Academy Awards. I’m well aware that they’re not coming up and I never watch anyway because I never have time to go to the movies and I have no use for Hollywood knowit-alls. However, the one thing that is noteworthy about this exceedingly long night of self-praise is the very short segment that they dedicate to the people who have left a signficant mark on the many facets of the film industry—from writing and creating costumes, to producing and directing to the actors and actresses we loved and the roles they played. When I announced Neighbors’ leap into its 17th year on Facebook, there was a tremendous amount of positive, encouraging and truly heartfelt feedback on social media about what we’ve accomplished in nearly two decades. Not an issue gets printed that I don’t think about our very shaky start. Those were tenuous times; begging local business owners to advertise in a start-up publication during tough economic times. Seems almost foolish now to think that I could make the Evel Knievel leap from Melrose Park’s village newsletter to a magazine that could fill a good news void in the western suburbs. The only thing I can remember about those very fragile early days is that there were a handful of people who stuck their necks out—Nella Curatolo from Gioacchino’s was our first advertiser and hasn’t missed a month in over 200 issues. Frank Gazzano from Sorrento’s took a chance on us. And others thankfully followed. Some deserve their Academy Award moment here, for their starring and cameo appearances in helping this fledgling publication get its wings. We’ve lost many friends who played supporting roles and they deserve to be recognized for their faith in me. As Mandy Hale wrote, “There is nothing more beautiful than someone who goes out of their way to make life beautiful for others.” And that they did. Among them, the late “Big Mike” Nardella, who, upon learning that we were drowning in printing debt nearly 20 years ago, invited his good friends at the Chicago Wolves to get involved in a fundraiser we called “Ink,” to help get us out of the red. Auctioning off autographed sticks, pucks and taking pictures with Skates, it was Mike along with Delia Abruzzo, who provided the venue, that gave Neighbors the breathing room it needed to take flight. I have a feeling Mike gave a lot of people the break they needed yet he never expected anything in return. It was Emilio Scalzitti, a true devotee of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, who gave me the greatest honor of my life/career in 2008: the Shrine’s Woman of the Year. As for Daniel Cartwright, well, he never took an ad or worked for me—in fact, he asked me for money once—which inspired a column that still haunts me because he was homeless, something that could happen to any of us who make a few bad decisions. Daniel passed away in June, alone on Mannheim Road—he knocked often but the right door never opened. And there are others who, through encouraging notes, shoulders to cry on and just being faithful friends and readers, will never be forgotten—like Rita Tiritilli and Jo Ann Raschillo. They say, “There are some who bring a light so great to the world, that even after they’ve gone, the light remains.” Thank you all, here and gone, for the bright light to show the way.

Nearly three quarters of a century after Edwin Walker left his family’s farm, the closeness of his family continues to enrich his life. Upon graduating from The Choate School, Walker returned to his native Kentucky, where he attended Centre College of Kentucky (CCK), in Danville. He was an outstanding college student, and graduated from CCK in 1954 “magna cum laude.” His outstanding undergraduate work resulted in a Fulbright Scholarship, which supported one-year of graduate studies at the University of Heidelberg, in Heidelberg, Germany (1954-1955). In 1955, Walker began a twelve-and-a-half year period of service in the U.S. Marine Corps. During that time he attained the rank of Major and story by Dan Perkins served in some of the “hottest hot-spots” in the world, including Guantanamo Bay, Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis; Korea (post-war); and Vietnam, in 1968. Throughout his military service, Major Walker demonstrated an abiding interest in faith and religion. Among his many awards and citations is a Certificate of Merit, which he earned from the U.S. Navy, Chief of Chaplains. Don’t miss this full blown pork party in Forest Park on Saturday, September 7 as the Village of Forest Park hosts RibFest 2019, 11 am to 11 pm. RSVP Seeks Volunteers for L’Arche and Travelers Aid
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) at Triton College is in search of volunteers to help out two partners, L’Arche Chicago and Travelers Aid. L’Arche Chicago owns and manages communal homes where 11 adults who have intellectual disabilities live. One of their locations is at 7313 Madison Street in Forest Park. Volunteers are needed to participate in the activities of the home as they are happening, including watching TV with members and helping with dinner, serving as guest chefs, light housekeeping and playing games. Travelers Aid needs volunteers to staff information desks at O’Hare International Airport’s domestic and international terminals. Volunteers walk the terminals searching for passengers in need, provide direction to lost and confused travelers, share information and assist vulnerable passengers. Young female students learn to weld during a brand new Triton summer program
On a typical summer day, you’ll usually find Maria Kunigk-Bakalar at the local ice rink. But for one week, the eighth grader traded edge jumps for edge joints, as she participated in GLoW (Girls Learning to Weld), Triton College’s brand new all-girls welding summer program. With ponytails draping from auto-darkening welding helmets, Maria and a dozen other girls measured, cut, fused and grinded materials from raw into recognizable. The camp was created by Antigone Sharris, coordinator/faculty member of Triton’s Engineering Technology Program. It’s supported by grants from the Nicor Gas Foundation and Nuts, Bolts and Thingamajigs, the Foundation of the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association (FMA). She hopes the camp will inspire girls to explore opportunities in the typically maledominated manufacturing field. Campers also traveled to local manufacturing facilities at which women have risen into leadership roles. That included a trip to Ex-Cell Kaiser in Franklin Park. There, Triton College graduate Janet Kaiser serves as CEO, overseeing about 50 employees. She guided GLoW campers on a tour of the facility where they saw the production of waste and recycling products—from welding and assembly to painting, polishing and packaging. Kaiser stressed to the girls that there are many opportunities available in the manufacturing industry, both on the factory floor and in other roles like programming and product design. A study conducted by the Manufacturing Institute reported that women made up about 29% of the manufacturing workforce nationally in 2016. That’s a sharp dip in comparison to the United States’ total workforce, of which women make up about 47%. “I came in thinking it would be just for fun, but I learned so much,” Maria said.
