Welcome, Rattlers! This day could not come fast enough. From the moment we realized that 2026 would mark the 50th Anniversary of the first enshrinement of the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame, our committee has approached this celebration with tremendous excitement—and, admittedly, a little nervousness. We understood the magnitude of the moment and the responsibility of giving 50 years of history, excellence and Rattler greatness its just due. Tonight, we are proud to share with you the result of that effort. Our committee challenged itself to make this celebration worthy of the men and women whose names and accomplishments have helped define Florida A&M University. We searched far and wide for ideas, traditions and special touches that would allow us to present the very best in an elegant celebration befitting the kings and queens who proudly represented the Orange and Green. Florida A&M University has an extraordinary athletic legacy. Our Hall of Fame includes athletes, coaches, administrators and supporters whose accomplishments can stand alongside those of any institution in this country. To help preserve that history—and celebrate it on this historic 50th Anniversary—has been an honor and a responsibility we have not taken lightly. Tonight, we also welcome seven new members into this distinguished family: Attorney Ben Crump (Supporter), William Evers (Football), Sean Giliam (Football), Judith Kibii (Track & Field), Leroy Long (Tennis), Tyrone McGriff (Football) and Brandi Tatum-Fedrick (Coach). Together, they comprise our Golden Class, and after tonight, they will don their green jackets and take their rightful place among the legends who preceded them. We are also privileged to recognize two outstanding FAMU alumni as recipients of the Hansel E. Tookes, Sr. Trailblazer Award: Four-Time World Long Drive Golf Champion Maurice Allen and Atlanta Falcons Cheerleader Coach Dr. Chato Waters-Hendrix. This prestigious honor is among the most selective awards presented by the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame, recognizing Rattlers whose achievements have broken barriers and carried the FAMU name far beyond our campus. As we celebrate tonight, we also remember the visionaries who established this Hall of Fame 50 years ago, those who sustained it through the decades, and every Hall of Famer whose accomplishments created the legacy we have been entrusted to preserve. Fifty years. Generations of greatness. One extraordinary Rattler legacy. On behalf of the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame Committee, welcome to the 50th Anniversary Enshrinement Celebration of the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame. Sit back, enjoy this historic evening, and celebrate the athletes, coaches, administrators and supporters who helped build the legacy of the No. 1 Public HBCU in America. Welcome Home Rattlers!

Benjamin “Ben” Crump, Esq.
SUPPORTER
Attorney Benjamin “Ben” Crump has long been a devoted supporter of Florida A&M University Athletics. For more than a decade, Crump and his law firm, Ben Crump Law, have ranked among the department’s most dependable donors, contributing more than $100,000 to FAMU Athletics. Their support includes a direct investment in the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame through the Crump Gallery project. Crump continues to support FAMU Athletics and the university as a dedicated advocate and philanthropic partner.
William “Petey” Evers
FOOTBALL
William Evers was a four-year starter and First-Team All-MEAC cornerback who recorded 10 career interceptions at FAMU under head coach Ken Riley. A native of Cairo, Georgia, Evers developed into one of the Rattlers’ premier shutdown defenders. Following his collegiate career, he signed with the Atlanta Falcons and later played professionally in the Canadian Football League. A longtime law enforcement professional, Evers currently serves as Deputy Chief of the FAMU Police Department.
Sean Gilliam
BASEBALL
A two-sport scholarship athlete, Sean Gilliam contributed to the football program as a running back, scoring two touchdowns in 1988, while simultaneously excelling on FAMU’s baseball team. In 1989, he set a MEAC single-season batting average record at .448, a mark that stood for more than 35 years. He also held the school home-run record (15) for over three decades. Gilliam was selected by the New York Yankees in the 1989 MLB Draft, spending seven years in the minor league system.
Judith Kibii
CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK & FIELD One of the most decorated distance runners in FAMU history, Judith Kibii arrived on campus in 2014 and immediately became a cornerstone of the program. She earned All-MEAC honors ten times, appeared twice on the Commissioner’s All-Academic Team, and served as the featured athlete on the 2018 All-Academic roster. Kibii helped FAMU win multiple MEAC Cross-Country Championships, extending the record streak to seven titles (2012–2018), following teammates Cynthia Chelelgo and Effiey Kosgei.

Leroy Long
TENNIS
Leroy Long entered Florida A&M University in 1964 and immediately became the No. 1 tennis player, a position he maintained for four straight years. In his freshman season, he led the team to a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Co-Championship, followed by three consecutive SIAC championships from 1965–1968. In 1968, Long won both the Singles and Doubles SIAC Championships, bringing home four total trophies during his FAMU career.
Tyrone McGriff, Jr.
FOOTBALL
A dominant defensive end, Tyrone McGriff, Jr. recorded over 160 tackles, 14 sacks, and multiple national statistical rankings, including #5 in forced fumbles (2005) and #4 in fumble recoveries (2004). He earned All-American and All-Conference honors in 2005 and 2006, was named team MVP in 2007, and remarkably played his final two seasons through major injuries, declining surgery to continue competing for FAMU. He also comes from a special lineage as his father Tyrone McGriff, Sr. is also in the hall.
Brandi Tatum-Fedrick
COACH
Brandi Tatum-Fedrick becomes the second inductee related to FAMU cheerleading and the first coach. She guided the Rattler Cheer squad for over 20 years, coaching them through the MEAC and migrating to the SWAC. She coached the Rattler Cheer squad to the last MEAC Championship in 2016 before they discontinued the competition. She would transition the FAMU cheer squad to national cheerleading championships where they have made their mark with several top finishes.

The History of the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame
Speak of Florida A&M University, and one immediately thinks of an institution renowned for academic excellence and an equally distinguished tradition in athletics. FAMU’s proud athletic legacy was built over generations by countless individuals on the gridiron, baseball diamond, track and field, and other arenas of competition. Some received widespread recognition, while others remained unsung. Yet all were determined, gifted, creative and united in their commitment to their university and their respective sports. When Hansel E. Tookes Sr. became Florida A&M’s athletic director in 1973, he recognized a significant void—the university lacked a permanent way to honor the many individuals whose contributions to FAMU Athletics and the broader world of sports had been truly remarkable. That realization inspired Tookes to establish the Florida A&M Sports Hall of Fame.
HOF Event Program.indd 8
“We have produced, or have been touched by, many great athletes and contributors to sports,” Tookes said. “Our sportsmen have been honored throughout the state, the nation and internationally. Now it is time we recognize these individuals in a permanent manner.” Tookes believed the creation of the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame would provide the university with a lasting institution through which it could honor its distinguished sons and daughters, following the traditions of other established halls of fame. Then-FAMU President Benjamin L. Perry Jr. embraced the opportunity for the university to recognize its own and gave Tookes his approval to move forward. Tookes assembled a committee whose members possessed a deep understanding of FAMU, its traditions and its athletic history. He also wanted the committee to represent the university’s various eras and to consist of individuals who would remain accessible and actively involved. The original 1976 committee consisted of Sylvester L. Beasley, George Brown, Harold Clack, Rudolph Givens, Robert P. Griffin,
9/14/26 6:22 AM
Alfred Lawson Jr., Philip J. Nelson, Robert L. Rollins and Ezekiel Sims. Selecting the inaugural class of the Florida A&M Sports Hall of Fame was no easy task. From the beginning, however, committee members agreed on one fundamental criterion: Each inductee must represent the highest standard of excellence within his or her area of contribution. The committee also determined that enshrinement would recognize three essential areas of athletic achievement—the athlete, the coach and the supporter. Many deserving candidates were nominated and carefully considered during deliberations that required considerable thought and time. Ultimately, those selected were widely recognized as representing the pinnacle of athletic excellence. Since its establishment, nearly 300 individuals have been inducted into the Florida A&M Sports Hall of Fame. Its membership includes some of the most celebrated figures in American sports.
