Raise your hand. Looking back at the past five months, it’s pretty clear that the pandemic has taken its toll on everyone. At the onset, it was frontline healthcare workers—doctors, nurses, CNAs, even housekeeping staffs—as well as first responders who were being hit the hardest and, of course, they are still at risk. Then, as states began to shut down, it was the business community that began to crumble under the pressure of a shelter-in-place—not so much the big dual-drive-thru franchises on every corner but the coffee shops, pizzerias, burger joints, bakeries and delis that sweated it out every day, wondering if they could actually survive on curbside pickup and Grubhub. Village governments are operating with less sales tax revenue while waiving late fees and water shut-offs; park districts were forced to refund enrollment fees and suspend any attempt at recreation. All that was left for us was grocery shopping during designated times, with our masks on, following ridiculous arrows through the stores...and walking. I’ve never seen so many dogs get walked!

And though the end of the last school year ended abruptly and students of all ages were cheated out of proms and graduations, caps and gowns, class trips and fond farewells to the friends that they’ve made the journey with, everyone seemed to muddle and manage, anticipating normalcy by fall and a new academic year. It’s September, we’re all still walking on eggshells and the next sector of society to be punished by the pandemic is kids. All of our lives we’ve taken going to school for granted: whether you loved it or hated it (or cried like I did), starting school was an annual ritual that required orientations, shopping for clothes (or uniforms, if you’re a Catholic school alum like me) and supplies and dorm furniture, physicals and a dreaded new bedtime. New teachers, new friends, new adventures were on the horizon in the classroom, at recess, in the extracurricular athletics or fine arts opportunities that give every student a chance to dig within. Not this year. When I was a kid, being forced to stand in the corner was a common punishment. That’s what some of the pictures on Facebook look like to me now—little tables set up to be desks or workstations in the corner of some room in the house (if they’re lucky and they have parents who actually care) where the kids can sit alone on their laptops to tackle their e-learning assignments without even having to wash their faces, brush their teeth or get dressed.

I’m well aware that it’s not the worst thing but somehow it is incredibly sad to me, in a world that is already conflicted at every level, playgrounds will be eerily quiet, no laughing kids swinging from monkey bars or locking their bikes in rack, no crossing guards holding up traffic; college campuses will be equally desolate without packed stadiums and tailgating, theatrical performances and a non-existent dorm experience, thanks to online instruction.

We’ve been checking on our older neighbors, on our high-risk elderly but I’m thinking we need to keep a closer eye on children who are deeply saddened by the loneliness and isolation. We think of them as so resilient, busy on their tablets and Xboxes, but that’s no substitute for socialization. In this issue, as always, there are options and resources. There are still nearby, free or affordable ways to be out and be safe, whether it is at drive-in Mass and Trailside Museum in River Forest, car bingo in North Riverside, Veterans Park District and library programs, We Rock the Spectrum in Franklin Park or starting a food drive for Westchester Food Pantry. Dig within. Good ideas will bubble up.

When a man from New Jersey named Richard Hollingshead opened the first drivein theater in 1933, he could have never imagined that the concept would be strangely reinvented in 2020. The many restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, including an extended shelter-inplace, have taken a stressful toll on people of all ages. For many Catholics, daily prayer, weekly Mass, receiving the sacraments and saying the rosary are a way of life. When faced with the fear and even grief of a global crisis, the church can be a beacon of hope—unless the doors are locked by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for the greater good.

Fr. Raymond Bryce, OP, parochial vicar at St. Vincent Ferrer, 1530 Jackson in River Forest, began reading even more voraciously over the past several months, hoping to learn what other archdioceses were doing across the country to connect with congregations during the crisis. Conflicting information

and protocols across the country made worship impossible and confusing—how is it that church services must be suspended but a barbecue, limited to 50 with masks and social distance, falls within the parameters of “safe?” “We are a cross section of the nation,” reflected Fr. Raymond. “The demographics of St. Vincent parish ranges from young parents with infants to high school students to active seniors to more frail elderly individuals whose confusion has been worsened by the media. Some wonder why wear masks at all, others reason that it’s better to be safe than sorry and still others who are high-risk are deathly afraid and won’t even consider coming to church even as the new phases have rolled out.”

When Fr. Raymond came upon an article in First Things magazine entitled “The Case for Drive-In Masses,” written by a fellow Dominican priest, Gregory Pine, OP, based in Washington, DC, he knew almost immediately that one of his many prayers had been answered. “Ideally, the sacred space of a church is best for bringing people together for Mass, to pray, to sing but in unprecedented times it is the “praying together” element that is accomplished through the innovation of our new drive-in Mass.” After much deliberation and training, some practice and very little expense, St. Vincent Ferrer launched its first drive-in Mass on Sunday, July 12. With the purchase of a small radio transmitter the size of an iPod that transmits on radio frequencies, Mass had moved to the sprawling parking lot and, by simply adjusting the radio dial to 88.3 FM, the priest and parishioners are finally together again. “At long last, peop le can 1) come to Mass, 2) come to Mass together, 3) stay in the car to ensure their safety. In this way, we are all present to the experience,” said Fr. Raymond gratefully. A small group of well-trained and masked volunteers assist the face shieldwearing priest, distributing hand sanitizer to Communicants as they navigate from car window to car window. “Even though we’ve moved the Mass outdoors, we continue to follow the strictest guidelines,” he added. “We are taking great joy in the small successes in a stressful time.”

Others are taking great joy in this innovative idea as well.

Fr. Raymond has received many happy calls and emails from the faithful who not only appreciate the parish’s work to create a safe environment for celebrating Mass but who are also just really impressed with the extra efforts. River Forest resident and parishioner Donna Fantetti-Slepicka, owner of River Forest Chocolates, is thrilled with the concept. “The drive up s ervice is lovely,” Donna told Neighbors magazine. “It allows all to reflect privately and comfortably during these uncertain times. The

audio through your car radio works perfectly. It is such an inspiring, hopeful and gratifying opportunity to be able to worship once again.”

Fr. Raymond gives abundant credit to the volunteers who helped make the transition possible. “We owe a huge thanks to a really dedicated group of volunteers who have gone through extensive training aside from their jobs and their lives to ensure safe seating when we are in church, flow in the worship space and in the parking lot.”

Current Mass schedule is: Sunday Drive-In, 7:30 am Monday-Friday Drive-In, 6:45 am Saturday, Drive-In, 8 am Sunday In Church, 11 am (also Livestreamed) Sunday In Church, 5:30 pm Saturday Confession, 3-4 pm (and by appointment) In addition to the Masses, Fr. Raymond invites area residents to join those who pray the rosary on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm. “All are welcome pray the rosary for an end to the pandemic and for your own intentions. We meet at our Lady’s statue located at the southwest corner of the school.”

All three priests, Fr. Simon-Felix, Fr. Steven Kuhlmann and Fr. Raymond, together with staff and the parish council have dedicated their days to calling all parishioners in the database during these trying times to not only check on their well-being, particularly the elderly, but to stay connected and let them know about the developments being made. “Not everyone has access to the internet, not everyone has time to scroll through Facebook,” Fr. Raymond explained. “All of our lives have changed dramatically but we will forge on together in faith. All of us continue to just put one foot in front of the other.”

Now, with COVID-19 protocols in place, kids of all abilities can play with a purpose and learn safely. The western suburbs are home to many exceptional park districts and some offer or partner with special recreation opportunities but sometimes that’s just not enough and parents need more options when it comes to providing their children with supervised and productive play.

Thanh Lam (“Joy”), the mother of two boys ages 6 and 4, worked in an Anatomical Pathology Laboratory prior to venturing into owning a We Rock the Spectrum Kid’s Gym (WRTS). Excited to open in March and welcome children ages six months to age 10 (disabled children K-5), the facility was abruptly closed like most other businesses in the state due to the pandemic. Today the doors are not only open again at low capacity but WRTS has expanded its offerings to assist stressed parents with elearning.

The gym is packed with specialized equipment, sensory based toys, arts and crafts area and programs that are set up for kids of all ability levels and are designed and perfected to help all children grow, develop and, of course, have some fun.

On any given day, kids will challenge themselves on the zip line for stress release

and joint/body relaxation, trampoline for building leg and core strength, swings for balance and vestibular treatment, indoor play structure for climbing and increasing playground skills, toys aimed at improving auditory processing and fine motor skills and the crafts area that focuses on improved hand-eye coordination. The gym is also available for private rentals and parties and the Rock Shop offers parents the best selection of hand-picked sensory-based toys and puzzles for purchase.

“We strive daily to continue to carry out our mission of being a safe haven and a place where you never have to say I’m sorry,” says Joy, who is proud to also say that kids won’t have to apologize for not having their schoolwork done. Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 2:30 pm, parents can drop off the kids with their iPad, computer, headphone and assignments. The WRTS school day includes sensory breaks and active play time. There is limited availability for this program; cost is $225 per child per week or $50 per child/day if parents choose two or three day options.

Memorial Park District will host a Pickleball Tournament on Sunday, September 20 from 1 to 4 pm at Sharp Park, 1609 36th Avenue in Melrose Park. Pickleball is a paddleball sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis.

Join the fun in this round robin (scramble) format with eight players in each bracket. No partners necessary and no tournament experience necessary.

Celebrating life, Continuing a legacy

In 1975, Richard Rose of Maywood was called to ministry at Walther Lutheran High School in Melrose Park, where he passionately served for 40 years in a wide range of capacities fitting his varied gifts, including: grade school band director, high school band director, jazz band director, religion, accounting, and special education teacher, assistant basketball coach, drama producer, architect, builder, painter, lighting director, janitor, and even, at one time, poms coach. No task that needed to be accomplished was too great or small. He did whatever it took to give his students the opportunity to realize their God-given talents to the best of their ability.

Richard passed away on August 23 at age 69 but his legacy moves forward through thousands of children who grew in their own faith as they learned to serve through their Godgiven talents. From the Walther Grade School Instrumental Pr ogram, which he founded in 1975, to teaching at Walther, to mentoring students, Richard Rose did not accept mediocrity or someone’s half-best. He pushed those around him to perform at the level he knew they could achieve, not just what they accepted for themselves. Richard made an effort every day to love the broken back to life, care for the sick and needy, and provide for his neighbor before even considering the cost to himself. Because of Richard Rose and his lasting impact, there are several generations who now know what it means to love God, love people, and make their own impact on this world.

Richard requested gifts be made to continue the legacy of the Walther Fine Arts Department. To honor this request, the Richard Rose Memorial Fund has been established at Walther, with a particular focus on the Walther Grade School Instrumental Program. A celebration of his lif e is planned for Saturday, September 12 on Walther’s Fran Fanelli Jr. Football Field at 9th and Chicago Avenue in Melrose Park starting at 5:30 pm. In case of inclement weather: Sunday, September 13 at 5:30 pm.

Richard is survived by his wife, Kathleen; children, Samantha and Frederick II (Melissa); grandchildren Maxwell and Liam; sisters Sharon and Karen.

To help the Westchester Food Pantry

July was a record month for the Westchester Food Pantry, (WFP) which served 377 households totaling 1,365 individuals in Bellwood, Berkeley, Broadview, Hillside, Hines, LaGrange Park, Westchester and Western Springs. Statistics from August, once tallied, will also show record numbers. But because the Pantry is busier than ever, it needs more help than ever.

Volunteer to help serve clients or help with a fundraiser.

Donate food or funds or organize a food drive. The WFP motto: Neighbors helping neighbors. Together we can make a difference. Below are some of the top ways you can make a difference.

Volunteer in September/October. Volunteer shifts are open for September and October so volunteer as your schedule allows. Sign up at www.westchesterfoodpantry.org.

Donate food. With more and more people coming for help each week, it is difficult to keep the shelves stocked. Donations of ma caroni and cheese, pasta, pasta sauce, cereal, soup, oatmeal, peanut butter, jelly, Ramen packages, snacks (crackers, granola bars, goldfish, etc.), canned meat, canned beans and even pet food are always appreciated. Find more suggestions on the website; even paper bags with handles are needed.

Donation bins are located at seven sites: Westchester Park District (2), Historic Prairie House in Westchester, Berkeley Village Hall and Library, LaGrange Park Library an d the Westchester Village Hall lobby, 10300 Roosevelt.

Organize a food drive. Your place of work, your block, community groups, scout troops, schools that are open, places of worship and more are all good places to launch a food drive.

Need help? Send WFP an email or call 708/927-4826 and they will gladly help get you started.

Be a food reclamation volunteer. Every Friday from 11 am to 1 pm, volunteers go to pre-designated stores to reclaim food. This is food that is no longer sellable but perfectly edible.

Volunteers must have their own vehicle (bigger is often better) and be able to lift food from carts into their vehicles. For food reclamation volunteers, WFP asks that volunteers commit to one Friday each month. Call or send an email through the website.

Triton College held its third annual Backpack Give Back Event last month. A collaborative effort with West40 ISC #2, and supported by college faculty and staff, free backpacks filled with school supplies were given away to area families.

“This is the third year we have hosted Backpack Give Back, but this year is so important as many of our local families’ were impacted by the coronavirus pandemic,” said Audrey Jonas, Director, Public Affairs and Community Relations.

“There are many different ways the college continues to be a resource for our community, and we’re pleased to be able to assist with access to much needed school supplies.”

The coronavirus pandemic also impacted how the backpacks were distributed. This year’s event was converted into a “drive-through,” where attendees were able to receive backpacks without leaving their vehicles, ensuring physically distanced interacti on. Attendees without vehicles were also served in a socially distanced mask-enforced walk-up line.

“I’m pleased that we were able to take an innovative approach to serve our students and community members,” said Mary-Rita Moore, Triton College President. “We all are adjusting with some changes to offer community events, such as Backpack Give Back, that enable the college to continue to assist our community members much like we’ve done in the past.”

Given the shift to rem ote and hybrid learning, Triton’s educational partners overwhelmingly requested headphones to facilitate at-home learning via laptops and other devices. In addition to headphones, notebooks, pens, pencils and other essential school supplies were included in the backpacks.

The college exceeded its plan to distribute 1,000 backpacks, providing 1,400 backpacks to community families.
