DREILÄNDENLAND

LOCATION: Aachen, Germany

YEAR: 2023

COURSE: TCR_Integrated Project III: Networked urban systems in Europe (SUPERLOCAL SOUTHERN DUTCH LIMBURG: Circular economy and crossborder mobility in Zuid-Limburg)

ROLE: 4 person design group

BREIF: The goal of the project is to propose spatial visions and scenario’s for a circular economy and cross-border mobility in the region of Zuid-Limburg and its neighboring areas. Participants are urged to work strategically towards social, economic and cultural nodes and zones while thinking about the meaning of borders. From the larger scale, the project will focus on the creation of thematically appropriate systems within an all-connecting linear superstructure. In the final step, focal points will be detailed, providing zoomin spots for a better understanding of the structure. ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

VISION Creating a tri-national governance arrangement for a specific region like ZuidLimburg would involve complex negotiations and agreements between the governments of the respective countries (Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium). 1. Diplomatic Engagement: Initiate diplomatic discussions and negotiations between the governments of Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium to explore the possibility of establishing a tri-national governance arrangement for Zuid-Limburg. 2. Joint Declaration or Treaty: Draft and negotiate a joint declaration or treaty that outlines the terms and conditions of the tri-national governance arrangement for Zuid-Limburg. 3. Cross-Border Institutions: Establish cross-border institutions or bodies that facilitate cooperation and decision-making among the three countries. These institutions could focus on areas such as economic development, infrastructure, environmental management, cultural exchange, and tourism promotion. 4. Local Participation: Engage with local communities, stakeholders, and organizations in Zuid-Limburg to ensure their voices are heard and their interests are represented in the negotiation process.

MASTER PLAN 1.Establish Cross-Border Collaboration: Foster strong partnerships and cooperation between municipalities, businesses, and stakeholders across the borders of Zuid Limburg. This collaboration will enable the sharing of knowledge, resources, and best practices to drive circular development initiatives. 2.Collaborative Treaty: Establish a comprehensive treaty that outlines the shared vision and responsibilities of the participating municipal clusters, ensuring a unified commitment to the 3CC approach (Circular Community, Connection, Conservation). 3.Shared Responsibilities: Allocate responsibilities among the municipal clusters, ensuring a balanced distribution of tasks related to circular practices, community engagement, connection enhancement, and conservation efforts. Emphasize collaboration and cooperation to maximize the collective impact. 4.Continuous Assessment: Regularly assess the activities and development within the municipal clusters, evaluating their progress in achieving the goals of circularity, community, connection, and conservation. Based on the assessment findings, adapt and refine the collaborative framework to optimize its effectiveness and address emerging challenges or opportunities.

PILOT PROJECTS The project follows activating existing infrastructure to enhance cross border activities. The proposals here are inspired by recent Parkstad IBA office opening doors for RWTH Aachen university. With the implementation of Dreilandenland treaty the future of Heerlen center might be re-imagined in such a way: (Phase 2)The Heerlen theater is no longer just a theater, it’s been transformed as a multi-functional center for the city of Heerlen. Here during the day time (9am-5pm) the spaces are re-imagined as classrooms or think-tank centers, where else for the rest of the evening the theater continues with the cultural activities. The open space is used for various activities such as setting up of vintage or farmer’s market or hosting spontaneous concerts to attract younger population for Aachen. (Phase 3) The imminent residential project has open doors to several activities by making their ground floor communal.

ROLE: Indivisual Design Project, Techlabs Düsseldorf

BREIF: The News Consumption Diversifier project addresses the critical issues surrounding modern news consumption. With the average time spent on traditional news sources plummeting from 22 minutes in 2011 to a mere 8 minutes today, the need for a platform like News Consumption Diversifier has never been more apparent. The project focuses on countering the lack of diversity in news outlets and the potential for users to be manipulated due to their limited exposure to different opinions.

UX/UI PORTFOLIO

DESIGN PROCESS Problem Statement: Users tend to lack political diversity, confining themselves to a select few news sources, making them prime targets for political manipulation. This situation is exacerbated by the rapid decline in average time spent on news consumption. Solution: The team proposed a multifaceted approach: 1. Diverse Content Exposure: Users are exposed to a wide range of news articles based on their interests, effectively broadening their perspectives. 2. Political Orientation Transparency: Users are informed about their political orientation, ensuring that they are not manipulated by the platform. 3. Balanced Selection: The platform emphasizes diversity in news sources to provide a wellrounded view of current events. Design Process: The project began with lowfidelity prototypes, facilitating the exploration of various design directions. This allowed for easy modification, reduced the risk of costly errors, and focused on core functionality. The problem statement and solution were continuously refined, guided by the question: "How might we increase the number of news sources an average user consumes?"

KEY FEATURES Findings: During UI testing, several key insights emerged: 1. Content Perception: Users exhibited varying opinions on the trustworthiness and relevance of the content. Some found it informative, while others perceived it as unguided or too complex. 2. Design Evaluation: Responses to the design were mixed, with some users finding it professional and user-friendly, while others found it confusing or even somber. 3. Concept Acceptance: Views on the project's placement in a larger news platform were divided. Some saw it as an integral component, while others believed it could function effectively as a standalone tool for raising awareness. Key Takeaways: 1. Deeper User Journey Understanding: The project provided valuable insights into the intricacies of user interaction with the UI. 2. Technical UX Design Skills: The team acquired a range of technical skills crucial for adaptable product design. 3. Lean Mindset Development: Recognizing the significance of small details and adopting an agile mindset were unexpected but vital aspects of the project.

User & Account Allows users to create a profile to create a more customised experience and save past orders

News Carousel Showcase of the various news without any affiliation from any kind of particular political party

Scroll Through This generates random news for users to consume

Save This allows users to save articles from which the app understands the algorithm for future outputs

BREIF: The project aims to create a hybrid space within a creative atmosphere where people are encouraged to connect, exchange and collaborate. CoEverything will be divided into two parts that is Co-Working and Co-Living Space: To design a collaborative hub with vibrant environments for formal and informal workspaces and to encourage social bonding sense of belonging with focus of interaction, in both living and working environments so as to achieve co-everything. ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

FORM DEVELOPMENT The general idea is to use the same module to form different space volume for various functions. A successful communal space will have the facilities that able to fulfil occupants' needs. Without active daily users, it'll lost its meaning to be built. Thus a flexible planning is a key to fulfil different group of communities in this project. Occupants will be the one who decide what kind of facilities they need in this vertical neighbourhood. They will express themselves through the module, by sign boards, facade artworks, and materials. This approach will gives an unique identity to each and every vertical neighbourhood.

RESEARCH PAPER ON URBANIZATION- ARCHITECTURAL THEORY

In an Urbanized city, public transport is a very important and key factor. Having an safe, reliable and working public transportation system is a must and its like the back-bone of any city. In this new generation, where technology is being developing and improving, everything can be done with its help. Hence there comes a new form of eco-logically sustained, healthy and low emission based public transportation methods. And the number one thing that matches and comes in all of those categories is ‘BICYCLES’. Bikes were used from a very long time in the history but using the bikes with the help of technology was something that could be done in the current age. Bike sharing programs was something that was never seen before. When these programs started in the early 1950’s, a group named ‘Provo’ placed 50 white painted bikes in the city of Amsterdam unlocked. While that was the start of these kind of programs. Later came ‘Station generated’ bike sharing programs which was nothing but a series of bikes docked and locked to a designated point and after people paying for their sessions the bikes were unlocked and ready to use. Then came along ‘Dockless’ bike sharing system which was nothing similar to its previous generation it was mainly technology based where the user would have to have a particular app from which they could scan the barcode on the bikes which would indeed unlock them and the user would also be able locate these easily with that app. Understanding both of them and their flaws in this paper and also focusing upon the unlicensed Dockelss systems which has a huge impact on public spaces and security.

VIRTUAL REALITY

PANKTI MEHTA

RESEARCH PAPER ON SENSES AND EMOTIONS- ELECTIVES

The paper VIRTUAL REALITY (SENSES AND EMOTIONS) talks about Virtual reality is an artificial environment that is created with software and presented to the user in such a way that the user suspends belief and accepts it as a real environment. On a computer, virtual reality is primarily experienced through two of the five senses: sight and sound. The simplest form of virtual reality is a 3-D image that can be explored interactively at a personal computer, usually by manipulating keys or the mouse so that the content of the image moves in some direction or zooms in or out. More sophisticated efforts involve such approaches as wrap-around display screens, actual rooms augmented with wearable computers, and haptics devices that let you feel the display images. Virtual reality can be divided into: The simulation of a real environment for training and education. The development of an imagined environment for a game or interactive story. The Virtual Reality Modelling Language VRML) allows the creator to specify images and the rules for their display and interaction using textual language statements. It has slowly and steadily emerged in many different aspects of our lives. As virtual reality is all about experiencing & simulation, there can be endless opportunities and developments in it. VIRTUAL REAITY: Computer Generated Simulation 3D Image and Environment Can be interactive using special equipment's. This technology, with its unique ability to simulate complex, real situations and contexts, offers researchers unprecedented opportunities to investigate human behaviour in well controlled designs in the laboratory. Being by its nature virtual, i. e., simulation of reality.
