IT’S ALL RIGHT HERE FOR YOU!

FROM CONCERTS UNDER THE STARS to SENTIMENTAL SUMMER MEMORIES

tina valentino —Pope John XXII

It’s easier for a father to have children than for children to have a real father.

Papa. It’s been a really long time since I’ve celebrated Father’s Day but, just like everyone else who has lost someone that they loved and admired, not a single day goes by that I don’t mention or think about my grandfather. Friends and relatives who knew him will often say that I was spoiled but I wasn’t—I was loved unconditionally. Big difference. He didn’t have enough money to spoil me with “things” but I guess you could say he spoiled me with time and patience. When I was a baby, he carried me so often that my shoes were hardly scuffed on the bottom; I was a regular customer at Kiddieland and Santa’s Village, long before I could even sit up straight on the rides. He had boundless patience when it came to me, sitting for hours at the Fisherman’s Dude Ranch while my friends and I made a lot of rainbow trout fat with cubes of cheese; waiting for us to golf 18 holes at public courses; holding the garden hose while I lit box after box of 4th of July snakes and sparklers and bottle rockets; taking me to bowling lessons at Super Bowl; waiting on the corner for me to walk home from school at lunchtime each day; tolerating thousands of shanked shots at the driving range; teaching me how to pump gas long before self-serve; and never failing to write a note on my high school lunch bag or buy me a chocolate Long John or an eclair on Saturdays. As Max Lucado said of his dad, “My father didn’t do anything unusual. He did what dads are supposed to do—be there.” None of the memories I cherish most are “spectacular”—we never took a trip to DisneyLand or Europe or the Grand Canyon. Some of my friends were blessed to have those amazing opportunities with their families, going on road trips and regular summer or Christmas break vacations. Other friends had wealthy dads who put pools and swingsets in their yards, had season tickets to games and lavished the kids with dogs and bikes, then cars and cash. It never occurred to me that we didn’t have much because as my mom calls it now, we were “inside happy.” Looking back now, I wouldn’t change a thing. And I always felt safe. Linda Poindexter wrote, “When my father didn’t have my hand... he had my back.” Same was true of my grandfather. When I nearly died from appendicitis and a lingering infection, my grandfather grabbed the surgeon in the coffee shop and pretty much dragged him back to my room, saving my life. So much for being politically-correct. The best dads and grandfathers aren’t always perfect—they make lousy Santas, they yell at the umpires instead of keeping their mouths shut in the bleachers, they wear ugly ties, comb over their hair, have dirt under their nails, have a favorite chair no one is allowed to sit in or sing loud in church but they take their jobs as role models, protectors, shoulders-to-cry on and biggest cheerleaders seriously. The world is in need of better dads. Too often the burden falls on grandfathers and moms. Spiteful, lazy, deadbeat and abusive dads, you need to shape up or ship out. Life is hard enough for kids today. When a family loses a good dad, I hope that uncles and brothers, even neighbors will step up for daddy-daughter, father-son days and on ordinary days because little things matter. As they say, anyone can be a father but not everyone can be a dad...or a papa.

College Fire Science Program Coordinator LIFE Triton Bill Justiz helps save “miracle” baby at the Saver Chicago firehouse where he is stationed

Throughout his 20-year career as a firefighter/paramedic with the Chicago Fire Department and other departments, Bill Justiz has provided emergency care for countless people. But he says none of those calls were quite like what he encountered on May 7. He and other first responders sprung into action when a woman brought a newborn baby into the firehouse; the baby was wrapped in a towel and had been left in an alley. We started CPR, ventilating, inserted an IV and warmed the baby,” Justiz recalled. When the infant was brought to a nearby hospital the prognosis seemed dire. Eventually though, the baby began showing signs of life. Justiz, a graduate of Triton’s Fire Science program himself, teaches EMT and fire science courses. He is also a part-time lieutenant of the River Grove Fire Department. For more info about the program, email williamjustiz@triton.edu.

A letter from

Len Gassmann to the Veterans Park District Board and District residents

Activities and programs from

Veterans Park District

It has been a great honor to serve the people of Veterans Park District for the past 18 years. I have had the pleasure to serve with a group of dedicated people and been involved with some wonderful charitable causes through my association with the District. As a veteran, I embraced the name of our Park District and the reason for our existence: to honor the memories and sacrifices made by our brave soldiers, sailors, airmen, Coast Guard and Marine Corps veterans in the communities where they lived and that they loved. I hope we continue to honor their memories and strive to emulate their service to others. I also must tell you how proud I was to be involved with the transformation of our Park District over the last 18 years. We started with an old, dilapidated building at Grant Park and through the vision of the late Commissioner Ron Glick and the help of a great many people, wound up with the fine facility that now serves as our headquarters and is a recreational mecca for baseball, football, basketball, soccer and a multitude of other activities. Over the years, we also rebuilt Bulger Hall and replaced a non-functional Leo Pool with the magnificent Leoni Complex. We also embarked on a neighborhood park friendly program that put beautiful, functional and necessary small green spaces, flowers, tot lots and comfort zones into the neighborhoods. This program brought about Olsen, Phosphalia, Mannheim, Montoya, Latoria and the new Viet Nam Veterans Memorial Park. All in all, I believe we accomplished much and I was thrilled to be a part of it. Finally, my pride in the expansion of and success of our Special Rec program is boundless. We committed to improve it and increased our resources to aid in that endeavor. It has paid off immensely. Kathy Thomas and our clients make our program very special and the envy of many other park districts. So, as Bob Hope said, “Thanks for the memories.” And thank you for allowing me to be part of such a wonderful organization. Sincerely,

Len Gassmann

River Forest resident Jim Jacob honored with 2019 Outstanding Tutor Award

Triton College Access to Literacy Program tutor Jim Jacob recently received the 2019 Outstanding Tutor Award from Literacy Volunteers of Illinois and the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Center for Literacy. The award was presented at LVI’s annual On the Road to Literacy Conference. Jacob, a River Forest resident, has been working with adult students since becoming a volunteer tutor at Triton in 2011.
