Meldreth Neighbourhood Watch
Neighbourhood Watch Week, which has been running for 40 years, this year takes place from 1st to 7th June. The week also coincides with the national Month of Community.
To mark the occasion, your local Meldreth Neighbourhood Watch scheme (in conjunction with Melbourn and Bassingbourn) will be hosting a FREE drop-in safety awareness event at Melbourn Hub, from 11.00am until 2.00pm on Saturday 7th June. This is a chance for you to come and find out more about Neighbourhood Watch and to get advice from other organisations on keeping yourself, your home, your belongings and even your pet, safe.
We are delighted that a representative from the Bobby Scheme will be joining us. This is a charitable organisation which aims to reduce crime and the fear of crime, among older, vulnerable and disabled people. At the time of writing we are still finalising all the details of the event but please look out for further information on social media and on posters around the village.

Melbourn and Meldreth Women’s Group
We are a small friendly group who meet on the fourth Tuesday of each month at either ASCH Melbourn or the meeting room at Holy Trinity in Meldreth. Meetings commence at 7.45pm and last about one and a half hours. We either have a speaker or some in-house entertainment. A charge of £2 is made to cover expenses and we also have the opportunity to donate to the charity pot. This year the charity we are supporting is Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust.
At our April meeting we had a speaker from East Anglian Air Ambulance talking about cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It was so informative; one of the things he spoke about was the difference between a heart attack and a cardiac arrest. He was thanked for his excellent talk and demonstration by Sue Toule who gave him a cheque for the EAAA.
Our May meeting will have been our Summer Supper. Our next meeting is on 24th June in ASCH Melbourn when Avril and Roger Mellor will be speaking about their trip to Japan.
If you require any information about the group or a lift to a meeting, please telephone one of our committee members: Sue Toule (01763) 260955, Diane Blundell (01763) 221415, Angela Leach (01763) 262793, Mary Bailey (01763) 220171 and Janet Backer (01763) 221492. We hope to see you.

Melbourn & District u3a Craft Group
As the 80th anniversary of D-Day approached, an astonishing piece of world-famous artwork was on display in Peterborough Cathedral during April. “The Longest Yarn” was a magnificent creation of scenes from the greatest naval invasion in history and was visited by crafters from the Melbourn and District U3A Group.
The work consisted of a number of dioramas (threedimensional models) created in knitted and crocheted wool. There were 80 dioramas in total - echoing the 80 years that have passed since the landings. Scenes illustrated the doubts and difficulties faced by the Allies, such as predicting the weather.
It was an amazing day out. The panels making up the story were created all over the world, including Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, Britain and other countries across Europe.

Another exciting event took place at Eternit Sports & Social Club, our first ever Craft Fair. After enjoying a sun-soaked spring, summer is upon us at Meldreth Primary and the countdown to the end of the school year has begun. As always, we have plenty to celebrate here as our Year 6 students completed their SATS tests, leading to an outpouring of relief and pride, having worked so hard all year long to get to where they needed to be. Now they can look forward to starring roles in our Summer play, raising money through Enterprise and, of course, a week away on the Isle of Wight as a reward for their dedication throughout their entire primary school career. We are all hugely proud of the mature and resilient way in which they approached their exams.
It is not just our Year 6 students who have been preparing for time away from their families, however. The end of the May half term is also when our Year 4 cohort go to Grafham Water Centre for two nights, where they learn a whole raft of new skills and abilities, including sailing, cycling and climbing! This is the first time that many of our students will have been away from home for any significant period of time and provides a vital opportunity for them to gain independence before the expectations and challenges of upper Key Stage 2.
Indeed, our upper Key Stage 2 students have been enjoying weekly trips to Melbourn Village College, where the swimming pool is up and running again and offering classes the chance to fulfil a major part of the PE curriculum. Our own swimming pool has similarly been lovingly reopened for the Summer term, giving our younger students the chance to either learn to swim for the first time or improve the skills they already possess.
Another great success in recent weeks has been the establishment of our government-funded Breakfast Club. Mrs Taylor, Mrs Hardwick and Mrs Burge have made early morning starts for some of our students a hugely desirable prospect and numbers have swelled since its inception. Children enjoy being able to have a slower, less formal start to the day, where they can socialise with their peers and staff, eat a nutritious breakfast and play before starting a successful day of learning. We are very grateful to our dedicated support and teaching staff who put the hours in to ensure our students are catered for before, during and after school hours.

Letter to the Editor
From Your New County Councillor
I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself as your new County Councillor for Meldreth, as part of the Melbourn-Bassingbourn division of Cambridgeshire County Council.
From speaking with residents over the past few months, I know that footways and roads are a problem for many in getting about, whether by mobility scooter, on foot, by bicycle or by car. Difficulties with getting GP appointments and concerns about bus services and timetables were also often mentioned. As previously reported, the County Council has set aside £59 million this year for highway maintenance and resurfacing, but a recent audit has revealed more than £600 million in long-term underfunding, so the improvement will be gradual. In the next few months, we are also hoping to see an improved system for reporting highway faults.
The County Council also delivers a wide range of other services, for children, adults and social care and plays a role in scrutinising the Integrated Care System and in shaping and delivering bus services.
I look forward to continuing to work together with District Councillors Sally Ann Hart and Jose Hales, and we thank Susan van de Ven, the previous County Councillor, for her many years of service.
I want to make sure that residents get the support they need in accessing services or when things aren’t working as they should; in equal measure, I want to make sure that our area continues to evolve in the best possible way. You can find out more about my activities through the updates on my website. If you have any suggestions or concerns, please get in touch.

Meldreth Village Hall Trustees’
www.meldrethvillagehall.co.uk
Meldreth Village Hall has long been a cherished centre of community life, providing a venue for everything from local meetings and celebrations to classes and workshops, a space for social gatherings, events and activities that bring us together. It is a place where friendships are forged, memories are made, and community spirit flourishes. However, to ensure that we can continue to offer these services and maintain the hall for future generations, we need your support. As we embark on a fundraising campaign, we invite you to join us in securing the future of our village hall. Maintaining this vital village resource requires ongoing financial support. With rising costs of utilities, maintenance, and necessary improvements, it has become increasingly challenging to keep the hall running without additional funding. We have set ambitious but essential fundraising goals to help us meet the hall's ongoing needs.
The building requires routine maintenance to keep it safe and comfortable for all users. This includes repairs and upgrades to plumbing, electrical systems and the overall structural integrity. To enhance accessibility and modernise our facilities, we aim to complete upgrades to the store rooms, toilets and the main access points. This will not only improve the experience for current users but also attract more events and activities to the hall. We want to expand our offerings and provide more community programs, including arts and crafts workshops, more fitness classes and educational sessions for all ages. We also want to attract additional users including wedding celebrations, birthday parties, fairs, fetes and other community-based events.
We invite every member of the Meldreth community to contribute in any way they can:
1. Join us in organising and participating in fundraising events such as table top sales, quiz nights, concerts and race nights. These activities not only raise money but also foster community bonding.
2. Make a financial contribution. Whether it is a one-time donation or a monthly pledge, your generosity directly supports the hall. You can donate by contacting the Village Hall trustees for more information on how to give.
3. Help us reach more people by sharing information about our fundraising campaign. Talk to friends, family, and neighbours about the importance of Meldreth Village Hall and encourage them to get involved.
4. Your skills and time are invaluable. Volunteer to help with fundraising events, administrative tasks, or maintenance projects; every hour you can spare makes a difference.
Meldreth Village Hall is more than just a building; it’s the heart of our community. With your support, we can preserve and improve this vital resource
for current and future generations. Together, let’s ensure that the Village Hall continues to be a welcoming space for events, gatherings, and activities that enrich our lives.
Meldreth Village Hall, as part of our fundraising activities, is thrilled to have been invited to host a special event as part of the Royston Arts Festival which runs from 19th to 28th September 2025, and is a celebration of creativity, bringing together artists, musicians, and performers from various disciplines. We will be welcoming the acclaimed folk duo Hungrytown to Meldreth Village Hall on Saturday 20th September 2025. This highly anticipated event promises an evening of soulful melodies, intricate harmonies, and timeless storytelling. The Hungrytown duo, comprising Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson, have captivated audiences worldwide with their gorgeous vocal harmonies and masterful instrumentation. Their music, deeply rooted in traditional folk influences, has been praised for its timeless quality.
Tickets for the event are available through TicketSource. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to their music, this promises to be an unforgettable evening of authentic folk storytelling and musical craftsmanship. Tickets for Hungrytown can be purchased at www.ticketsource.co.uk/meldreth-village-hall-trustees, by calling 07572 553647 or by emailing chair@meldrethvillagehall.co.uk.

A Meldreth Garden
The flower garden has been building steadily since the spring, following the appearance of winter aconites. Now into summer, the garden is blooming magnificently. Deciduous shrubs and herbaceous perennials have returned to full leaf, many now flowering. The borders are lush and full, with no bare patches of earth visible. The garden retains that special green early summer freshness and vigour that I eagerly anticipate each year.
June Tasks
It's time to edge the lawn. I use a spade as it's much quicker than other methods. Within a week, the rough edges disappear, creating a crisp definition between lawn and flowerbeds. I'll feed the lawn before drought conditions set in, prop up any floppy plants that need support and cut back early flowerers like ground cover geraniums and Alchemilla mollis when they begin to look tired.
What's Flowering Now
A delightful array of plants are either flowering or preparing to flower in the garden this month: sweet William Dianthus barbatus 'Albus' and other dianthus varieties, lupins, opium poppies, nasturtiums, yarrow, day lilies, astrantia, scabious, roses, delphiniums, and alstroemeria, among others. The sea hollies will soon make their dramatic appearance, Miss Willmott's ghost Eryngium giganteum, Eryngium alpinum, Eryngium agavifolium, and Eryngium bourgatii, alongside the striking white globe thistle Echinops exaltatus f. albus. Later in the month, we can look forward to the weeping butterfly bush Buddleja alternifolia and Buddleja davidii in both white and deep purple.
Maintenance and Pruning
Love-in-a-mist (Nigella damascena) flowered last month. For this and a few other choice annuals, I selectively leave attractive seed heads in place, encouraging them to self-seed for next year's display. The Japanese quince Chaenomeles speciosa 'Apple Blossom' flowered superbly this year. Now I'm pruning back the new growth to keep it within bounds. Other shrubs that flower in spring on new wood receive similar treatment after flowering: deutzia, philadelphus, snowball bush Viburnum opulus 'Roseum', and group 1 clematis Clematis montana var. wilsonii. Meanwhile, the dahlias are emerging with the promise of spectacular autumn flowers.
For rose blackspot protection, beyond selecting resistant varieties, keeping plants vigorous through proper nutrition is essential. We have established cultivars we cherish, including my Rosa 'Iceberg', which unfortunately is susceptible to blackspot. I feed and mulch in early spring, then apply another round of fish, blood, and bone fertilizer after the first flush of flowers.
Sowing and Growing
Now is the final opportunity to sow hardy and tender annuals for late-season flowering, such as cosmos. It's also the perfect time to sow biennials including foxgloves, sweet William, and wallflowers for next year's display.
When growing from seed, I've noticed losses during the potting-on phase, particularly when seedlings are moved into compost. The young roots often lack sufficient development and strength to support transpiration, especially during sunny periods. I've begun sowing the most delicate seeds into individual modules to minimise root disturbance when potting on, a technique that has proven successful with cardoons, zinnias, and coleus.
In the Allotment
In the vegetable garden, it's time to plant late seedlings into their permanent positions, harvest the first peas and broad beans, and dig up first early potatoes when they're in flower. The taste of these first fresh potatoes is truly sublime, a gardener's well-earned reward.
Now is also ideal for sowing carrots and beetroot for autumn and winter harvests. It's time to plant out warmth-loving crops: sweetcorn, tomatoes, courgettes, cucumber, leeks, and French beans. This year, I'm also experimenting with chicory Cichorium intybus 'Rossa di Treviso', which should add interesting colour and flavour to winter salads.
Enjoy your garden!

Meldreth Parish Council

Meeting of the Parish Council held on Thursday 1st May 2025
The Parish Council meeting was held in the Community Room in Elin Way. The main points are set out below in the usual summary format. The full formal minutes can be viewed in due course on the website noted above and on the Parish Council noticeboard; these will be presented for approval at the next Council meeting.
Discussions and Decisions
Chairman and Vice-Chairman
Councillors Richard Goddin and Roger James were respectively elected to serve for a further period of twelve months. The Council also undertook a detailed review of the memberships of its various Committees and Working Groups. Details of these can be seen on the Council website.
District and County Reports
The Council thanks our District and County Councillors for their latest report. Questions for further information on local issues can be raised directly with our District and County representatives.
A formal Vote of Thanks to County Councillor Susan van de Ven was unanimously approved, to mark her retirement from services to the community.
Village Traffic
County Highways have confirmed that the Meldreth 20mph zone will be implemented from the 27th May with a programme of new signage and markings being installed from that date. We are also assured that the renewal of road markings at the Fenny Lane crossroads will shortly be undertaken.
Village Maintenance and Infrastructure
The bus shelter at the Stocks has been very effectively repaired and the other outstanding repairs in the village to signposts, the sport pavilion, and benches and gateways are listed for action as soon as possible. There were reports of a trip hazard in the paving outside the shop; this has been reported for repair and members of the public are urged also to report it to the authority. The weblink is: https://highwaysreporting.cambridgeshire.gov.uk.
Finance Issues
The audit papers for the financial year 2024-2025 will shortly be finalised. Work continues to finalise our proposals for s106 financed features at the recreation ground to provide complete hard surfacing facilities for basketball and five-a-side football; this will involve moving and replacing the zip wire.
Recreation Ground
Our equipment remains largely in good order but some repair and maintenance work is needed and this will be approached with a priority given to reported
issues. An independent RoSPA safety report has now been concluded and the Council will take the appropriate actions. An automated closing sprung gate for the children’s play area will be installed to ensure easy access and prevent animal access. Some additional seating is to be provided for those attending the children’s play area.
Last month we reported on the proposal to a ‘Monkey Challenge Climbing Wall and a Target Trainer’ feature; as noted then, examples can be seen at Steeple Morden and Litlington and have proven very popular. To help us gain a grant we do need to show public support for this facility so please share this with your contacts; more information can be found at www.finding-fitness.co.uk and let us have your comments via our Parish Clerk at parishclerk@meldreth-pc.org.uk.
We are also seeking a grant to install some outdoor table tennis tables.
Organisations wishing to use the pavilion at the recreation ground are reminded that they need to complete a User Agreement with the Council before access can be granted.
Parish Burial Ground
Having dealt with a major leak, final repairs will shortly be performed on the water supply pipe. Work continues to tidy the graveyard and to deal with several loose headstones.
Annual Meeting of the Parish
This was confirmed as taking place in the Village Hall at 7.30pm on 22nd May 2025.
Next Parish Council Meeting
The next meeting will be on Thursday 5th June 2025 at 7.30pm at the Elin Way Community Room.

Cambridge Fire & Rescue Service
The Dangers of Swimming in Open Water
In summer, there is a temptation to jump into rivers and lakes to cool off, yet there are risks and dangers associated with open water swimming. Paul Clarke, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service’s lead for Water Safety, said: “A swim in a river, lake or quarry maybe tempting, but even in warm weather, water temperatures may often be only 4 or 5 degrees which can give the swimmer cold water shock and breathing difficulties. Also, open water can be deeper than expected with hazards below like shopping trolleys and rubble which can easily trap or injure someone. Further, calm surface water may still have strong undercurrents, especially near locks, that could pull under the strongest swimmer. Our message to parents and carers is to talk to their children about the dangers of swimming in open water unsupervised”.
Here are some useful safety tips:
If you get into difficulty, you should Float to Live, by leaning back, using your arms and legs to stay afloat, and try and control your breathing. Once calm, call for help or try and swim to safety.
Go swimming with someone else so you can assist each other if in difficulty. If you see someone else in trouble in water, call 999 immediately; never try and carry out a rescue yourself as you could put yourself in danger too. You can try and find something to throw to them to use as a float or to pull them in if they are near to the edge and it’s safe to do so.
To help our Control operators and crews to pinpoint your location, give us a what3words reference. Download the app and encourage everyone in your group to do the same, making a note of where you’re swimming.
Think Fire Safety Before Lighting Your BBQ
To stay safe and reduce fire risk, follow our tips below.
Never use a barbecue indoors or on a balcony; keep the barbecue away from your home, sheds, fences, garden furniture, trees, shrubs and tents. Place the barbecue on level ground and don't set up in a place where people have to squeeze past it.
Keep children, pets, and garden games well away from the cooking area.
Don’t drink too much alcohol if you are in charge of the cooking.
Never leave the barbecue unattended; follow the safety instructions provided with disposable barbecues.
Only use approved barbecue fuel or fire lighters; never use petrol or paraffin.
For more information log on to www.cambsfire.gov.uk, follow us on social media or call 01480 444500.
