New Normal. I certainly don’t consider myself a wordsmith, even though I’ve made a meager living off of the written word for over 30 years. Some words, when you hear them, are just like nails on a blackboard. For me, the expressions “new normal” and “social distancing” fall into that despised category. I’m not a media mogul, medical professional or a politician but I am growing very weary (disgusted actually) with all three groups for their part in the total desecration of just about everything that is sacred to us: our faith, families and friends and even our chosen professions.

I was always a “dork,” as my first friend in kindergarten still refers to me. I never cut class, never skitched in the winter snow, never got a detention, almost always raised my hand, did extra credit and basically followed most of the rules through school—and life. At the onset of this pandemic, I completely understood and appreciated the “order” that we should all exercise extreme caution to avoid spreading this merciless virus. Armed with a box of gloves, an assortment of masks, various sanitizers, bleaches and sprays, like millions of Americans I followed the rules verbatim, just short of wearing a haz-mat suit, to avoid the physical dangers lurking around every doorknob. What pains me most now, after almost three months of isolation, are the collective mental, emotional and sociological dangers we face. We have been stripped of the “essentials” in our lives that can’t be found in the one-way aisle at the grocery store. At the very least, everyone of us has been deprived of the many documented health benefits of a simple hug. We’ve been robbed of cuddling new babies, embracing our grieving friends, celebrating much-anticipated graduations, weddings and concerts, dinners and reunions, flea markets, stress-free beach vacations and cherished holiday traditions. Children have been cheated out of silly playdates and birthday parties, the friendships forged over sleepovers and recess and summer amusement park thrills. Playgrounds and pools are cordoned off by official orders. Last but not least, no doubt our prayers are just as powerful in private as they are in a church, pagoda, mosque, temple or synagogue but gathering as a flock of faithful to sing, profess and seek spiritual guidance or forgiveness is as old as Moses. Coming together gives us strength and consolation and inspiration. All of these voids combined can only lead to intense sadness and desperation piled on top of the existing fear and looming financial distress.

I am getting to know that feeling of desperation all too well. When someone you love is in lockdown in a nursing home, a group home or hospital, for example, with no end in sight, the long lonely days crush everyone’s spirit—patients and families. Liquor stores and golf courses are allowed to be open and outdoor dining is now permitted—but our loved ones are off limits?

I have no profound insight to share except for the words posted on the door of St. Paul Resale in Melrose Park that I noticed while writing the story for this issue: Store temporarily closed due to ongoing concerns about the spread of the coronavirus...stay healthy, wash your hands, and most importantly: PRAY. Keep living, neighbors, and keep humming in the darkness.

With no donations coming in and no customers allowed in the store for over two months, St. Paul Resale in Melrose Park launched a curbside pickup project of its own while waiting for the state’s approval to open the doors on June 1st.

M

arlene Mussatti (pictured above), manager of St. Paul Resale, located at 1025 Lake Street in Melrose Park, knows a thing or two about the resale business—what started out as a way to make some much-needed extra cash as a young single mom turned into over 30 years of priceless experience. She took big risks opening up a tiny storefront of her own when she lived in Florida, risks that paid off in valuable experience and decades of gratifying work in the resale business.

Upon returning to her “roots” in the Bellwood-Hillside area, she was a frequent customer at the Bronco Thrift Shop, which was originally located in Maywood for 30 years then relocated to Berkeley for 8 years. Marlene and the store’s manager became friends and as luck—or providence—would have it, Marlene was looking for work at the exact same time that the store manager was about to hand in her two weeks’ notice. Marlene was hired.

Next month, St. Paul Resale will mark its two-year anniversary in Melrose Park, fully utilizing the enormous space left vacant when St. Paul Lutheran elementary school closed. The sales floor alone occupies the equivalent of over seven classrooms— all filled and masterfully organized with new and gently-

used merchandise—from home and garden, sporting goods, children’s clothing and toys, household appliances and decor, men’s and women’s clothing, books, furniture and, on occasion, spectacular antique items. Under the direction of project manager Jim Craven, former principal at Walther Christian Academy, St. Paul Resale was a “leap of faith for the congregation” that still fully supports the enterprise. “Because the congregation is 100% behind the store and I am 100% behind Marlene, we’re going to make it through these difficult times. In fact, I believe a store like ours will grow because many people are already experiencing financial difficulties. Our quality inventory and fair prices can help many people and families get what they need on a budget.” In fact, St. Paul Resale is a godsend to countless people near and far—not just to those searching for bargains.

Jim Craven explained that 100% of all Resale store proceeds are used for exceptionally good causes, such as Lutheran Church Charities’ internationally-known K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry as well LCC disaster and crisis response efforts; proceeds also support Lutheran Child and Family Services and Resale inventory helps provide foster and adoptive families with clothes and other essentials; the Salvation Army benefits from surplus Resale inventory; and a new partnership with the Franklin Park American Legion Post connects veterans with vouchers so local heroes can have access to essentials such as shoes, coats and clothes for work. Most recently, a gift of $10,000 was given to Walther Academy in March specifically to assist families with tuition payments as the pandemic was just beginning to force people out of their jobs. Last year alone, more than $34,000 was distributed to various charities.

Despite the fact that the Resale store was forced to close during the state mandate, a skeleton crew of volunteers forged on, donning masks and rolling up sleeves, using the “sabbatical” as an opportunity to not only pack up winter/spring displays but to launch a curbside pickup project of their own. Each week, Marlene used the store’s Facebook page to post photos every Monday of a select group of items— from a trio of puzzles, a bag of books, a collection of family games or a load of Legos—anything that might help keep folks busy during the shelter. Other posted items included a midcentury three-piece bedroom set, a china cabinet and a table with four chairs. “We hoped that this experiment would work out well and that we could stay connected with the community at the same time. Further, if anyone was desperate for a particular item, we asked them to comment on a post and we would make every effort to accommodate that request. All items

had a cash-only Friday pickup and we were amazed at the responses we received,” said Marlene. “It really was a great success despite the difficult situation we were all facing.”

As the store prepares to reopen, Marlene has started using the Facebook page to educate those who have been decluttering. “We know that people have been saving items for us but we’re not quite ready to take donations yet. In the meantime, we are asking those who are eager to donate to keep these things in mind: 1) make sure all items have been washed or cleaned and are in good condition; 2) separate clothing from everything else and attempt to sort/label (adult, children, winter, summer) because it will help facilitate what we do; send donations in boxes, bags or totes that can be left with us as asking for your tote back during the drop-off will definitely slow things down. Boxes with lids/flaps that can be stacked are ideal.” Lastly, Marlene warns against an impulse drop. “Please don’t leave donations at the store door because those donations will be thrown directly into the dumpster.

Craven and Mussanti, along with volunteers such as Frieda Zemke and Brenda Leonard (pictured above sorting hundreds of book donations) are looking forward to welcoming the public back into the store. The unprecedented shut-down has crippled many non-profits, such as food pantries and churches that rely heavily on monetary donations and supplies.

Keeping people safe clearly was the objective and the sign on the back door of St. Paul Resale perhaps offered advice more valuable than the antique 1937 Roos chest prominently displayed in the front lobby: “Store temporarily closed due to the concerns about the spread of the coronavirus and for the health of our volunteers and customers. Thank you. Stay healthy.

Catholics and Christians, faithful in every denomination across the country and even around the world are anxiously awaiting an answer to one pressing question: when can we return to our place of worship? For Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish and Shrine in Melrose Park, the uncertainty has been especially stressful as the fate of an unbroken tradition, celebrated for more than 120 years, weighed heavily on the minds and hearts of devotees who make the pilgrimage to Melrose Park for the annual novena and procession. Finally, in a video posted to social media, Pastor Giovanni Bizzotto made the long-awaited announcement.

“We are ready to celebrate once again the great anniversary of the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on July 19, starting with the novena on July 10. PANTRY VOLUNTEERS TAKING SNAP APPLICATIONS

As of May 26, the Westchester Food Pantry (WFP) volunteers will be taking SNAP applications over the phone. SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) was formerly known as “food stamps” and it is the largest anti-hunger program in America.

To apply, participants must meet certain income guidelines. Volunteers will ask for a list of all earned and unearned income received in the prior 30 days. Additionally, volunteers will ask the following questions to determine household size and composition: • Does anyone else live with you?

• What are their ages and relationship to you?

• Who do you buy and prepare food with?

• Is everyone in your household a US citizen?

• Have you or any other members of your household been declared disabled by the Social Security Administration?

To apply for SNAP, call the WFP at 708-927-4826. Clients will be connected to a volunteer who can help them apply over the phone.

Ordinarily, world-renowned Brookfield Zoo, operated by the Chicago Zoological Society on 216 acres of land owned by the Forest Preserves of Cook County, is packed with visitors during the summer months. People of all ages have been captivated by the Zoo’s more than 200 animal residents—in fact, more than two million people visit the Zoo every year. Except this year. But even though it’s temporarily closed, Brookfield Zoo wants to keep the connection between animals and its members, guests and friends so it’s “Bringing Brookfield Zoo To You” initiative includes live chats every weekday at 11 am on the Zoo’s Facebook page and every Tuesday and Thursday at 2 pm on the Zoo’s Instagram profile. The Morton Arboretum, an internationally-recognized outdoor tree museum and research center located in Lisle, boasts 1,700 acres of hiking trails, exhibits and much more.

The Aboretum has been closed to visitors during the shelter in place but a phased reopening will begin June 1-14 for members only. The six colossal troll sculptures in the Arboretum’s popular Troll Hunt exhibition (pictured above), which was scheduled to close in June, will remain through early 2021. While buildings, indoor restrooms, the cafe and restaurant, etc. will remain closed, Arboretum grounds will open and continue to be evaluated and adjusted during the ongoing health situation.

Advance, online timed-entry member passes will be required to ensure paced arrivals and safe attendance levels.

This will be the only method for admission at this time. As everyone anticipates the beauty and respite of the Arboretum in summer, the health and safety of visitors will remain of utmost importance. Entering and visiting will be different from usual. Anyone interested in membership should visit the website at www.mortonarb.org. The Arboretum currently plans to open to non-member visitors on June 15 and will adjust those plans accordingly. Some of the Arboretum’s special events and educational programs that were scheduled for June have been transitioned to an online format; that information is also available on the website.

As a nonprofit, the Arboretum relies on admissions, tuition, events and donations to help advance the planting and conservation of trees for a greener, healthier and more beautiful world. ANTIGONE SHARRIS

Triton staffer featured in Crain’s list Triton College recently congratulated its Engineering Technology faculty member Antigone Sharris on being included in Crain’s Chicago Business’s 2020 Notable women in Manufacturing. The list honors 34 accomplished professionals who all have different, yet distinguished, roles in manufacturing and all of them advocate for bringing more women into the traditionally male-dominated industry.

Sharris was recognized for her years of college classroom teaching experience. At Triton, she teaches on topics including fluid power, machine design, CAD, engineering graphics and welding. “Manufacturing education is multifaceted,” explained Sharris. “Students not only need the academic in-class learning portion of learning theories and equations but they must have hands-on experience, too, in order to be effective team members in manufacturing.”

Sharris said her teaching goals include having students come out of programs with a diverse set of skills, ready to work in the ever-changing world of manufacturing.

Crain’s also recognized Sharris for her mentorship and involvement in exposing middle and high school girls to opportunities to study and explore careers in manufacturing. In 2011, Sharris created Girls Adventuring in Design, Engineering and Technology (GADgET), an interactive, hands-on summer camp at Triton funded in part by the Nuts, Bolts and Thingamajings Foundation. Since it began at Triton it has expanded to Richard J. Daley College, College of DuPage, Lake Park High School and Ridgewood High School. Sharris also created Girls Learning to Weld (GLoW) and acts as a mentor and coordinator for FIRST Robotics and TechSavvy. “Manufacturing is my core. I found a love for making things early.

Creating something out of nothing really appeals to me,” Sharris said.

SHAWNA ROUBITCHEK New ECPA Managing Director

Elmhurst Centre for Performing Arts recently moved into the “next phase of its growth and development” by naming Shawna Roubitchek as Managing Director and opening permanent office space at 105 S. York Street in Elmhurst, according to ECPA Board President Jeff Budgell.

Roubitchek has been involved with ECPA since its inception, most recently as Co-Chair of the annual Spotlight Gala, the group’s largest fundraiser. She brings a wealth of experience in project management, hospitality and tourism, having worked at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, Hyatt Hotels and the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau. In her new role, she will be overseeing operations, managing current fundraising and outreach programs as well as looking for additional ways to spread awareness and gain support for the development of a performing arts venue in the western suburbs. “I’m excited to be a part of such an incredible initiative. In so many ways, the arts shape, change and, most importantly, enhance our lives. A performing arts center will be an impactful addition to our residents and those in the surrounding areas,” said Roubitchek. 19TH CENTURY’S NEW BOARD Focusing on continued growth through diversity

The Nineteenth Century Charitable Association (NCCA) has announced its new Board members for 2020-2022. The Oak Parkbased organization, whose membership has grown by over 30% since 2018, is grateful to its members and the community at-large for its support of the cultural programming and community connections that are at the core of its mission.

With an eye on continuing the growth, Allen L. Parchem, Ph.D., was named to lead the club as President for four years.

Formerly the Vice President, he has served the Oak ParkRiver Forest community in a variety of ways, including being a mentor in the Future Philanthropists Program established by the OPRF Community Foundation. He has also served on committees at First United Church of Oak Park.

Further strengthening the Board are: retired attorney Arnold Pagniucci, Legal Committee; Jerry Slowik, with a career in public accounting, will serve as Treasurer; Trudy Doyle, will bring her strong community roots to the position of Co-Director, Community Outreach.

Joining Trudy is Angela Skalla, a retired nurse and current volunteer with ROPH. Suzanne Helfrich will serve as Co-Director, Development; Mary Ann Hagerty, Co-Director, Marketing; Fowzi Kelty, Co-Director, Membership; Rhea Yap, CoDirector, Nominations; and Robin Wienke, Director, Building and Grounds.

Students in all courses will be required to have access to a computer, WiFi service and a webcam for successful completion of courses.

Online: Courses designed for fully online instruction that meet asynchronously. In asynchronous learning, students complete courses on their own time. Students are responsible for participating in courses activities, submitting assignments, completing assessments online and meeting deadlines as established by the instructor.

Emergency Remote Learning (ERL): Emergency remote learning is a face-to-face course that has moved into a virtual platform as a result of the pandemic. Courses meet online on specified days at specific times. Students are responsible for participating in courses activities, submitting assignments, completing assessments online and meeting deadlines as established by the instructor.

Blended: Courses that require hands-on experience to meet objectives include both face-to-face meetings and online instruction. Safe practices and social distancing will be followed for any on-campus portions of the course. Blended courses are part of the career and technical education programs.
