Considering the remote locations of many safari lodges, chances are you'll be hopping onto small bush planes to reach them. For a smoother journey, we recommend opting for soft-sided luggage like duffel bags. These are more versatile in the limited cargo spaces of these planes.
While some planes can handle bags with one hard side (like rolling duffels with extendable handles), others may specifically require true duffels. To avoid surprises, check the baggage rules with <CX name> before packing for your trip.
It's also essential to keep in mind the weight restrictions imposed by these small aircraft. Southern Africa typically allows 20 kilograms (44 pounds) per person, while in East Africa, it's 15 kilograms (33 pounds) per person.
Sun protection is vital on safari, so a hat with UPF 50 and mesh ventilation is a must. Binoculars are handy for distant sightings, but check if your safari lodge provides them to save luggage space.
Ensure skin protection with a smooth sunscreen (SPF 50) that's ideal for regular reapplication. Combat mosquito-borne diseases with Picaridinbased insect repellent – effective and gentle on the skin.

Opt for cool fabrics like cotton or moisture-wicking synthetics. Quick-dry materials are ideal, especially if you plan on doing laundry during your safari – most safari lodges offer laundry services.
WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU PACK Prepare to wear layers on your morning game drives. It can be rather cool when you hit the road after sunrise, but can warm up very quickly.
Opt for a soft-sided bag, like a duffel, for easy stowing in bush planes. If airports are a concern, choose a wheeled duffel for hassle-free transport.
Avoid overpacking clothes; many safari camps offer laundry services. Save space for essentials like your camera, sun hat, and shoes. And leave room for souvenirs!
