To be or not to be. Relax, this isn’t going to be a lecture on William Shakespeare, even

though I’ll be celebrating the Bard’s 457th birthday on April 23—which happens to be the same day I was hired for my first “real” job at the Proviso Star-Sentinel newspaper. But it is a brief yet somber reflection of the fact that thoughts shared many years ago, like Shakespeare’s and Curie’s, still resonate today because, while the time period might be dramatically different, the challenges and emotions of life remain the same for all of us. Shakespeare’s immortal question (with a twist) has been on my mind for the past few months— to be or not to be...vaccinated against the dreaded coronavirus. I’m definitely not alone in having reservations. I can’t help but be skeptical about a vaccine created at “warp speed” in less than a year to tackle a global pandemic. After all, while it only took four years to put an end to mumps, it took 23 years to eliminate polio and 200 years to eradicate smallpox. True, billions in funding, previous scientific research, worldwide collaboration, expedited clinical trials and advanced technology contributed to the currently-approved vaccines but when old Lysol spray cans list coronavirus as one of the germs it can effectively kill, it’s all so unsettling that I have to roll my eyes. Despite all of my vacillation about the vaccination, I finally decided to roll up my sleeve. I have been and will continue to be diligent about wearing a mask, washing my hands and sanitizing—and I have been blessed with avoiding contamination despite never missing a day on this job that requires considerable travel and contact around the suburbs. Maybe herd immunity helped me, who knows. But thanks to Hillside Mayor Joseph Tamburino and his staff, I learned of a local opportunity to register for the Pfizer vaccine through the Village’s website. I also learned from Mayor Tamburino and also from Mayor Hermanek in North Riverside about the warp speed investment of time and attention to detail that goes into a “pop up” event that aims to bring as many available doses of the vaccine as possible into the community, particularly to its senior population (which isn’t particularly savvy about navigating websites and securing an appointment). In anticipation of the arrival of 1,400 doses, Mayor Tamburino’s staff worked long hours making personal phone calls to every senior in the village, even offering rides—all part of a concerted and compassionate effort to not only make sure that every perishable dose was utilized but to be absolutely certain that everyone who needed/wanted a vaccine had access to the event. It’s encouraging to learn and watch local leaders in action, making a positive impact under the most demanding and unprecedented circumstances. You would think that the distribution plan for a vaccine that we all hope will effectively change the course of the pandemic would be more methodical and efficient than a cattle call of people scrambling at pharmacies and grocery stores and old vacant K-Mart locations—but it’s not. It’s just hopeful music that we are all playing by ear. I would’ve gladly and promptly given up my place in line for someone else and, despite a head full of doubts prior to the injection, I had just one selfish reason for eventually giving in: making myself ready to visit my mom after a painfully-long lockdown. Stopping the pandemic will require using all the tools we have available to us. If there is going to be any light at the end of this tunnel, it’s time to take Marie Curie’s decades-old advice and apply it to our fearful lives today. For more information, see the information on page 6 this month. Be well.

FINALISTS

EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING Golden Apple’s mission is to inspire, develop and support teacher and school leader excellence in Illinois, especially in schools-of-need. Its vision is an Illinois in which every classroom has a great teacher and to realize this, Golden Apple is committed to making a material difference in resolving the teacher shortage throughout Illinois. Visit www.goldenapple.org for more information.

GOLDEN APPLE

Golden Apple, the leading Illinois nonprofit committed to preparing, honoring and supporting educators who advance educational opportunities for students, announced the 2021 finalists for the prestigious Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching. A highly competitive award process resulted in the selection of 32 Pre-K-3rd grade finalists—just 4.5% of a record-setting 708 nominations received from 67 counties in Illinois. "The vital role of teachers in the lives of students, their families, and their communities has been elevated even more over the past year,” said Alan Mather, President of Golden Apple. “The resilience

teachers have demonstrated while navigating teaching during the global pandemic and through a time of racial awakening, while providing the high-quality education and social-emotional support students need, has been tremendously impactful. We are honored to recognize the extraordinary work of these finalists." The Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching honor outstanding teachers for having lasting, positive effects on students’ lives and school communities. Teacher finalists demonstrate—in their teaching and results—significant, positive impact on their students’ growth and learning. story continues on page 10

GOLDEN APPLE continued from page 8 "The Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching elevate the critical roles that teachers have in our society," said Alicia Winckler, CEO of Golden Apple. "While we continue to face a growing teacher shortage, we know that exceptional teachers, like the 2021 finalists, are crucial to the success of students and play a significant role in the future success of Illinois and our nation." Northwestern University generously provides a spring sabbatical to award recipients at no cost. Each recipient receives a $5,000 cash award. Award recipients become Fellows of the Golden Apple Academy of Educators, a community of educators who play an important role in preparing the next generation of teachers in the Golden Apple Scholars and Accelerators programs—which are dedicated to addressing the teacher shortage in Illinois. Petra Choi, teaches all subjects to 3rd graders at William Beye Elementary School in Oak Park, viewed the pandemic as an opportunity to “up her game” as an educator, finding new ways to maintain an environment that provides each student with what they need to thrive educationally while maintaining a connection with one another and the community, despite the circumstances. Civic engagement is important to Choi and she helps students understand the impact they can have on their community. Recognizing the social isolation many seniors experienced during the pandemic, Choi facilitated a partnership with Oak Park Township in 2020, leading her class in a card making project that resulted in more than 400 cards delivered to seniors. Anh Pham, 3rd grade special education teacher at Joseph Academy in Melrose Park, is continually reflective and engaged in a continuous learning process. She adjusts her classroom lessons to the varying skill levels of her students, allowing them to demonstrate mastery in a way that is consistent with their goals. Kali Goldberg, Pre-K and English as a Second Language teacher at Garfield Elementary School in Maywood, has chosen to work in school districts primarily serving low-income students and tirelessly advocating for them to have the resources they need to overcome challenges to learning. In her first year of teaching, the majority of students spoke Spanish but her classroom had no Spanish-language books. Goldberg took it upon herself to apply for grants, advocate for school funding reform; she wrote op-eds, appeared on radio and TV for interviews, met with her legislator and knocked on doors to help build support for an equitable funding formula in Illinois, which eventually passed. As a result, her current classroom has entire sets of new classroom books and her school has been able to provide students with supplies for e-learning during the pandemic. Each scholar will present at the DREAM 2021 Conference, lending their voice and perspective to an audience of nearly 3,000 community college educators, administrators and leaders. “Sarah will undoubtedly make a positive impression during the DREAM 2021 conference and be remembered as a distinguished alumnus of Triton College upon her degree completion in May,” Bangura said.

DISTRIBUTING FREE MEALS Hospitality Department Gives Back Every year, the Triton Hospitality Industry Administration (HIA) Department prepares meals that are distributed to the community for free. This year, in coordination with the Triton Radiology Department, they wanted to give back to the health care workers in the area who have been doing so much to keep everyone safe. Triton culinary students prepared 150 meals and distributed them to Gottlieb Memorial Hospital (Melrose Park) and Northwest Community Hospital (Arlington Heights) employees last month.

TRITON STUDENTS RECOGNIZED For STEM Research at ILSAMP Symposium

Several Triton College students were recognized for their scholastic efforts at the 2020 Illinois Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (ILSAMP) Spring Symposium hosted by The Center for STEM Education & Research at Chicago State University. “Our students have participated in this event for the last two years and we were excited to bring home awards. The recognition is really a testament to our students’ hard work and their ability to pull together as a team for a joint accomplishment,” said Rudy Gostowski, Ph.D., chemistry professor, Arts and Sciences. A team of four environmental science students (Keion MacKey, Jesus Sida, Diane Spangler and Ann Margaret Villanueva) won third place for their presentation. The team was advised by Triton faculty member Sheldon Tur ner, Ph.D. Trang Nguyen earned a third place award for an oral presentation in chemistry; Florina Carrillo and Alberto Berrum-Quintana also made presentations. “Learning is not just about being lectured. It is important our students continue to have opportunities to conduct research and present their findings. It strengthens their understanding of the material, improves their communication skills and builds confidence,” said Kevin Li, dean, Arts and Sciences. Neighbors • 30
