Editorial
Didn’t our War Memorial look lovely last month? I really enjoyed crocheting poppies for the project and thought the memorial looked fantastic with its “cloak” of poppies. Well done to everyone involved, to Jenni Bone for coordinating the project and to the Parish Council for their financial support. There will be an afternoon tea this month for all those who contributed (see page 4).
We have not one but three craft fairs taking place in the village this month; one at the Primary School on 13th December and two in the village hall on 7th and 14th December (see page 6). This year, the Christmas Market on 7th December will be supporting Home-Start, Meldreth Food Bank and Meldreth Matters. Members of the MM team will be running a bottle stall and selling pre-loved household items amongst other things, so please come along and say hello and support us and all the other stall holders.
This is an expensive time of year for many families and courtesy of one of our readers, we have a list of free or inexpensive activities for you to do with your children or grandchildren. Of course, we also have our usual summaries of things to do and these too include some free or low-cost activities. See pages 10, 12-13 and 32-33.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of our advertisers for their continued support. Without the income from advertising, we would be unable to deliver Meldreth Matters free of charge every month. Please remember to mention MM when contacting our advertisers.
Our search for more advertisers continues. If you know of a business that could benefit from advertising in the magazine, please let us or them know. Thanks to the generosity of one of our readers, we are able to offer three months’ advertising free of charge to four different businesses. Please see page 23 for details.
We are very grateful to those of you who have donated to MM since David Smith’s letter appeared in the October issue; these donations are very much appreciated and will help us to cover our printing costs until we can attract more advertisers. To date, we have received £430 from individuals; enough to pay approximately 80% of our monthly printing bill. Thank you all for your support.
I would like to thank the whole MM team for their help throughout the year. We all contribute many hours of our own time to ensuring that MM is produced and delivered free of charge every month. Of course, we would be lost without our fantastic deliverers, so thanks go to all of them; you will find a list on page 23.
Finally, on behalf of the MM team, I would like to wish all of our readers, advertisers and deliverers a very Happy Christmas.
Kathryn
Remembrance Sunday Coffee Morning
It was great that so large a gathering came for coffee after the Act of Remembrance at the war memorial. And how beautiful the memorial looked, decorated with cascades of poppies.
Very many thanks to the Parish Council for its financial support of this occasion. Our grateful thanks go to all who donated all those tasty cakes and biscuits, to the invaluable helpers in the kitchen, to Joan Gane for the decorations and last but not least to the Brownies for handing round the cakes.
Thank you to everyone who put money in the British Legion collection boxes on the day: this amounted to £140 for the British Legion.
Sadly we have to say 'Goodbye' to Lindsey McCaig and her family who are moving to pastures new. They were instrumental in setting up this coffee morning. We wish them much happiness in their new ventures. We are very fortunate that Helen Durant has agreed to take over from Lindsey.

An Invitation to all Poppy Contributors!
Photograph by Kathryn Betts
I would like to say a very big ‘THANK YOU’ to everyone who gave their time and skills to make our spectacular poppy Memorial display. There have been so many kind comments from local residents and visitors who came to Meldreth just to see the display. I think it’s safe to say it has had a great impact.
What a wonderful show of community spirit and team effort - every stitch, knot and cable tie counted! Together we have created something beautiful that honours those who gave so much.
So, an invitation to join me at Elin Way Community Room on Friday 12th December from 3.00pm until 5.00pm for a ‘Cuppa and Cakes’ and the opportunity to give each other a well-deserved pat on the back!
I look forward to seeing you all.

Meldreth Brownies
Meldreth Brownies were honoured to read their Remembrance poem at the war memorial on Remembrance Sunday (published below).
Looking ahead to 2026 we are planning an extra special pack holiday in Norfolk to celebrate 70 years of Brownies in Meldreth. We are aiming to raise some funds towards the coach for this. It would be great to have your support if you see us fundraising around the village.
We have thriving Girlguiding Rainbow, Brownie and Guide groups in Meldreth and are often looking for more adult support. This can be regular or ad hoc and could be with finances, fundraising and admin or supporting in-person events. Please get in touch if you have skills to offer. If you have a daughter interested in joining us see www.girlguiding.org.uk for more details.

The Past, the Present and Our Hopes for the Future Buildings are broken and things destroyed, But people stand strong together, In the past, present, and future we remember them, We are all people, Why are we fighting?
We remember soldiers, And wear poppies as a sign of hope, The wars are quite hopeless times, Most of us are friends now, But sadly wars are still happening, Though remembering may hurt, It keeps memories alive.
I hope when I’m in my sixties that no more wars will harm soldiers or families, The world in peace is what we hope will come, When we are adults we will still remember soldiers, We will still wear poppies, We will hopefully live in harmony, With no wars going on, And the current wars will just be memories too.
Christmas Market
Sunday 7th December, 10.00am – 3.00pm, Meldreth Village Hall
This year’s Christmas Market at the Village Hall will have a variety of stalls selling mainly beautifully hand-crafted, unique items: wood-turned, knitted, handpoured (candles), beaded, personalised and threaded. There will be Christmas decorations, jewellery, novelties, stocking fillers and much more. Home-Start is holding a raffle and will be providing refreshments throughout the day.
Meldreth Food Bank will be there, so do please bring a food item, money, toiletries or a small gift suitable for a child aged 2-10 years. All of these items will be very gratefully received.
The net proceeds of the stall fees this year are being donated to Meldreth Matters because resources remain low and financial support is needed if the magazine is to continue in its present form. As part of our fundraising efforts, MM will have a stall selling pre-loved household items and some new seasonal and hand-crafted items. We will also have a bottle stall. Donations will be welcomed should you feel inclined.
Please come and support some good causes as well as our very talented stallholders. Admission is free! Please contact me with any questions by emailing lesleyfarbridge@hotmail.com or telephoning 07917 065465.

Our Family History Afternoon in October was a great success. Thank you to Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire Family History Society for joining us and to everyone who attended. We gained some valuable information as a result, not to mention some new members and helpers!
Next year we will be introducing some evening meetings for those interested in helping with our research. Please email us for more details.

We are selling Christmas cards of the village again this year. The multi-view cards cost 60p each or £5 for ten cards.
To purchase, please email info@meldrethhistory.org.uk.
All money raised from the sale of the cards and our other merchandise goes towards supporting the work of Meldreth Local History Group.

Wise Local Crafters News
Our members have been busy his month! We are actively trying to support local community charities and so many of our crafters have produced beautiful pieces of work to support several worthy causes!
Over 100 stockings were handmade by knitting and crocheting by incredibly talented members of Wise Local Crafters for the Arthur Rank Hospice ‘Christmas Stockings Appeal’. Our club also contributed by sending in sweet treats to be placed inside the stockings in the hope of raising money for this very worthy cause. Our members hand-knitted many premature baby hats, blankets, and matinee jackets for Broomfield Maternity Hospital in Chelmsford and many members contributed handmade blankets for Wood Green Animal Shelter to keep the cats and dogs comfortable in their kennels.
We were also very proud to help produce poppies for Meldreth War Memorial; it was a huge privilege to be involved and such a delight to see the beautiful, finished result.
We are a very friendly group and we always welcome new members. There is lots of friendly chat in a safe warm environment, while enjoying our crafting projects and sharing skills and experience. We meet every Thursday from 10.30am onwards at Eternit Sports and Social Club, Whaddon Road, Meldreth. We would like to thank Lucy from Eternit Sports and Social Club for allowing our club to use their fantastic venue! Please contact me on 07772 738913 or email julawil@hotmail.com for further details.

As we wrap up another busy year at Meldreth Village Hall, we want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported the hall over the past twelve months. Whether you’ve attended events, hired the hall for your own activities, or simply helped spread the word, your involvement keeps this wonderful community space thriving.
A special thank you goes to those who have stepped forward to become new trustees - your willingness to help ensures the hall will continue to serve the village for years to come. We also want to acknowledge the dedicated trustees who have worked tirelessly throughout the year and offer our gratitude to those who retired in 2025 after giving so much of their time and energy. Your contributions have made a real difference.
Our recent Quiz Night was a fantastic success, with twelve teams taking part. The atmosphere was lively, the questions were challenging and the laughter was contagious. It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces and new friends coming together for an evening of fun. Thank you to everyone who came along and made it such an enjoyable event.
We would also like to give a huge thank you to Meldreth Matters for constantly supporting us by publishing our events, posters and even our occasional ramblings! Your help in keeping the community informed is invaluable and greatly appreciated.
As the festive season approaches, we’d like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We look forward to welcoming you back in 2026 for more community events and shared moments.
Save the Date!
Keep an eye out for details of our Race Night coming up in February - it promises to be another great evening of entertainment and fundraising for the hall.
Thank you once again for your continued support. Here’s to another wonderful year at Meldreth Village Hall!

Meldreth Primary School
www.meldreth.cambs.sch.uk
Sleigh bells are ringing, decorations are swinging and children are singing here at Meldreth Primary as we ramp up our festivities with Christmas on the horizon! After a solemn start to November, when we commemorated 107 years since the end of World War 1 with a moving silence held by students and staff together in the playground, we then set to work preparing the school for a month of Yuletide joy. Decoration Day, a cherished staple event of the school year, saw classes mixed by age groups and spread across the school. We went completely offtimetable and instead journeyed from classroom to classroom to craft a wide variety of different Christmas decorations, such as bird boxes, snow globes and wreaths, all while wearing festive jumpers to a background of cheesy Christmas music! This will help set the stage for our forthcoming Christmas Fete, arranged and run by our amazing PTA.
This has set the scene for a wide range of celebrations across the month of December. As always, we welcome the inimitable Widdershins Theatre for some puppet-based hilarity, and GenR8 to help our students understand the message of Christmas.
Our younger children are also busily preparing for the Key Stage 1 Nativity whilst our Key Stage 2 pupils are rehearsing acting, singing and playing musical instruments for the Carol Concert at Holy Trinity Church. As part of our annual community outreach around Christmas time, our choir will also be visiting Maycroft Care Home to regale residents there with some traditional festive carols!
In other news, our Year 5 cohort enjoyed a fantastic immersive experience as evacuees at Burwell House, where they were greeted on the platform of the Nene Valley Railway as their World War 2 alter-egos and given a tour around Stibbington Village, before experiencing what it would have been like in a 1940s classroom! Needless to say, our students were left horrified at how strict and uncompromising teachers were back then!

Things to Do on a Budget
Given the number of people in Meldreth who are using the foodbank and/or have children and are on a tight budget, it seems appropriate to list some things for families to do, where cost is a consideration.
Suggestions for December Garden Centres: there are Christmas displays in all local garden centres which can be viewed and enjoyed free of charge. At Scotsdales, you can feed some very big fish for 50p.
The ’Real’ Story of Santa: Saturday 6th December 5.30pm in Litlington Parish Church. Your little ones can learn the story of St Nicholas, meet Santa and enjoy doing a variety of crafts. All free.
Nativity: On Wednesday 24th December All Saints’ Melbourn will have a Crib Service at 3.00pm with carols and a guest appearance by Noah the donkey.
Santa’s Visit to Meldreth: The date for this was not available at the time of going to press: check the Royston Round Table Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ RoystonRoundTable for updates. There is usually a collection for charity, but Santa will wave to everyone regardless and it's a very jolly time. We often have a family walk round the village to see the lights as well because, well, why not?
Other Suggestions
Bassingbourn Community Library, Old School Community Centre, High Street, Bassingbourn SG8 5LD: On Tuesdays and Thursdays 2.30pm-4.30pm and Saturdays from 10.00am to noon there is a small library and a café run by volunteers where everything seems to cost 50p. There are free crafts for kids as well. There is also a Lego hour from 6.00-7.00pm on the second Thursday of each month. See www.facebook.com/bookcafe123tea.
BMX tracks: BMX tracks are free to use and come in different sizes. I've used them with a three year old on a sit and ride bike but the Royston one is good for adults too. Buntingford and Barrington are smaller but fine for pre-school or primary age.
Church Events: Melbourn Baptist Church (melbourn-baptist.org.uk) and Bassingbourn Parish Church (www.bassingbournchurch.org.uk) run good kids’ clubs. Bassingbourn also has Messy Church on the first Thursday of each month from 3.15pm-5.15pm which consists of an hour of crafts, a fifteen minute service (three action songs and a short story) and a sit down dinner for the kids provided by the church.
Cinema: Broadway Cinema in Letchworth has a Kids Club with screenings on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Tickets are £1.75 per person. www.broadway-letchworth.com.
Museums: Take the Park and Ride (£4 return for adults, £1 for children 5-15 years) to Cambridge and visit free museums; Geology (dinosaurs), Zoology (animal skeletons) and the Fitzwilliam (Egyptian, Art and much more!).
Toddler Groups: There are several groups locally, usually with a charge of just £1 or £2. I can recommend Meldreth on Wednesday mornings (see page 12), Bassingbourn (Thursday mornings) https://www.bassingbournchurch.org.uk/ tots.html and Melbourn Baptist (Tuesday mornings) https://melbournbaptist.org.uk/toddlers-plus. Royston Evangelical Church has a group on Friday mornings - https://roystonevangelicalchurch.com/activities. Kids can socialise while carers catch their breath with a cuppa.
In case you are wondering how 'free' church events are funded, people who attend church regularly pay what they think they can afford so people with a lot usually decide to pay a lot, people with no money obviously contribute less (or nothing) and people in the middle adjust their giving accordingly. There will be ways to donate at all events but since most giving is done by standing order or tapping these days, no-one will care or even know if you don't or can't contribute.
I'm sure there are many other good things out there that don't cost the earth and I'd love to hear of others. Wishing everyone a great run up to Christmas.
Miriam Skuce
Editor’s Note: please see our usual summaries of events on pages 10 and 32-33, which also include some free and low-cost options.

Thank You from all at Meldreth Food Bank
Thanks to the generosity of everyone in Meldreth we have had a good year at the Food Bank and haven’t had to worry about supplies. We are able to thank some of our donors personally when they call in on a Tuesday morning but there are many anonymous donors who contribute cash or pop a few items in our collection boxes each week. Every pound, can, packet or bottle helps and we are truly grateful for every one. Thank you.
Last month, in Meldreth Matters, we appealed for toys for the children for a little extra Christmas treat. After a tough morning hearing some sad stories, we were astonished to see a local resident pushing an overflowing trolley full of bags and boxes up the path to the Community Rooms in Elin Way. Not only had he
brought an unprecedented quantity of daily essentials for our shelves but also individually wrapped gifts for all the children associated with the Food Bank, a different colour of bag for each age group. It was an amazing act of generosity and brought a tear to our eyes.
We hope many of you were able to appreciate our tree at the Christmas Tree Festival - every item will go into the Food Bank store cupboards and will put a little smile on the faces of the recipients.
We shall be open on Tuesday 23rd December but closed on Tuesday 30th December.
Season’s Greetings from the Food Bank Team An update from your local MP, Pippa Heylings
One of the proudest moments in my time as an MP so far has been delivering our petition to save Arthur Rank Hospice’s beds to Number 10 Downing Street. I was joined by my fellow Cambridgeshire Lib Dem MPs and the most amazing group of people who have felt Arthur Rank Hospice's care first-hand or whose family members have – and the petition we delivered was more than 15,500 strong! We continue to fight to restore the funding to ensure all 23 beds at the hospice remain open because everyone deserves access to excellent care right up until the very end of their lives. Thank you so much to the group that travelled as well as all the passionate constituents and colleagues across the county that made this happen.
A South Cambridgeshire District Council and Cambridgeshire County Council joint campaign has led to more than 80 extra children in South Cambridgeshire now receiving free school meals, following a pioneering initiative between our two local councils. I’m particularly impressed by their use of smart technology and data-sharing to proactively identify families eligible for support but who are not currently claiming it. I wanted to share this with you as it demonstrates how things can be done better, when we all work together.
I’ve also been out on the doorsteps listening to residents and holding my MP surgeries. This has been invaluable in helping me prioritise the work that matters most to you and to take that forward as your voice in Parliament. If you would like to keep up to date with my work, you can register for my e-newsletter, available at www.pippaheylings.org.uk/newsletter. It will not be long before the holidays are upon us again soon, and I want to wish you all the best for you and your families at this time. I hope you have a restful and joyous Christmas break and a very happy New Year in 2026.

Meldreth Neighbourhood Watch
www.facebook.com/meldrethnhw
This time of year can get very expensive. With presents to buy, and food and heating costs on the rise, it’s always good to know how you could save a bit of money.
Did you know that Neighbourhood Watch members get discounts on certain security products to help protect their homes, computers, bikes, luggage, phones and more? Some home insurers also give members a discount on their insurance premium, because they recognise that a community where people actively watch out for each other is a safer one. In addition, members can choose to receive email alerts about local incidents and advice on crime prevention.
The best bit? Joining Neighbourhood Watch is completely FREE!
The easiest way to join is via https://www.ourwatch.org.uk. Once you’ve signed up to the national scheme, you will be able to search for your local group and subscribe to the scheme called ‘Meldreth’, which covers the whole village. If you are not able to sign up online, get in touch with me and we’ll find another way.
Becoming a member won’t commit you to anything at all. However, if you do fancy getting more actively involved in the running of our local group, we’d love to hear from you! In the meantime, we wish you all a safe and happy Christmas.

Blackcaps in Winter in the UK
The Blackcap is a small European warbler which visits the UK in the summer to breed. The male has a black ‘cap’ and the female a brown ‘cap’. In winter the birds tend to ‘head to the Med’ to escape the colder weather. However, in recent years a proportion of birds from northern Europe have begun to over winter in Britain. The British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) are monitoring this change and licensed bird ringers are colour ringing individual birds caught over the period November to March.
Each Blackcap is ringed with a unique combination of four rings – two per leg - so it can be identified from a distance.
Last winter in Meldreth, I colour-ringed eight new individuals and a colleague in Royston ringed seven. This year we will be looking out to see if these birds return, and/or new birds appear.
This is where you and your children can help if you have bird feeders in your garden or a neighbour’s garden. If you see a bird like the one pictured here, and are able to record what you see, I would love to hear from you. It is important to record which leg has which combination of rings. This bird is a female – brown ‘cap’. The right leg – the nearest one – has a metal ring above and a light blue plastic ring below. The left leg – has a pink plastic ring above and a red plastic ring below. [Editor’s note: see the online version of the magazine on issuu.com for a colour photograph.]
The study this season began on Saturday 15th November and will end on 31st March. However, all sightings, before or after those dates are welcome. Thank you.
A Meldreth Garden
A village resident indicated that an article could be undertaken by using AI. I therefore did this for December; what follows was corrected for English spelling. I have to admit the article is pretty good, if generic and missing any plant names. I would not advise wrapping in hessian, it is too water retentive.
Gardening in December: Essential Winter Tasks
December transforms the garden into a place of dormancy and rest, but thoughtful gardeners know this quiet month holds important opportunities. While growth has ceased, strategic winter work now will reward you with a healthier, more beautiful garden come spring.
Protecting Your Plants
Winter protection is December's most crucial task. Apply thick mulch around vulnerable perennials, roses and shrubs to insulate roots from freeze-thaw cycles that can heave plants from the ground. Wrap tender evergreens in hessian to shield them from harsh winds and snow damage.
Container plants need special attention since their roots are exposed to freezing. Group pots in sheltered spots and wrap them with bubble wrap or hessian to prevent cracking. Even hardy plants can suffer when their roots freeze solid in exposed containers.
Winter Pruning
December's bare branches reveal tree structure clearly, making it perfect for pruning deciduous trees and shrubs. Apple and pear trees, wisteria and grapevines all benefit from winter cuts. Remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches using clean, sharp tools, cutting at an angle just above outward-facing buds. Avoid pruning spring-flowering shrubs like forsythia or lilac, as their flower buds are already set. Cutting now means sacrificing next year's blooms.
Supporting Wildlife
Garden wildlife struggles in December. Keep bird feeders filled with sunflower seeds, suet and peanuts and provide fresh water daily. Leave some seedheads standing as these feed winter birds and create beautiful frost-touched displays.
Create habitat piles with pruned branches in quiet corners. These shelters become havens for hedgehogs and beneficial insects that will help control pests next season.
Planning and Simple Tasks
Use December's slower pace to plan next year's garden. Browse seed catalogues and order bare-root roses, fruit trees and hedging plants for winter planting. Check stored dahlia tubers and begonias for rot, keeping them cool and dry.
On milder days, plant late tulip bulbs, harvest winter vegetables and turn compost heaps. Clean and sharpen garden tools so everything is ready for spring.
December gardening teaches patience and rewards preparation. By protecting plants, supporting wildlife and planning thoughtfully, you're investing in future abundance. This quiet month reminds us that rest and careful stewardship are essential foundations for the vibrant growth ahead.
Normal service will be resumed next month. Happy Gardening!

Holy Trinity Church Kneelers
Anne Young has just completed stitching her latest kneeler depicting Cam Valley Orchards’ shop (pictured right). This is her eighteenth kneeler depicting various buildings and landmarks in the village! She has just started one of Sheene Mill in Melbourn.
The first ten kneelers to be completed in Holy Trinity Church were stitched by villagers in 1963 with the help of Mrs Jude, who started the project. She was an exceptional embroiderer who ran evening classes at Melbourn Village College. We have seven similar kneelers. Nowadays most of these hassocks, which are bigger than the ones made since 2000, are used by the priest and the choir. The tapestries were cleaned using potato starch and then re-upholstered by Gillian Laird.
Mrs Jude taught many of our first stitchers, including Joan Gipson who later stitched a tapestry showing bells (pictured left) celebrating her husband John who was captain of the bells at Holy Trinity Church for many years.
For the Millennium, Mary Course directed a group who completed ten identical kneelers depicting a world-wide theme.
Our new project started in 2011, with Lizanne van Essen helping us with designs taken from artifacts in the church and the churchyard. She and I, with a number of others went to visit several churches to look at their designs, colours and stitches. We were impressed by the kneelers in Saffron Walden church; the main background colour was matched with the colour of the carpet and individual designs featuring a large number of individual interests, such as music were contained within a quatrefoil, outlined in the same colour throughout. We decided to follow their design plan taking the background colour from the carpet (the same colour used in the millennium kneelers and close to the carpet colour), with red defining the quatrefoil and edges of the kneeler and pale blue for the outside of the individual designs in the quatrefoils. In each corner in the same red are the initials HT (for Holy Trinity Church). Stitchers are encouraged to “sign” their kneelers and if they wished add a dedication round the sides of the kneeler.
We had enormous help and encouragement from Mrs Sanderson of Colorcraft in Saffron Walden (alas no longer with us) who was a mine of information on tapestry and stitching in general. We are now able to buy the canvases and wools online from a Yorkshire firm, Spinning Jenny. The designs for almost all of the kneelers are expertly drawn by Lizanne van Essen and Gill Laird still upholsters our finished canvases.
To date we have completed 65 kneelers (including my design on the right) and three cushions and are planning to hang the kneelers on the back of the new chairs in the church. We are also thinking of stitching kneelers for the chancel.
We have five dedicated stitchers plus our designer Lizanne van Essen and would love new members. We meet once a month in the winter. Please join us: no previous experience of stitching required! Please contact me for more details.

Melbourn and Meldreth Women’s Group
We meet on the fourth Tuesday of each month at either All Saints Church Hall in Melbourn or the meeting room at Holy Trinity, Meldreth. Meetings commence at 7.45pm and last about one and a half hours. We either have a speaker or some in -house entertainment and we then have refreshments and a chance to socialise. A charge of £2 is made to cover expenses. This year we are supporting the Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust. At our October meeting we had some festive music while we made decorations for our tree for Meldreth Christmas Tree Festival. In November we will have had a talk by our vicar, the Rev. Andrew Birks entitled “Advent Reflection”. Our next meeting will be held at ASCH Melbourn on January 27th and will be our AGM and supper, when will vote for the charity which we will support in 2026.
If you require any information about the group or a lift, please telephone one of the committee members. They are Diane Blundell (01763) 221415, Sue Toule (01763) 260955, Angela Leach (01763) 262793 and Janet Backer (01763) 221492. We hope to see you soon!

Chaplaincy
As we marked Remembrance Sunday, we honoured those who served and sacrificed in war - those who gave their lives, those who returned wounded, and those who carry invisible scars. This year, as we remember the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, we also witness conflict continuing across the globe, with its horrors more visible than ever.
Today, I invite us to give thanks for another group who serve with quiet courage; the chaplains. I was recently sorting out a few things in the vestry and shoved at the back of the cupboard, and in a bit of a sorry state, was a Chaplain’s Communion set which I think was probably a military forces chaplain’s, but to be honest I do not know who it belonged to or the story behind it.
If anyone has any details of the history of this lovely box then I’d be very interested to hear about it and the person behind it! Also, if anyone has a contact at the BBC’s ‘The Repair Shop’, I’d love to get this box restored to a better state!
What Is Chaplaincy?
Chaplaincy is a ministry of presence. It brings the Gospel beyond church walls, into hospitals, prisons, military units, schools, and workplaces. Chaplains meet people in moments of crisis, pain, and transition. They offer comfort, not judgment; listening, not preaching. This is not a lesser calling. It is a frontline ministry—incarnational, compassionate, and deeply Christlike.
I think that there are five ways Chaplaincy reflects Christ in Christian Chaplaincy.
Compassion in Action
Chaplains embody Christ’s love by comforting the grieving, binding the brokenhearted, and sitting with the suffering, just as Jesus did.
Presence in Critical Places
They serve as God’s ambassadors in places of fear, trauma, and moral complexity, bringing light where it’s most needed.
Advocacy and Justice
Chaplains stand with the voiceless, defending dignity and offering hope in harsh environments.
Spiritual Maturity
This ministry demands wisdom, discernment, and deep spiritual grounding. Chaplains must be trustworthy, prayerful, and wise.
Servant Leadership
Like Jesus, chaplains lead by serving. They offer encouragement, guidance, and care, often without recognition.
Not just on Remembrance Sunday but at all times, let us give thanks not only for those who fought, but also for those who walked beside them. Chaplains of all faiths have travelled with troops, comforted the dying, and supported the livingmentally, pastorally, and faithfully. Let us remember those chaplains who lost their lives in service. And let us pray for all those Chaplains who continue to serve today in war zones, hospitals, prisons and communities.

Development in the Benefice
Holy Trinity, Meldreth
As I write this, the church is closed and we are heading towards the reopening date with speed, and the lighting scheme is taking shape. The church is due to re-open with a special ‘Songs of Praise’ service at 6.00pm on Sunday 23rd November. Due to the lead time, we will not have the new chairs in time for the reopening but that gives us an opportunity for another party when they arrive! We then begin the process of looking at a new altar for the nave, and dealing with the paint work following the damp, which has almost dried out since the drainage works completed in 2024. There is also some work to do on the tower and the roof, so fundraising continues!
All Saints’, Melbourn
The hard work continues to raise funds for the project which has a price tag of £150,000. We have had raised almost £75,000 so far, but we clearly have a long way to go.
You will have noticed that we just don’t look our best at the moment and I am sorry about that. We are now in this rather frustrating period of having to wait for an archaeologist to come and examine the ground under where the pews were, to understand whether or not we have found something significant. We cannot proceed without their permission, which is unlikely to come before January. Once we have the update, I will let you know. In the meantime, we are still fundraising to provide the funds for the Community Space. Please help where you can!

Meldreth Parish Council
www.meldreth-pc.org.uk
Meeting of the Parish Council held on Thursday 6th November 2025
The Parish Council meeting was held in the Community Room in Elin Way. The main points are set out below in the usual summary format. The full formal minutes can be viewed in due course on the website noted above and on the Parish Council noticeboard; these will be presented for approval at the next Council meeting.
Discussions and Decisions.
District and County Reports
The Council thanks our District and County Councillors for their latest report; this can be seen on pages 41-43.
Village Traffic
The Village Traffic Group recently met to discuss the options for the next round of Local Highway Initiatives (LHI). The Group favoured investigating the possibility of a zebra crossing between the village school and the village hall, noting that there is already provision in the relevant roadside barriers for such a facility. The results of this research will be brought to a future Parish Council meeting for further consideration.
The Community LHI (resurfacing and repairing the High Street footway between the Aurora Meldreth Manor School and the centre of the village) is now listed for further detailed planning by the County Highways officers. The Council has agreed to contribute just over £10,000, with the greater part of community funding being provided by supporters of Aurora. The bulk of the funding comes from the County budgets.
Finance
UK interest rates remain favourable for early repayment of our Public Works Loan Board facility for Mettle Hill and the Council will obtain an up-to-date quotation for this.
Emergency Plan
Many communities now have plans to deal with unexpected emergencies including flooding, fires and major accidents such as might arise through aviation mishaps. The Council will be considering the scope of such plans, which are intended to specify issues including immediate response and safety for community members.
Parish Council Burial Ground
More space will be needed for burials in the village and the first step in this is to discuss the possibility of acquiring further land adjacent to the burial ground in Fenny Lane so that a natural enlargement might be arranged. This will be raised with local landowners.
Meldreth Road Shepreth Rail Crossing
It was agreed that the Council would express support for the concerns expressed by Shepreth Parish Council with regard to the installation of double-crossing gates and the effects that these would have on road safety and delays to traffic in both directions on this part of the road between the two villages.
Recreation Ground
The Council has decided to go ahead with the first stage of enhancing the recreation ground by installing a hard surface for basketball/netball and five-a-side football, financed mainly by Section 106 funds. This work will also include repairs to some existing facilities; the slide, the three-way springer and the rocking horse. There is an article about this project below.
Defibrillator
Discussions are continuing about the siting of a defibrillator near the Fenny Lane crossroads. The possibility of using a recycled red telephone box to house the equipment is under consideration.
Neighbourhood Plan
Following the recent scoping meeting, there will be a detailed update in Meldreth Matters, probably early in the New Year.
Next Parish Council Meeting
The next scheduled meeting of the Council will take place on Thursday 4th December 2025 at 7.30pm in the Elin Way Community Room. The January meeting of the Council will take place on Thursday 8th January 2026 at 7.30pm.
Meldreth Parish Council
Recreation Ground Development
Meldreth Parish Council is pleased to confirm that in early 2026 the next phase of upgrading of our recreation ground will take place. A hard surface play area will be installed with goals and netball/basketball hoops at each end. It will replace the existing hoops but be placed further away from the housing and much closer to the football pitch; the play area will be surfaced with high quality but durable artificial grass. The zip wire will be replaced with a newer model which will be moved to the position of the existing kick wall (which will be removed), running parallel to the ditch.
These improvements were defined and are mainly being financed from funds delivered from the developers of Marvell Green under a Section106 scheme which is agreed between the District Council and the developer to allocate funding by the developer to community projects. There will be some disruption at the recreation ground while the works are carried out but the contractor will keep these to a minimum and the children's play area and football pitch will remain accessible
throughout. In addition to these improvements, we hope to carry out some repairs in the children’s play area, principally resurfacing around the slide. This will mean some of the equipment will be out of use but only for a brief period.

District and County Councillor Report
It has been a busy few weeks and we’d like to thank all who’ve been in touch with questions, concerns, and ideas. Below we report on some of the main developments in local democracy we’ve had the privilege to be involved in as your district and county councillors.
Meldreth Road Level Crossing, Shepreth
In the last issue of Meldreth Matters, we reported that Network Rail now seeks to replace the single barriers at this level crossing with double barriers as part of the C3R Cambridge re-signalling project. As we indicated, this was part of a public inquiry for a Transport and Works Act Order, which concluded in 2023.
At the time, significant input from Meldreth and Shepreth persuaded the inspector that “there is not a compelling case in the public interest to justify conferring on Network Rail powers to compulsorily acquire and use land for the purposes of the level crossing upgrade elements of the scheme at this location. Moreover, the stopping-up of the sections of street identified in the Order to enable this element of the scheme, at this location, to be implemented is not justified.”
Having acquired the necessary land in the meantime by other means, Network Rail is now seeking to replace of the level crossing through a different mechanism: a Level Crossing Change Order. These are issued by the Office of Rail and Road on behalf of the Secretary of State. In this process, only the Local Transport Authority, which is the County Council, is consulted.
The credibility of the process is not helped by the fact that Network Rail and the Office for Rail and Road appear to be setting aside answers to questions which were at least partially answered during the public enquiry – questions such as how “safe” is the crossing before and after the change? or how will waiting times when the barriers are closed be affected, and how could this displace local traffic, with further knock-on consequences for safety? It is also unhelpful that the outcome of the enquiry is sometimes reported in a manner that is liable to confuse, even through some official government channels. Like any public body, Network Rail can only operate with a social licence.
Very regrettably, the change from single to double barriers will mean longer down times when the barriers are closed because of the way different barrier systems operate.
At the time of Meldreth Matters going to press, we are still intensively liaising with Parish and County councillors, with the support of our local Member of Parliament, to determine what can be done to influence the outcome.
When the level crossing work goes ahead as currently anticipated, there will be a period of closure of the road and train line as well as a period without train services. The road will be closed from 13th December and the trainline from 25th December, both reopening on 5th January. The diversion will be via Malton Lane, Meldreth.
Draft Local Plan – “The most important document you’ve never heard of”
The draft Local Plan and supporting evidence has been published ahead of a public consultation which will run from 1st December 2025 to 30th January 2026. Cambridge City Council and South Cambridgeshire District Council are working together to create this joint Local Plan for the Greater Cambridge area. The plan sets out the future land use and planning policies for the area for the period 2024-2045.
The Local Plan identifies the need for new homes and jobs, the services and infrastructure to support them, and guides where this development should happen. It has been informed by several stages of public engagement and working with stakeholders. There is a useful little video to help people understand what the Local Plan is and its importance: https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=Oa9MrnoELU0.
So far, the draft Local Plan exists only in reports to relevant committees at both SCDC and the City Council. These are public meetings and if you wish to get ahead of the game you can pick through the meeting papers here: https:// tinyurl.com/ynwxkk5a. Alternatively, you can wait until a more user-friendly version becomes available in readiness for the consultation.
Flood Resilience Campaign
The council has launched a new flood resilience campaign to improve flood preparedness and communications about flooding. As part of the campaign, practical advice and resources will be shared through the Council’s website and social media channels. This includes how to sign up for flood alerts, report flooding to the appropriate authority and access support to form or join a community flood group. For more information and to get involved, visit https:// www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/flood-prepare, or follow the campaign on social media, using #CambsFloodResilience.
Stay Safe, Warm and Well This Winter With #BeWinterWise
Following two successful years, that have seen thousands of residents supported, Cambridgeshire County Council has relaunched its #BeWinterWise campaign, featuring Olly the Owl, for winter 2025–26.
The campaign aims to help Cambridgeshire residents stay safe, warm and healthy throughout the colder months by sharing practical advice, highlighting local support and encouraging communities to look out for one another. www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/news/stay-safe-warm-and-well-this-winter-withbewinterwise
Local Government Reorganisation
We have reported about this at some length in every issue of Meldreth Matters since May. The County Council has now submitted its preferred option (A) to government for its consideration. South Cambridgeshire District Council has been promoting Option B but the decision will be made by a vote on 24th November, after this issue of Meldreth Matters has gone to press.
From the perspective of someone living in South Cambridgeshire, Option A means Cambridge City, South and East Cambridgeshire forming a new unitary authority, while Option B means Cambridge City and South Cambridgeshire forming a new unitary authority.
We will provide a fuller update when East Cambridgeshire, Fenland, Huntingdonshire and Peterborough have also submitted their preferred option. In the end the government will select which option will be implemented in 2028. www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/news/full-council-sends-forward-option-a-proposalfor-local-government-reorganisation
Cambridge South Station
The opening of Cambridge South station has been delayed to the middle of 2026, due to the collapse of a contractor. Our Community Rail Partnership is planning an online information meeting for local residents in due course.
Highway Faults – Report It
Please continue to report issues and let us know if a fault is not dealt with satisfactorily: www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/residents/travel-roads-andparking/roads-and-pathways/roadworks-and-faults
Consultations and Small Grants
A reminder that both the District and the County Council regularly run consultations and engagement exercises to seek views and input from residents. South Cambridgeshire District Council and Cambridgeshire County Council also offer a variety of small grants and also act as conduits for government funded grants. These often close before the relevant issue of Meldreth Matters is published, but you can find details on the respective council websites and look out for the South Cambridgeshire Magazine which should be coming through your letter box in early December.
Holiday Activities and Food Programme
The Cambridgeshire Holiday Activities and Food programme will now continue until 2029, following confirmation of government funding. This year, the council’s programme is available for eligible families from 22nd December to 2nd January. More information about support can be found at: www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/council/communities/support-with-the-cost-of-living/ holiday-activities-and-food-programme#introduction-0-0.
With best wishes for Christmas.
