125 YEARS OF UNBROKEN TRADITION

“

tina valentino

There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.

“

—Albert Einstein

Miracles. In a perfect world, the story of a 125-year unbroken tradition would warrant maximum press coverage—from daily newspapers and television channels and especially from local publications like Neighbors magazine, which has been dedicated to amazing people, accomplishments and traditions since its inception 16 years ago. But, as we all well know, it’s a far-from-perfect world. In fact, it’s most often a sad and desperate world where stories of heartbreak and disaster, divisiveness and hatred rule the headlines. A story of the unfathomable devotion and faith that brought people from all over the world to Melrose Park for more than a century is barely a blip on the radar. I can only speak for Neighbors—in a perfect world, I would love nothing more than to dedicate special sections to the rare and wonderful occasions that happen in our circulation area—featuring old and recent photos, interviews with reflections on the past and ruminations about the future—but, sadly, it’s economics that gets in the way. Still, since my first job at the Star-Sentinel newspapers in 1982, I have proudly pounced on whatever space and venue was given to me to beat the drum about the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Being a lifelong parishioner does not imply great partiality; instead, it implies an extraordinary respect, curiosity and fascination with a promise made by an Italian- American farmer at her gravely-ill husband’s bedside: restore his health and I will establish a feast, a “Festa della Madonna,” to express my gratitude every remaining day of my life. Emanuella DeStefano got her miracle in the privacy of her prayers—and, unknowingly, she provided countless faithful and even doubtful people from all walks of life a place to pour out their aching hearts, give thanks and unite in the singular belief, as Willa Cather wrote, that “Where there is great love there are always miracles.” Much has changed in the world since the first Feast when men wore suits and ties and women wore dresses, hats and veils, despite the intense July heat. There were no tank tops, shorts, sneakers, cell phones and cigarette breaks on the sidewalk then; there were only devotees who walked barefoot, carrying candles that dripped hot wax onto their hands, who prayed the rosary in unison and donated whatever they possibly could—even their wedding rings. Every year, I hear people complain, “The Feast isn’t what it used to be.” Well, of course it isn’t— if you move away and don’t instill the passion for and need for tradition in your children by your example, crowds dwindle, demographics change and, once again, simple economics will get in the way. But thankfully, miracles and the miracle of the 125th Feast trump economics and the apathetic, disrespectful society we’ve become. Someone once said: “Miracles happen every day. Not just in remote country villages or at holy sites halfway across the globe, but here, in our own lives.” If you believe this, then take part in the tradition for an hour, at nightly novena or experience the emotional Sunday procession. It may seem strange to some that we invest so much time, energy and expense in preserving traditions but even on days when I ask myself those very same questions, I look at my mother, my family, I hear the Feast band and bombs, admire the sacrifices made by everyone around me and it all makes sense. Be inspired. Join us.

The first celebration in honor of Madonna del Carmine was initiated by Emanuella PellettiereDeStefano, founder of the first small wooden shrine on the 900th block of 24th Avenue. Erected in 1894, after prayers for her sick husband were answered, it served the faithful for nearly 10 years before a parish was established. Since then, hundreds of thousands of people have made the pilgrimage to Melrose Park. For those who cannot attend, intentions and donations can be mailed or made online. This commemorative coin and other items will mark the special occasion.

READER’S DIGEST REVEALS THE 2018 TOP 10 “NICEST PLACES IN AMERICA” VILLAGE OF NORTH RIVERSIDE NEEDS YOUR DAILY VOTE Reader’s Digest recently named ROBIN ROBERTS the 10 finalists of its second annual search for “The Nicest Place in America,” a national crowd-sourced effort to uncover places where people are kind and treat each other with respect. In an era of cultural and political divides, “Nicest Places” is Reader’s Digest’s response. The nationwide search received 450 submissions. Finalists were selected by Reader’s Digest (RD) editors with input from a panel of judges from partner organizations, including Robin Roberts, co-anchor of ABC’s “Good Morning America.” The 10 finalists will appear in the November issue of the magazine, with one winning place to be featured in a cover story and on “Good Morning America.” Public voting will continue until July 7th. Among the finalists was the Village of North Riverside. RD editors wrote: “Is there a rule book for being nice? In North Riverside there is. The town has put together a 65-page manual on caring for each other that can be boiled down into one dictate: The Golden Rule. “Out of all the vivid submissions crowd-sourced on our website, the judges found these 10 extraordinary,” said RD editor-in-chief Bruce Kelley. “The picture the media presents today is that we’re divided, but these stories exemplify the America that’s too often ignored, where people trust their neighbors, welcome strangers, band together to overcome tragedy, and give others the dignity and respect they deserve. America is going to love hearing the stories of these places. They inspire us to be better for each other, every day.” Other finalists include Bothwell, Washington; Ellijay, Georgia; Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, Maryland; Kalamazoo, Michigan; Katy, Texas, Life Moves Yoga in Killeen, Texas; Mower County, Minnesota; North Evergreen Street in Burbank, California; and Yassin’s Falafel in Knoxville, Tennessee.

This year, ABC’s “Good Morning America” is joining Reader’s Digest in telling the stories of these special places, with co-anchor Robin Roberts serving as judge and guest editor for the Nicest Places coverage in the November issue. Nicest Places will be featured on the program throughout the summer and fall leading up to the November announcement. RD is partnering with USA Today’s 10best.com to power the public voting.

CAST YOUR VOTE

Everyone in the country can vote online daily from any device on any of these websites: www.10best.com/nicest www.northriverside-il.org www.neighborsmagazine.com “What are the odds that a town in our circulation area would be considered for this great honor,” asked Neighbors publisher Tina Valentino. “Right now, it’s one thing that we can all be proud of so let’s get out the vote and help North Riverside take home the title.”
