tina valentino Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be. —Robert Browning, poet

60. They say not to live in the past but I can’t help it some days. Many days. Where does the time go? Seems like yesterday that I started my own business. The day before that I was standing at the light table at the Proviso Star-Sentinel newspaper office on Broadway in Melrose Park, pasting pages together. And the day before that I was breaking in a new pair of Bass Weejuns in the halls of Rosary College, scared and as stiff as my new shoes as I gazed out over the quad from quiet stairways. Buying jeans at Poppy’s on Harlem. Using fake IDs to get into disco clubs (where I spent long nights watching everyone’s purse because I never could master the Hustle or the Bus Stop). And just minutes before that I was fearless, riding the best bike in the world down 22nd as fast as I could to my grandparents’ house. Summers never so sweltering that a garden hose couldn’t fix it; winters never so cold that a hot baseboard couldn’t revive a pair of wet gloves. Birthdays bobbing for apples. All ancient history. In a blink. In a few weeks, I’ll hit a “milestone” and this particular birthday isn’t exactly one that makes me want to throw my hands up and shout like the Isley Brothers. Well maybe a little. But not in a good way. More like Maggie Kuhn who said, “Old age is an excellent time for outrage. My goal is to say or do at least one outrageous thing every week.” Turning 60 makes me want to throw the tantrum I never once threw as a kid—even though I have much for which to be very grateful. I never imagined, while I was striving to be a big entrepreneur, that I would grow old without owning a home, a pension or the corporate perk of profit sharing; that there would be no kids or grandkids to care for me or visit me in my rocking chair; that the poetry and pictures of my life are inevitably headed for a dumpster; that despite working in the trenches every day like everyone else, I am just old and rusty like my car. There won’t be a party. Maybe some BioFreeze and a visit to a few of my favorite “happy place” advertisers while I still have a driver’s license. In recent years, and particularly in recent months, I’ve witnessed the ravages of old age first hand and it is nothing short of devastating. The strongest and smartest, the most talented and most faithful, the kindest and gentlest among us can be stricken by the cruel and relentless loss of memory and physicality. My grandiose and unrealistic birthday wishes at this point in my life have evolved into simple prayers: for courage and patience at every stage of life but especially when mental and bodily brittleness take their toll on the people we love; and that people who choose caregiving professions—hello! Put some “care” back into your daily routine. On the flip side, Mitch Albom, who wrote Tuesdays with Morrie, makes a good point. “If you stayed at 22, you’d always be as ignorant as you were at 22. Aging is not just decay, you know. It’s more than the negative that you’re going to die, it’s also the positive that you understand that you’re going to die and that you live a better life because of it.” So here’s to 60, to maybe getting my first tattoo and maybe filling a big bucket and bobbing for apples just once more for the fun of it. With love and gratitude always to my mom, family, friends and neighbors,

MEET BERKELEY SISTERS KELLY SMOCK AND BRIDGET BAJKOWSKI

Two hometown heroes team up with Neighbors to help the men and women at Hines VA Hospital story by Tina Valentino

Kelly Smock’s father, the late Sgt. Steve Smock (4th Division Infantry, Special Forces LRPS/Black Beret), was a hometown hero when she was growing up in Broadview. He received many medals, including the Purple Heart for incredible courage and protecting the lives of every man in his unit.

Kelly Smock and Bridget Bajkowski have been doing extraordinary good deeds for years—and flying under the radar, until now. For the past six years, they have been collecting winter coats and distributing them to the neediest local organizations. Not just a few coats...last year, the sisters delivered more than 200 coats to Hesed Homeless Shelter in Aurora, warming the bodies and the hearts of both the staff and the less fortunate individuals who temporarily live there. For more than 10 years, the duo has sponsored/adopted low-income families from PAEC schools (which address the needs of special education students from ages 3 to 21), providing Christmas gifts for entire families living in Melrose Park, Bellwood, Hillside and Berkeley. This fall, the two are again on a mission: to ensure that the men and women served by Hines VA Hospital have all the socks, underwear, t-shirts and basic necessities they need. Neighbors Magazine partnered with Triton College’s RSVP Program, Veterans Park District and the Village of River Grove in 2016 to help stock the shelves, collecting over 3,000 items for local veterans. Now through the first week of November, Smock, Bajkowski and Neighbors Magazine, with support again from the Village of River Grove, Veterans Park District and Firehouse Subs Stone Park will “rally the troops” in the hope of another hugely-successful drive. “My sister is a trauma nurse at Loyola so she has always been compelled to help those in need; my father was a Viet Nam veteran so I feel very passionate about helping Hines veterans in his honor,” explains Smock. “And, we both have a mother who raised us to help others and to spread kindness whenever we could. We do it on our own by simple networking, calling friends and contacts we’ve made throughout our lives, reach out to fellow parishioners at St. Domitilla and co-workers.” Without corporate sponsors and media attention, Kelly and Bridget have impacted the lives of thousands of people— and with the community’s support, by Veterans Day 2019, countless local veterans, who put their lives on the line for a free nation, will have access to the things a grateful country should lavish upon them but does not. For more information on how you can help, send an email to KSmock9@aol.com, mel60160@aol.com or see page 24 of this issue for drop-off locations. Neighbors • 6

Triton continues Tree Campus USA initiative th swamp white oak planting last month

As part of Triton’s commitment to serving as a leader in urban forestry management, a swamp white oak tree was planted near the entrance of the Health and Sciences Building on September. 11. Members of Triton’s Greening the Campus Committee as well as other campus and community members attended a short remony, which also served as a remembrance of the events of September 11, 2001. A yearly tree planting is one of the requirements to maintain Tree Campus USA status. Triton was first granted the Tree Campus USA designation by the Arbor Day Foundation 2016. The swamp white oak is native to Chicagoland, featuring leaves with a twotone appearance. The tree will eventually grow to be 60-80 feet tall. “It is a tough, hearty, long-lived tree that will help restore our ecosystem and will provide shelter and food for birds and other creatures—and shade for humans,” Triton College Sustainability Coordinator Adrian Fisher said. “It is fitting that we plant a tree like this on this day. It is truly symbolic of the strength and resilience of all the people who have and will continue to help make our nation one in which everyone, we all, can flourish.”
