ALLENTON UNIITED

SATURDAY 09TH DECEMBER 2023 | 13:30 It was a change of scenery for the First Team, as the quarter-final of the Derbyshire Divisional Cup South took centre-stage, as we hosted Allenton United. No fewer than eight players were unavailable (Cox, Hughes, Fox, Bodill, Gosling, Poynton Worger and Muir), due to injury, work or holiday. This meant the First Team were down to only twelve available players. In came Burkey for his debut between the sticks. Allenton started strongly, kicking with the wind and took the lead when a free-kick flew straight under Burkey and trickled in the net. The home side were struggling to get out their own half at times, such was the strength of the wind. Allenton increased their lead midway through the half, when a slick move down the left saw the lively centre-forward finish well. His strike-partner was delivering some dangerous balls into the box and 5 minutes before half-time, a corner hit the bar only for the rebound to be poked home. The away side were in dreamland taking a 3-0 lead at the break. The message from the management was clear; let’s make sure we put as much pressure on as we can in the second-half with the wind at our backs. The second-half started with oneway traffic, but the final ball and quality eluded Dynamo. The only change was made as Tovell was introduced at the expense of a defender. This seemed to work, as the extra player going forward meant we picked up more loose balls and gained more momentum. On 80 minutes, Macca floated in a free-kick which Tovell expertly headed home. The home side tails were now up and good work in midfield saw the ball fed out to Withers who cut the ball back for Pev to finish low to the keepers left. Could we force a penalty shoot out?

6

Almost from the next attack we won the ball centrally worked it again to Withers who picked out Tovell at the back stick and he thrashed the ball home for 3-3! Into injury time we went and just as penalties looked likely once again we stayed patient and Withers did well to beat his man on the right and fed a low cross in where Jammy stroked it home at the back stick to send the home support up in raptures! A quite remarkable come-back and “never say die” attitude as the lads march-on into the semi-finals! Up The Dynamos!

TODAY’S OPPONENTS

The nickname ‘Shiners’ derives from the mid-1750s when South Normanton was at the heart of the ribbed stocking industry. The people involved in this craft worked long hours sitting at their windows on wooden stools, so much so that the backsides of their trousers became very shiny making them instantly recognisable as coming from the South Normanton area; since then local people have been referred to as ‘Shiners’. The club was originally known as South Normanton Miners Welfare and played under that name until 1990. Under the new name South Normanton Athletic joined the Central Midlands League in the 1990–91 season. The club's first major success came in the 1993–94 season when they finished runners up in the Premier Division. This gained them promotion to the Supreme Division. The club made their first entry into the FA Vase in the 1994–95 season. In the 1996–97 season the old changing rooms were destroyed by fire. The club's future lay in the balance and with limited time available members of the committee virtually worked round the clock to convert a derelict building into suitable changing rooms, which at the time were intended to be for a temporary period only the leagues deadline for completion was accomplished with little time to spare. At the end of the 1996–97 season, the club was relegated due to the 3-year flood light installation rule not being met; funds set aside to complete this project had been spent in establishing new changing rooms. The floodlights were completed in 1998 and the club was reinstated back into the supreme division. The team's best position being 3rd which was a promotion place. The club was promoted to the NCEL for the start of the 2003–04 season where they played till the club decided to fold at the end of the 2007–08 season due to an ageing committee and no new blood coming to the club. The club reformed with a new committee under the chairmanship of Phil Bailey, with new management and players. Despite 5 seasons of promise, the dream of promotion could not be realised despite numerous top 3 finishes. 2013 brought the summer appointment of former Borrowash Victoria manager Mark Wilson to the club. The team started strongly with 10 victories and 2 draws from the first twelve games, before a winter of weather postponements brought an abrupt end to the form. Victories became harder to come by in the New Year, and a run of one win in eight threatened to derail the promotion dream. However, Wilson steered the team to a strong run in and a runners-up finish. This was enough to guarantee a promotion to Step 6 East Midlands Counties League for the first time since the club's re-formation. After finishing 2nd in the 2016–17 season they were promoted to the Midland League Premier Division after champions West Bridgford refused promotion. On 6 April 2020, South Normanton Athletic announced that they had resigned from the Midland Football League. For the 2020/2021 season, SNAFC successfully applied and resumed their status at Step 7 football in the Central Midlands Premier League. As the 2023/24 season gets underway, things are now looking up for South Normanton Athletic once again with a fresh new management team, new squad, new committee members and fresh investment into the club and it’s facilities which will hopefully help bring back some positivity and success back to Lees Lane.

ROYAL BOYS FC Our sister-club, Royal Boys FC, have taken their first-steps as a new club. Training has commenced at the Amsha Stadium in Shangarai, Tanzania. Just before Christmas, we asked for donations of old football kit - and you did not disappoint. Four boxes of kit were sent to Tanzania, to provide Royal Boys FC and local children in the village with the equipment they need to help promote football in their community. We now wait patiently for the boxes to make the 7190 mile journey to East Africa.
