YOUR IMPACT
Thank you for your support
Alex Scanlon
Philanthropy plays a vital role in the life of Melbourne Grammar School. Without your continued generosity, both to our new initiatives and the School’s purpose over the years, students would not have access to such a breadth of opportunities that enrich their education, strengthen their sense of belonging and help them realise their potential.

Melbourne Grammar School
Earlier this year, I was honoured to succeed Julian Smith as President of the Melbourne Grammar School Foundation. As I step into this role, I do so with a deep appreciation for the generations of Foundation members, donors, volunteers and leaders whose commitment has helped create such opportunities for students and strengthen the School community. This year has marked an exciting new chapter as the School’s comprehensive fundraising campaign, The Courage of Ideas, entered its community phase. The success of the campaign, which so clearly articulates the School’s mission to develop independent thinkers, I believe speaks highly of how the School’s values and purpose continue to guide us all.
Through your support of scholarships, the Jack Morrow Centre for Humanities, exceptional staff, sport performance, the arts and the Future Fund, donors are helping bring the campaign’s vision to life: developing young people with the confidence to think independently and the character to make a positive contribution to the world. On behalf of the Foundation Board, thank you for your support and trust. Your generosity is creating opportunities for students today while helping ensure Melbourne Grammar School remains a place of learning, belonging and possibility for generations to come. I look forward to sharing the continuing impact of your philanthropy in the years ahead. Alex Scanlon President, Melbourne Grammar School Foundation
An enduring commitment As I reflect on the past year, I am reminded that the Witherby Tower Society is, at its heart, a community of people who care deeply about what endures. The careful forethought of all our Witherby Tower Society members helps ensure that future generations of students can benefit from the opportunities, values and sense of belonging that have shaped so many lives. The generosity of our members continues to support the School in ways both seen and unseen. As the Courage of Ideas enters its community phase, many members of the Witherby Tower Society are helping to extend their impact through gifts that will support the School’s future and create opportunities for generations to come.
This year, we also acknowledged an inspiring example of legacy in action through the generous bequest of Rob Liddle (OM 1959), which will establish a new Scholarship fund for the School. Rob’s is a story that truly reflects the enduring power of friendship, belonging and opportunity. The Society continues to be strengthened by those who share a commitment to stewardship and longterm thinking. I am delighted to have welcomed Cavan Wee (OM 1997) and Philip Harmer (OM 1969) to the Witherby Tower Society Committee. Both bring valuable experience and a deep appreciation for creating opportunities that will endure well into the future.
Mark Roberts
On behalf of the Committee, thank you for your continued support and thoughtful generosity. Through your commitment, the Witherby Tower Society continues to play a vital role in the life of the School, helping ensure that future students can learn, grow and thrive. Kicking goals at Grimwade House One family’s gift inspires a new era in professional coaching
G
reat coaches do more than teach skills.
For Grimwade House parents Alex Singh and Kudrat Makkar, great coaching is about helping young people build confidence, discover their strengths, and learn to weigh thinking for themselves against working well with others. That belief inspired the family to support exceptional staff at Melbourne Grammar School. Their gift, received this year, has allowed for Director of Football (Soccer), Goran Stajic, to extend his work into Grimwade House and test a new pilot program for girls: Strive & Thrive. The family had long considered how they might give back to the School community. For Kudrat, it was sport and coaching’s ability to extend far beyond the field, and fulfil the promise of a holistic education, that led to their decision. “Soccer teaches teamwork. There’s a lot of resilience, confidence and leadership that comes from it,” she says.
“We’ve seen that with our son Aidan,” adds Alex. “We see his engagement in the sport, not just playing the game, but outside of that, and the friendships he’s making with his club and other friends at school. It’s given him opportunities to grow in other ways.” These are the qualities that sit at the core of Strive & Thrive. Around 50 students from Years 5 and 6 are taking part in the 10-week program, learning from the same specialist coaches who help shape Melbourne Grammar’s senior soccer program. In true Grimwade fashion, the focus is not only on developing skills, but on participation, confidence and discovering what can be learned by having a go. For Goran, success is not defined by wins and losses, but by confidence, self-belief and a willingness to step forward and try something new. Continues over page

“They can develop in their own time, in their own space, amongst their friends and their peers,” he says. “That whole self-confidence and self-esteem piece is really important.” Royce Helm, Head of Grimwade House, says the program complements the School’s broader commitment to helping students develop confidence through experience. “We know that courage is built through competence,” he says. “This program is helping girls build those fundamental competencies in an environment that is supportive, challenging and fun.

Melbourne Grammar School
The impact has also extended beyond the students themselves, offering a great boon to staff satisfaction. After decades spent coaching at the highest levels of the game, Goran says working with students discovering soccer for the first time has provided a welcome counterpoint to the intensity of elite competition. “We all spent the whole first session just smiling ear to ear,” he says. “It’s been a reminder of why we fell in love with the game in the first place.” While the program is only in its first season, Alex and Kudrat are already thinking about its long-term impact.
“Investing in something like this creates an environment where young girls feel encouraged to get involved, stay active, and believe in their abilities both on and off the field,” says Kudrat. “Once these girls leave Grimwade, they’ll always have in their minds that their love for the sport started here, and their connections as Old Melburnians will be all the more powerful.” Some of the most important lessons of childhood are learned not through results, but through having a go.
Leaps and bounds Building courage through Sport Performance
M
elbourne Grammar’s vision for sport has always extended beyond the scoreboard. Sport plays a central role in the School’s holistic approach to education, helping young people develop confidence, resilience, discipline and the courage to test themselves. Since 2024, donor support for Sport Performance has created three new General Excellence Scholarships with a preference for students who demonstrate exceptional promise in AFL and Soccer, as well as multiple professional coaching roles at the School. That commitment is now taking an important step forward in the development of a dedicated sport performance centre directly adjacent to the Strickland PE Centre. Designed to support students from Year 7 onwards, at every stage of their sporting journey, the space will provide access to strength and conditioning equipment, athletic development resources and a purpose-built environment that promotes physical development, wellbeing and performance. This next chapter has been made possible thanks to the enduring generosity of Henry Stuart Logan Clark (OM 1921), whose Will established the Warren Clark bequest.
Henry’s gift continues to create opportunities for Melbourne Grammar students decades after his lifetime, and now through the sport performance centre, the School honours a benefactor whose commitment to future generations remains deeply relevant today. Born in Toorak in 1902, Henry Stuart Logan Clark attended Melbourne Grammar before pursuing a successful career as a stockbroker and later serving with distinction during the Second World War. Through the charitable trust established by his estate, his generosity continues to support the institutions and communities that shaped his life. Dan Martin, Acting Head of Senior School Sport and Head of Athletic Development says the new performance centre reflects a vision of sport as a pathway to growth for every student. “Whether a student is training in a First team or simply seeking to become stronger, healthier and more confident, the space will provide opportunities for growth and development,” he says.

Full Circle A gift inspired by gratitude
D
r Frank Lin (OM 1995) has dedicated his career to restoring possibility.
Frank is a specialist reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgeon, and whether treating patients in Melbourne or through his humanitarian work overseas, he has seen first-hand the difference that opportunity and support can make. It is a lesson that began much earlier, as a scholarship recipient at Melbourne Grammar School. “My time at Melbourne Grammar School was only made possible through a bursary,” Frank says. “My parents were first-generation migrants who worked incredibly hard to bring our family to Australia, and I had applied for an academic scholarship,” he adds. “Perhaps, at the time, I didn’t really understand its impact; but looking back now, I can see that it was an important moment that shaped the course of my schooling.” Today, Frank and his wife, Angela Yang, are helping create opportunities for future generations through their support of the Jack Morrow Centre for Humanities. Their gift, which also includes a bequest commitment to the School, will be recognised through a naming association within the new Morrow Centre for the Witherby House room, honouring Frank’s enduring connection to his old House and the community that helped shape his journey.
Dr Frank Lin (OM 1995) and Angela Yang For Frank, the decision to support the Morrow Centre was a natural one. “I always enjoyed the Humanities at school,” he says. “The Jack Morrow Centre feels like a fitting place to give back, especially since it’s now the home of Witherby, my old House.” While his career has taken him to some of the world’s leading centres for plastic and reconstructive surgery, and into operating theatres across the AsiaPacific through humanitarian missions, one lesson from his time at Melbourne Grammar has remained constant: the value of community. “Even when I was overseas, many years after graduating, I would run into someone who shared that Grammar connection,” Frank says. “That sense of belonging and support wasn’t obvious to me when I was a student, but it became clearer as I progressed in my medical career.” Those experiences have also given him a deep appreciation for the role that opportunity and possibility can have in people’s lives.
“I think those of us living in Australia are incredibly fortunate, because opportunity exists on so many levels,” he says. “It was only through working overseas, including in places that are less fortunate, that you really gain perspective on how lucky we are.” That perspective lies at the heart of Frank’s philanthropy. “I’m grateful for the support the School gave me, which allowed me to be part of this community,” he says. “I hope that one day, a student who had a similar start to mine will experience the same kind of opportunity and support that I did.” Looking back, Frank encourages today’s students to make the most of the opportunities before them. “Value that opportunity and really make the most of what’s around you,” he says. “Take part in activities, try new things, and never underestimate how short that time is. Most of all, stay connected, because the School’s community stays with you long after your years there.”

Melbourne Grammar School
† Deceased
A year of courage and possibility This year has been marked by remarkable momentum for our School community. As Director of Community Relations, I am incredibly proud and grateful for what has been achieved with your support. In 2026 we have seen the completion of the Jack Morrow Centre for Humanities: a significant moment in the life of the School. More than a new building, it reflects our shared belief in the value of curiosity, independent thinking and the courage to explore ideas. To see this vision realised through the generosity and commitment of so many members of our community has been deeply rewarding. We also celebrated an important milestone in the School’s comprehensive fundraising campaign, The Courage of Ideas, which we launched publicly earlier this year – eclipsing our initial goal of $30 million in support of Scholarships, Learning Environments and our other philanthropic pillars. The trust and belief that you, our alumni, parents, grandparents, staff, and friends have placed in our promise to empower the next generation of independent thinkers, is incredibly special.
To explore some of the ways you can support the School, please contact: Carl Junot Head of Development + 61 3 9865 7683 cljunot@mgs.vic.edu.au
Murray Osborne Head of Alumni and Community Engagement +61 3 9865 7681 kahooper@mgs.vic.edu.au
Luisa Moscato School Archivist +61 3 9865 7658 lamoscato@mgs.vic.edu.au
As I reflect on the stories, conversations and acts of generosity that have shaped this year, I am reminded that the strength of Melbourne Grammar School lies not only in its history, but in the people who continue to invest in its future, as we can all recognise the profound impact education can have on a young person’s life. Thank you for your ongoing support and for being part of this extraordinary community. Kate Barnett Director of Community Relations + 61 3 9865 7680 kmbarnett@mgs.vic.edu.au
