The mission of Maywood Park District is to promote the development of a comprehensive park system that provides recreational opportunities for all residents as well as to offer diversified programs and activities that provide personal enjoyment, contribute to a sense of self-fulfillment and enhance the quality of life of its residents.
Greetings from Board President
Welcome from Executive Director
I am excited to have this opportunity to introduce you to your NEW Maywood Park District! I have served on this Board for two and a half years and I am proud to say that when you get people who truly want to make a difference and who will work together despite the challenges you will reap success! This Park District belongs to YOU and should offer recreation programming tailored to the residents of this Village. There have been many trials that we’ve faced as a Park District Board but our Commissioners refuse to be defeated. As a result of our combined efforts, we hired a staff that agreed to hang in there for the long haul; we addressed scrupulous spending; we decreased the payroll; and we focused on getting a budget that was real and obtainable; we hired a new accountant and a new attorney; and we appointed a new Executive Director. The rest is history. As you all know, we were granted state dollars in 2014; however, Governor Rauner put a halt on all park districts grants and froze a substantial amount of funding for park districts around the state. The grant we are waiting to receive will help us to open our historic 809 Madison building, which will give us much-needed space for more opportunities to serve you. We have not given up and we know that eventually we will open this building for the residents of the Village of Maywood. Your Maywood Park District Commissioners are proud of the changes that were made in 2014/2015 and look forward to having you become more involved with your District. We have solidified some exciting and innovative programs that we think all ages of the community will enjoy. We’re already looking forward to 2017 so please stop in and feel free to offer your suggestions. We would love to hear from you and all ideas will be considered. Thank you.
I began this journey in June 2014 as the Assistant Executive Director with many ideas, however, I was not aware of the many challenges that faced the District at that time. After 60 days in this position, I realized that the District needed healing before it could become this community’s safe haven. This District holds a lot of history for many and was well-respected in the past. Commissioners wanted better services for all but, due to the disarray of funding and irresponsible spending, “better” was not part of our near future. I needed a different approach. Upon my appointment as Executive Director in July 2015, understanding the direction of the Board and obtaining a true visual of our finances, decreasing salaries and downsizing staff...we went to work! I asked the staff if they truly believed in what they were doing and wanted to give back—they needed to prove it! Our new accountant presented us with an austerity plan to follow, we made sacrifices, began to think outside the box and encouraged each other to stay focused. So here we are: our budget is now balanced with an increase of 25% profit, programs/events are in place, we have partnered with organizations and institutions that are eager to work with us, we have built and mended bridges that were once demolished, collaborated with the Village, Library, School Districts 89, 209 and PAEC and business owners who are stepping up as sponsors! All we need is YOU! Our future looks bright and I believe that by utilizing every moment of the day, staying fiscally responsible and focused, we will sustain and increase our purpose which is to serve all the residents of this Park District. for YOUTH & TEENS Youth Baseball and T-Ball Registration is now open! Registration going on now every Saturday, 10 am to 1 pm until May 14 at the Maywood Park District. Youth Baseball Training is held every Wednesday, 6 to 8 pm and Thursday from 6 to 7:30 pm. Youth baseball is for ages 7-13; T-ball is for ages 4-6. Fee is $35 per child. Girls Skills & Drills Basketball Camp Monday, July 18 through Friday, July 22 from Noon to 2:30 pm. Boys & Girls Skills and Drills on Saturdays Improve your game and get together every Saturday from Noon to 2 pm at the Maywood Multi-Purpose Building, 200 S. 5th Avenue for ages 8 and up. Fee is $35.

Atmosphere Tumbling Classes Tumbling classes for children ages 4-18 are held every Tuesday from 6 to 8 pm at the Maywood Park District. Learn the Game of Golf Only 24 spaces are available! Learn about these youth classes and how your child will be able to enter a host of golfing opportunities. For more details, contact the Maywood Park District at 344-4740. Fee is $25.
Youth Soccer Every Saturday from July 9 to August 6th, 10 to 11 am. Get in the game! Fee is just $15 per child. Discounts available for more than one youth registered per family. Sign up by calling 344-4740.
Professional Dance Classes The 2001 Professional Dance Company will be offering instruction in Modern, Jazz, Ballet, Praise, Poise and Confidence at Maywood Recreation Center every Saturday, 10 am until Noon for girls ages 5-10. Fee is $40 per month plus one low costume fee of $40. Only interested and dedicated applicants should register. THE MAYWOOD PARK DISTRICT & MAYWOOD VILLAGE TRUSTEES MELVIN LIGHTFORD AND RON RIVERS FISHING TRIPS Maywood youth ages 10-15 are invited to join us for a day of fresh air and fun as we head out to Cook County Forest Preserve District lakes to fish and enjoy the great outdoors! TRIP #1: Saturday, June 18. Bus leaves at 8 am for Wampum Lake-Grove 03 in Thornton, Illinois. TRIP #2: Saturday, July 23. Bus leaves at 8 am for NW Busse WoodsGrove 23 in Elk Grove Village. Fishing waivers must be completed prior to fishing dates. Youth younger than the age of 10 require supervision; youth age 16 and older will need to purchase a fishing license. Chaperones are always needed! Interested adults are encouraged to provide support for this popular program. All trips depart from Maywood Park District, 921 S. 9th Avenue, at 8 am and return later in the afternoon. Maywood Park District Summer Camp 2016 Registration is in progress NOW for children ages 5-12! Sign up for one or all three sessions. Camp includes: T-shirt, breakfast, lunch, snacks, games, arts and crafts, field trips, swimming and much more. The University of Illinois Extension Program will also demonstrate healthy eating habits and food prep at our camp! Camp hours are 9 am to 3 pm daily. Camp dates for 2016 are: Session 1: June 13 to July 1 • Session 2: July 5 to July 22 Session 3: July 25 to August 12 Camp fee is $165 per session for residents, $200 for non-residents. for YOUTH, TEENS & ADULTS FREE DBL Summer Basketball: 60% of spots filled already! Join Danka’s 1st Annual Summer Basketball Camp, June 20-24 at Proviso East High School. This camp will give 300 elementary-high school girls and boys ages 7-18 the opportunity to learn skills and teamwork. Get Fit with Candace T! Candace T will be teaching classes consisting of anaerobic, aerobics, pilates, dancing, strength training and more. This is a great class for anyone who wants to get healthy and get in shape. Programs are priced at $8 per class in three-month increments or pay-as-you-go for $10 each class. Soaring to New Heights Tutoring This great opportunity will begin in Fall 2016 at the District, 921 S. 9th Avenue on school days from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. Jayda James, an educator with School District 89, will facilitate this program. For more details, call 708-856-5335.
Youth Dances at the Park! Everyone ages 16-18, head over to Maywood Park District on May 14 and enjoy music and good times from 6:30 to 10 pm. Must present a school ID to enter. Charge is $5. Dance is sponsored by The Youth Factory, Community Essentials, Fresh Tone Productions, Maywood Family Dental and the Maywood Park District.

The purpose of the organization is to promote diversity and provide resources for teens and young adults and develop their talents and personal interests. Below is a list of upcoming COLORS events, along with co-sponsors: MOSIAK Community Entrepreneur Fair, July 22. Time and location to be announced. This MOSIAK event will give spotlight to budding and established entrepreneurs in Maywood and surrounding communities all for the purpose of inspiring unity and growth in the Village! DXXM Media Group. This Group is an eclectic collective of artists who aim to serve and promote local art in a multitude of neighborhoods through outreach partnerships and programs for teens and young adults. The MOSIAK. A collection of educated individuals who strive to create an opportunity for idle hands to become occupied by inspiration through the crafting and cultivating for their prospective careers. Juveniles: Know Your Rights Maywood Park District and Maywood Public Library Trustee Tanya Butler with Bill Morgan will present this program for ages 10-17. Learn how to think positive and use common sense in dealing with the law/justice system. Get involved and learn about LANOW (Legal Action Network of West Suburbs). Vision of Restoration (VOR) Peace Center Peace Center is a communityled restorative justice approach to youth crime and community conflict. It’s is a safe place where youth are welcome and supported in building healthy relationships, expressing themselves, addressing trauma and developing necessary skills. VOR is recruiting high school students to provide leadership and participate on the Peace Center Youth Council. Council meetings are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:30 to 5:30 pm at Maywood Park District. Juvenile Diversion System JDS consists of a cloud-based app and a website which provide the framework supporting collaboration between parents, schools, police, PLCs and care groups. The JDS framework serves not only as a central repository but provides the basis for diverting youth to resources based upon the continuous monitoring of behaviors and incidents shared between the collaborative group. for YOUTH, TEENS & ADULTS FREE Community Black History Club Youth and adults are invited to learn Black History by watching and discussing historical and current documentary films. The Club will meet on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month from 1:30 to 3:30 pm at Maywood Park District, 921 S. 9th Avenue. Refreshments will be available plus raffle prizes. Coming Soon: Urban Warriors! Environmental Stewards Needed Are you concerned about the following issues or want to gain a better understanding about: reducing your carbon footprint, reducing waste and pollution, creating renewable energy, lowering electricity usage, creating healthy neighborhoods, preserving natural habitats? Maywood Park District’s new Environmental Education Program series will tackle these and other topics. The series is for all ages and the goal is to “Reconnect Residents to the Outdoors.” Coordinated by Quen Williams and June Price, Urban Warriors will meet every Tuesday, June 7 through July 19, 6 to 7:30 pm in the Conference Room at 921 S. 9th Avenue. Series is free.
Silver Seniors Line Dance Class Calling all seniors! Come and learn the latest line dances at the Maywood Park District every Friday from 10 am to Noon. Cost is just $5 per class. Have some fun, get some exercise!
Maywood Crochet Classes FREE classes are held at the Maywood Park District on Mondays and Wednesdays, 10 am until Noon. New and experienced crocheters are welcome. Supplies needed include: Size G hook, yarn, tape measure, darning needle and safety pins or stitch markers.
Maywood Library Toastmasters Club Toastmasters meet every 2nd and 4th Monday at 7 pm at the Maywood Park District. Come and build your public speaking skills in a fun and motivating environment!
Benedictine University for Adult Education Start or finish your degree with a program designed for busy adults! Earn your Bachelor of Arts in Management, Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice, Masters in Business Administration locally! The first programs overview meeting is set for Thursday, May 12, 6 pm at Maywood Park District, 921 S. 9th Avenue. In partnership with Maywood Park District, Benedictine’s Bachelor of Arts in Management will be conveniently held in Maywood with minimum enrollment. The Answer Inc.: Spectrum University Spectrum University features Reading, Writing and Math courses taught by instructors that fully engage each student as an active learner. These additional education and skill training classes are for young adults impacted by Autism/Developmental Disorders for ages 18-40. Music-N-Me Exercise, Dance & Nutrition is a 10-week program for ages 18-40 who are impacted by Autism/Developmental Disorders. Participants receive the key elements in dancing, music, socialization, singing, nutrition, exercise and self-esteem. Participants will perform at The Answer Inc. Annual Gala in September.

The Loyola Pediatric Mobile Health Unit will be at Maywood Park District, 921 S. 9th Avenue in the rear parking lot, providing FREE physical exams and sports physicals for students in PreKindergarten through high school on Saturday, July 30, 9 am to 1 pm. Required paperwork includes DHS Health Exam form and IESA/IHSA Sports Physical Form. Children under 8 must be accompanied by parent or guardian.
