Project.

Executive Summary

Located in Kanyuambora, Embu, near the picturesque Kanyuambora Hill in Kenya, the proposed nursing school and hospital aims to establish a state-of-the-art educational and clinical facility on a approximately 5-acre site. This world-class institution will integrate advanced academic spaces with a fully functional hospital, providing approximately 500 nursing students with hands-on training in a serene and supportive environment. The design emphasizes functionality, sustainability, and aesthetic distinction, featuring modern classrooms, simulation labs, a comprehensive library, patient care areas, and extensive green spaces. By blending education and healthcare, the project seeks to create a seamless learning-to-practice transition, fostering excellence in nursing education and patient care.

Design concept.

1. Biophilic Design Principles Natural Light and Views: Natural light and views of nature reduce stress and enhance cognitive function. A study by the University of Oregon found that workers with views of nature experienced less absenteeism and greater satisfaction. Applying this to an academic setting, classrooms with large windows overlooking landscaped areas or Kenyuambora Hill can improve students’ mood and alertness.

Plants and Green Spaces: Incorporating indoor plants and outdoor gardens supports well-being. A study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology found that plants in workspaces improved productivity and reduced stress.

For the nursing school, green study lounges and interior greenery can foster a calming, focused atmosphere for students.

2. Restorative Environment Theory Nature Sounds and Water Features: A study by the Brighton and Sussex Medical School discovered that natural sounds, like flowing water or birdsong, activate parts of the brain associated with mindwandering and relaxation. Incorporating water features or audio of natural sounds in communal areas can create a restorative environment for students and patients alike.

Psychological Restoration: According to Kaplan and Kaplan’s Attention Restoration Theory (ART), exposure to nature restores mental focus by providing “soft fascination” (gentle, undemanding attention) that allows the brain to recover from fatigue. Outdoor courtyards, quiet green areas, and rooftop study decks can offer students opportunities to refresh between classes and clinical training.

3. Stress Reduction through Natural Elements Wood and Natural Materials: Studies show that natural materials, such as wood, reduce physiological stress responses. A 2010 study by the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that wooden interiors lower blood pressure and heart rate. Using wood finishes in study lounges, classrooms, and patient areas can help in creating a warm, inviting environment.

Visual Complexity and Patterns: Environments with moderate visual complexity (such as natural textures or patterns mimicking nature) stimulate curiosity and comfort without overwhelming the senses. Incorporating textures or patterns inspired by local flora, or elements from Kenyuambora Hill, can create an inviting and mentally stimulating space.

4. Healing Gardens and Outdoor Therapy Spaces Therapeutic Landscapes: Healing gardens are a valuable tool in healthcare design. Roger Ulrich’s study on the impact of nature views on hospital patients showed that those with views of trees had shorter postoperative stays and required less pain medication. A garden within the hospital section could serve as a therapy space for both students and patients, promoting faster healing and reduced stress.

Outdoor Classrooms and Study Spaces Outdoor classrooms support experiential learning and reduce anxiety. Research published in Frontiers in Psychology indicates that outdoor learning environments improve concentration, creativity, and reduce cortisol levels. By establishing outdoor study areas or rooftop decks, the nursing school can support varied learning experiences while connecting students to the local landscape.

5. Color Psychology in Learning and Healing Spaces Calming Color Palette: The colors used in the interior play a significant role in emotional responses.

Blues and greens, often associated with calmness and clarity, have been shown to reduce anxiety and improve focus.

Applying soft greens and blues in study areas and patient rooms can create an atmosphere conducive to both learning and relaxation.

Accent Colors for Stimulation: Warmer tones, such as yellow or light orange, can promote energy and engagement when used sparingly. Accent walls or furniture in shared areas can help balance calmness with an atmosphere of active learning and collaboration.

Medical waste will be securely stored in ventilated rooms, with proper disposal methods like incineration or sterilization. During the construction (WS5), there will be site supervision.

The following number of site visits and site meetings will be the minimum required. The consultancy fee for the site visits below is included in the WS5 fee above. The hourly rates listed below will only apply if additional visits beyond the minimum number of visits are required. Should more visits be required, prior permission/approval will be sought from the client a minimum of 14 days in advance.

As a provisional forecast, based on the programme above, we are able to commence work within a 1 week mobilization period, following signing of the contract and payment of the mobilization fee.

Please note that the construction programme can be drafted upon completion of the Designs, as the design and its phasing will inform the construction strategy.

The Numbers.

Fee For the successful completion of the project, the fees will be allocated as follows among the various teams: Architecture: 6% of the total project fee will be allocated to the architectural team, covering design development, space planning, detailing, and project coordination.

Civil and Structural Engineering: 2% will be allocated to the civil and structural engineering team for the design, planning, and supervision of the building’s structural integrity and site development.

Quantity Surveying (QS): 1.5% of the total fee will be allocated to the quantity surveying team, covering cost estimation, budgeting, and procurement management.

Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP): 2% will be allocated to the MEP team for the design and integration of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems within the building.

Please note; 1. Our fee for the Scope and Brief described in this proposal for Work-Stages 1-4 only is a lump sum and is exclusive of disbursements which will be charged for printing as per the schedule below.

Client pre-approval will be obtained for certain disbursements in accordance with the agreed terms.

Extra Details.

Fine Print.

We have summarized the following key terms, assumptions and exclusions upon which this proposal is based.

• Charges or levies for permitting and County approvals (e.g. building permit) are not priced for in this proposal and will be payable by the Client directly to the relevant County office • The client will provide a qualified representative to manage the contract from their side for the duration of the construction • Changes to the Scope of Work (Variation) which are instructed or approved by the Client and which result in additional work will incur appropriate additional fees; The client to approve any variation prior to implementation.

• All renders and drawings will include GGL’s logo and tag line • GGL can publicize the design on the website and in promotion material. You will be informed beforehand regarding any publication.

Disbursements / Reimbursable Expenses: • Printing, postage, any required mockups, will be reimbursable cost. The client will provide approval for these costs before incurring them and invoices and receipts will be presented for reimbursement purposes.

• Travel expenses as may be necessary to any shop, factory etc must be approved by the client first.
