There is a proposal that will appear on the state ballot in 2016 to split California into six independent states? This proposal, put forth by noted Silicon Valley entrepreneur Tim Draper has qualified for the 2016 California statewide ballot. This is a serious effort, not “pie in the sky.” The very thought raises so many mind boggling questions: • What happens with state pensions and retirements, and state employees? • How to distribute natural resources, does it become interstate commerce? • State college tuitions, instate and out-of-state fees? • The U.S. flag will need 55 stars instead of the current 50. What will it look like? • Six states will add an additional 10 Senators, so, how about representation on the federal level? (Presumably, the representatives in the house will stay the same number.) • State licensing boards, how to manage? Which brings us to real estate. The state names will be Jefferson, North California, Silicon Valley, Central California, West California, and South California. • Will your “CalBRE” Real Estate license become a “SVBRE” license? • Contra Costa County will be in the state of Silicon Valley, as will Alameda and some other bay area counties. • Can you practice real estate business in Sacramento County, which will be in the state North California? • Or Modesto which will be in Central California?
• Perhaps there will reciprocal privileges allowing your real estate business in neighboring states. • What will be the future course of the California Association of Realtors? Become the Western Association of Realtors, or break up into six associations? It boggles the mind. For additional information, Google, ‘Six Californias.’ Wikipedia has a particularly good discussion on this topic.
Did you know… Zillow is set to acquire Trulia? Yeh, I thought you knew. This was announced Monday the 28th. Zillow will pay $3.5B in stock. The two will remain separate entities. Zillow has enjoyed the most traffic to real estate network sites, 56%, and Trulia 2nd with 33%. In addition, Zillow projects annual revenue for 2014 to surpass 2013 by 54%, and Trulia is projecting 75% increase over 2013. This portends many changes on the horizon for our industry. Expect the National Association of Realtors to aggressively promote the Realtor.com portal. NAR has invested additional $35M in a national marketing campaign. This constitutes the complete Agreement between Advertiser and Publisher.
