Al Venerato Fratello Monsignor Francesco Lambiasi, Vescovo di Rimini.

To my Venerable Brother Bishop Francesco Lambiasi of Rimini.

Desidero rivolgere il mio cordiale saluto a Lei, agli organizzatori e a tutti i partecipanti al Meeting per l’Amicizia fra i Popoli, giunto ormai alla XXXIII edizione. Il tema scelto quest’anno - «La natura dell’uomo è rapporto con l’infinito» - risulta particolarmente significativo in vista dell’ormai imminente inizio dell’«Anno della fede», che ho voluto indire in occasione del Cinquantesimo anniversario dell’apertura del Concilio Ecumenico Vaticano II.

I would like to address my cordial greeting to you, to the organizers and to all the participants in the Meeting for Friendship Among Peoples that is now being held for the 33rd time. The theme chosen this year is particularly meaningful — “By nature, man is relation to the infinite” — in view of the now imminent Year of Faith which I have chosen to proclaim for the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council.

Parlare dell’uomo e del suo anelito all’infinito significa innanzitutto riconoscere il suo rapporto costitutivo con il Creatore. L’uomo è una creatura di Dio. Oggi questa parola – creatura – sembra quasi passata di moda: si preferisce pensare all’uomo come ad un essere compiuto in se stesso e artefice assoluto del proprio destino. La considerazione dell’uomo come creatura appare «scomoda» poiché implica un riferimento essenziale a qualcosa d’altro o meglio, a Qualcun altro – non gestibile dall’uomo – che entra a definire in modo essenziale la sua identità; un’identità relazionale, il cui primo dato è la dipendenza originaria e ontologica da Colui che ci ha voluti e ci ha creati. Eppure questa dipendenza, da cui l’uomo moderno e contemporaneo tenta di affrancarsi, non solo non nasconde o diminuisce, ma rivela in modo luminoso la grandezza e la dignità suprema dell’uomo, chiamato alla vita per entrare in rapporto con la Vita stessa, con Dio.

Speaking of man and of his desire for the infinite means first of all recognizing his constitutive relationship with the Creator. Man is a creature of God. Today this word — creature — seems almost to have gone out of fashion.

People prefer to think of the human being as a being complete in himself and the absolute master of his own destiny. Viewing man as a creature seems “reductive”, because it involves an essential reference to something else or rather, Someone else — who cannot be managed by man — who comes into it to define his identity in an essential way; a relational identity, whose first given is his original and ontological dependence on the One who wanted and created us. Yet this dependence, from which modern and contemporary men and women seek to free themselves, not only does not conceal or diminish but rather reveals clearly the greatness and supreme dignity of the human being, called to life to enter into a relationship with Life itself, with God.

Dire che «la natura dell’uomo è rapporto con l’infinito» significa allora dire che ogni persona è stata creata perché possa entrare in dialogo con Dio, con l’Infinito. All’inizio della storia del mondo, Adamo ed Eva sono frutto di un atto di amore di Dio, fatti a sua immagine e somiglianza, e la loro vita e il loro rapporto con il Creatore coincidevano: «Dio creò l’uomo a sua immagine; a immagine di Dio lo creò: maschio e femmina li creò» (Gen, 1,27). E il peccato originale ha la sua radice ultima proprio nel sottrarsi dei nostri progenitori a questo rapporto costitutivo, nel voler mettersi al posto di Dio, nel credere di poter fare senza di Lui. Anche dopo il peccato, però, rimane nell’uomo il desiderio struggente di questo dialogo, quasi una firma impressa col fuoco nella sua anima e nella sua carne dal Creatore stesso. Il Salmo 63 [62] ci aiuta a entrare nel cuore di questo discorso: «O Dio, tu sei il mio Dio, dall’aurora io ti cerco, ha sete di te l’anima mia, desidera te la mia carne, in terra arida, assetata, senz’acqua» (v. 2). Non solo la mia anima, ma ogni fibra della mia carne è fatta per trovare la sua pace, la sua realizzazione in Dio. E questa tensione è incancellabile nel cuore dell’uomo: anche quando si rifiuta o si nega Dio, non scompare la sete di infinito che abita l’uomo. Inizia invece una ricerca affannosa e sterile, di «falsi infiniti» che possano soddisfare almeno per un momento. La sete dell’anima e l’anelito della carne di cui parla il Salmista non si possono eliminare, così l’uomo, senza saperlo, si protende alla ricerca dell’Infinito, ma in direzioni sbagliate: nella droga, in una sessualità vissuta in modo disordinato, nelle tecnologie totalizzanti, nel successo ad ogni costo, persino in forme ingannatrici di religiosità. Anche le cose buone, che Dio ha creato come strade che conducono a Lui, non di rado corrono il rischio di essere assolutizzate e divenire così idoli che si sostituiscono al Creatore.

Riconoscere di essere fatti per l’infinito significa percorrere un cammino di purificazione da quelli che abbiamo chiamato «falsi infiniti», un cammino di conversione del cuore e della mente. Occorre sradicare tutte le false promesse di infinito che seducono l’uomo e lo rendono schiavo. Per ritrovare veramente se stesso e la propria identità, per vivere all’altezza del proprio essere, l’uomo deve

At the beginning of the world’s history Adam and Eve were the result of an act of love by God, made in his image and likeness, and their life and relationship with the Creator coincided: “God created man in his own image; in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them” (Gen 1:27).

Moreover original sin is ultimately rooted precisely in our first parents’ evasion from this constitutive relationship, in their desire to put themselves in God’s place, in their belief that they could do without him. Even after their sin, however, human beings are left with this all-consuming desire for this dialogue, almost as if the Creator himself had branded their soul and their flesh with it.

Psalm 63[62] helps us penetrate to the heart of this subject. “O God, you are my God, I seek you, my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where no water is” (v. 2). Not only my soul but every fibre of my flesh is made to find its peace, its fulfilment, in God. And this aspiration in the human heart is indelible: even when God is rejected or denied, the thirst for the infinite that dwells in men and women is not slaked. Instead a frantic, sterile search for “false infinites” begins, that can satisfy them at least for a moment. The thirst of the soul and the longing of the flesh the Psalmist speaks of cannot be eliminated. Therefore human beings, unbeknownst to themselves, are reaching out for the Infinite but in mistaken directions: in drugs, in a disorderly form of sexuality, in totalizing technologies, in success at every cost and even in deceptive forms of piety. Even the good things which God has created, such as paths that lead to him, often risk being absolutized, and thereby becoming idols that replace the Creator.

Recognizing that we have been made for the infinite means taking the route of purification from what we have called “false infinites”, a way of conversion of heart and mind. We must uproot all the false promises of the infinite that

È interessante notare come san Paolo, nella Lettera ai Romani, veda il contrario della schiavitù non tanto nella libertà, ma nella figliolanza, nell’aver ricevuto lo Spirito Santo che rende figli adottivi e che ci permette di gridare a Dio: «Abbà! Padre!» (cfr 8,15).

L’Apostolo delle genti parla di una schiavitù «cattiva»: quella del peccato, della legge, delle passioni della carne. A questa, però, non contrappone l’autonomia, ma la «schiavitù di Cristo» (cfr 6,16-22), anzi egli stesso si definisce: «Paolo, servo di Cristo Gesù» (1,1). Il punto fondamentale, quindi, non è eliminare la dipendenza, che è costitutiva dell’uomo, ma indirizzarla verso Colui che solo può rendere veramente liberi.

A questo punto però sorge una domanda. Non è forse strutturalmente impossibile all’uomo vivere all’altezza della propria natura? E non è forse una condanna questo anelito verso l’infinito che egli avverte senza mai poterlo soddisfare totalmente? Questo interrogativo ci porta direttamente al cuore del cristianesimo. L’Infinito stesso, infatti, per farsi risposta che l’uomo possa sperimentare, ha assunto una forma finita. Dall’Incarnazione, dal momento in cui in Verbo si è fatto carne, è cancellata l’incolmabile distanza tra finito e infinito: il Dio eterno e infinito ha lasciato il suo Cielo ed è entrato nel tempo, si è immerso nella finitezza umana. Nulla allora è banale o insignificante nel cammino della vita e del mondo. L’uomo è fatto per un Dio infinito che è diventato carne, che ha assunto la nostra umanità per attirarla alle altezze del suo essere divino.

Scopriamo così la dimensione più vera dell’esistenza umana, quella a cui il Servo di Dio Luigi Giussani continuamente richiamava: la vita come vocazione.

Ogni cosa, ogni rapporto, ogni gioia, come anche ogni difficoltà, trova la sua ragione ultima nell’essere occasione di rapporto con l’Infinito, voce di Dio che continuamente ci chiama e ci invita ad alzare lo sguardo, a scoprire nell’adesione a Lui la realizzazione piena della nostra umanità. «Ci hai fatti per te – scriveva Agostino – e il nostro cuore è inquieto finché non riposa in te» (Confessioni I, 1,1). Non dobbiamo avere paura di quello che Dio ci chiede attraverso le circostanze della vita, fosse anche la dedizione di tutto noi stessi in una forma particolare di seguire e imitare Cristo nel sacerdozio o nella vita religiosa. Il Signore, chiamando alcuni a vivere totalmente di Lui, richiama tutti a riconoscere l’essenza della propria natura di essere umani: fatti per l’infinito. E Dio ha a cuore la nostra felicità, la nostra piena realizzazione umana. Chiediamo, allora, di entrare e rimanere nello sguardo della fede che ha caratterizzato i Santi, per poter scoprire i semi di bene che il Signore sparge lungo il cammino della nostra vita e aderire con gioia alla nostra vocazione.

Nell’auspicare che questi brevi pensieri possano essere di aiuto per coloro che prendono parte al Meeting, assicuro la mia vicinanza nella preghiera ed auguro che la riflessione di questi giorni possa introdurre tutti nella certezza e nella gioia della fede.

A Lei, Venerato Fratello, ai responsabili e agli organizzatori della manifestazione, come pure a tutti i presenti, ben volentieri imparto una particolare Benedizione Apostolica.

seduce men and women and enslave people. Truly to rediscover ourselves and our identity, to live our dignity, we must return to recognizing that we are creatures, dependent on God. The possibility of a truly free and full life is linked to recognizing this dependence — which in our inmost depths is the joyous discovery of being God’s children. It is interesting to note that in his Letter to the Romans St Paul sees the contrary of slavery not so much as freedom as, rather, sonship, having received the Holy Spirit that makes us adoptive sons and enables us to cry to God “Abba! Father!” (8:15).

The Apostle to the Gentiles speaks of an “evil” slavery: the slavery of sin, of the law, of the passions of the flesh. Yet he does not counter this with autonomy but with “being slaves of Christ”, (cf. 6:16-22). On the contrary, he describes himself as “Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ” (1:1). The fundamental point, therefore, is not to eliminate dependence which is a constitutive part of the human being, but to direct it to the One who alone can truly set us free. At this point, however, a question arises. Is it not perhaps structurally impossible for human beings to measure up to the loftiness of their nature?

This question brings us directly to the heart of Christianity.

In fact, the Infinite One took a finite form in order to make himself a response that the human being could experience. The unbridgeable abyss between the finite and the infinite was filled from the Incarnation, from the moment in which the Word became flesh; the eternal and infinite God left his heaven and entered into time, he immersed himself in human finiteness. Nothing, therefore, is trivial or insignificant in the journey of life and of the world. Men and women are made for an infinite God who became flesh, who took our humanity to uplift it to the heights of his divine being.

We thus discover the truest dimension of human existence to which the Servant of God Luigi Giussani ceaselessly called people: life as a vocation.

Everything, every relationship, every joy, as well as every difficulty, finds its ultimate reason in being an opportunity for a relationship with the Infinite, God’s voice that continually calls us and invites us to look up, to discover in adherence to him the complete fulfilment of our humanity.

“You have made us for yourself”, St Augustine wrote, “and our heart is restless until it rests in you” (Confessions, I, I, I). We must not be afraid of what God asks of us through life’s circumstances, even if it be the dedication of the whole of ourselves in a particular form of following and imitating Christ in the priesthood or in the religious life. The Lord, in calling certain people to live totally in him, calls all to recognize the essence of their nature as human beings: made for the infinite. And God has our happiness at heart, our complete human fulfilment.

Let us therefore ask him to allow us to enter and to remain in the gaze of faith that characterized the saints so as to discover the seeds of goodness that the Lord scatters along the path of our life and adhere joyfully to our vocation.

As I express the wish that these brief thoughts may be of some help to those who are taking part in the Meeting, I assure you of my closeness in prayer and my hope that the reflection of these days may introduce everyone into the certainty and joy of faith.

I very gladly impart to you, Venerable Brother, to those in charge and to the organizers of this event, as well as to everyone present, a special Apostolic Blessing.

Message of President of the Italian Republic Giorgio Napolitano on the occasion of the opening of the XXXIII edition of the Meeting for Friendship Amongst Peoples

Esprimo il mio vivo apprezzamento a lei, gentile professoressa, e a tutti gli organizzatori della XXXIII edizione del Meeting per l’Amicizia fra i Popoli, che nel tema prescelto La natura dell’uomo è rapporto con l’Infinito rivela con immediatezza l’aspirazione ad interpretare e a promuovere l’impegno nella società alla luce dei più alti riferimenti spirituali e dei valori fondamentali della giustizia, della tolleranza e della partecipazione.

I express my true appreciation to you, dear professor, and to all the organizers of the XXXIII edition of the Meeting for Friendship Amongst Peoples, which in the chosen theme By nature man is relationship to the Infinite reveals with immediacy the desire to interpret and promote a commitment in society in light of the highest spiritual principles and the fundamental values of justice, tolerance, and participation.

L’ampio spettro degli argomenti proposti esprime infatti in modo incisivo la consapevolezza della comune responsabilità nell’individuare modelli di sviluppo e parametri nuovi di benessere attenti a quei principi di equità e di solidarietà dai quali non può prescindere la tutela dell’interesse generale di una collettività e il rilancio di una crescita sostenibile e duratura.

The wide range of topics proposed, in fact, expresses in a decisive way the awareness of the common responsibility in identifying models of development and new parameters of well-being that are attentive to those principles of equity and solidarity from which we cannot remove the protection of society’s general interests and the revitalization of a sustainable and lasting growth.

Le testimonianze e le esperienze che verranno presentate sottolineano giustamente la necessità di dare fiducia allo spirito di iniziativa, alle competenze e all’impegno dei giovani: essi costituiscono un patrimonio di risorse e di energie indispensabile per mantenere viva la capacità progettuale e di innovazione che ha accompagnato le fasi di più intenso sviluppo economico, culturale e sociale del paese.

The testimonies and the experiences that will be presented rightly emphasize the necessity of putting our trust in the entrepreneurial spirit, the competencies, and the commitment of young people: they constitute a patrimony of resources and energies that are indispensable for maintaining alive the organizational and inventive capacity that has accompanied the phases of the most intense economic, cultural, and social development of our country.

In questo spirito rivolgo a lei, gentile professoressa, al Presidente Monti, agli illustri relatori e a tutti gli intervenuti il mio caloroso e partecipe saluto, insieme a un sentito augurio per il successo della manifestazione.

Cari amici,

Dear Friends,

che conforto mi ha invaso questa mattina, pensando a ciascuno di voi impegnati nella frenetica attività del Meeting, nel leggere il commovente messaggio autografo del Papa! Benedetto XVI ha compiuto ancora una volta un gesto pieno di tenerezza nei nostri confronti, indicandoci il punto fondamentale a cui guardare per non perdere la bussola in questa settimana piena di impegni: siamo «fatti per l’infinito». Avete in esso il calore e la luce per affrontarli.

What comfort I felt this morning, in thinking of each of you engaged in the frenetic activity of the Meeting, as I read the Pope’s moving handwritten message! Benedict XVI has made yet another gesture full of tenderness toward us, indicating the key point that we must keep in sight so that we do not lose our bearings during this busy week: we are “made for the infinite.” You have in this the warmth and the light with which to face the week’s activities.

Che gratitudine sconfinata potersi guardare ogni mattina con la consapevolezza che «la grandezza e la dignità suprema dell’uomo» consistono nel rapporto con l’infinito, che quella sete che investe «ogni fibra della mia carne» e che nessun peccato può eliminare trova risposta nella «gioiosa scoperta di essere figli di Dio»! Solo con questa autocoscienza possiamo vivere «la vita come vocazione». E tutte le sfide che dovremo affrontare lungo le giornate (dal caldo del parcheggio o in cucina all’umile impegno delle pulizie fino a quelle più appariscenti sul palco) ci sono date proprio per incrementare questa autocoscienza. «Nulla allora è banale o insignificante nel cammino della vita e del mondo», ci ha ricordato il Papa. Anzi, «ogni cosa, ogni rapporto, ogni gioia, come anche ogni difficoltà, trova la sua ragione ultima nell’essere occasione di rapporto con l’Infinito, voce di Dio che continuamente ci chiama e ci invita ad alzare lo sguardo, a scoprire nell’adesione a Lui la realizzazione piena della nostra umanità».

What boundless gratitude, to be able to look at oneself each morning with the awareness that “the greatness and supreme dignity of the human being” consist in the relationship with the infinite, that the thirst that invests “every fiber of my flesh” and that no sin can eliminate finds its answer in the “joyful discovery that we are children of God”! Only with this self-awareness can we live “life as vocation.” And all of the challenges that we will have to face during the course of these days (from the heat in the parking lot or kitchen, to the humble task of cleaning, to the more conspicuous challenges on stage) are given to us precisely in order to increase this self-awareness. “Nothing remains trivial or insignificant in the journey of life and the world,” as the Pope reminded us. On the contrary, “everything, every relationship, every joy, as well as any hardship, finds its ultimate reason in being opportunity of relationship with the Infinite; it is the voice of God who continually calls us and invites us to look up, to discover that clinging to Him is the full realization of our humanity.”

Mostriamoci amici gli uni agli altri, sostenendoci in questo cammino di purificazione da qualsiasi «falso infinito», per poter testimoniare a tutti quanti ci incontreranno durante questa settimana che cosa rende «la vita veramente libera e piena», che «il punto fondamentale, quindi, non è eliminare la dipendenza, che è costitutiva dell’uomo, ma indirizzarla verso Colui che solo può rendere veramente liberi».

Let’s show ourselves to be friends to one another, sustaining each other in this journey of purification from any “false infinites,” so that we can witness to all those who will meet us during this week what makes “life truly free and full,” that “the key point, then, is not to eliminate dependency, which is constitutive of man, but rather to direct it to Him who alone can make us truly free.”

Grato della testimonianza che mi date con il vostro sacrificio per gridare a tutti la speranza che portiamo nella nostra fragilità, vi auguro un felice Meeting.

Grateful for the witness that you give me with your sacrifice in order to proclaim to all the hope that we carry in our fragility, I wish you a happy Meeting.
