County of Maui Pure Genius

Water Recycling Overview Proposed Replacement of the Kahului Wastewater Treatment Facility The Kahului wastewater treatment plant was built in the 1970s and subsequently expanded and improved to meet new growth and environmental standards. The facility has a rated capacity of 8 million gallons per day, and currently treats approximately 5 million gallons per day that subsequently discharges treated effluent through injection wells. The plant is not capable of producing recycled water without significant capital investment, and the facility requires capital improvements to maintain the longevity of the infrastructure. The facility sits on approximately 35 acres on the north side of the Island of Maui, within 100 feet of the Pacific Ocean, and close to the Kahului International Airport. Of other importance, the facility is 3 feet above sea level and therefore at risk of Tsunami damage.
