What a ride. It took a while to fifnd a copy but it was worth flfipping through the inaugural issue when I fi f nally fo f und one. A fa f t 48-pager, fu f ll of advertisers who took the plunge with me, particularly Gioacchino’s Ristorante and Pizzeria in Bellwood—the fi f rst to get on board. It was a stroll down memory lane, fo f r sure, to look back at the businesses who put their fa f ith in the idea of a monthly magazine that would fi f ll a local void—giving them an aff ffordable opportunity to reach a wider audience while promoting people and places that would otherwise go unnoticed. While a handfu f l of our original anchors are still in business, many have closed, retired or changed owners. Landmark r s like Kiddieland, Sorrento’s, Phoenix Oriental, We W stlake Hospital, National Bank of Commerce, Mel-Park r Deli & Liquors, Northlake Auto and TCF Bank provided the thrust needed to put the idea in fl f ight. And, while the fl f ight wasn’t without considerable turbulence at fi f rst, including an intense court battle, we buckled our seatbelts and fo f rged on.

I wrote this back in 2002: “As this fi f rst issue was put together, I pictured it as having purchased a “handyman special” kind of house, a place that will undergo many changes, retain many fa f vorite f atures while others will fi fe f nd themselves in the dumpster. We W ’ll renovate it together, with your input and ideas, and in the end it will be a place where old fr f iends and new will converge.” Not much has changed. Every one of the last 239 issues has been a labor of love, a sweat equity proj o ect aimed at partnering more than profi f ting. The fa f ct that our advertising rates haven’t changed in more than a dozen years, despite paper and gas hikes is proof of that, though the current economy may fo f rce our hands.

While there have been signifi f cant awards and honors along the way, the real gratifi f cation comes in so many other ways: fr f om the advertisers who stayed with us during the pandemic despite their own economic hardships to the handwritten notes, an email or a total stranger who stops to say “I just love N ighbors Magazine.” Those moments make hauling bundles fr Ne f om town to town in the sweltering heat and fr f eezing cold—even as we are getting older and the bundles seem so much heavier—worth it every time.

When Ne N ighbors made its debut, there was no social media. Facebook didn’t become a “thing” until 2006 and Instagram didn’t roll around until 2010. Despite what some pundits say about digital replacing print media, we know fo f r a fa f ct that, until fu f rther notice, our readers like to hold a hard copy in their hands 99% of the time. While making deliveries, sometimes a grocery store shopper or a bank customer will ask, “Is that the new issue?” and excitedly get theirs hot off f the press. Still, we’re excited to utilize social media to reach as many people as possible, thrilled to have amassed nearly 2,500 fo f llowers on Facebook and we’re breaking new ground on Instagram all the time.

I used to say to my mom all the time I wish I had a real job with a 401K and insurance and paid sick days and vacation time. I should’ve never started my own business. These deadlines are killing me, work r ing around the clock sometimes fo f r not much money is ridiculous. I’m sure every small business owner has said the same thing at some point. Thanks, mom, fo f r always listening and fo f r riding shotgun on countless deliveries; and thanks to all of you who saved me fr f om punching a clock, long commutes, a crabby boss and packing a lunch. Keep supporting local—it makes communities strong and it makes ideas a reality. Like Ne N ighbors magazine.

Festa Della Famiglia in Stone Park

Sponsored by the Societa San Francesco di Paola, the Festa Della Famiglia will be held on the grounds of Casa Italia, 3800 Division in Stone Park. Festivities culminate on August 14 with a procession and a Mass at 11:45 am followed by a family festival with food, entertainment and a candlelight procession. Vespers at 7 pm on August 13 will feature a torchlight procession.

Mayor André Harvey (at right) invites area residents to the 2022 Ta T ste of Bellwood set for Friday, y August 12 from 6 to 10 pm, Saturday, y August 13, noon to 10 pm and Sunday, y August 14, Noon to 9 pm at the Village Hall campus, 3200 Washington Boulevard. The Ta T ste of Melrose Park returns to celebrate its 40th anniversary September 2-4 on the Village campus at 25th and Lake Street. All food items still cost $3 or less. The Ta T ste is looking for volunteers—anyone interested should call 708-343-4000, ext. 4448.

Speake k r Welch announces $50.7 million in infrastructure grants to communities House Speaker Emanuel "Chris" Welch recently announced $50.7 million in new infrastructure grants to communities across Illinois to help with vital infrastructure projects that include water treatment upgrades, road construction, ADA accessibility improvements, and more. "These investments in our state's infrastructure help us to rebuild a better Illinois and future for all," said Speaker Welch. "As we work to address our aging infrastructure, we're also providing the opportunity for good-paying union jobs and continuing to help our economy recover.r Most importantly, y we're doing it all through the lens of equity so we can ensure our communities that have suffered from systemic disinvestment have the opportunity to grow and prosper along with the rest of Illinois."

The grants range in total from $343,000 to $2 million. In Speaker Welch's district alone, projects include the Hillside Washington Street Sanitary and Stormwater Sewer System Improvements, which is receiving $2 million and the Village of Broadview which is receiving $574,005 for street roadway reconstruction, utility improvements and ADA crossings.

ST. PAUL’S FREE LIBRARY Eight years ago, when Carla Schoepp’s family asked what she wanted for Christmas, they fulfilled her wish by erecting a Little Free Library near her Maywood home. Recently, y she noticed that some Oak Park churches had similar free libraries.

“Since we are always looking for outreach ideas, the thought was presented to our Care Corps members and we began looking into this project. It’s just one more way to tell the community of Jesus and His love,” explained Schoepp, a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1000 W. Lake in Melrose Park, and a volunteer at the St. Paul Resale Shop.

When the idea was approved, Rev. Douglas Groll, also a member at St. Paul, put his woodworking talents to the test, creating a Little Free Library that is an amazing replica of the church, established in the village in 1892. “The purpose of the library is a no-cost book exchange. Anybody can take a book and leave a book or just take a book,” said Schoepp. “St. Paul has started this exchange not only to share secular books but to share Bibles, devotional materials, children’s religious materials, pamphlets and publications that might help others enrich their faith. We invite readers from around the area to visit the Little Free Library and avail themselves of the books.

There are both English and Spanish books available for adults and children.”

Anyone interested will find the Little Free Library located on the front lawn of the church.

The $60 per person attendance fee includes a nine-hole golf experience with glow-in-the-dark golf balls, golf carts, food, raffle, a putting contest and awards. Limited space is available, with a 72-golfer max. Participants are encouraged to pay prior to the event and all forms of payment are acceptable. Checks should be made payable to the Triton College Foundation.

“The Glow Golf Outing is something different and it’s a fun way to raise money, y ” said Lilly. “All golfing levels and experience are welcome to come and have a good time.”

The Triton College Alumni Association gives out four $500 Alumni Legacy Scholarships a year to help offset financial tuition costs to students. The association is dedicated to building and encouraging lifelong connections between the alumni and Triton College. Their goal is to connect with alumni and engage with them the future successes of Triton College.

The Triton College School of Business is offering a Social Media Digital Marketing Certificate Program. Those who receive the certificate can work in digital marketing and will be given the foundation to have a career in the industry of social media.

“The world of social media is evolving,” said Dr.r William Griffin, chairperson of the School of Business. “Today, y entrepreneurs really rely and depend on social media for their businesses.”

Dr.r Griffin believes that those who receive this certificate will be able to find jobs in marketing, project management, advertising and Google analytics. Jobs in digital marketing could pay up to $62,000 per year.r Triton’s Social Media Digital Marketing Certificate Program will be 30 credit hours (two semesters) with students taking Social Media and Digital Marketing, Intro to Business, Web Page Design, Advertising in a Social Media Era and Business Analytics classes, among others.

Since there was an increase in digital marketing jobs from 2017-2018, going into the future, Dr.r Griffin feels that there is a need for a Social Media Digital Marketing Certificate Program on Triton’s campus. “We offer one open house a semester for students that are interested,” he said.
