Pressio is a versatile display typeface designed by Max Philips at Signal Type Foundry. New York-born but Dublin-based, Max Phillips is the proprietor of the Signal Type Foundry & Drawing Office. A former novelist and toy designer, he now designs for clients like Bewley’s, CBS, Christie’s, Citi, FAO Schwarz, and Trinity College Dublin, as well as collaborating with studios and agencies in Ireland and abroad.

Signal is a Dublin-based foundry and drawing office specialising in type design, lettering, and typographic branding. Their practice is driven by collaboration and based on over thirty years of branding experience.

← THE PRESSIO FAMILY

Pressio is an expressive and versatile display typeface containing 20 styles in five weights (light, regular, medium, bold and black) and four widths (x-compressed, compressed, condensed and regular). The diversity of styles provide a broad range of expression.

Pressio is a study in doing things backwards.

First, Max began with the weight that’s usually drawn last: the ultra-compressed black. This was squashed down vertically in increments to make the compressed, condensed, and regular widths, then hollowed like a dugout canoe to produce the lighter weights. The narrower bold cuts are inspired by the great mid-century skyline sanses. The widest cuts are stark, idiosyncratic, and intense.

Pressio contains a number of distinctive characteristics which enable it to have a diverse tone of voice. Forms are strict and modular. The x-height is high. Curves are subtly superelliptical, and square counters add crispness.

Stylistic alternates are available to round some of the unexpectedly sharp corners of letters like S, s, and a, as well as alternate letterforms for j and r. A full range of diacritics provides support for over 130 languages, making Pressio the perfect international display typeface. Case-sensitive punctuation and delimiters are included.

As Pressio is primarily a display typeface, it works best at large scale. The modular shapes of the letterforms gives Pressio a bold, confident voice. Pressio demands attention, and is therefore ideally used as a headline display font in tandem to a reading typeface.
