Editorial
Welcome to the April issue of Meldreth Matters.
Events in the village this month include an afternoon tea (page 9), a talk about the wildlife to be found on the Wimpole Hall Estate (page 6 & back cover) and a Quiz Night, which is being held to raise funds for our Village Hall (page 11). We also have our usual summary of local events for children/families and adults (see pages 12-13 and 15).
There is an important article by Rev. Andrew Birks about Holy Trinity Church on pages 4-5. In addition, there is news from various village groups including the Bowls Club, Women’s Group and History Group. Finally, if you have children aged 7-12 years, then please take a look at page 19 where you will find details of some upcoming tennis coaching sessions taking place on the Meldreth courts.

Letter to the Editor
Thank You Meldreth
On my way to visit a resident in Maycroft care home I fell foul of one of the enormous potholes in the High Street opposite the One Stop shop. Seriously damaging two tyres, I was unable to drive my car and had to wait for roadside assistance to apply two temporary wheels to enable me to get to a tyre company.
The reason for this letter is to say thank you to the many kind residents of Meldreth who stopped to offer assistance and talk to me whilst I was waiting for the AA.
Although I was OK, it’s heartwarming to know there are so many kind and thoughtful people willing to look out for others in need.
Thank you Meldreth. What a lovely community.

Holy Trinity Church
One of the joys of being a Parish Priest is that I have the privilege to work in such wonderful buildings. Holy Trinity Church in Meldreth is one of them – a wonderful Grade I listed building. Whether or not you are religious, you cannot fail to recognise the architectural importance of our wonderful building or even some of the artifacts in it!
However, over the last few years, every parish community across the country has suffered a huge financial impact on its finances, most of which was due to the impact of covid when churches were closed, but also to a decline in numbers of worshippers. A lot of our churches have realised that they cannot survive and have found themselves being amalgamated with other neighbouring parishes or having a part time priest rather than a full-time post.
You may have heard of the phrase Parish Ministry Contribution (PMC) which is the amount of money that your parish is asked to contribute to pay for mission and ministry, including clergy stipends and their housing. Using the Parish Share system means that we can offer mission and ministry across the whole of our diocese. More importantly perhaps, resourcing the work of the church this way follows some principles we find in Scripture. God is our Heavenly Father whose nature as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is to invite us to be in a relationship with Him, and with one another.
However, we need to be able to meet our Parish Share Contribution each year. Currently we are supposed to pay £2,700 each month to the Diocese as our contribution. Each parish has the same obligation, and, on top of paying this share, we need to also make sure that our day-to-day bills and expenses are paid. Last year, 2023, we were approximately £4,000 overspent. We have currently suspended our contribution to pay the PMC, because if we had paid February’s and March’s instalments, we would have had no money left!
Last year our expenditure was over £46,500 which means that, with the most basic of maths, we need to raise £127 each day just to meet the expenditure of 2023. Even if we just take the basic things – gas, electricity, water and insurance, we are looking at around £9,000 per year just to keep the building open, which is £24.50 each day, just to keep us open! The short and simple message for each of us is that we need to raise more money! To survive, we need to raise more money for Meldreth church.
At Meldreth, we have the Parish Giving Scheme which is a Direct Debit payment scheme operated by the Church of England, which is free of charge to each parish. It collects your donation, collects gift aid if you can give it, and then sends the monies to the bank account of the PCC once per month. It is that simple! If you pay by Standing Order or Direct Debit already, can I say a huge Thank You for what you give. If you do already give, can I ask that you check you include Gift Aid, which can be worth another 25% at no extra cost to you? It means each pound is worth £1.25!
4
To make a one-off donation, or to set up a direct debit, please visit www.parishgiving.org.uk and search for Meldreth or scan the QR code on the right.
What about holding sponsored events to raise money for the church? Could you do a bungy jump? Could you run a marathon? Could you have a coffee morning? A sponsored walk? We need to find lots of different and innovative ways of raising money for our community churches. Without the regular income and fundraising, our churches cannot survive.
No priest, having been in post for four months, wants to write a message asking the community to reach into their pocket, and at a time when the cost of things is biting all of us. But, if I did not ask, as the Chair of your PCC, and one of the trustees of the parish, I would be failing. I will always be open, honest, and transparent with you and that is why I think its important for me to give you my view of where we are. We cannot drive forward in mission and ministry without the support of each and every one of you.
Holy Trinity is your Church, please help us to stay open and alive!
With prayers and best wishes.
Rev. Andrew Birks

Piano Recital by Students of Toni Cann
Award-winning pianists perform a dazzling programme of music by Chopin, Liszt, Schumann and more. The concert will include performances by Aymeric Tsyganov and Ruihan Wu who already have many fans in Meldreth. Aymeric, age 15, is studying for his LTCL, equivalent to a degree, pianistically, and Ruihan, 9, won first prize in her first international competition, the 7th edition of the PCO, and is also in the final of the Children’s International London Chopin Competition. Please save the date!
This concert is being organised by FOHT but will be held at ASM as there is a better keyboard there.
Continuing Banking Problems
Along with many other small community organisations and businesses, the Friends had issues with our bankers last year, due to their confusing and everchanging requirements for information. This resulted in the bank unilaterally closing our account without advice or warning! Barclays has refused to reopen
6
the account, so we are now in the process of opening a new bank account. Any Friends who have tried to pay a standing order recently will have had their payment refused. I will be writing individually to all the Friends as soon as we have our new bank account and apologise for any confusion this has caused. Meanwhile we would love to hear from you with any ideas you may have for the FOHT to organise. Please get in touch.

Melbourn and Meldreth Women’s Group
We are a small friendly group who meet at either ASCH Melbourn, or the meeting room at Holy Trinity Church Meldreth. Meetings commence at 7.45pm and last about one and half hours. We usually have a speaker or some in house entertainment. A charge of £2 is made to cover expenses and there is also the opportunity to donate to the charity we are supporting, which this year is HomeStart.
Our meeting in February was entitled Lent Reflection and was led by our Vicar the Rev. Andrew Birks. It was both thought provoking and informative and was much enjoyed by everyone. In March we will have had a talk by a speaker from The Garden House Hospice. Our meeting on 23rd April is at the usual time of 7.45pm in the Holy Trinity meeting room in Meldreth. Our speaker, Ron Sutcliffe, will be talking about his trip to Santiago, where he took part in the Camino walk which is a famous pilgrimage trail.
If you require any information about the group, or would like a lift to a meeting, please telephone one of the committee members: Diane Blundell (01763) 221415, Sue Toule (01763) 260955, Angela Leach (01763) 262793, Mary Bailey (01763) 220171 and Mary Purdy (01763) 260864.

Over 40 people attended our recent Coffee Morning. Joan Gane gave a fascinating presentation on the history of Whitecroft Road over the last 100 years, illustrating her talk with photographs and plans of the street. There was plenty of audience participation as people related their own memories. We would like to thank everyone who attended and those who bought our merchandise or made a donation. All money raised goes to support the work of the History Group.

Meldreth Primary School
www.meldreth.cambs.sch.uk
Spring is truly in the air at Meldreth Primary as we gear up for the Easter Break and as many chocolate eggs as we can eat! It has been a wonderful term with our students experiencing some fabulous trips out, to both the BAPS Mandir in London for our Year 3 and 5 children (“It was the most relaxing place I have ever been to!”) and Mountfitchet Castle in Essex for our Year 1 children. Our Year 3 and 4 students put on an excellent, all-singing and dancing performance of ‘Plastic Pirates’ led by the nefarious villain Captain Clingfilm and sidekick parrot, Polly Styrene! They truly raised the roof with some unbelievable stand-out performances and a wonderful collective effort which families enjoyed every minute of.
Mid-March always heralds National Science Week and, with the theme ‘Time’, our students got to work on field work in the school grounds, collecting data and taking samples of the flora and fauna and comparing how it had changed over a set period. Launched by our school Eco-Council at the same time, the children embarked on the ‘Big Plastic Count’ at home, counting the waste they used over the course of the week in an effort to raise awareness for environmental issues. There is not a month that goes by without our involvement in some sporting events. Teams represented Meldreth in a football match against fierce rivals Petersfield, in a hockey tournament and in a netball competition amongst our local schools cluster. All squads performed brilliantly and were an absolute credit to the school.
Punctuating this fun-filled month were various opportunities for dressing up! World Book Day saw our students come in dressed as their favourite literary characters, including Harry Potter, Dr Seuss and Where’s Wally? Comic Relief painted our school red and the spring disco meant the children donned their finest party clothes and boogied on until the evening!

The photograph on the right shows Charlie W. a striker who plays for Squadron 66 Under 11s and who joined Shepreth Spifires Tots football team six years ago. Since starting his football with us, he has been joined by his Grandad who gives encouragement and support to Charlie and all his teammates. After several years of being known by all at the side of the pitch as ‘Grandad Kev’, he has now progressed to ‘Coach Kev’. It is a pleasure for Shepreth Spitfires to see the team's players mature with their coaches!
Under 12s 19 Squadron played top of the table Exning, now Cambridge City. Shepreth battled hard and at one stage, the score was 2-2. Unfortunately, despite Shepreth never giving up, the final score was 2-6 after great goals from the opposition.
Under 11s Squadron 66 has a great game with a goal from Charlie W within the first three minutes, rapidly followed by a ‘thunder’ of a goal from Walt! Unfortunately, the match was lost but both teams played superbly! Players of the Match were Walter for his overall contribution and Charlie H aka Pep, for great passing and classy defending!!
Our Under 7s 19 Squadron got their first win. A fantastic boost for our younger teams! And our under 10s 19 Squadron had a great win against Coton, a strong team. A great match with happy faces at the end!
Please contact Shepreth Spitfires Football Club if your child may be interested in joining our friendly local football club. Our website is: www.Sheprethspitfires.co.uk or call 07510 175370

River Mel Footpath
On Saturday 9th March a group of local volunteers together with the 1st Orwell Scout Group (which meets in Melbourn) spread fresh wood chippings along the path by the River Mel. In recent weeks, parts of this much used and much loved, path have been very muddy. The Meldreth Footpath team are enormously grateful to the Scouts led by Sarah Helme and to Alan Tobin for allowing us to use his land. We are also very grateful to Shire Trees in Melbourn for providing the wood chippings free of charge.
If you would to help look after our wonderful footpaths please contact me on (01763) 260079 or email me at mberry0910@aol.com.

In Praise Of
… Rhubarb
This month we showcase rhubarb, a vegetable masquerading as a fruit! It was not until the beginning of the 19th century that rhubarb began to be prepared as a fruit, its popularity resting on its being the first fruit of spring. The first delicate stalks of pink rhubarb are in season from April onwards.
Easily roasted to keep their shape when tender, they can be used in many dishes. Rhubarb’s sharp tang shines in cakes and jams, especially when teamed with spicy ginger and brown sugar. Here are two recipes to celebrate rhubarb in all its glory. Enjoy.
Rhubarb Fool
Preparation time less than 30 mins, cooking time less than 10 mins, Serves 4
Ingredients
350g rhubarb
55g caster sugar
1 orange, juice only
Method
150ml cream, whipped
1 egg white, beaten until peaked
Place the rhubarb, sugar, orange juice and enough water to cover the rhubarb in a medium pan. Boil rapidly until rhubarb is soft.
In a bowl, fold the egg white into the whipped cream.
When the rhubarb is soft, remove it from the liquid with a slotted spoon. Fold the fruit into the egg white and cream mixture. Reserve a little rhubarb for decoration.
Spoon the resulting fool into a tall dessert glass. Top with the reserved rhubarb and serve.
Rhubarb Cake
Preparation time less than 30 mins, cooking time 1 to 2 hours Serves 10–12
Ingredients
200g butter, plus extra for greasing
200g caster sugar, plus 3 tbsp for the topping
3 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract or almond extract
200g ground almonds
200g SR flour
1 tsp baking powder
300g/10½oz slender young rhubarb, trimmed and cut into roughly 2cm/¾in lengths
26
Method
Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C Fan/Gas 4. Grease a 23cm/9in springform cake tin with butter and line the base with baking paper.
Put the butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla or almond extract, almonds, flour and baking powder in a food mixer or food processor. Beat until smooth and thick.
Spoon the cake batter into the prepared tin. Top with the rhubarb, pressing it down gently. Sprinkle with the reserved 3 tablespoons of sugar.
Bake for 1 hour 15 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Cover with foil if the cake starts to overbrown before it is cooked in the centre.
Cool in the tin for 20 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack. Serve warm or cold.
Recipe Tips
Leave the butter to soften at room temperature for at least 30 minutes before using, or soften in a microwave but don’t allow to melt. This cake keeps well for up to three days and can be frozen when wrapped tightly in foil.

A Meldreth Garden
There is so much going on in the garden: perennials pushing through, shrubs developing their leaves, trees with buds bursting.
I will plant out, against hazel supports, winter-sown sweet peas that were raised in pots. Other hardy annuals sown in February and early March in modules, will be ready to plant-out too, when the weather is reliable.
I am sowing half hardy plant seed now under cover, these will need to be kept frost free through germination and potting on. When space becomes available in the greenhouse, I will bulk up plant numbers by taking softwood cuttings from, for example, over-wintered pelargoniums and will propagate hydrangeas and fuchsias from softwood stem tip cuttings. Perennials that are showing new shoots from the crown can be propagated via basal stem cuttings. The stem cuttings of the Peruvian lily Alstroemeria 'Apollo' taken in January have rooted and will be planted out now.
In the allotment, the cut flower garden has provided late flowering sweet scented narcissus for the house. I plan to plant some perennials such as delphiniums and annuals including cosmos and sweet peas. In the vegetable plot seed sowing is in full swing; carrots, turnips, parsnips, etc. and I am planting out brassicas, beetroot and onions grown as plugs in the greenhouse.
I took the plunge and cut down a large black bamboo Phyllostachys nigra leaving a large open space letting light into the back of the garden and adjacent greenhouse. I will better manage the regrowth if there is any. It is time to prune penstemons, Hydrangea paniculata and other slightly tender perennials making the cuts just above fresh, new shoots.
Remove faded daffodil and tulip flowers, deadhead pansies, primulas and other spring bedding plants. Routine tasks provide a chance to inspect the garden beds more closely. If attended to, pansies will carry on flowering into the spring and even early summer.
The garden forget-me-not Myosotis sylvatica will be removed after flowering to ensure follow on plants are not smothered. I leave a few to self-seed while keeping on top of weeding to prevent annual and perennial weeds from setting seed.
Pots and tubs benefit from top dressing with fresh compost. Old compost can be removed and replaced with new to a depth of 5cm (2 inches), then check if watering is needed. Feed trees, shrubs and hedges with a balanced fertiliser. I use blood, fish and bone rather than chemical fertilisers like Growmore, sprinkling it over the root area before hoeing into the soil surface. This will particularly benefit young, weak, damaged or heavily pruned plants. Climbers such as honeysuckle and clematis will be tied around their supports.
28
It is difficult in an organic garden to protect lilies, delphiniums, hostas and other new shoots from slugs and snails, as there are currently few active predators. There has been a lot of slug/snail damage this spring.
A low maintenance garden: what does this mean? Low maintenance is determined by landscaping and plant choice; the focus is on hard landscaping, paving, decking and gravel often with mulch between plants. Mulching simply means using gravel, slate or organic material such as bark chippings, etc., to cover bare soil between plants. This is a really useful technique which saves on work, it helps prevent weed growth and slows water evaporation. Informal, modern or urban, gravel and prairie garden styles are great options for a low maintenance garden.
Plant choices will include trees, shrubs, perennials, ornamental grasses and bulbs most of these need attention only once or twice a year. Trees we know; shrubs have woody stems that stay above the ground all year round, some shrubs are evergreen, others deciduous losing their leaves in winter and very often these have the most glorious autumn colours. Perennials are plants that stay in the ground year after year, useful because they just come back each spring. Some are evergreen and stay on top of the ground the whole time, others like asters disappear underground, though their dead plant structure above ground during the winter can be very attractive. Grasses are probably the lowest maintenance plants of all and you'll find an ornamental grass for any situation. Bulbs will often return year on year with little attention from you.
Avoid thuggish or invasive plants. Good choices in our area include coneflowers Rudbeckia, peonies, succulents and salvia, sea holly Eryngium, Mediterranean herbs, euphorbias, cistus, santolina, New Zealand Flax phormium, Jerusalem sage phlomis. These and many more can take long periods of summer drought and not require watering once established. Choose plants with complementary textures and colours for year-round effect, round glossy leaves next to finely-textured grasses, for example. That way, colourful seasonal planting is unnecessary. An automated drip irrigation or trickle irrigation system would take a lot of stress out of watering and uses water effectively.
Good Gardening.

Meeting of the Parish Council held on Thursday 7th March 2024
This meeting was held in the Community Room in Elin Way. The main points of the meeting are set out below in the usual summary format. The full formal minutes can be viewed in due course on the website given above and on the Parish Council noticeboard; these will be presented for approval at the next Council meeting.
Discussions and Decisions
District and County Reports
The Council thanks our District and County Councillors for their latest report. This can be seen on pages 32-33 of this issue of Meldreth Matters and questions and requests for further information on this wide range of subjects can of course be raised directly with our District and County representatives.
Progress of the extensive repair work to roads in the village is given in the District and County Councillors’ report.
Village Maintenance
The Council continues to investigate steps to deal with outstanding maintenance and repair tasks on items of village infrastructure. Discussions are under way with Melbourn to consider closer co-operation.
The recent tree survey has been concluded, a contractor selected and work will be started on matters arising.
A further dog bin will be installed at the Recreation Ground, adjacent to the exit onto Elin Way. The equipment at the Recreation Ground was recently inspected by two Councillors and the list of equipment needing maintenance and repairs was brought up to date and will be duly actioned.
Village Traffic
The recently acquired second Speed Indicator Device (solar powered) will be installed in Whitecroft Road near the Fenny Lane crossroad junction, with the Highways department installing the support posts. The final steps in the Highway Department’s design of the 20 mph limit will shortly be taken.
Community Projects Funding
The Council approved an allocation of £600 to the Mobile Warden Scheme to provide further capacity for local residents. The Council noted the continuing importance and priority of funding the needs of local residents as the financial and social conditions continue to impose burdens on members of our community.
Planning Committee
Councillor Jenni Bone was elected to join this Parish Council Committee following the retirement of Joan Fallon.
30
Other Issues
The formal handover of the football goals and the marking equipment to the Parish Council was noted.

District and County Councillors’ Report
Anglian Water Meeting
We are preparing to meet Anglian Water as part of our regular annual meeting to discuss general issues of concern. Our focus this year is working with Anglian Water to correct a continuing pattern of foul water backup being experienced in the same parts of the village. Infrastructure improvements are needed. Thank you to Parish Councillor Nick Garner for agreeing to join the meeting. We’ll report back.
High Street Repairs
Fingers crossed, this work will continue on schedule. The wet weather since early January has exacerbated an already challenging situation on our roads and pavements and has delayed repairs that require dry conditions.
Getting Other Jobs on ‘the List’
Efforts to add the pavement on the west side of the High Street have been underway for some time, especially to correct the camber which at present is dangerous for wheelchair users. Repairs in Station Road Meldreth, from its meeting point with the High Street to the junction with the Melbourn by-pass, are pushing their way up the list for surface treatment, similar to the work last year on Fenny Lane.
Malton Lane Vegetation Clearance in Progress
A good amount of cutting back of vegetation overgrowth has taken place in Malton Lane near the approach to the river bridge at Malton. More work is needed along the road at its approach to the North End junction and we hope this will take place soon.
Off-Road Path, Melbourn-Meldreth Station
We hope to see work on this path begin in March/April. There will need to be a diversion to Meldreth Station via Station Road and we are working with the County Council team on getting support for crossing points along the diversion route. After the path upgrade has occurred, some repairs will be done on the Wonderpass where, due to excessively wet weather, some paint peeling has taken place on the outer exposed walls. Many thanks to the contractor who is helping out free of charge.
Royston Bus Meeting
We are attending a meeting convened by North Hertfordshire District Council to look at services in the Royston area. This is to bring attention to the 17 and 26 services which are important to those who don’t drive and may not be able to use the stairs at Meldreth Station, or who may need to travel on a bus pass.
Swim for Home-Start
The South Cambs ‘Turtles’ will be swimming at Royston Leisure Centre on Sunday 28th April, raising funds for Home-Start Royston and South Cambridgeshire in support of young families. Would any Meldreth residents like
32
to join or sponsor the team this year? We could really use an extra Turtle or two. This is not competitive, it’s just fun; ‘We are slow but get there in the end!’ Please contact Susan.
Update on Support for Ukraine
Grants totalling more than £13,000 have been awarded for activities to help Ukrainian guests settle into South Cambridgeshire and forge friendships. In addition, more than £102,000 has been given to support tuition in English. The funding is part of a wider £500,000 package of support provided by South Cambridgeshire District Council since the Homes for Ukraine scheme began, including helping guests achieve independent accommodation, a furniture package scheme and a recently launched landlord incentive scheme. Funding comes from the Government tariff received for every guest who arrives in the area.
Half Term Vouchers
More than 23,000 supermarket vouchers were distributed during the February half term to eligible families in Cambridgeshire. Cambridgeshire County Council has continued to run the existing scheme using the Household Support Fund from the Department for Work and Pensions.
Eligible families were automatically sent a £15 voucher for the week via email or text at the beginning of the half term holiday, with the voucher being valid at a choice of eleven supermarkets; a total of 23,288 were distributed.
The current round of Government funding will end on 31st March, but the County Council agreed at its meeting on 13th February to invest £3m of its own money to continue the holiday supermarket vouchers for those children most in need. The recent quality of life survey of over 5,000 residents in Cambridgeshire showed that 86% of residents were concerned about cost-of-living increases.
Free Data SIM Cards for Low Income Households
A reminder that Cambridgeshire Libraries are part of Good Things Foundation’s National Databank, O2 and Vodaphone scheme, which makes free data SIM cards or vouchers available to anyone aged 18+ from a low-income household. Recipients can self-declare as eligible, and the support is available for a maximum period of twelve months. The data can be used with any SIM-enabled device. This offer is available at a range of libraries.

Recycle Your Old Laptop
Cambridge 2030, in partnership with Cambridge City Council, is calling on Cambridgeshire businesses, non-profit organisations and charities to recycle their laptops when they are upgraded or replaced, by donating them to the Digital Drive. All suitable donated devices will be refurbished and distributed to local schools for students to use at home and in the classroom, and donating organisations will be recognised for their support on the Cambridge 2030 and Cambridge City Council’s websites.
This new Digital Drive follows the hugely successful campaign during the pandemic, where hundreds of laptops and PCs, as well as funds to provide internet access, were donated to help students and their parents to work from home.
If your organisation has surplus good quality laptops to recycle, please contact Cambridge 2030 to arrange delivery or drop them at Cambridge 2030, St John’s Innovation Centre, Cowley Road, Cambridge CB4 0WS.
Alternatively, you can make a financial donation towards the cost of hard drives and other essentials for upgrading devices via the Cambs Youth Panel’s Go Fund Me page: https://gofund.me/9d04aec7. All donations will go towards tools and technology needed to refurbish donated devices.
For more information about Cambridge 2030 and to pledge your support, please visit www.cambridge2030.org.

Planning Matters
Meldreth Parish Council
The minutes of the Parish Council Planning Meeting on 4th January were not available at the time of going to press. When available, minutes may be viewed on the Parish Council’s website, www.meldreth-pc.org.uk.
The following items were taken from the minutes of the meetings on 15th February and 7th March.
76 High Street, 24/00276/HFUL
Demolition of existing conservatory. Two single storey rear extensions and the insertion of four windows to the rear elevation. No recommendation with comments: ‘The High Street at this point is very narrow and consideration will need to be given to the delivery of materials etc’.
73 High Street, 23/04561/S73
S73 to vary condition 2 (Approved plans) of planning permission S/0984/14/VC of planning consent S/0912/13/FL, in respect of proposed revisions to design/ detailing of building changes to the elevations, provision of pedestrian access to the main entrance and changes to parking layout. No recommendation with no comments.
S211 Tree Works Notices
The following tree applications have been referred to the Parish Council’s Tree Warden: 2 North End 24/0157/TTCA 2 North End 24/0151/TTPO 21 North End 24/0166/TTCA High Street 24/0154/TTPO. The applications were noted with no comments made to the Tree Officer.
Showman’s Site Biddall’s Boulevard, 24/00616/S73
To vary condition 10 of planning permission S/2607/12/VC (Variation of Condition 9 of planning permission S/0177/03/F to allow an increase in the number of plots from 11 to 21) to allow an increase in the number of plots from 21 to 29. It was proposed by Councillor Goddin to recommend Refusal with comments, this was seconded by Councillor James and agreed by all.
Comments:
1. It seems probable that there will be inadequate open recreational space within the site, given the additional usage for caravan plots with a possible additional 24 caravans and the associated families and children. Prior to the application of 2014, the two areas at the front of the site, now proposed for additional plots, had been designated for recreational and children’s open spaces. This is an important consideration for a site that is isolated, adjoins a busy road into the village and is distant from village amenities.
2. Such additional usage will not be consistent with the earlier planning permission where the limit then agreed was to “ensure that the layout and
38
subdivision of the site remains appropriate in order to minimise visual intrusion on the countryside.”
3. The proposal would result in general overcrowding of the site and the effects of additional traffic joining a busy road, including HGVs and other heavy vehicles.
Other Items
The Cambridge Acre housing survey has now been circulated to residents. Editor’s Note: Thank you to the Meldreth resident who advised me that this survey was sponsored by Stoneware, a leading social housing provider. I hope to include a summary of the survey results in a future issue.
The clerk has contacted the Planning Department and the District Councillors regarding the residents’ concerns on the development on Whitecroft Way situated opposed the Elin Way junction. Clerk notified the resident to also contact the Planning Department Enforcement Officer directly. District Councillor Hales is also looking into this.
