BARGATE ROVERS

SATURDAY 04TH NOVEMBER 2023 | 14:00 It was Derbyshire Cup action for the First Team, a competition in which we had been crowned champions 3 times in the past. A favourable 2nd Round draw also, a home-tie against Bargate Rovers from the division below.

Missing through holidays were Withers, Moore, Simpson, Tovell and Smith, whilst Gosling, Macca and Worger were all unavailable, that left us with just the 12 lads available. A flat start from Dynamos ensued and the lads seemed surprised by our opponents, who looked lively at times and weren’t about to roll over and let us get the win. The first half played out a cagey affair and the score remained 0-0 at the break. Some harsh words and a bit of reality from the management at half time certainly did the trick, as quick-fire goals from Supple and Goodband put us 2-0 up, only for the away side to half the deficit after some slack defending. Nkrumah quickly restored the two-goal advantage, as we took control of the game. Peverley and Goodband went on to share another 4 goals between them, the latter completing his hat trick to see us run out 7-1 winners and confirm our place in the quarter finals. The tie will take place on December 2nd, with the opponent yet to be announced.

The lads travelled to familiar foe Mayfield, after having two close games with them last season. This game would prove to be no different. Back in the squad was Moore, Withers, Gosling, Simpson, Tovell and Smith, out went Peverley and Muir. On a borderline playable, heavy pitch, it wasn’t a day for much passing and the home side took an early lead when a miss-hit corner caught everyone out and Mayfield’s big centre-forward was alert to poke home. Dynamos best chance of the first-half fell to Withers, who lobbed the on-rushing keeper, only to see his shot fall agonisingly wide. A stern half time team talk reminded the lads to keep it simple and get on the front foot. They duly obliged on the hour-mark, as Withers crossed from the right and Goodband finished well at the back stick. There only looked one winner now but then Dynamo undid the hard work by gifting Mayfield the lead again. Too many touches and over playing led to the home-side winger winner a tackle with Coxy and he tapped-home to an empty net. Time was now rapidly running out and it looked as though Dynamo would leave Ashbourne empty handed, but a ball into the box saw Mayfield fail to clear it and Supple smashed the ball home which looked like giving us a deserved point. There was still time for more late drama, as in the 6th minute of time added on Coxy drilled a free-kick to the back post where Bodill rose expertly to fire it back across goal and Skipper Allsop was on hand to prod home the winner. Cue wild celebrations from the away fans. Not a game to remember, but great resilience shown and 3 more points to the tally - which sees us break into the Top 6.

TODAY’S OPPONENTS

2 RIVAL FOOTBALL CLUBS BECOME 1 In the last 15 - 20 years of the Midland Regional Alliance, and more recently the Central Midlands League, Cromford FC and Wirksworth Town were direct rivals. At times, this rivalry was evenly contested and extremely fierce. However, amateur football is constantly changing and we must change with it in order to find the best way to become successful. Therefore, 2019 saw Cromford FC and Wirksworth Town combine forces to become one - Cromford & Wirksworth Town FC. The Cromford and Wirksworth area, given its size, is doing extremely well regarding the number of players it has available and the number of amateur teams it can support. We are proud to say that CWTFC, as part of the merger, are able to continue running 2 teams and provide the best standard of football for all of those involved.

We continue to strive to move onward and upwards within the Central Midlands League!

In Summer 2024, members of Melbourne Dynamo FC will be participating in the 3 Peaks Challenge, to raise funds for the club. If you would like to get involved, please contact chariman@melburnedynamo.co.uk.
