Welcome to the third annual Common Ground Gelbvieh Bull Sale 2024.

First we would like to thank everyone who made our previous sales successful. Each member of the Common Ground group is genuinely appreciative of those who browsed our catalogue, inquired, visited, viewed our bulls, registered and bought. Your confidence in our breeding programs to improve your operation is our motivation.

We can look forward to 2024 and beyond with optimism in the future of the cattle industry. Beef demand is strong, improved crop and pasture conditions have contributed to increased feed supplies with strong feeder cattle markets that have producers ready to start herd rebuilding.

The Common Ground Gelbvieh Bull Sale will once again offer for your consideration bulls that have generations of selection behind them. This will include performance bulls with ample frame and muscle to add value to your feeders. There will also be calving ease bulls that give you added peace during your calving season. All these bulls will carry the Gelbvieh influence which will produce replacements you are proud of with strong maternal traits. These are fertile, sound, easy doing bulls out of mama cows with proven lineages mated to breed leading sires. The kind of genetics you will want to add to your herd. The genetics that will carry you through the next cattle cycle with all its opportunities.

We invite you to stop by our farms to view the bulls and have a visit. These bulls will also be available for viewing at Olds Auction Mart from noon, Thursday, March 14th through 6pm, Friday, March 15th. EPD Information

EPD DEFINITIONS

Listed below are the definitions of Canadian Gelbvieh Association EPDs and the units in which they are published.

Maternal Traits

Calving Ease Direct (CE): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd.

Milk (Milk): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight.

Growth Traits

Birth Weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf.

Weaning Weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.

Yearling Weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.

Cowlick Ranch is located north of Olds, AB. We have used Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls in our commercial cow calf operation for many years and know first hand the benefits that Gelbvieh can add to a cattle operation. We feel we have put together a set of bulls that are relevant to the cattle industry’s demands. In 1998 we moved our calving to the early season grazing period of May/June. This has helped us focus on forage based genetics for real world efficiency and performance.

7T Cattle is located on the southwest side of Sylvan Lake and east of Ponoka in the Chain Lakes area. I purchased my first Gelbvieh as a 4H project and have been raising Gelbvieh since. Some of the herd’s genetics still go back to my first Gelbvieh heifer. I calve in May/June and concentrate on a grass/forage based operation. The bulls are located at the Sylvan Lake farm. CLR Leo 5L is a bull that we think very highly of and the type we are striving to raise. Leo checks a lot of boxes to be an elite herdsire and has built a bit of a reputation already as this past November he placed second at the Gelbvieh People’s Choice Bull Futurity event! He’s soft made, has tremendous length, moves well, and has natural muscle, and one can’t ignore his actual WW of 900lbs! He’s backed by an incredible young cow, DDN0164H, a cow we purchased out of “The Gathering” from the Nelson Gelbvieh program; she’s made a mark in our program as a very elite cow very quickly. A maternal sister to Leo was the high selling bred heifer at our female sale this past fall as well. If you’re looking for a Gelbvieh bull that will be a difference maker, check this guy out. Here is an extremely powerful, dark cherry red SLC Viper 59GET son. This guy has been fun to watch grow. He shows the incredible performance and growth that the Gelbvieh breed has to offer the cattle industry. He was the heaviest bull at weaning with an actual weaning weight of 925lbs straight off of moms milk. He has maintained the most powerful bull in the pen weighing 1300lbs on December 26th. CLR Luke 39L has incredible scrotal development for a yearling and will be sure to get out and settle some cows for you and give you a calf crop you’ll be very proud of.

When Sunberry Valley Ranch offered us the opportunity to purchase embryos out of U2 Township 17G and CK Xanadu 71X, we knew we better jump on those. Township was the $130000 high selling angus bull at the 2020 U2 sale, a very elite herdsire in the angus world! We knew that a bull like that on Gelbvieh cows, especially the likes of CK 71X would make for phenomenal balancer cattle. CLR Liam 4L ET is a stout made, moderate framed herdsire prospect. He will be an incredible female maker; we have 2 full ET sisters to this bull and they are the top heifers in our replacement pen. He is very correct in his structure, nice front end, great hair, and deep middled. An elite balancer bull prospect here.

We could pretty well say all the same things for this guy as we did for his full brother. CLR Levi 57LET does posses more length of spine then his full ET brother. He’s a great herd sire prospect that’s going to look very impressive as a mature bull. He had an impressive weaning weight and has been one of our best gaining bulls since on feed as well. The Township ET sons all have incredible scrotal development, a trait we could see very early out on pasture this summer. CLR Larson 63L is an impressive balancer bull. He’s dark red, has tons of hair, and carries himself on a good big foot. He had a maternal brother sell in our sale last year to AKS Gelbvieh. His dam is one of our top producing cows that gives us something good every year. Another bonus to this bull is his temperament; he is so quiet and easy to work with, one of the great traits of the Gelbvieh breed. His sire was a balancer ET bull we raised and was one of the easiest fleshing natural muscled bulls I had seen. Larson will sire an impressive set of calves with natural muscle and easy fleshing ability as well.

This guy caught our eye from a very early age. His Dam CLR75J did a phenomenal job at her first go. One has to appreciate the clean front end of this bull, his nice skull shape, and his tremendous hair coat. He has great rib shape, good bone structure all throughout, and a good big hip, which he developed at a very young age! His sire, ULL Flint 14F is a special bull in the breed. Flint females are known to be moderate attractive females with near perfect udders, this is all no surprise being backed by ULL50B the donor Dam at Unger Land & Livestock. CLR Lenny 52L is the real deal and could be used on a variety of cow types, and even has enough calve ease to be able to be used on heifers too.

Here’s another elite herdsire prospect: a homozygous polled and red carrier bull out of two black parents. We purchased RWGW Hashtag H447 to get some performance in our calf crop, and he more than exceeded those expectations on his first set of calves. His bulls and heifers definitely were our highest weaning weight sire group. You’ll see similar traits in all 3 Hashtag sons we have on offer and one really has to appreciate the mass and power each one possesses. CLR 41L’s dam JM15F, is a very productive SLC Velocity daughter. The females from this guy are sure to be impressive. Power, performance, and maternal are what CLR Lincoln 41L will be known for!

In a business where you get paid by weight, bulls like this get us excited. Another powerful Hashtag son out of a beautiful moderate JM Fern 32F cow. This guy had a very impressive weaning weight, weaning off at 780lbs. Lebron is a deep bodied, soft made, big volume black bull, and yet with all that power, he is cleaned sheathed and has a nice skull shape. He carriers himself on an awesome big foot, he has a great temperament, and an excellent hair coat. This guy will be such a powerhouse and an incredible looking mature bull, a beef bull in the making here.

This bull is a moderate herd sire prospect with a dark, solid foot and great hair coat. His sire is the former National Champion bull, Road Trip 103B, who has left us with some outstanding females in our program. 11L’s dam is a top end Flint daughter who did an awesome job raising her first calf. Our best cow families, ULL 50B and ULL 57D, are fused together in this exciting young cow. We feel ULL Road Trip 11L will produce the right kind of steers for the industry today and should fill the replacement pen with herd building heifers.

Here is a well put together black 75% bull, who carries himself well on a solid footed base. He has a nice temperament and good hair, as well. Out of our best balancer cow, ULL 71E, who traces back to an outstanding proven Angus sire, Resource, this cow raised 13L to a weaning weight of 818lbs Sept. 1st on momma’s milk and grass. We are steadily building a cow family line from this female. An interesting note that this bull’s sire, CLR 15J, was sold in this sale 2 years ago. We had a chance to use him, as his pedigree was packed with outstanding genetics, including FRL Dragon 104D, a bull that sold for $30,000 and SLC Reba, a national champion female who has produced some high sellers, too. Cowlick Ranch and we have the full sister to Jagr 15J and she’s proven to be darn good! Genetics are stacked on ULL 13L, so feel comfortable to add him to your sire line up this spring. He should add performance to the calf crop in the fall.

Gunmetal is in a class by himself. AJN 13K is a dark smoke colored bull is out of a prolific dam. He is structurally correct with muscle mass & volume. AJN 13K does carry the diluter gene which increases the probability of his offspring being silver, smoke or tan.

• Bulls will sell in a published sale order, with individual sequential closing times. This means you will not spend extra time waiting for the sale to end.

• At closing, there is extended bidding with a two-minute countdown per lot.

• Use your “watch list” to monitor interested lots and bid on lots.

• Find your best available internet connection and cell phone service.

• Do not wait until the final seconds to bid.

• Use the “Max Bid” feature. This will automatically increase your bid by set increments until your maximum amount has been reached.

Bidding Close and Follow Up: Sale close out will begin at 7 PM and close out as per sale order. Following the competition of the sale, a member of the Common Ground Bull Sale/Rosehill Auction team will contact you to arrange your desired method of payment. Options include E transfer, cheque, cash, debit, direct deposit, or credit card. Your credit card on file will NOT be automatically processed for any purchases. All bulls sell under the standard terms and conditions set forth by the Canadian Gelbvieh Association. All cattle sell with appropriate health requirements, current vaccinations and a current satisfactory breeding soundness exam. Bulls returning to the consignors farm must be insured. We stand behind the bulls we sell, if a bull fails to be a satisfactory breeder or unable to physically service cows or heifers we require him returned to us, and we will replace him with one of equal value or with a full credit minus salvage value in next year’s sale.

Free delivery in a 300 KM radius and a shared cost to central points past 300 km, we will try our very best to deliver them right to your yard. Delivery date is at the seller’s convenience prior to May 1, and bulls staying after May 1 will be kept for the cost of current feed charges.
