The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members. —Coretta Scott King

Merry Christmas. If you Google the words “support local,” you’ll get about 72 million hits—and the vast maj a ority of all of the images and links have to do with the holiday season. How ridiculous is that? If there was ever a time fo f r supporting local, it’s now. Businesses, non-profi f ts, even village and park r district programs and events in this post-pandemic period are depending on us to engage, participate, sponsor, spend a little or just show up. Compassionate actions are necessary if you want a great community—even a great planet. Yo Y u’ll fi f nd some calls to action in this issue. Don’t just turn the page. Wi W th a little eff ffort, you can perpetuate traditions, inspire your children and make a diff fference. Sometimes it’s as easy and fr f ee as sharing a Facebook post. I know because it happened to me recently. I saw my fr f iend Suzi Meo’s social media post. She work r s fo f r Nordstrom’s Last Chance in Yo Y rk r town Center and the warehouse had too many pallets of PPE (personal protection equipment) packages taking up space. Processing manager Johnnie Thorns agreed to give Suzi a chance to donate the still-usefu f l safe f ty items befo f re they were hauled off f to a landfi f ll. Aft f er messaging back and fo f rth and reaching out to some of my contacts, we had our very own Earth Day moment on the E Dock. Thanks to our fr f iends at Quasthoff f ’s Flowers, 8125 W. Grand in River Grove who supplied the van, I was able to pick up eight huge containers fi f lled with Max & Motion PPE kits (fi f lled with wipes, hand sanitizer, anti-germ keys, fa f ce masks and more). Probably almost 2,000 kits total, they’re now on their way to a nursing home, a fo f od pantry, even another country. Mandates might be over but staying clean and safe f should remain a priority, if we’ve learned anything at all. Thanks to Suzi’s compassionate actions, which cost nothing, the landfi f ll was spared and many people benefi f tted. The same kind of do-the-right-thing “support local” enthusiasm is happening all around you. The time is now to tell your fr f iends and relatives about the return of the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the Ta T ste of Melrose Park r . Share it on Facebook and Instagram; make plans to attend; if you’re a business owner, dig deep and take an ad, consider a sponsorship, invest in the traditions that bring fu f n, life f , love and fa f ith to the community because it is money well spent. So much planning goes into these events, I just hate it when someone says “I didn’t go because I didn’t know anything about it.” Step up, spread the word. T ll your fr Te f iends about Wa W lk/Bike with Mayor Katrina Thompson in Broadview every Saturday and Sunday. Set aside some time fo f r your health and wellness, join with neighbors, embrace the opportunity to be outside in the sunshine and take a closer look at the community you don’t see when you’re whizzing by in your car. Consider the Earth Day events at Brookfi f eld Zoo and Tr T ailside Museum. Clean up, make room in your home and your life f , properly dispose of electronics, clothing and books or spend the day cleaning up litter that diminishes the beauty of nearby Thatcher Wo W ods with a group of fr f iends, a scout troup or even a senior club. Details fo f r these events are on page 10 of this issue. Or, if you live in Melrose Park r , leave a donation out fo f r the Scouting fo f r Food Drive (see page 16). It doesn’t take much to achieve greatness within a community, just a little pride and compassion, a random act of kindness—and a copy of Ne N ighbors magazine. It’s our mission to provide you with ideas and opportunities so use each issue as your guide to support local businesses and events. Happy spring, Happy Easter, neighbors. Let’s hop to it!

“Due to the pandemic, the last two years have been difficult and different; we were forced to come up with creative ways to continue our tradition.” from a statement by the Fe F ast Committee of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
129 YEARS of Tradition nbroken despite p
THE PA P NDEMIC
The Feast of Our Lady of Melrose Park in Melrose Park known around the world had a very humble and simple beginning: Emmanuela De Stefano pray a ed desperately to Our Lady of Mount Carmel for her sick husband. When he recovered, she kept her promise to venerate and honor the Madonna, raising funds and commissioning the statue that devotees still visit in the Shrine of the parish at 1101 N. 23rd Av A enue. This year, post-pandemic, the Feast returns to its same simple religious beginnings: Novena, Mass and processions.
Feast Returns to its Roots Novena, Masses, Wa W lking Procession Back in 2022
a story by Tina Valentino
During the pandemic, the Feast Committee of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish and Shrine was forced to think long and hard about how to continue a tradition that had, for over 120 years, never been broken. Thanks to technology, y imagination and great faith, the 36-member Committee did not disappoint. Nightly novena was streamed “live” and the first-ever mobile procession with a new route and without candlehouses brought the statue of the Madonna del Carmine to the east side of Melrose Park for the first time, which was wellreceived by residents who embraced the extra effort during the COVID crisis. With restrictions finally lifted, the Committee reached out to those who not only carry the statue but also those candlehouse organizations who have participated in the
walking procession in the past. “We met with each group independently and both were enthusiastic and committed to the traditional procession and the original route. They made it clear to us how they felt and, after careful consideration and discussions with our Pastor,r we are busy preparing for the 129th Feast,” explained Committee member John Nardella. Nardella, fellow Committee members Jaime Reyes and Joe Casale and everyone involved agree that engagement and excitement about the 129th anniversary begins now, w as early as April, to ensure that everyone who wants to be involved knows the schedule of events, can take part in the rose presentation, join with friends for refreshments after Novena and purchase tickets in the ad book and for the Grand Raffle drawing set for July 16. story continues on page 8

While many reminisce about the street festival that was once part of the Feast, Nardella also explained the impracticality of a festival at this time. “We have to remember that the Feast started as a religious event. The street fest was profitable once and it supported the school and the church for many years. We’re not in the business of beef sandwiches and carnival rides but as our pastor said, we’re in the business of religion and faith.” Schedule of events for the 129th year include: July 8-16 Solemn Novena presided by Rev. Richard Fragomeni, Shrine Rector at Our Lady of Pompeii, nationallyacclaimed speaker,r author,r retreat master and teacher.r Tuesday, y July 12, Banner Presentation Wednesday, y July 13, Rose Presentation. Order forms are already available to download from the parish website. Thursday, y July 14, memorial service for deceased members of the Feast Committee and Caliendo’s Banda Napoletana marches through the streets. Friday, y July 15, Feast Celebration Dinner at 6 pm Saturday, y July 16, Masses in English and Spanish Sunday, y July 17, 7:30 am Mass in English; 9 am Mass in Italian; 10:30 am statue leaves church in procession to field Mass; Noon Mass on church grounds; 1:30 pm traditional procession; 4 pm statue returns to church for Benediction.
