distracted when cooking in the kitchen. Fifty per cent of all fires in the home start in the kitchen and more than half of those are as a result of distraction whilst cooking. We want to help ensure your festive cheer doesn’t go up in smoke this Christmas by sharing our tips below for safe cooking over the festive season:  Never leave cooking unattended.  Do not cook when tired or under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication that makes you drowsy.  Regularly clean the grill pan and oven; built-up fat can easily catch fire.  Do not leave anything flammable on or near the hob: tea towels, oven gloves and even washing baskets can catch fire.  Take care when using microwaves. Fires can start when people microwave food for too long.  If you use a chip pan, do not fill it more than one third with fat and turn the heat down if the oil starts smoking. Oven chips or temperature control deep fat fryers are safer than using a chip pan.  Fire can break out in household appliances so you should regularly maintain dishwashers, washing machines and driers.

Never leave them on if you go out or go to bed, and register your appliances online to ensure you are made aware of any faults or recalls.  Have a working smoke alarm on each floor of your home. If it keeps going off when you are cooking, it is probably in the wrong location or you may have the wrong type of smoke alarm. Never take the batteries out of your smoke alarm.

Open Arms – Making connections There’s thought to be 50,000 people at risk of loneliness in Cambridgeshire, so chances are some of them live near you. With winter approaching, life may get lonelier; we all tend to stay indoors for longer. For some people, ill health and bad weather may confine a greater number to their homes, the fear of falling in icy weather and darker nights mean they’re too nervous to go out. Working neighbours may be out all day, so they’ll see few people during the week.

Villages are great at keeping the community connected, though it’s easy to overlook the impact of seasons. In winter, timing events or meetings in daytime, or providing door to door transport, can help to prevent isolation. Helping with shopping, especially bulkier items, gives an opportunity for a chat, or sharing a treat.

So, making connections, however small, can mean so much, whether it’s smiling, chatting at the checkout, catching up with friends by picking up the phone or contacting them through social media. Keeping connected by knowing what is happening in your community gives a sense of belonging which improves wellbeing.
