The Number 12.
As the new year begins, here’s a little trivia: The number 12 is associated with the cardinal. Cardinals are seen during all 12 months of the year. A cardinal’s nest often contains 12 eggs. Native American lore holds that if you have encountered a cardinal, expect good luck to follow, possibly in 12 hours, 12 days or at noon or midnight. As we begin a new 12-month cycle, an opportunity for restoration and renewal, it seemed kind of eerie that red cardinals are on my mind. I don’t see them very often but I’d like to—in fact, I’ve made only one resolution so far, promising naturalist Irene Flebbe at Trailside Museum in River Forest that in 2017 I would abandon my desk long enough to explore some of the awesome nature in the neighborhood. Hand me the binoculars, it’s time to go on a bird walk. Stumbling on a cardinal sitting confidently on a snowy branch might be the perfect way to start 2017. My cousin Fran almost always sees a cardinal outside her window and, like many people, particularly Native Americans, believes it’s a symbol or a messenger from the Great Spirit. An interesting website, www.thecardinalexperience.com, offers tremendous insight to the possible spiritual meanings, symbolism, religious ties and essence of this little but loud red bird that flutters in and out of people’s lives in mysterious ways. “Cardinals can bring color and vitality into our lives. Their crimson color can remind us of the importance of ourselves as individuals in the circle of life. As the cardinal red color is symbolic of faith, so it can remind us to “keep the faith” through circumstances that might look bleak, dark and hopeless.” The personal stories posted by nearly 200 people are fascinating to read; lost and sometimes desperate for some kind of sign, it was the cardinal that showed up unexpectedly, getting their attention when almost nothing else could. As Emily Dickinson wrote in one of the first poems I ever read and loved: Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul—and sings the tunes without words— and never stops at all. Dickinson, of course, doesn’t specify but during her long reclusive life I would imagine that, from the many windows of her father’s Amherst, Massachusetts mansion, she found moments of hope and inspiration from this small flitting bird. I like to think of some of the people we featured in 2016 as cardinals, especially those who stepped up for our unprecedented effort to help the veterans at Hines V.A. Hospital. Just when you least expect it, a person—or a stranger—from Berkeley, Hillside, River Grove, Melrose Park, Elgin or Maywood pops into your life for a reason, like angels, tweaking your outlook on things just a little bit, inspiring you to forge on a little harder and a little longer, helping you realize you’re never completely alone. Thinking back to the more than 150 issues we’ve produced, each one introducing you to nearby messengers and harbingers, makes me wonder who we will meet in the coming new year. In 2016, each issue also included an extraordinary number of obituaries—many people I knew personally and loved. Thinking of them and their loved ones, maybe this verse from Victoria McGovern will brighten the new year: May you come to find comfort in and remember cardinals appear when angels are near. So go now, sit outside and drink your tea. Keep a look out for the little red bird—it is there your loved one will be. Wishing our neighbors health and happiness,

The Bridge is Open Commuters, ambulances can now access 25th Avenue
Say goodbye to the nearly 60 Metra trains and an average of more than 50 freight trains that have stalled commerce, commuters and emergency vehicles for decades. Last month, state and local officials not only cut the ribbon but escalating tensions from thousands of area residents who have been anxiously waiting for the bridge to open.
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) was joined today by the Union Pacific Railroad, local officials, particularly from Melrose Park ad Bellwood, and other stakeholders in the Chicago Region Environmental and Transportation Efficiency (CREATE) program to open the new 25th Avenue overpass. The $41 million gradeseparation project eliminates a conflict point between trains and regular vehicle traffic, reducing congestion, improving safety, ensuring better response times for emergency vehicles and making the area more attractive for economic development. "This new overpass pays immediate dividends for communities nearby, but its impact will be felt for years throughout the region," said Illinois Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn. "This project is what CREATE is all about: All parties coming together to find a solution that benefits everyone." The overpass accommodates two lanes of traffic in each direction over the railroad tracks. Each day, up to 59 Metra trains and 52 freight trains pass through this location. On average, 19,000 vehicles travel this stretch of 25th Avenue daily, with 3,500 of them getting stopped by trains before the overpass was built, resulting in 28,400 annual hours of motorist delay. The project also included resurfacing Main Street from between 25th and 19th avenues. "This project, many years in the making, will benefit all residents by serving as a conduit for economic development, quicker emergency vehicle response times and a safer traffic flow," said Melrose Park Mayor Ron Serpico. "This is much more than a railroad overpass. This is a bridge to a better quality of life for our communities." The railroad overpass project was made possible by a $22.2 million contribution from IDOT, $2.4 million from villages of Bellwood and Melrose Park, and $16.4 million from federal, railroad and other state sources. If your gross monthly income is less than $1,980 for an individual or $2,670 for a couple, you may qualify. The Chicago Hispanic Community for Peace, dedicated to providing support and education to families to prevent divorce and domestic violence, held its third annual Marriage Recognition Day Banquet at the Melrose Park Civic Center recently. Among those honored at the event was Melrose Park Police Officer Bill Treffens who was presented with the Community Service Leadership Award, which is presented to men and women in uniform who are exemplary citizens and who not only embody the virtues of excellence, honesty and integrity but make these traits visible through their actions. The award also acknowledges individuals who share to and care for the needy regardless of their race and nationality. Treffens, pictured at right in the photo above with representatives from the Chicago Hispanic Community for Peace, attended the event with his wife Lori and son Nicholas.
