We are proud to share 'The Power of Representation' magazine in celebration of our 5th year anniversary!

We have captured the stories of African and Caribbean Medical Students and Doctors in the United Kingdom.

Each at various stages in their medical careers, their journey's are unique to them. Depicting the highs, lows, similarities and differences; we hope to illuminate the experiences of black medics for you to be inspired, challenged and proud.

There's not many of us, so it's like we have the unspoken role of being a representative for Africans and Caribbeans who want to be in and already are in medicine. Our experiences are unique in both positive and negative ways from applying to medical school to even after graduating. In the end, there is a lot we overcome and that is why we are unique.

I am proud to come from such a vibrant culture. My background provides me the ability to have a different perspective as well as extra patience in comparison to my peers. I am also aware that I serve as a role model to many within my community, hence I often find ways to give back in anyway possible. In addition, I often combat stereotypes and ensure that other medics do not project their unrealistic (often biased) expectations towards me. I wouldn’t chose to be any other type of medic as I value all my efforts and achievements.

As a Black medic it can feel like there is a pressure to prove yourself, your knowledge and abilities to others. However, finding a community of other black medics with shared experiences inside and outside of the workplace can help ease this pressure.

"

I think we are in a unique stand point to address the health inequalities black people face, bringing our understanding of black experience to the table. We can be the voice for those in our communities who feel unheard and start by making a difference to our departments, hospitals and universities.

"

The challenges that we experience throughout our careers can make or break us and it can often feel isolating in institutions not centred or built on equality or diversity.

Having a support network of other black medics who can genuinely relate and offer advice is priceless.

"

Being a black medic gives you the unique reality of understanding what it means to be black. Although it sounds very simple, it means that as a black medic you can relate to the minute differences that black patients will express and using your unique understanding of their situation, provide them with a treatment plan and support, that is tailored to them not ignoring but respecting their differences. I truly hope that one day when I am a doctor that I will be able to be the kind that black patients will see and trust that I, as their caregiver will give them a care that factors in their differences and uniqueness as a black person and listens to their needs to provide them with a quality of care all patients, no matter their ethnicity, beliefs or circumstances, deserves.

Opportunity. As a black medic, I have an opportunity to make a difference. As a black medic I have an opportunity to represent. As a black medic, I have the opportunity to be recognised. Understanding that this doesn’t just impact me but also impacts future patients and peers looking towards or up to doctors, changes everything. With such a position, we have the gift to encourage, to build and to also inspire the next generation who are deemed minorities, to create and achieve something bigger for themselves. So what’s unique about been a black medic? The opportunity to direct, motivate and instigate change.

There is also fortunately or unfortunately some understanding that even though black people are not a monolith, people still believe that I am in some way representing people that look like me and this should present as excellence in the work that I do. This can often be pressure inducing at times to find the balance but also motivating at the same time.

Secondly, I think given the recent mass consciousness about the unique challenges that face black patients and doctors (not that Black people were not aware of this before!), it has felt quite very reassuring and hopeful knowing that as I gain more knowledge and skills, I can use that to help to begin to tackle some of those unique problems in the communities that I belong to.

Describe your Medicine journey My love for medicine is deep rooted to as far back as I can remember.

However, I was quickly discouraged after disclosing my childhood dream of becoming a Cardiologist to my year 7 teacher. I was met with ‘the world needs cleaners too’. Fast forward 3 degrees later and some much needed life experience, I finally built up the confidence to try again. I studied for the Gamsat (graduate entry exam) while teaching secondary school mathematics and secured a place in 2019. I am shocked how time has flown by.

I have had my fair share of negative experiences as a medical student studying in a less diverse region of the UK. It can be so easy to focus on these. Luckily, my initiative, has brought me wonderful opportunities. For example, due to an essay I had voluntarily submitted in late 2019, I was able to diversify aspects of the graduate medicine clinical skills teaching curriculum. I have now been contracted to contribute to a chapter regarding this work. I am blessed and thankful for moments such as these and I’m confident there are great days ahead.

Describe your Medicine journey I knew from a young age that I wanted to be a Doctor. Growing up in the hospital environment due to my brother having sickle cell anaemia, seeing the great care provided, made me also want to have this impact on the lives of other patients and their families.

I went to a state secondary school, did well in my GCSEs and partook in lots of extracurricular activities. Afterwards, I was encouraged to apply to a private sixth form even though there was no way to afford this. I successfully gained a 100% scholarship, rarely given, which I was truly grateful for. The 2 years spent there were eye-opening.

From the small group teaching to the intense medical school prep programme, it made me realise that there could also be other bright students who may be missing out on such opportunities. I successfully got into Med School at SGUL and had the best 6 years ever.
