MATCH REPORTS 2024 SO FAR...

It’s been 6 weeks since our last home match so it’s good to be back on home turf. Since the poor home defeat by South Normanton Athletic, we have had 5 away games, and some tough ones at that. The run started at Mansfield Hoisery Mills, where we came away with a 4-1 win, Isaac Nkumrah, Oscar Supple, Macauley Jones and Tyler Withers doing the damage. This was followed by a 7-0 midweek humbling at Mickleover Res, the worst performance of the season, coupled with Mickleover playing several fringe first teamers, made it a very awkward night for the lads. The games didn’t get any easier as 4 days later we face an unbeaten Derby Singh Brothers in the Derbyshire Cup Semi -Final. Several injuries and unavailability meant we went with 12 men, but produced an impressive first half performance to lead 3 -1; Sam Simpson, Oscar Supple and Tyler Withers on the scoresheet. Singh fought back in the second-half and equalised in injury time to force a penalty shoot out. For a sixth shoot-out in a row we lost out and crashed out of this competition at the semi -final stage for fourth time in the last five seasons.

Battered and bruised, just 3 days later another midweek match awaited the lads. This time top of the table Pinxton. A close game saw Pinxton edge it 1-0, but the result did not matter as Isaac Nkumrah suffered a broken tibia midway through the second half. A really poor refereeing performance saw no protection afforded to the players. and one too many over the top tackles saw an early end to Isaac’s season. We wish him all the best in his recovery. An away trip to AFC Normanton awaited after Pinxton, 4 days earlier, with us yet again down to the bones - a bare 11 on the day after 4 dropouts early Saturday morning saw the lads up against it but a dominant display saw us come away with a 5 -0 win. Jammy was chief tormentor, with 4 of the goals and Tyler Withers grabbing the other. It’s good to be back on home turf and he’s hoping for 3 points today as we host Linby Colliery Welfare

TODAY’S OPPONENTS

Originally formed in 1892, Linby won the Notts FA Junior Cup in 1896 and reached the Semi Final of the Notts Senior Cup in 1905, losing to Nottm. Forest Reserves, who went onto win the Cup. They disbanded in the early 1930s. Re-Formed in 1946, under the shrewd guidance of ex Arsenal player Ernest “Tim” Coleman, Linby became the biggest non-League Club in Notts, in the space of ten heady years. Honours included Notts Alliance Titles, Central Alliance Titles, six consecutive Notts Senior Cup Final appearances, 3 wins 1950, 52 and 54. Linby were the last “Hucknall” based club to reach the First Round (Proper) of the FA Cup, in November 1950 , they hosted Gillingham in front of a record 6,585 crowd, at the old Gatehouse Ground. An astonishing 20,500 packed into Forests City ground to witness Linbys first Notts Senior Cup win, against Retford. A record for the competition. Crowds of over 2,500 flocked to the Gatehouse for Linbys League games.

When Coleman was tempted away, to save Notts County from Re-Election, in 1956, Linbys fortunes dipped. With relegation from the Central Alliance, in 1964, Linby were no longer the top Hucknall district club. The 1970s saw Rick Bentley and Phil Cresswell manage Linby in the old East Midlands League. But in order to stay in the League, Linby had to move from the now crumbling Gatehouse Ground and play their home games at Annesley Welfare. Sadly the iconic old ground has now gone, we moved to our present base in 1985. Church Lane was originally the Collieries Cricket ground, built in 1925. Dave Ingram lead the Club back though the Divisions of the Notts Alliance , then in 2005 the Club attained FA Charter Standard status , and finished Runners up , the newly formed Notts Senior League, under Manager Dave Bradshaw. After suffering a series of Cup Final defeats , in the late 2000s, the Club reached rock bottom in 2011, finishing with only 3 wins all season. Dave Bradshaw came back as Joint Manager along with Dave Marlow, and Linbys fortunes turned around again. Under Marlows guidance the Club has now established itself in the Central Midlands League.

12

Linby have now definite 5 year Business and Football plans, and are looking to make major developments to its Church Lane Ground. The first of which, we moved and widened the main pitch, to facilitate the installation of Floodlights. But the big priority is to build a new Dressing Rooms/Clubhouse. Planning permission has been granted by Gedling Council, and the Clubs Development Group are working hard to raise the £200,000 required for the whole project. 2021-22, we enjoyed our best season for 27 years, when Andy Tring led the First team to a record 5th placed finish in the CML Premier Division South, and an historic CML League cup win, defeating Mickleover RBL on penalties, following a 1-1 draw AET. This season sees Andy step up to a General Managers role, due to work commitments. Matt Peberday, last year’s Assistant, takes over the first team managers role. Ade Gibson comes on board as Reserve Team Manager, and we have expanded to three teams. Jonathan Wass will Manager our new Under 16 boys team.

ROYAL BOYS FC Things are moving quickly in the African continent, as our Tanzanian sister-club, Royal Boys FC , are starting to show great progress. As a club, we donated £150 to Royal Boys FC, to allow them to purchase new football goal posts. Previously, the club were playing at a local secondary school, where the goal posts were made from locally sourced wood.

This provided many problems, with the posts constantly breaking when struck with a ball.

But those problems are now a thing of the past, with their brand-new metal goalposts. These posts were manufactured and installed by a local metalworker in the village, providing them with much -valued income. These goalposts will now provide the local villagers, including children, a safe space to play football and develop their skills. We look forward to seeing further progress in the months to come!
