Greatness.
You have to make your own luck sometimes, make things happen. Being in the right place at the right time helps. And heed the good advice you get. To this day, I can’t help but keep thinking that I never dreamed that the skinny kid, pummeled and always at the bottom of the heap could be this fortunate. John Lattner, our interview in May 2000
It seems like yesterday when I sat down with Johnny Lattner at his office in Broadview for a long interview made possible by one of his favorite Fenwick football teammates, former Melrose Park Mayor C. August Taddeo. I was nervous; he was ridiculously calm. It wasn’t until the end of our conversation that my anxiety skyrocketed. I told him about my cousin Joe Montino, a die-hard Notre Dame fan. Johnny picked up the heavy case that housed the Heisman Trophy, handed it to me and said, “Take it home, show Joe, show anyone you want. Bring it back when you’re done. And don’t forget, you’re invited to our family get-togethers.” That’s my cousin Joe in the photo with the Heisman on the kitchen counter. When Lattner passed away last month on February 13th—in the midst of headline-hogging political primaries and Kanye West’s $53 million dollar debt—his inspiring life barely made local news. The least I could do to honor this hometown hero who lived out his days in Melrose Park is offer an excerpt from my May 2000 story titled Better Lattner Than Ever: After you’ve had breakfast with a real champion, no cereal on earth can compare, and the rest of the day—and most of the days that follow—are really rather anti-climactic. Spending the better part of a Friday morning talking one-on-one with Johnny Lattner (our only interruption being the deafening silence that accompanied the unpacking of his coveted Heisman Trophy) was an experience that lasted in length about as long as an average graduation ceremony; however, a few minutes with Lattner would make most commencement speakers toss out even their most potentially-motivating addresses. Why? Not because Johnny Lattner is such a great speaker. Notre Dame’s famous running back would gladly take to the field in front of a packed stadium of screaming fans than make a statement before an auditorium of attentive listeners. So what is it about Lattner that makes him even more notable today than in his heyday of the 1950s? Perhaps it is the way he has tackled the obstacles in his life, his perseverance, his devotion to family and education and a red-faced humility that makes him more endearing to fans and friends today than ever before. Growing up in a four-room apartment on the city’s west side, Lattner’s father had no job during the Depression. While he took his licks on the city’s streets, he found some refuge on the basketball team in grammar school. “Once sports took a hold of me, things began to change,” said Lattner. Academically, Lattner was resigned to the fact that he would spend his high school days seated alphabetically behind Richard LaPata of Melrose Park and even Lattner’s best efforts couldn’t exceed LaPata’s. “Lattner. LaPata. For four years I had to sit behind him.” But for all of his honors, accolades and autographs, the team Lattner holds closest to his heart is his family. “My wife Peggy is the real hero in the Lattner story. She raised eight kids while I was trying to conquer the world. There’s no ifs, ands or buts about it, she’s my hero.” And for those who idolize Lattner strictly for his football stats, he would rather they appreciate him for his pursuit of an education. “If I could say anything to kids today, I would tell them to continue their education.” Father Richard LaPata, who went on to become President of Fenwick High School, celebrated the funeral Mass at St. Vincent Ferrer in River Forest just as Lattner had requested. “It was his generous spirit that raised others instead of himself,” LaPata reflected. Lattner’s legacy reminds us all that it is never to late to get off the bench, get in the game and be the best champion of humility that we can be. Happy Easter season...

LEAN ON ME giving has no boundaries
From stocking food pantry shelves to helping total strangers, they put “unity” back into community By Tina Valentino and Tom Brimie
R
esidents of the Leyden Township area in need of support have been turning to The Unity in Community Foundation for help—and they have not been disappointed. What started out in 2009 as a group of folks raising funds to support local food pantries, took a giant leap when a former Leyden High School teacher, Dominic Manola, asked if they would be willing to organize a fundraiser for a student, Lucia Ramirez, who was battling a serious medical condition. Franklin Park residents Tom Brimie and Rose Rodriguez accepted the challenge, recruiting friends to assist them with the effort. In November 2011, a hugely successful fundraiser brought together civic and charitable organizations, business owners, elected officials, students and caring individuals. David Guerin, an unsung local philanthropist and the owner of The Underpass Restaurant & Lounge, 9400 Grand Avenue in Franklin Park, hosted the event. Inspired by Lucia Ramirez, a total stranger, common bonds were forged. Brimie and Rodriguez went on to establish The Unity in Community Foundation, a 501c3 organization, with the sole purpose of putting UNITY back into community, particularly for those who reside within the borders of Leyden Township which includes Elmwood Park, Franklin Park, Northlake, River Grove, Rosemont, Schiller Park and unincorporated Leyden Township. Board members now also include Lucia Ramirez, Donna Brimie, Jill Stocks and Ron Schammert. The Foundation receives requests mainly through its website at https://theunityincommunity.org and most of the submissions are pleas from residents who want to somehow help out their struggling neighbors. Recently, Foundation co-founder and Board member Tom Brimie said that a resident from Franklin Park contacted the Foundation through its “Community Wishes” program and told them about a single mom who had undergone a double mastectomy and couldn’t get back to work as planned. Brimie said, “The Foundation didn’t hesitate for a minute to jump into action immediately to help.” The resident who submitted the “Wish” promptly contacted the Foundation again—this time with an overwhelming message of gratitude. “What you do for the people of our community is just incredible, “ she wrote. “I was amazed at how quickly you guys responded! I can’t tell you how grateful this young woman was that you had offered to pay some of her bills.” The Foundation also found out about a resident whose van was stolen; police found the van but the thieves had removed the ignition switch. Family-owned Hagen’s Automotive Service, 2315 Mannheim Road in Melrose Park, learning that the resident had little resources, replaced the ignition switch at no charge— paid only in tears and tremendous appreciation. “God bless everyone involved in making this happen for me. You are all awesome people,” said the van’s owner. The good works of the Foundation are being noticed. Foundation Board members were recently contacted by State Rep. Camille Lilly (center in the photo above taken at Lulu Belle’s Pancake House in Franklin Park) who wanted to personally thank Brimie (at left) and fellow Board member Ron Schammert and learn more about what she could do to help; Lilly’s 78th District includes Franklin Park, River Grove, Elmwood Park and Oak Park. Nuns running in marathon seek local support to fund programs
The Sisters of the Mission of Our Lady of the Angels (featured in last month’s issue of Neighbors magazine), the outreach of the Franciscans of the Eucharist, provide hope to the poor on the west side of Chicago through food pantries, after-school programs, senior programs, community meals and much more. Several of the Sisters comprise Team OLA and will be running in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and Oak Brook’s Half Marathon in September. “We are inviting anyone interested in running to contact us as soon as possible. The marathon and half marathon teams (Team OLA) are really essential to keeping the Mission going as these are our largest fundraisers of the year,” explained Sr. Stephanie Baliga, a 2:53 marathoner, NCAA D1 cross-country and track athlete. Deadline to sign up for the Bank of America marathon is April 12 but entries are limited so interested runners should email Sr. Stephanie at olamission@gmail.com or call 773-486-8431 as soon as possible. Benefits of joining either team include: T-shirts, pre-race Mass and dinner, a place to stay the night before the race as well as your own personal “prayer warrior.” For more information about the Mission, running or sponsoring the events, visit the website at www.missionola.com/marathon.html.

“When State Rep. Lilly contacted us, we were thrilled,” said Brimie. “She offered to promote the Foundation on her website and assist us with finding corporate sponsors who shared our vision. We truly appreciate the time she spent learning more about us and look forward to working with her in the future.” Because the Foundation has its finger on the pulse of the community, there is no red tape or administrative waste, small and large local businesses were quick to become corporate sponsors because they knew for certain that their partners were truly granting wishes and not helping themselves to perks. Leyden Credit Union, Haggerty Auto Group, Sloan Valve, Christopher B. Burke Engineering, The Underpass Restaurant and Lounge, Harpo’s VIP Auto Parts Warehouse, the Lions Club of River Grove, Hagen’s Automotive, Windy City Limousine, Gene & Georgetti of Rosemont, Rosemont Exposition Services, Larry’s Plumbing, H&H Electric, Gianni’s Ristorante & Pizzeria, Nelsen Steel Company, Sax-Tiedmann Funeral Home, Grand Stand Pizza, Blondie’s Diner, along with mayors, attorneys and an FOP Lodge are only a few who have pledged their support to sustain the annual Pre-Holiday Celebration and Food Drive every Fall, six scholarships annually and Community Wishes. Individual donations also ensure that wishes get fulfilled. “There are several ways to get involved. First, we encourage people to visit our website and learn about our programs and events; attend our annual fundraiser in September; and feel free to contact one of the board members to discuss helping with food pantry donations or tax-deductible, monetary donations or corporate sponsorship. The website also offers a safe and convenient Paypal option for making donations 24/7. For those who prefer the good, old-fashioned way, anyone can mail a donation to The Unity in Community Foundation, 3019 Emerson Street, Franklin Park, IL 60131,” explained Brimie. “It’s been five years already since we formed the Foundation and we remain inspired by Lucia. We thank her and everyone who makes it possible for us to make a difference in our corner of the world.” Pictured above, the Board of Directors: (front row from left) Rosalba Rodriguez, Lucia Ramirez, Donna Brimie, (back row from left) Ron Schammert, Jill Stocks and Tom Brimie.

A POWERFUL COMMITMENT Few things withstand the test of time like a solid relationship. At Raymond James, we take great pride in the fact that the recommendations of our clients are our primary source of new business. Weeklong series of events planned for May Entering its sixth year, members of the Celebrating Seniors Coalition gathered last week to raise awareness about the week-long series of events coming up in May throughout Oak Park, River Forest and Forest Park. More than 20 people convened at the Howard Mohr Community Center, 7640 Jackson Blvd. in Forest Park, for the Celebrating Seniors Stakeholders’ Summit. Composed of representatives from local universities, government, parks, the police, hospitals, social service agencies, the business sector and more, the group learned more about the organization’s past successes as well as its vision for the future. The get-together last month also served as a call for nominees to be honored as part of the not-for-profit group’s “60 Over 60” ceremony, as well as an invitation for people to submit ideas for programming. In his remarks, Celebrating Seniors Coalition Chairman Jim Flanagan emphasized the organization’s purpose: to highlight the significant contributions older adults make to our community and our way of life. “Seniors have played and continue to play significant roles in our communities,” Flanagan added. “Looking out for them is the least we can do—they deserve our respect, appreciation and protection.” Dubbed Celebrating Seniors Week, May 13th through 19th will feature dozens of events ranging from educational seminars to rollicking entertainment. One of the marquee events that debuted during last year’s Celebrating Seniors Week and is slated to return: Calling All Collectors. Flanagan, chairman of the Oak Park/River Forest Township Senior Services Committee, founded the Celebrating Seniors Coalition in 2010. The not-for-profit organization draws from individuals, businesses, congregations, government agencies and other individuals and organizations that serve seniors. Celebrating Seniors has four main objectives: to provide financial support for seniors in need, to facilitate cooperation between the business community, government agencies and non-profit organizations for the benefit of the senior population; to promote senior groups and organizations that serve persons 60 and older; and to raise public awareness of issues affecting seniors. The deadline for submitting ideas for events during the week is March 1st. Sandra Rowe, who chairs the events committee, invited anyone with a creative idea to complete an application for holding an event. To obtain an application, email Rowe at sandra.j.rowe@gmail.com. For more information about the Celebrating Seniors Coalition, please visit www.CelebratingSeniors.net or Facebook/Twitter.

Emanuel “Chris” Welch, The Torchbearers Foundation and the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. are sponsoring an Aristocrats Youth Mentoring Program at the Maywood Public Library, 121 S. 5th Avenue, Maywood one Saturday each month through May. The program is designed to bring awareness to various aspects of life to at-risk youth. Upcoming dates are: March 19, Teen Pregnancy & STD Protection; Saturday, April 16, Establishing Career Goals; Saturday, May 21, End of School Year Wrap-Up Session. Rep. Camille Lilly encourages Illinois motorists to sign up for vehicle registration e-mail notices
With many motorists finding themselves on the receiving end of a ticket for expired vehicle registrations, State Rep. Camille Lilly is reminding residents that the Illinois Secretary of State’s office is offering free electronic reminder notices to help avoid getting slapped with a fine or late fee since they will no longer be mailing out license renewal reminders to drivers. “Signing up for the email reminders is a helpful way to ensure people protect themselves from getting a ticket,” Lilly said. In lieu of the mail notification, motorists are asked to sign up for an email reminder by visiting www.ilsos.gov/greenmail/. People will need their PIN and ID numbers, which are located on their registration cards. Should you have any difficulty signing up online, people are welcome to call 800-252-8980 for assistance. As expected, renewal stickers, titles and license plates will still be mailed out as normal by the Secretary of State and the services available at permanent facilities throughout the state will also continue. Lilly is also sponsoring legislation to provide motorists with an extra 30 days to get their new vehicle registration without being subject to fines, late fees or tickets. “ I recently signed up for this tool myself and I find it to be an easier and more efficient method than receiving mail, which will save taxpayers in the long run,” Lilly said. “As I am committed to helping connect families with alternative resources to lessen their economic burden, the website offered by the Secretary of State is a worthy connection to have.” Lilly represents the 78 District which includes parts of Chicago, Elmwood Park, Melrose Park, Franklin Park, Oak Park and River Grove. To contact her District office, call 773-473-7300 or send an email to StateRepCamilleYLilly@gmail.com.
Harmon: Champion of Democracy
Senator Don Harmon was presented with the 2016 Champion of Democracy award from Common Cause Illinois last month. Harmon was recognized on behalf of early childhood education, government oversight and ethics and expanded voting access. Common Cause noted Harmon’s efforts to bring same-day voter registration to Illinois as well as online voter registration and an expanded early voting period. Harmon thanked Common Cause for the honor, noting that while he is flattered and humbled to be singled out, he is happy to share the recognition with all of the people who have a hand in the initiatives he’s championed. “It is so important that we make government more accountable, more transparent and—I think most importantly—less responsive to big money,” said Harmon.

What’s a Phablet? A Phablet is a large screen smartphone with many of the capabilities of a tablet. The normal size of a tablet is nice but a bit bulky to carry around and the traditional 4” screen of a smartphone can be hard on the eyes for reading. Phablets give bigger screens, decent memory, camera with nice pixel quality and more while still fitting in a purse or large size suit pockets.
