Editorial Welcome to the August issue of Meldreth Matters. Our centre pages diary looks a little sparse this month; primarily because the Village Hall is closed for renovations throughout August. Once completed the village will have a wonderful, refurbished venue suitable for groups, family celebrations and other events. Please see the back cover for details. Although we haven’t been notified of any events happening in the village this month, there are plenty of things to see and do in the local area this summer. Please see our events summaries on pages 12 and 31-32 for full details. Finally, I would like to thank Robin Farbridge for doing the magazine layout and finishing this issue for me while I took a week off! Kathryn

Support for Ukrainians There are now several Ukrainians living in South Cambridgeshire villages: Arrington, Bassingbourn, Great Chishill, Meldreth, Melbourn, Shepreth, Steeple Morden. If you have considered offering support to these refugees, but are unable to provide accommodation, please get in touch. The Ukrainians need drivers to take them to appointments, or for trips to Cambridge or other towns for shopping or just to see the sights of the area. Please note there would be no financial recompense for this. You would be doing it as a friend. They are all looking for work, so if anyone has any opportunities for them, let me know. Some speak better English than others, but even those with little English are keen to earn some money and show their worth. There are some families with children of various ages who are mostly now integrated into local schools (but again, this may not be the nearest school, so there may be transport problems). The Council have kindly made bicycles available, which helps with local transport once they get used to the idea of driving/riding on the left! 1st Melbourn Guides The weather has been kind to us this summer term and the Guides have had plenty of adventures outdoors. We started with a paralympic sports evening, involving seated ‘curling’ - sliding bags of stones along a sheet of polythene, tennis ball biathlon and dodgeball. Later in the term we tried American Football and Ultimate Frisbee. The Guiding history badge requires the girls to try ‘blitz’ cooking; making wartime food using a wood-burning brick fireplace. Eggless pancakes with plenty of jam went down well, but the non-traditional popcorn was more popular and fun to make! Science is also in our programme and one experiment required the girls to make coloured sugar solutions and layer them in a test tube. Some girls ended up with a brown mixture, whilst others managed to achieve the rainbow effect. One a sunny Sunday in May we had a day trip to Thorpe Park theme park where the girls screamed their way around the roller coasters, water chutes and fairground rides. The girls earned their Platinum Jubilee badge by making a colour-and-cut-out Union flag, crafting the state crown from a paper plate and answering royalty- themed quiz questions that were hidden around the churchyard. By popular demand we had a petsthemed evening, starting with a pet show judged by a local vet. Then, after a discussion on animals and their welfare, the girls made pet toys: a dog 5

tug, a cat ‘spider’ or rodent feeders and a bug hotel from a cardboard tube filled with sticks, leaves and grass. In preparation for a week-long county camp in August, we had a 24-hour taster camp at Steeple Morden. The girls learnt to pitch and sleep in a traditional ridge tent, enjoyed a campfire and cooked their own breakfast on Sunday morning. After four years in Guides, earning herself six Interest Badges and six Skills Builder awards, Aliya was presented with her Guide Gold Award. She will continue her Guiding journey at Rangers and as a Young Leader at Brownies. As our Guide unit is full and has a waiting list, we would welcome another adult leader. Shepreth Spitfires Football Club www.sheprethspitfires.co.uk Wow! What a great season the Spitfires have had, all topped off with a presentation and football tournament at the Eternit Sports and Social Club in Meldreth! The children loved the presentation day, where they each got a fabulous trophy with their name on and the name of the award that their coach had given them. The children loved the BBQ and the bouncy castles and were bouncing and playing football all weekend long. The Eternit Sports and Social Club provided the beautiful venue and refreshments for the day and this year our Extra Effort for the Club Award was shared by Joseph and James who have helped coach our younger children and fundraised for the Shepreth Spitfires all season. The under-10s and under-12s competed in the Shepreth Spitfires Tournament against nine other mostly local teams. Both age groups had very close results throughout and in the under-10s, two Shepreth teams made it to the semi-finals. The final for the under-10s was Shepreth v Cambourne with Shepreth winning on ‘sudden death’ penalties. The day after, in the under-12s competition, Shepreth made the final against Haverhill only for it to go to sudden death penalties again! Shepreth won with an outstanding last penalty thundered into the goal by a young lad who didn’t want to take a penalty but was brave enough to do it. Amazing! A big thank you to the Eternit Sports and Social Club for supporting grassroots football for all the children and adults in Meldreth, the surrounding villages and further afield. Lucy Smith 7

Meldreth Primary School www.meldreth.cambs.sch.uk What a fantastic year we have had at Meldreth Primary School. After two inconsistent years, it has been nice to get back to normality; inviting parents back into school and enjoying whole school events, as well as enjoying trips out. Throughout this summer term, we have had our usual swimming lessons in our amazing new pool, trips to an Anglo -Saxon village, to Pizza Express and the zoo, as well as our annual sports day. It has been full of fun. Here are some things that children in the school have said about their year and what they have enjoyed: I loved the zoo! (McKenzie: Osprey Class) We LOVED the rollercoaster at the Isle of Wight! (Hawk Class) We have loved swimming in the swimming pool and really enjoyed football club and all the other clubs after school. (Swift Class) My favourite part of this year was going to Grafham with Year 5, we had so much fun! (Olly: Kite Class) I have loved doing lots of craft activities this year. (Adele: Puffin Class) I have loved making story books. (Amelie: Kite Class) My favourite memory this year was getting a train into Cambridge, it was so much fun! (Gregory: Osprey Class) We loved taking part in the enterprise challenge, we learnt a lot! (Evie: Hawk Class) I have loved doing all the Science experiments this year, they were so exciting! (Esmee: Kite Class) Although an exciting time and a good opportunity to reflect on what a great year it has been, we are sadly saying goodbye to two amazing staff members this school year, Mrs Maggie Farrer and Miss Natasha Hill. Mrs Farrer has been at Meldreth for many years and is the heart of the school. No job is too big for her and she is always so supportive of the staff and children; she will be greatly missed as she retires. Here are some memories the children shared of Mrs Farrer during her time at Meldreth Primary School: Mrs Farrer is always so kind and helps us clean up at lunch time, she is so helpful. I have known Mrs Farrer for many years and she is always so nice to me. (Bailey: Hawk Class) It was great meeting Mrs Farrer this year, she made me feel so welcome when I arrived at the school. (Rupert: Kite Class) Mrs Farrer is really funny and plays with us at lunch time. (Swift Class) Mrs Farrer always claps when we sing, always smiling and making us feel happy and confident. Her knowledge of books, her work in the library, her amazing teaching and her enthusiasm throughout the school will be missed and we wish her all the luck in her new school. Here are some of the memories the children shared of Miss Hill during her time at Meldreth Primary School: I loved helping Miss Hill in the library, she let us sort out the books, it was really fun! (Matilda: Kite Class) Miss Hill organised for us to get pizza, it was good! (Julia: Hawk Class) Miss Hill gave me my own table to help me focus, it really helped and I really appreciate it. FOHT news: Discussions are ongoing with provisional speakers to establish suitable dates to fit in with a winter programme. At a recent meeting, we welcomed Lin Wallbridge and Jane O’Hagan who are joining the committee and thanked Maggie Smith and Harry Stevenson for their contributions. Although the annual supper in January has been very successful, it was decided that the amount of work involved by the committee in organisation and food preparation was too much for the event to be continued. Royston Day Centre We would like to welcome you either as a volunteer or as someone who would enjoy the company of others and would like to give The Barn a try. The Day Centre is located in The Old Barn, Upper King Street, Royston SG8 9AZ. Would-be volunteers are spoilt for choice at the moment. Everywhere you look it’s ‘volunteers needed. If you don’t feel you can be a volunteer driver or that working in a shop is not your thing, there are many other ways to help in the community. One of these is to volunteer some of your time at The Old Barn Day Centre. You can commit to one morning a week, fortnight or month. We are flexible and friendly. We offer tea, coffee, biscuits and a “home cooked” lunch (for those who would like one) plus light quizzes, bingo, dominoes, cards, chat, etc. If you know of someone, or are someone yourself, who perhaps feels isolated and would enjoy a morning’s company or would like to find out more about volunteering at The Old Barn, don’t hesitate to contact Sharon on (01763) 244229 during the times below. Join our friendly group for wonderful walks. Comberton Ramblers walk between 5-7 miles on alternate Sundays. We are a friendly and informative group and enjoy exploring the varied countryside in this area. No dogs are allowed except assistance dogs. Walking is one of the easiest ways to get more active, become healthier and make new friends. You are welcome to join us on any two of ours walks to see if our group is for you. Melbourn & Meldreth Women’s Group In June, sixteen members and guests met to hear Chris Lee talk to us about ‘Men’s Sheds’ which are community spaces for men to connect, converse and create. Who would have thought it would be so interesting? The idea came from Australia when soldiers, who returned from the Vietnam War, and were shunned, met together in sheds for support and there are nearly 1000 there now. Chris set up a Men’s Shed in Hemel Hempstead and that took three years; during the final year he was in a paid role. This shed still runs and has women members too. The UK has about 1000 sheds at present with more opening. You can search for them by location at https:// menssheds.org.uk. Sheds are a communal space for men to stay healthy and happy for longer and the most vital piece of equipment is the kettle! Activities revolve around making, learning and mending with time split equally between working on personal or community projects and fundraising. Each shed sets its own fees; insurance and rent need to be covered so these need to be considered prior to setting one up. There is no age limit as to who can join, Chris suggested that it’s all about the state of mind rather than age! Sheds don’t need to be actual sheds as some are based in care home grounds and special needs schools where no rent is paid but and maintenance is free, an arrangement of mutual benefit. Tools are often donated by widows who love to know that they are being used or members bring their own. Chris is hoping people will set one up in the Royston area in due course. Margaret Hunter (1925-2022) Margaret Hunter, one-time adult educationalist and County Councillor, died recently, as she wished to, at home in Keys Cottage in Meldreth High Street. In her time, she contributed much to the village. A tribute to her will follow in the September issue of Meldreth Matters. Julie Draper

Meldreth Marvells Platinum Jubilee Ride This local 18-mile ride terminated in North End, with kind weather prevailing during the few hours we spent together. Of course, many magnificent cycles arrived, some electric. We had a small display of bikes, the oldest of which dated from the Coronation of George VI in 1937, the father of our present queen. We were joined by some new participants who were wholeheartedly welcome. Everyone enjoyed a selection of homemade cakes and beverages, thus concluding another successful Tuesday morning gathering of Meldreth Marvells Cycle group. John Rogger

Melwood: Your Local Nature Reserve www.melwood.org.uk We hope that you enjoy visiting this nature reserve, maybe as a detour from the footpath along the wonderful River Mel. We are very lucky to have this species-rich piece of secondary woodland and meadow so close to the village centre. It is an important part of the County and District Council strategy for a nature rich corridor along the Cam and its tributaries and its ‘Doubling Nature’ initiative. We also hope that you enjoy the articles that Jim Reid, our working group leader, provides for Meldreth Matters from time to time, providing an update on what is happening in the wood as the seasons change and provide new sights and sounds. We have a core group of volunteers who participate in our working parties and a wider group of people who provide general support for our activities. However, this list has diminished over the years as people have moved away and grown older. We would therefore welcome new volunteers to participate in our working parties. This does not require special expertise, as Jim always explains the tasks required at each working party, including the reason for a particular activity. It is a very friendly group, with coffee and biscuits and a chat at the end of a session. Equipment is provided, but a pair of stout shoes is recommended. Volunteers have been very appreciative of what they have learned about wood and meadow management and the associated wildlife over the years. In addition to new volunteers, we are also looking for people who would be prepared to join the management committee. Some members will be standing down in the next few years and it would be good to have some new blood and fresh ideas. Again, special expertise is not required, just a bit of common sense! Of course, none of the activities in the wood could happen without the contribution from the Parish Council and we are very grateful for their support. River Mel Restoration Group www.rivermel.com Last month, we tackled a major repair to the access point to the River Mel on the Melbourn playing field, with support and finance from Melbourn Parish Council. Originally installed in 2009, the access has proved to be a popular feature, but the years of constant use have taken their toll. Some judicious repairs had extended its useful life, but this year we felt that the time had come for a more substantial repair, as the leading edge had been eroded and was becoming dangerous. With the work planned to be spread over three days, the old reinforcements were removed, the soil dug out to bed level, and four reclaimed railway sleepers used to reinforce the front edge. Soil retaining geotextile was laid behind the sleepers and the area backfilled with a mixture of soil and gravel. The gravel should improve drainage and the geotextile will help prevent soil being washed out under the sleepers and into the river. Once the infill was tamped down, a robust soil retaining matting was laid over the area to help prevent surface erosion by rain and wet dogs. We were fortunate to be able to use the services of Meldreth Plant Hire, who were engaged to do the groundworks. Their previous expertise in river work and their willingness to ‘go the extra mile’ resulted in the project coming in on schedule and within budget. Meldreth Tennis Club www.clubspark.lta.org.uk/meldrethtennisclub Meldreth Tennis Club held its first tournament since 2019, due to lockdowns and Covid restrictions over the last few years. The Marion Oliver Tournament was held on Saturday 18th June in memory of Marion Oliver, one of the founder members of the Club. The previous day was the hottest day of the year to date, but the timing of the tournament proved to be ideal with the weather on the day much cooler, with no sun. Although rain was forecast it kept away for the duration of the tournament. Twelve players took to the courts and played some very competitive and enjoyable rounds of tennis. Every player had a different partner and played five four-game sets, a new format which proved to be popular. There were a couple of draws which went to a quick half court tiebreak decider and the final overall winners of the trophies were Sue Stanton and Rok Podgrajšek. Mark and Jenny Shepherd and Jess Boname were runners up. All five had a choice of prizes donated by the Club Coach, Steve Smith, which included Dunlop T-shirts, hats, balls and racquet grips. The players thanked Christine Knight for organising the event and Christine thanked Mike Richards for helping with the scoring. Membership Membership of the Club has now reached 142, with many families, adults and juniors joining to enjoy playing on the courts at club sessions, booking the courts online or taking lessons with the Club Coach. Potential new members are welcome to come to any of the club sessions free of charge for up to three times to try the club out. Subsidised Junior Coaching Sessions The club recently introduced new junior coaching sessions on Wednesday evenings with fully qualified LTA coach Steve Smith. The Club obtained a £400 grant from the Cambridgeshire Participation Fund which enabled the first six sessions to be fully subsidised for members. The next six-week coaching course for juniors will run from Wednesday 10th August to Wednesday 14th September, 5.30-6.30pm. This course is open to members and non-members, aged 9-12 years; prices for the course are members £20, non-members £26. Melbourn Community Library The Melbourn Community Library serves not only Melbourn but the villages in the surrounding area, so it is there for you to use. We are to be found at Melbourn Hub which is in the High Street. This year we are again running the Summer Reading Challenge for children. This year it is entitled Gadgeteers and is run on the same lines as previously. Children are encouraged to read at least six books over the summer holidays. Once your child has registered, they receive a form to keep a record of the books read and a poster. The gaps on the poster are gradually filled with stickers – one per book read. Orwell Singers www.orwellsingers.co.uk Thank you Meldreth! We really enjoyed holding our Summer Concert in the Village Hall on 2nd July. It was an excellent venue with good acoustics, but such a pity Covid-19 raised its ugly head for some in the audience and several in the choir. We hope all are soon restored to full health. Whilst we are called the Orwell Singers, our members also come from surrounding villages, including Meldreth, Melbourn and Barrington. Our main objective is to have a lot of fun! That, and to learn a wide variety of music from modern to as far back as the 16th Century, like Greensleeves on this occasion. There are no auditions for people wishing to join and musical ability is not a barrier. For non-music readers like me we have our own website, www.orwellsingers.co.uk, where the individual parts for each piece can be played and repeated as a learning aid. We also get expert coaching from our Musical Director, Calum, who combines extraordinary musical talent with exceptional patience! Our rehearsals take place on Monday evenings from 7.45pm to 9.15pm in the Village Hall in Barrington. Like most amateur choirs we are desperately short of men! At the concert we had just three each of tenors and basses, so any recruits would be doubly welcome. Our Autumn Term will be starting on Monday 22nd August; earlier than normal because of Calum’s commitments later in September. We also plan to have an open rehearsal on 12th September as a taster session. In praise of … … Raspberries This month I am featuring raspberries. Available from now until the end of September, they are lovely in cakes, ice creams and fruit desserts. Raspberries are a popular berry with a rich colour and sweet juicy taste. They are a good source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. There are many ways to include them in your diet, such as adding them to smoothies, yogurt, or oatmeal, adding raspberries, grapes, and walnuts to a chicken salad, topping whole-grain waffles or pancakes with fresh raspberries, or blending raspberries with a little water and using the mixture as a fresh syrup for desserts or ice cream sundaes. Here are three recipes to inspire you this month. Raspberry and Lemon Madeleines Cooking time 10 mins Ingredients 180g plain flour 1 tsp baking powder 2 eggs 80g castor sugar 1 tbsp brown sugar 1 tbsp honey 2½ tbsp lemon zest (about half a large lemon), 1 tsp water 6 tbsp unsalted butter, melted 12 raspberries Method Mix the flour, baking powder and a pinch of salt together in a small bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, white and brown sugar, maple syrup, lemon zest, and water until a smooth mixture is produced. Whisk the dry ingredients in until just incorporated, and then add the butter, whisking until the mixture is smooth and sticky. Cover your bowl with clingfilm and chill in the refrigerator for at least one hour. Just before placing in the tin, stir in crushed raspberries. Preheat oven to 180°C. Lightly coat a madeleine pan with butter and 23

dust with flour, tapping out any excess. Pipe or spoon (it doesn’t affect the shape of the madeleine) the batter into the pan, filling each madeleine well about two thirds full. Bake for 10 -12 minutes, until the edges are browned slightly and spring back when pressed lightly. Tap to release the madeleines. Cool and dust with icing sugar. Raspberries and Dark Chocolate Traybake Ingredients 150g slightly salted butter plus some for greasing 150g castor sugar, 3 eggs 150g self-raising flour 50g ground almonds 1 tsp vanilla extract 150g fresh raspberries 150g dark chocolate chips Icing 100g sifted icing sugar, 50g raspberries crushed and sieved, 2-5 tsp water Instructions Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan, 350°F). Beat the sugar and butter together until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs and vanilla until well combined. Fold in the flour and ground almonds with a metal spoon and stir in the chocolate chips. Pour the batter into a greased 20cm x 20cm tin. Place the raspberries on top so that they're evenly distributed. Bake in the centre of the oven for 30-40 minutes until golden and springy if pressed gently in the middle. Allow to cool and then spread over raspberry glace icing, before cutting into twelve evenly sized pieces.

Raspberry and Limoncello Semifreddo Limoncello lends a lively kick to both the semifreddo and the sauce - a perfect chance to use up that bottle you brought back from holiday! Prep 20 minutes, plus freezing Ingredients 100g fresh or frozen (thawed) raspberries 85g golden castor sugar, 284ml carton double cream 4 tbsp limoncello 2 x 200ml cartons crème fraîche For the coulis 225g fresh or frozen (thawed) raspberries 2 tbsp golden caster sugar 2 tbsp limoncello To serve Extra raspberries Method Line the base of a 1kg loaf tin (19cm x 12cm x 9cm deep) with baking parchment. For the semifreddo, mash the raspberries and half the sugar in a bowl with a fork. Whisk the cream, the rest of the sugar and the limoncello to soft peaks. Beat the crème fraîche briefly so it is in soft peaks like the cream. Gently fold the cream mixture and crème fraîche together. Pour the mashed raspberries into the cream and give a few stirs only - just enough to swirl it through the creamy mix. Pour the mixture into the loaf tin and smooth the top. Cover the semifreddo with clingfilm and freeze it overnight. For the coulis, mash the raspberries, sugar and limoncello with a fork, then push through a sieve. To serve, thaw the semifreddo in the fridge for an hour. Remove it from the tin and peel off the lining paper. Drizzle with a little of the coulis and scatter some raspberries over the top. Serve sliced with the rest of the coulis. Jane O’Hagan

A10 Corridor Cycling Campaign www.a10corridorcycle.com A10 Awareness Ride, 25th September: Those who are keen to see improvements to cycling and walking links along the A10 corridor will know that we’ve been ‘playing the game’ for quite some time! The off-road paths that currently exist between Melbourn and Cambridge, passing through Shepreth, Foxton, Harston and Hauxton, have been constructed bit by bit since 2013. The improvements needed to make this a properly joined-up network, together with the critical link to Royston, are now within the scope of the ‘Melbourn Greenway’ scheme, to be delivered by the Greater Cambridge Partnership. This is the District, County and City Councils coordinating government funding for infrastructure development in one of the country’s fastest growing areas. The link to Royston is the anomalous tricky bit, as it crosses a county border, and the A10 Corridor Cycling Campaign is working together with elected representatives from South Cambridgeshire and North Hertfordshire to make this a reality. There will be a ‘Melbourn Greenway public engagement’ in the autumn. The Campaign is planning its family-friendly Annual Awareness Ride on Sunday 25th September, between 10.00am and noon. Motorbike Thefts Cambridgeshire Police are warning about a rise in motorbike thefts across the whole county. Insecure mopeds, scooters and motorbikes of all makes and models are being taken from driveways, car parks and public places by simply being wheeled away. There have been a total of 63 reported thefts from the beginning of June until 5th July, with 38 in Cambridge and four in South Cambridgeshire. Thieves only need a matter of seconds to steal a moped, scooter or motorcycle, especially if they are left with poor security; owners are being asked to ‘lock, chain and cover’: Lock: Use a disc lock to help secure the front brake disc, or a grip lock to secure the brake and throttle controls. You could also use a D-lock on the front wheel to stop it being wheeled away. Chain: Thieves often steal a bike by breaking the steering lock and wheeling it away. Use a chain lock through the back wheel (the front wheel can be removed). Secure your bike, with the lock taut to an immovable object such as a ground anchor or street furniture. This will stop thieves from cutting a lock trailing on the ground using an angle grinder. If this isn’t possible, thread the chain through your bike frame and back wheel. Cover: Thieves often ‘shop’ for particular bike models. Using a cover instantly makes it less attractive to them. A cover also provides another time-consuming obstacle for a thief. To reduce the risk of theft, park your bike where it can be seen by CCTV or passers-by, and at night leave it in a well-lit area. At home, consider installing security lighting and CCTV and use a garage if possible. If you discover that a bike theft has already occurred, you should call the non-emergency 101 police number and report the crime immediately. If you see someone taking an interest in a bike and they are acting suspiciously, be wary of disturbing or approaching the suspects; instead call the Police on 999. Meldreth Parish Council www.meldreth-pc.org.uk Meeting of the Parish Council held on Thursday 7th July 2022. This meeting was held in the Community Room in Elin Way. The main points of the meeting are set out below in the usual summary format. The full formal minutes can be viewed in due course on the website noted above and on the Parish Council notice board; these will be presented for approval at the next Council meeting. Discussion and Decisions Planning The main item at the previous planning meeting was a presentation on outline ideas for a self-build scheme for nine houses off Fenny Lane. The detailed development plans will follow the usual process and come to council later. District and County Councillors’ Reports East West Rail: at the next meeting the Council will receive a report on the discussions due to take place in July at both public meetings and stakeholder meetings. Melbourn Greenway: the current activities are making the case for funding of the bridge section over the A10 roundabout to complete the Melbourn/Meldreth leg to Royston. There is an awareness ride planned for 25th September at 10.00am [see page 34]. A request was made to the District Councillors for some recent data on cycle path usage. Financial Help: there is a system in place operated through Age (UK) through which requests can be made; details available at Melbourn Hub. Census: the recent ONS data highlighted the growth in population (up 17% in Cambridge, 8% in South Cambridge) and a shift towards a more elderly population. The consequences of these increases are yet to be reflected fully by SCDC policy. The District and County Councillors’ full report may be read on pages 43-47. Community Rail Partnership A requests for funding the room hire for the next meeting of the CRP 38

was agreed to. It led to a useful reminder of the CRP which includes representatives from local Parish Councils (Meldreth, Melbourn, Shepreth and Foxton) and has already delivered many improvements in and around the railway – including parking changes, lobbying for extra trains, gardening, cycling improvement and passenger benefit. Covid 19 Update General Update Three members of the Parish Council gave apologies for absence at this meeting due to positive COVID tests. This demonstrated the high levels of COVID infection and an opportunity for individuals to help supress infection. Flambards Lease Update The Parish Council has completed their activities but there has been no progress reported from the Residents’ Association. Recreation Ground and Pavilion Sadly, continuing vandalism of the dog fouling signs at the recreation ground was reported, leading to the decision that ever more expensive signs would be procured. Village Infrastructure The positioning of speed warning signs in Meldreth will be discussed with the Highways Department with the intention of introducing more signs on Whitecroft Road. Churchyard Safety Issues Further to recent reports, a temporary measure is in place and we are awaiting expert opinion from the Diocese at Ely and CALPAC (Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Association of Local Councils) on whether the long term remediation is both proportionate and reasonable. Community Benefit Application An application was received for part funding (50%), to the value of £11000, towards the refurbishment of the Village Hall. Representatives of the Village Hall presented their plans and the case for funding. The Village Hall Trust has already completed and funded Phase 1 (a new kitchen). The request was for Phase 2 (redecoration and refurbishment of the main areas and doors, new drapes, cleaning of the floor and replacement of the toilets). Later phases would be looking at external redecoration, the garden and replacing the windows, which were not part of the current funding discussions. 39

The request for funding was passed on the basis that the works would make the Hall more attractive for groups in the village and for commercial hire, such as weddings. Funding is contingent on paid access to the Hall being open to all groups and individuals in Meldreth. Summer Bootcamps One of the suggestions made at the Annual Village Meeting was an exercise ‘bootcamp’ for children during the summer holidays. The Clerk had made enquiries for a programme of exercise sessions, but no qualified leader could be identified who would be free at convenient times. Melbourn Area Youth Development had already made plans for a similar scheme and anyone in the right age range, can take part. Details are available from the Melbourn Youth Club. Reporting a Highway Problem to Cambridgeshire County Council If you have noticed a problem with a pothole, pavement surfacing, manhole cover, flooding, or verge then here is a guide to reporting the issue online. 1. Go to the Cambridgeshire County Council website: https:// www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/ 2. Navigate to ‘Report a highway problem’ using the following thread: Residents > Travel, roads & parking > Roads and pathways > Report a highways fault

3. The link takes you to a map of Cambridgeshire which you zoom in on to pinpoint where the problem is. The map shows the status of faults already reported in the area. On the right is an example near the Village Hall in Meldreth. 4. Clicking on the map adds a new red pin and brings up a ‘Report a Problem’ form where you can provide a description of the problem and upload a photograph. For potholes it helps to include the depth of the pothole, as this measurement affects the response time from the council. 5. Each report is assigned a reference number so that you can track progress on a fault already reported. Meldreth Parish Council 42

[Editor’s Note: see also the article on page 3] A10 Underpass There’s been a very strong response to the A10 Underpass survey; The aim is to improve the overall environment in and around the pedestrian underpass that links Meldreth and the station to Melbourn. Thank you to all 375 respondents: some of you walking to college, work, the shops, to friends or just on a walk for enjoyment may have met us on one or another occasion gathering views. Special thanks to Meldreth Parish Councillor Meridew and Melbourn Parish Councillor Clark for helping. We spoke to many MVC students, many on their way to take their GCSEs, and were buoyed by their thumbs up! County Council Focus on Melbourn Area Community Development The County Council is looking at how to encourage more proactive community development from the ground up, and has chosen Melbourn and its wider community as a case study from which to learn. This takes inspiration from a wide variety of schemes in Melbourn and Meldreth and surrounding villages, including the fantastic work being done with the Meridien Primary Care network (this is a group of seven GP practices in our area) and other groups at the Melbourn Hub, which are designed to benefit the wider community.

Library@home Award Cambridgeshire’s Library@home volunteers are one of three voluntary groups in the county to be given the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service. The Library@home service provides books and audiobooks to residents who find it difficult to get to a library through disability, illness or caring responsibilities. Volunteers visit once a month to bring and return library books and to have a chat. See www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/residents/libraries-leisureculture/libraries/ accessibility. Energy Retrofits Cambridgeshire This is a collaboration between the County and District Councils, delivering energy efficiency projects in homes with the poorest energy efficiency and lowest incomes, using a government grant. The government has indicated that it will continue to make funding available to councils for this work until 2025, and the partners are looking to use a contract ‘framework’ to maximise success in attracting this funding, both for council schemes and also to enable private households to secure a trusted contractor if they can afford to privately fund their own home retrofit works. Summer Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) Programme Cambridgeshire County Council is encouraging take-up of the summer holiday activities and food (HAF) programme funded by the Department for Education. There are nearly 3,000 free holiday scheme places available with over 130 providers across the county. Families in receipt of income-related free school meals can access up to 64 hours per child and children will receive a meal as well. They have also opened their eligibility to Ukrainian and other refugee families. Help for Residents Who are Struggling with Bills Cambridgeshire has been allocated £3.58million, of which £1.2M will be used to support households that include a person who has reached state pension age (66) by 30th September 2022 and are experiencing 44

financial hardship. Funding will also be used to continue providing food vouchers for eligible families with children and the Cambridgeshire Local Assistance Scheme which provides a safety net to individuals and families facing unexpected financial difficulties and hardship. Under the Household Support Fund, there is funding available via the Council and Age UK to provide financial support within a few days, and help people find longer-term support if needed. This financial assistance is available to people born before 30th September 1956. Census We’ll be hearing much more about this but for now the headlines. Data just published from the 2021 Census shows that Cambridgeshire has seen one of the UK’s biggest population increases over the past ten years. Overall, the number of people living in the county rose by more than 57,000 in the last decade to 678,600. This 9.2 per cent rise is higher than the East of England average, in a national picture which saw the East grow faster than any part of the UK. The figures confirm the County Council’s contention that previous Office of National Statistics figures, on which the government bases its grant allocations, under-estimated the size of the county’s population. Included within the Cambridgeshire Census figures is an overall 26 per cent rise in the number of Cambridgeshire people aged 65+, against an 18.6 per cent national average rise, with a high percentage increase of people in the 70 to 74 age band in all districts. While the more urban areas of the county like Cambridge have seen population growth across all age ranges, its more rural areas have seen small or no growth in the youngest age groups (0-19) but large increases in older populations. Last year’s census took place in March 2021 and data from the census will be published in stages over the next two years. Future releases will include figures on ethnicity, religion, the labour market, education and housing. Nature & Climate Declaration and Climate & Ecology Bill The County Council is supporting the Nature & Climate Declaration and endorsing the Climate & Ecology Bill. The Declaration asks the UK Government to deal with key climate risks by: 

The cross-party Climate & Ecology Bill is a plan for a new UK law that addresses the full extent of the climate change and nature crisis in line with the most up-to-date science. In the Background – Inflation Adds to Council Costs The County Councils Network and the Society of County Treasurers have revealed that spiralling inflation has left forty of England’s largest councils with £729M of additional unfunded costs since they set their budgets in March. To balance their budgets, as they are legally required to, and control costs, councils warn they face a winter of ‘difficult decisions’. The increased costs nationally include £428M for adult social care services, £72M for children’s social care, £397M for capital projects, £107M for energy prices, £136M for external contract and labour costs, £77M for school transport services and £259M for staff pay. These inflationary costs far outstrip any increases in Government funding or council tax. More Grappling - Social Care Reform Costs The cost of the Government’s adult social care reforms could be a minimum of £10Billion higher than currently estimated, according to the County Councils Network. The reforms include a more generous means-test, a cap on care costs of £86,000, a move towards a ‘fair’ cost of care, and the ability for people who arrange and fund their own care to ask their council to do it on their behalf. The higher costs could create a further workforce crisis in social care, with over 5,000 extra staff projected to be required to carry out extra care and financial assessments for those seeking to benefit from the reforms. 46

Meldreth Village Hall Reopening end of August!

The Village Hall is Having a Makeover

The hall is currently closed whilst it has a much-needed update. The main hall is being redecorated and new lighting and doors will be installed. The toilets are being refurbished and redecorated. The meeting room is also being redecorated with plans to make it a more functional space for small groups or activities. With the recently refitted kitchen, the entire hall will have a fresh, modern look with well-appointed facilities. Following the completion of this work the next stage of the project will be to renovate the garden, turning it into a much more useable and inviting space, and to repaint the outside. The hall is managed by a small committee of volunteers who ensure this valuable facility can continue to meet the needs of the community. If you think you could help by joining the team or would like to find out more information, please email meldrethvillagehall@gmail.com. Located at the heart of the village, the hall is home to fitness classes, community and support groups, children’s activities, craft fairs, shows, concerts and much more. It provides an ideal place for the community to meet, socialise and celebrate, as seen at the hugely successful Jubilee afternoon tea – thank you to everyone who came.
