The Best Place to Hear To cap what has already been a diverse and exciting year, Melbourne Recital Centre presents an array of vibrant performances from October to December. Melbourne Festival takes over the Centre in October with a panoply of events, including the centenary celebration of Schoenberg’s revolutionary dark cabaret piece Pierrot lunaire, with dance devised by Phillip Adams of BalletLab. Renowned genre-hopping mavericks Bang on a Can All-Stars travel to Australia for the exclusive Australian Premiere of their multimedia anthology concert, Field Recordings, and a live performance of Brian Eno’s iconic album, Music For Airports.

Our Local Heroes present their final concerts for 2012 and we slip into the Christmas spirit with a program of choral and orchestral delights for children and adults alike. Wilma & Friends #2 The second concert of this year’s Wilma & Friends series showcases the talents of two of Melbourne’s emerging musical stars – cellist William Hewer and bassist Phoebe Russell. In a performance of Bottesini’s Duo for cello and bass, as well as the Dvorˇák and Glazunov String Quintets,

The interplay of the soloists in Bach’s Double Violin Concerto ranges from the athletic to the rapturous, making it one of the most compelling conversations in all music and a perennial audience favourite.

In contrast to Bach’s intricate perfection, early-Baroque composer Biber’s vivid depiction of a battle comes complete with cannon-fire and other very special effects.

Kristian Chong Appearing regularly with many of Australia’s finest chamber ensembles, musicians and orchestras, Kristian Chong has carved out an impressive and busy concert career in Australia and abroad.

Discover this talented musician in solo recital. The stern humour and wit of Haydn’s B minor Sonata is juxtaposed with the gorgeous harmonies of the seldom-performed Brahms Variations on an Original Theme No.1. Rachmaninov’s Preludes Op.32 highlight the potential for resonance and contrast at the modern piano, including Rachmaninov’s personal favourite (B minor). Singing and speaking are our two main forms of communicating with sound, yet we still know very little about how they are related in the brain. This presentation reviews what we do know about the brain when we sing, speak or sing with words.

The findings are important for understanding how the brain changes with singing training, and how we can use singing to retrain the brain to speak after injury.

Pianist/composer Gemma Turvey launches her eagerly-awaited album, Landscapes for a Mind’s Eye, with her chamber ensemble, the New Palm Court Orchestra. The Orchestra is a natural extension of Turvey’s jazz piano trio work, bringing to life the evocative, cinematic qualities inherent in her music.

Palm court orchestras were popular in the 1920s and 30s for playing light instrumental music in an intimate setting. The New Palm Court Orchestra injects this seductive format with a new and fresh vitality.

This concert will also feature guest soloists including Craig Beard (vibraphone), Luke Moller (violin) and singers from Ensemble Gombert.

Veteran Australian singer/songwriter Paul Kelly joins forces with 10 performers from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) to present the world premiere season of an original song cycle based on the poetry of W.B. Yeats, Lord Alfred Tennyson, Judith Wright, Kenneth Slessor and Les Murray, as well as several new lyrics of his own. Created by Kelly in collaboration with ANAM’s 2011 resident composer, James Ledger, Conversations with Ghosts is a bittersweet reflection on the nature of mortality and an uplifting memorial to those who have been lost.

This renegade company casts its decidedly unorthodox gaze over ancient Greek legend with The Minotaur Trilogy, an opera told over three suitably epic chapters. Taking its inspiration from Monteverdi’s famous lost opera – of which the celebrated Lamento d’Arianna is the only fragment that remains – this work finds the ageless story of thwarted love, misplaced heroism and tragic human failings twisted, inverted and collapsed, a strange new mythology conjured from a familiar tale. O From the seeds of tragedy comes a powerful new fusion of samples, orchestral music and Brazilian rhythms, created by one of Australia’s most innovative composers.

A young American man was shot dead on the eve of his 30th birthday in May 2007, after intervening in an attempted mugging in the party district of Lapa in Rio de Janeiro.

The gunman was an off-duty police officer and the event shone a light on Brazil’s epidemic of police violence. Tamil Rogeon, one of the visionaries behind the cut-up jazz brilliance of Melbourne’s The Raah Project, takes this story as a framework for a stunning new work – a sweeping, cinematic amalgam of samba, beats, brass, woodwinds and strings. Part concert, oratorio, DJ set and hip-hop collage, 24 Hours in Lapa channels a disparate mix of sounds into a singular concoction, an energetic sonic fusion tracing the contours of a young man’s final hours. Now Fain makes good on the promise of his earlier projects with Portals, a one-man multimedia marvel that pushes at the boundaries of classical performance. Bang on a Can All-Stars

Elizabeth Sellars and Marshall McGuire are the ideal performers for this richly coloured and utterly charming program. France in the 19th and 20th centuries was a wonderful place for harpists: an outpouring of technical and musical innovation for the instrument captured the imagination of composers such as Hasselmans and Saint-Saëns. Bang on a Can has been a vital force in American music for 25 years. Somewhere between a rock band, jazz combo and a classical ensemble, the new-music mavericks borrow freely from every musical tradition, with a sound that’s impossible to categorise but utterly unmistakable. Composers Michael Gordon, David Lang and Julia Wolfe created the first Bang on a Can Marathon concert in 1987 in order to break down the barriers that separate musical communities. Their idea was simple: instead of sorting music by style, genre, or venue it would be more powerful to group music by innovation, finding the rebels in each musical community, the restless creators not content to leave conventions unchallenged. The Bang on a Can All-Stars, a permanent ensemble formed in 1992, pursue this mission year-round, astonishing audiences worldwide and shattering the definition of what concert music is today.

Elizabeth Sellars and Marshall McGuire are the ideal performers for this richly coloured and utterly charming program. France in the 19th and 20th centuries was a wonderful place for harpists: an outpouring of technical and musical innovation for the instrument captured the imagination of composers such as Hasselmans and Saint-Saëns. Bach’s violin sonata is transformed with harp accompaniment while Melbourne composer Stuart Greenbaum’s Nine Candles for Dark Nights makes an evocative centrepiece for the year’s final concert.

Bang on a Can has been a vital force in American music for 25 years. Somewhere between a rock band, jazz combo and a classical ensemble, the new-music mavericks borrow freely from every musical tradition, with a sound that’s impossible to categorise but utterly unmistakable. Composers Michael Gordon, David Lang and Julia Wolfe created the first Bang on a Can Marathon concert in 1987 in order to break down the barriers that separate musical communities. Their idea was simple: instead of sorting music by style, genre, or venue it would be more powerful to group music by innovation, finding the rebels in each musical community, the restless creators not content to leave conventions unchallenged. The Bang on a Can All-Stars, a permanent ensemble formed in 1992, pursue this mission year-round, astonishing audiences worldwide and shattering the definition of what concert music is today.

A petite Buddhist nun from Nepal, Ani Choying Drolma has enchanted audiences from Hamburg to Hong Kong with the vivid purity of her mantras and songs. Acclaimed as ‘one of the finest singers of her generation living in the Himalayas’ (NVA – UK), Ani Choying Drolma presents a sublime blend of ancient and modern in a program of Tibetan Buddhist chants and traditional songs for her debut in Australia. From the age of 13, Ani Choying Drolma was trained in the sacred chants at Nagi Gompa in the Kathmandu valley of Nepal, having joined the monastery to escape an abusive father.

There she learned to forgive and found a remarkable talent. The power of her voice draws on a complex mix of devotion, confidence and raw emotion to present a rare musical treat that is authentic and straight from the heart. Magnificent and contemplative, haunting, simple and surreal – this is music that will usher you into another world.

The seductive and honeyed lyricism of Glinka’s Piano Trio links these two works and leads into a highlight of Trio Anima Mundi’s annual Concert Series – the premiere performance of the winning work from the 2012 Trio Anima Mundi Composition Prize.

Jack Liebeck has established himself as one of the most compelling violinists on the concert platform today, performing concertos recently with such orchestras as the Philharmonia, London Philharmonic and English Chamber Orchestra. In this Schumann celebration, Jack joins Melbourne musicians Howard Penny, Kristian Chong and Simon Oswell to perform two of Schumann’s greatest chamber works, his Piano Quartet and Piano Quintet. Although Schumann started composing the Quartet only a few days after completing the Quintet, the two works could not be more different; the (slightly) later work is actually the more traditional, especially in Schumann’s use of counterpoint. Assistant Leader of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Victoria Sayles, joins the ensemble for the Quintet in what promises to be a thrilling performance.

With the coming together of two of Australia’s greatest and most well-loved cultural icons, the final concert of our 2012 Australian Voices series sees violinist and pedagogue William Hennessy direct a program of exciting and surprisingly adventurous works by the doyenne of Australian composers, Miriam Hyde. Well known and loved for her pedagogical compositions by generations of Australian music students, Hyde’s concert works exhibit a rare virtuosity and level of refinement which sees them stand very much on an equal footing with many of the great works of the standard repertoire.

Ship to Shore features the extraordinary talents of the Grigoryan Brothers and The Song Company in a spirited performance for the end of the year. The brothers Grigoryan are stellar performers. Seamlessly crossing the boundaries of classical and popular guitar styles, they are the perfect collaborators for this rollicking, swashbuckling program of shanties and songs about the sea. From the coast of Newfoundland to the shores of Ireland and from the ports of Portugal to the sundrenched beaches of Brazil, the men that laboured on the tall ships were expected to sing. Back home, the women left behind found their own expression for loss and longing. This concert contains some of the most memorable sea shanties written as well as adaptations of classic sea songs.

Wang Zheng-Ting & Friends In a unique and original collaboration, Australian-Chinese master musician, Wang Zheng-Ting (sheng/mouth organ), collaborates with some of Melbourne’s finest musicians and improvisors: George Butrumlis (accordion), Matthew Fagan (guitar) and Luke Howard (piano). Geoffrey Lancaster returns to continue his enlightened exploration of works from the Classical period on Melbourne Recital Centre’s beautiful McNulty fortepiano (a forerunner of the modern piano).

Geoffrey’s ‘blend of scholarly wisdom and impeccable musicianship’ (Sydney Morning Herald) brings to life the emotionally and harmonically turbulent music of CPE Bach, two of Haydn’s late sonatas which perfectly demonstrate the composer’s improvisatory approach, and one of Beethoven’s early sonatas: its sunny good humour is indebted to his teacher, ‘Papa’ Haydn himself.

Geoffrey Lancaster returns to continue his enlightened exploration of works from the Classical period on Melbourne Recital Centre’s beautiful McNulty fortepiano (a forerunner of the modern piano).

Geoffrey’s ‘blend of scholarly wisdom and impeccable musicianship’ (Sydney Morning Herald) brings to life the emotionally and harmonically turbulent music of CPE Bach, two of Haydn’s late sonatas which perfectly demonstrate the composer’s improvisatory approach, and one of Beethoven’s early sonatas: its sunny good humour is indebted to his teacher, ‘Papa’ Haydn himself.

Geoffrey’s performance celebrates the innovation of these Classical composers, performing these works in the spirit of their time and as their original audiences would have enjoyed them.

Some of Australia’s most gifted young opera singers, fresh from the Acclaim Italian Opera Fellowship Awards and International Master Class Series, will perform the world’s most beloved arias. Christmas with the Australian Boys Choir The Australian Boys Choir has celebrated Christmas with the Melbourne community since 1939, and in 2012, the tradition continues as the boys invite you to join them for a festive treat. Christmas with the Australian Boys Choir will feature Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols, written in 1942 and first performed by the Choir in 1967. Since then this masterpiece has become a regular and much-loved staple of the repertoire. Delyth Stafford, one of this country’s leading harpists, will join the boys for this work. The remainder of the program explores the rich heritage of carols, old and new. As tradition demands, there will be opportunities for the audience to sing-along,

and there will be cameo appearances by all the ABCI training groups. Join what will be a delightful Christmas treat and long-standing festive tradition.
