ALL SAINTS’ ORGANIC GARDEN

The organic

garden is a cross-curricular outdoor classroom where students learn about the interconnectedness of nature and find their place in the natural world. Planning and caring for the organic garden provides children with the fundamental knowledge they need to become stewards of a living system that can thrive with their care. Gardening teaches them that their actions have an impact on the natural world. Curricula from The Edible Schoolyard and Life Lab Science Program are incorporated into the program, as are nutrition, cooking, and eco-literacy. Students from ECU through 8th Grade participate in garden activities throughout the year.

In the upper grade elective classes, students planted several different types of vegetables and learned about plant care.

The 5th Grade experienced what it was like to go from “farm-to-table” as they planted, harvested, and cooked meals from the garden. Fourth graders also got their hands dirty, harvesting sweet potatoes after they moved “Bob,” their in-class sweet potato plant, to the garden. By participating in a soil exploration, third graders learned how to better plant and harvest herbs.

I like how everyone respects each other at All Saints’.

I also like how helpful the teachers are. When they are trying to teach a math lesson they describe the lesson in different ways until it makes sense to you. I also really like the Foreign Language class.

Albert Einstein As this edition of Reflections so beautifully reveals, our yearlong celebration of the All Saints’ Core Value of Gratitude and Grace was a joyous one indeed. See the article about Reid and Karen Woodward on page 6. As we move into a new school year—focused on our Core Value of Academic Excellence—Einstein’s observation about the inherent joy so central to both the practice of teaching and the process of learning is a most wonderful place to begin.

For whether it is seen in the delight of a student’s ‘aha’ discovery in a science class; or through the boisterous exuberance of teammates celebrating a hard fought victory on the soccer field; in the clear, unwavering voice of a student council candidate delivering an election speech to a packed chapel; or in the steady, determined steps of an ECUer’s first solo walk down the long outdoor corridor to class, the joy indicative of the very best of learning—in all its many forms and permutations—is ever present on the All Saints’ campus.

A deep love for learning is inspired by, and reflective of, the All Saints’ educational mission to “provide each child the opportunity to develop his or her highest potential to learn in a nurturing environment of spiritual growth and service to others.” Each day, members of the All Saints’ faculty engage students with a wide variety of educational methodologies and offerings that represent the very best in educational practice and theory, including 21st century learning skills, project-based learning, creative problem solving, integrated and cross disciplinary learning, experiential learning, technology application and digital citizenship, character education, and spiritual and ethical development. Recently revised daily schedules provide new

and important opportunities for students to think, ‘tinker’ and create (upper school block; organic garden, social and emotional learning programs) and our teachers have led the way with the creation of exciting new electives and course offerings. It is teachers who have been—and always will be—at the center of academic excellence, and at All Saints’ we are blessed to have a caring and dedicated faculty of outstanding caliber and commitment.

BOARD O F TRUST E E S It is wonderful to see the new school year get off to a great start. The entrance to the organic garden is a welcome and inviting new addition to our school. I loved kicking off the year with the first Gratitude and Grace Award, honoring Karen and Reid Woodward. Their lives are role models for our students—displaying character and a continuing thirst for knowledge, a passion for service to others, and an unending sense of wonder and joy at the beauty and diversity of the world around us. Thank you, Karen and Reid, and thank you to the Recognition Committee that brought this award to life. The award reflects All Saints’ values, and our children soak them in as they attend school each day.

Your Board of Trustees is hard at work. A year of requesting input and ideas from parents, faculty, staff, and trustees—then organizing that input—has resulted in our new All Saints’ Strategic Plan. Thanks to all of you for completing our surveys and being such an important part of the planning for our school’s future.

We are excited about the initiatives we will be kicking off in the areas of program development, fiscal strength, faculty and staff support, diversity, and resource development and utilization. Now that the Board of Trustees has approved the Strategic Plan, we will be moving forward on a variety of projects. We will keep you posted as these plans develop; some of them are already visible. For example, the summer Tech Camp and after school language and tech classes were programs that came out of the strategic planning process. They were great ideas that needed to be implemented now. I hope your children have taken and are taking advantage of them. There are many more good ideas to come.

I have been reading Carol Dweck’s book Mindset, and I recommend it to you. She emphasizes the importance of a “growth” mindset—inquiring, experimenting, and using failures as an opportunity for learning and growth, not as a time for despair. I was proud to recognize the All Saints’ mindset in the author’s words.

Thank you for sharing your children with us at All Saints’. We have the opportunity to focus on the development of the young child in our ECU-8th grade school. These are the years when children make decisions about what they love and what they are good at that affect their whole lives.

A passion for learning, the value of a robust work ethic, and the joy in discovery permeate the All Saints’ environment. It is a blessing to be part of the All Saints’ community!

What I really like about All Saints’ are the teachers. My math teacher works hard to make math fun and interesting for me. Teachers want school to be fun for us, so they have special days, like free dress and crazy hair day. Those are really fun! All Saints’ also helps us learn about God in a fun, interesting way.

all saints’ recognized for excellence in ethical education

The tenure of All Saints’ Day School extends long beyond the time in the classroom, for the students who go on to live important lives, and for special members of our community who contribute their time and efforts to make the school a unique and important experience.

The Center for Spiritual and Ethical Education (CSEE) recognized All Saints’ for Excellence in Ethical Education in March of 2013.

CSEE’s endorsement program attests to a school’s ongoing work to meet, at a high level, criteria widely recognized as hallmarks of excellence in moral development and character education.

Karen and Reid Woodward are just such people. They have invested themselves for 34 years in All Saints’ Day School, and for their exceptional contribution they were recognized as the first recipients of the Gratitude and Grace Award.

Their daughter May was in the class of ‘89. “Our daughter graduated, but we didn’t,” said the Woodwards. “We found a community that we just couldn’t let go.” They taught, conducted field trips, initiated outreach programs, and are major figures in the Halloween and Christmas celebrations.

The award was presented to the Woodwards at “Back to School Night” on September 5, 2013. Said Michele Rench, All Saints’ Head of School, “Reid and Karen Woodward are well known to current and former students, parents, faculty, and staff for their generosity of spirit, their warmth and consideration of others, especially those less fortunate, and their commitment to sparking curiosity and a love of learning.”

All Saints’ is committed to developing character with both depth and breadth. The school is prominent as much for its dedication to service as for its commitment to values, both of which are integrated throughout the curriculum. The program is strongly supported by the All Saints’ Board of Trustees. Deanna Cleary, Director of Character Education, works closely with Lower Grade Head Linda Paul to advance the mission. Chaplain Holly Hudson-Louis incorporates character themes into regular chapel gatherings that fortify the character program.

Three facets of the school’s commitment to character were noted: • Professional development is encouraged and supported.

• The Bean Program, now in its 20th year at All Saints’, is integral to life at All Saints’ and involves a well-organized cadre of students breaking down large bags of pinto beans into smaller parcels to be distributed to needy families in the Salinas Valley.

• The All Saints’ buddies program pairs older students with younger ones. The program fosters relationships, gives younger children an older student to look up to, and encourages older students to play a meaningful role in the furthering of All Saints’ culture.

Among the many wonderful aspects of All Saints’, the schoolwide effort to perform outreach projects in local and global communities is one of the most remarkable. All Saints’ extensive and long-standing Outreach Program, with its wide variety of ageappropriate projects, involves each student, faculty members, and many parents and is about putting words into action. Reaching out is an integral part of our curriculum and our community, and this program extends into the local region, out of state, and beyond our country’s borders.

Each class’ outreach project benefits an organization in our larger community, and each class has a specific service opportunity within the school itself. These ongoing responsibilities teach students the importance of being of service. In addition to individual class projects, the entire school participates in the Friday Bean Bagging Program. All Saints’ purchases 1000 pounds of pinto beans, and students divide them into bags of 4 and 6 pounds each. The beans are then delivered to families in the local farming communities.

In 2013, the fundraising project was dubbed “Working for Change.” All Saints’ students were asked to identify a different job they could do every day, separate from their regular chores, either in their homes, neighborhoods, or community. The idea was that students did these jobs to earn money to support the teachers of St. Patrick’s as the teachers worked to improve the quality of education for their students. “Working for Change” raised $2,527 this year.

A L L ABOUT H I STORY As any student of history knows, Rome was not built in a day, and neither is a great education in history and social studies. At All Saints’, social studies instruction begins in the Early Childhood Unit (ECU). Lorrie Stiles, a teacher with over 30 years of experience, notes, “Building a sense and an understanding of the importance of community at this age is the first step.” As part of the social studies curriculum, teachers guide ECU students each year in the crafting of a set of community class rules, such as ‘speak kindly to everyone.’ Developing and discussing these rules helps students respect their importance and the dynamic role they play in the class community and beyond,” says Mrs. Stiles. “An understanding of social studies begins, as students learn of the bigger world around them, their school community, and their own important place in it.”

An understanding of history and social studies continues and builds throughout all the lower grades. All Saints’ teacher Iris Charney Sullivan notes that 4th Grade is often a turning point for many children, and that the study of history is one reason why. “We approach history from many different perspectives, and as students learn to master a particular area of history, they then learn to write about it and do research-based projects.”

Additionally, Mrs. Sullivan takes her students on field trips throughout their year long study of California history. “We visit the Carmel Mission, San Juan Bautista Mission, Monterey Bay Aquarium, and the Big Sur Lighthouse.”

Candice De Vivo in 5th Grade, they have developed an appreciation for the historical method through research and project-based learning activities.

Ms. De Vivo takes her pupils on an American history journey that begins with exploring geography in August and ends on the Oregon Trail in May. Along the way, Native American cultures are studied in depth, as are the early colonists. Students research their own family histories, celebrating them at Family Heritage Day. The following year students move to the Upper School where they join Sara Brown in 6th Grade history. The interactive learning continues as students use the Internet to survey ancient civilizations, visiting both real-time and virtual archaeological sites in the school’s new computer lab.

Mrs. Brown’s pupils are encouraged to explore, analyze, and evaluate. “It’s really interesting how the ancient Egyptians

could make the pyramids without any modern technology,” says Minnie Mills ’15. “History is definitely one of my favorite subjects,” she adds. One can see why: according to Mrs. Brown, “There’s a real appreciation of learning and a respect for knowledge at All Saints’; it is a wonderful place to teach.”

Forbes Keaton, Upper Grade History Department head, teaches art history and 7th Grade world history. She emphasizes the importance of primary sources in the study of history. Ms. Keaton notes, “History isn’t about memorizing dates. If you approach it in a way in which students live history as stories of real people, written by them, that makes the difference.”

A second key component is the three-year art history program established by former Head of School Laurie Boone Hogen in the 1970s. “Art history not only makes history visible; it engages students’ critical thinking skills and supports long-term knowledge acquisition, what Harvard’s Project Zero educational research program describes as ‘artful thinking’. ” The third component is the department’s emphasis on Socratic teaching, a method steeped in rational inquiry. Michele Rench, Head of School and 8th Grade US History teacher, observes, “The study of history often raises more questions than it answers, and it’s in the consideration of those questions that students have the opportunity to develop and hone the higher level thinking skills of critical analysis, deductive reasoning, problem solving, synthesis, and the development of new ideas and insights.”

Another key component of the History Department is the 7th Grade students’ participation in the National History Day program.

History Day promotes “doing history” by exploring a topic of personal interest.

Traditionally, All Saints’ students have done extremely well at the various levels of this competition. During the 2012-2013 academic year, Kevin Cook ’14 won the Monterey County History Day event with his website project, The Death of Ray Chapman: A Turning Point in Baseball. Kevin went on to win at the California Sate finals competition in Sacramento, and he continued forth to represent California at the national competition in Washington D.C. His thesis demonstrated that the Cleveland Indians shortstop’s death in 1920, caused by a hit in the head by a pitch, resulted in new baseball rules prohibiting altering balls and eventually led to protective helmets for pitchers. A devoted Yankees fan, Kevin has broad interests ranging from mathematics and sports science to history and, not surprisingly, baseball.

Over the past 35 years, you have tirelessly dedicated yourself to your students and their endeavors - from 3rd Grade to 8th Grade, and everything in between; through raising a family of your own, to now being a wonderful grandpa.

You have opened up the magical world of the stage to your students, endlessly running lines, sharing your visions of character development, and maintaining order and harmony amidst actors, costumes, and props. Successfully casting, directing, and executing these incredible musical feats every year would be enough. But you delight in the jubilation and thrill of opening night every year.

While Dr. Camilo Willis’ focus is getting students to be competitive in the technology and science and math arenas, he says, “My primary goal is to get them ready for the next step.”

The Director of Technology continues, “All Saints’ Tech Camp was designed for students in grades 4 through 8 to learn a variety of programs and technology lessons. They learned to make website and mobile applications, and studied digital image editing, while reinforcing basic computer operation procedures.”

To better understand computer processes, visual programs such as Alice and Scratch allowed the student to animate an object. A student who wants a rabbit to jump up and down two or three times can see that immediately. They used logic blocks (blocks of data stored on a disk or tape) to better understand computer programming. “Tech Camp exposed students to concepts and practices to which they don’t customarily have access. Future camps will continue to focus on coding, graphic design, animation, and robotics. One challenge that presents itself when teaching students that age is following directions. Students that age are still developing listening skills.”

Another valuable lesson learned was that students with a strong technological bent often show unexpected creative skills. “Students with a creative bent are able to balance or facilitate technology a bit easier.”

In the summer of 2014, Dr. Camilo Willis will run his second eight-week Tech Camp at All Saints School. With what he learned during last summer’s program working with 4th and 5th graders, he’s got some creative ideas to engage.

A major emphasis is on verbalization. “The ability to communicate technological concepts is essential for instruction and learning,” he said. He also implements digital citizenship in his curriculum to impart lessons on inner personal skills. “I put a premium on the ability of the student to articulate clearly and to organize thoughts on the fly.” He always comes back to the importance of balancing technology with humanity. “For too long, personal contact has been lost in lessons. I want to be part of bringing that back.”

I really liked the chrome experiments, where we got to play instruments online with our friends. I also liked making movies.

I loved Tech Camp! I learned JavaScript, and we learned really cool special effects on iMovie like the pixie trick, which made it look like pixie dust was coming out our hands. The video game that we made was really fun to do; we had to compete with the computer to guess numbers. I also really loved building a computer the first week.

We got to learn new things that most people do not get to do. It was an awesome experience.

H E AD O F S C HOO L F OR TH E DAY This year Alex Davies ’13 enjoyed the coveted position of “Head of School for a Day.” Under his leadership, All Saints’ held an Olympic Games theme day, during which each class chose a country and an Olympic color to wear, and then spent the afternoon competing in games and receiving prizes. Alex proved himself to be a beneficent and convivial Head of School, declaring no homework for the day, treating his class to pizza and donuts, and providing fresh bagels for the rest of the school.

Academically, All Saints’ is outstanding, and both of our children have benefitted tremendously. They have both made great improvements in writing skills since coming to All Saints’. The teachers have been extremely attentive to areas on which they need to work, have built strong relationships with James and India, and have inspired both to focus and to work to improve their performance.

The math program has been wonderful. All Saints’ high standards and expectations for all students create a well-motivated peer group, and James and India benefit enormously from being with great classmates.

The 2012 All Saints’ Fall Festival was held Saturday afternoon, October 20. Families, friends, and the community turned out to enjoy games, delicious food, music, camaraderie, good spirit, and laughter. Guests played ‘Angels in the Attic’ and brought toys, books, puzzles, sports equipment, household items, and similar fare, in new or slightly used condition, to the festival. Knitters, jewelry-makers, and other crafters contributed their work to the cause, as did bakers who provided scrumptious breads, pastries, and desserts for sale. Games included freaky football, the cupcake walk, and duck pond. Attractions popular with all ages included pony rides, the rock climbing wall, the haunted house, and the ever-popular dunk tank.

I love Fall Festival! Last year I got a spider with a pumpkin painted on my face, went on a big slide, and climbed on the rock wall and then jumped off. You get to do everything! Ian Schindler ’21

Fall Festival has always been my favorite event at All Saints’, because it reaches out to the entire community and offers a day of pure fun for the kids. We look forward to the music, which includes student bands, the haunted house that the eighth graders craft each year, the dunk tank, the booths and rides, and the great food prepared by local restaurants, like Baja Cantina and our very own ‘Hot Lunch Dads.’ The smiles and laughter on the day of the event are so heartwarming! Shakespeare

All Saints’ Day School rolled out the red carpet May 4, 2013, at its first ever Fashion Show.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is perhaps the most magical of Shakespeare’s comedies. The King and Queen of fairies are numbered among the characters. The story weaves reality, dream, and enchantment into a sparkling whole, and the humor is rich. Some of the most notable quotes in Shakespeare are from Midsummer, from, “The course of true love never did run smooth,” to Puck, the fairy sprite, summing up human behavior with, “Lord what fools these mortals be.”

All Saints’ parents Brian and Angolee Bode (Zaiden '19 & Stella '23 ), owners of OYA Salon, guided our students on the staging, showing, and production of a real fashion show. Over 70 students participated as models, photographers, ushers, stage crew, and hair and makeup artists.

A pre-show soirée featured a delectable array of hors d’oeuvres and desserts from Restaurant 1833 and exquisite tastings from Brooks and Rodney Strong Wineries, accompanied with live music by local guitar artist Robert McNamara. Carmel businesses Heaven Boutique and StarChild Boutique provided fashions for the event. Additional sponsors were Fourtanés, Carmel Realty, Rumbleseat Music, and Kerastase.

For the Fashion Show We built a little walkway. The models would walk out and go in a little circle, and then put their hands up and smile. Every class did it. We even had a DJ. I got to help the DJ change songs. My favorite part was walking out on stage with my cousin. Zaiden Bode ‘19

The 2012 production of Midsummer was All Saints’ 24th fully staged Shakespeare production. It involved a cast of over fifty 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade students, including actors, narrators, fairies, dancers, musicians, and stage hands.

Karen Mignano, grandmother of Jacob Johnsson '12 and Joseph Johnsson '14, created a stunning set. Against this backdrop, magic happened, as it has every year since 1989!

Performing in a Shakespearean play is a lot more fun than reading it. For instance, if you are just reading the play it seems more complicated to interpret, but when you are acting it out, you can understand each sentence. When you are acting you have to be more outgoing, so you learn to be more comfortable with speaking in front of people.

Peter Pan A perennial favorite at All Saints’, Peter Pan has been a magical production for decades. But this year, we took the magic to a new level.Thanks to the creativity of teacher Bud Smith and the All Saints’ tech team, Peter Pan featured a “real” flying sequence over London. Filmed in front of a blue screen, the scene was digitally altered by 8th graders Hayden Gordon & Parker Olin. The adorable casting addition of Mini-Tink, Tinkerbell’s fairy in training, augmented the magic. The collaboration of technology, innovation, and All Saints’ enthusiasm made the 2013 production of Peter Pan truly a spectacle to behold.

In Peter Pan, I was an Indian and got to do a lot of fun dances. My ‘big sister’ at All Saints’ gave me her old costume, and I got to add things to it. That was really fun. I wanted to be in Peter Pan because my older brother used to perform for the shows, and I wanted him to see me in the play. Cailin Templeman ’18

Both my children have really enjoyed the All Saints’ Spring musicals, which feature children of all abilities in grades 3-8. Mr. Smith’s direction and vision for the program creates an environment that inspires children to express themselves through performing arts. I have watched my children blossom in confidence and ability through plays and performing arts.

The performing arts experience has encouraged the girls to grow in integrity and character, and has shown them how to respect others, follow leadership, work on a team, and step out of their comfort zones to reach their full potential. The performing arts program has inspired the girls to learn what can be accomplished through personal determination and dedication.

S p r i n g Te a Since 1980, the Spring Tea has honored parents with the gift of song during high tea. This year the Spring Tea evolved into a themed performance by all grades, with the 8th grade acting as the MCs for the afternoon. Parents enjoy artwork and projects displayed in the hallways before munching on delicious home baked treats and enjoying spirited performances such as a ‘Stomp,’ an inspired dance performed by the 8th grade.

Project Rescue The Primary Players, comprised of forty first and second graders, performed Project Rescue, a musical about being responsible for caring for the Earth, at the Bardis Family Performing Arts Center on April 18. Parents helped create the costumes for the play, which featured dancing and singing. The play focuses on caring for our planet and making conscious decisions during the day to reduce, reuse, and recycle. This play blends seamlessly with All Saints’ commitment to caring for the Carmel River Watershed, reducing waste, and working to become an Ocean Guardian School. With script and music by Michael and Jill Gallina, Project Rescue begins with oblivious picnickers polluting the forest, who are quickly taught through song and dance by various animals to care for the environment. Though many first and second graders already enjoyed getting to sing and act, the favorite part of Project Rescue seemed to be the making animal noise impressions.

In the play, I was a whale. I got to do the motions and sounds of an animal like “PHHHH!” That’s the sound of a whale with water coming out of it. Project Rescue was about saving the planet and trying to have no pollution. We sang a big song in the end, [singing] “Project Rescue! There’s so much we need to do!” I liked being the whale and having the whale suit on. This year, I look forward to doing it again and getting to play someone else. Duke Smith ’20 Project Rescue was about saving the earth. Picnickers were just throwing trash on the ground so the animals wanted to help earth so they convinced the picnickers to care about the earth. For the Spring Tea, the students sing songs for the parents, and the parents get to eat treats and stuff.

My class sang, “My Friend Wears a Wide Brimmed Hat,” and two other songs. We practiced a lot in music class. I like learning new songs. It was really fun, but sort of scary because we were in front of everybody singing. It was still fun, though. Hannah Filly ’18

Grandparents and Friends Day All Saints’ celebrated its 22nd annual Grandparents and Friends Day. The fourth grade presented the song Grateful – A Song of Giving Thanks. As we celebrated a year of inspiring lives of gratitude and grace, the words the students sang reminded us of our blessings.

Golf Tournament The 7th Annual Golf Tournament brought friends and community members together for an afternoon and evening of competition and camaraderie while fundraising for the All Saints’ financial aid program. Thanks to the incredible hard work and collaboration of Golf Committee Chair Michael Boylan and committee, Spencer Fontenay, Deborah Richards, the Pebble Beach Company, and countless others, the day was a huge, fun-filled, success.

A L U M N I NOT E S Fawn Nicholsen Remington '75 fondly recalls her time at All Saints’. In a recent letter, she said that “many of the moral values I live by I learned under the watchful eyes of Father Farmer, his wife Beva, and the teachers/ faculty that were like a second family to me over the years.” She currently resides in Widefield, Colorado and volunteers countless hours to cleaning up litter in the area’s recreational parks.

Angelique Cabral '93 is an actress in LA. Her newest endeavor, the half-hour comedy Enlisted, just got picked up as a series by FOX. She plays the female lead on the show, which is “kind of a mix between Private Benjamin and The Office.” Look for her new series coming soon.

Julia Kraft Laffon '94 lives in Burlingame. She welcomed her third child in June.

Ryan Aeschliman '95 is a project manager with Turner Construction. He resides in South Salinas with his wife and two children, Connor and Scarlett.

Michelle Arnold '96 moved to Davis and works for UC Davis as a Communications and Training Manager. She became engaged to her fiancé, Heart, on the four-year anniversary of their first date. Their July wedding was held in Davis and officiated by Father Paul Danielson.

Jeffrey Kraft '96 lives in San Francisco and works for a tech firm.

Lindsey Rockwood '96 is a veterinarian at Aguajito Veterinary Hospital in Monterey and has been back on the Monterey Peninsula since 2008. She is thrilled that her son, Austin, started 2nd Grade at All Saints’ this fall! Austin’s dad, Noah Cook '93, is also an alum. They are happy to be a part of the All Saints’ family once again!

Gabe Rosen '96 celebrated his 5th anniversary at Palantir Technologies, a Palo Alto software company working on a wide array of big data challenges. They recently announced a partnership with the Clinton Global Initiative to build mobile platforms for managing disaster relief efforts. Gabe can also be found at every Stanford home football game with fellow super-fan Robby Wellington '96 and his lovely wife, Rocio.

Sarah Talbott Hawthorne '97 was welcomed back to the All Saints’ community as a teacher in our ECU program. She and her husband, Taylor, have a new addition to their family... an adorable lab named Willow.

Tyler Wood '97 celebrated the opening of the Tyler Wood Gallery, San Francisco, on September 7. The gallery presented the work of Chason Mattham.

a teaching assistant and geography graduate student at the University of Montana. Albov was granted the Fulbright at the end of the first year of her master’s program at Montana, and intends to return to the university to complete her master’s degree before pursuing a Ph.D. in the field.

As a student at Loyola Marymount University, Kalin Talbott '00 became a mentor in the ARTsmart program.

ARTsmart gives LMU students the opportunity to work as artist-mentors to K-8th graders in underserved schools with no other arts programs. Kalin says, “It was incredible to see the transformation of the students. They really went in-depth into the art projects and genuinely gave it a chance. Some students were even able to open up about big things going on in their life and share them with their classmates.” Inspired by her passion for art and her leadership as an ARTsmart mentor, The Robert & Audrey Talbott Foundation established the Kalin Hart Talbott Art Scholarship, which offers financial aid to undergraduate art and art history majors at LMU who participate in the ARTsmart program.

Kris Hubby '03 is a computer engineer for TiVo in the Silicon Valley.

Stephanie Rosenbaum '03 has published her first book, a mystery novel entitled The Clue in the Old Ring. One reviewer praised it as “a terrific first novel, written in the Nancy Drew style of mysteries for young readers.” It is currently available on Amazon.

Stephie also participated in a choral tour that included performances at St. Marks Square in Venice and St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican.

Jack Bayless '05 majored in Molecular Biology and Environmental Science at UC Berkeley. He is applying to dental school for the fall.

Erin Gall '05 is a research intern at the Refuse and Recycling Research Center (R3C) at UCSB. She said, “At R3C, we are looking into possibilities to promote better waste recycling and composting habits, as well as creating better building waste habits. I hope that this research will help create more stable, waste-free environments and a healthier tomorrow for the earth and ourselves.”

Laura McCoy '05 graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Information Technology Management. She joined KPMG’s Contract Compliance Services practice this fall in Silicon Valley.

In August, she married Kevin Merfeld '99 at Quail Meadows in Carmel. Kendall Keith '04, Michele Jaeger '05 and Bryce McCoy '99 were in the bridal party, with many other All Saints’ alumni attending. Kevin and Laura reside in Capitola.

Gian Pepe '05 graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in May 2013 with degrees in Business Administration and Italian Studies.

Jon Steck '05 interned at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), where he was part of the team controlling the Rosetta Satellite. He graduated from Claremont McKenna College in May 2013.

After Maxwell Hooper '06 left All Saints’, he spent his pre-college years in San Jose, Santa Ana, and then Wolfeboro, New Hampshire before attending St. John’s University.

Through all of his years in school he was involved in basketball, which for him was not only a sport but provided seasoning as he grew up. “I feel like I learned how to work with others in my early athletic endeavors at All Saints’. I feel like my unrelenting competitive drive was fortified at All Saints’ as well.”

Claire Margolis '07 continues to love Stanford and has had a wonderful experience living in the Pi Beta Phi sorority house on campus. As captain, she traveled with the Stanford University Equestrian Team to the IHSA National Finals in Harrisburg, PA, where they placed second in the nation as Reserve Champion. Claire spent her summer at Dartmouth College as an intern in the biology and computational science program, developing research models to investigate protein-toprotein interactions and their impact on gene expression. She also used her recent EMT certification in a volunteer capacity.

Carolyn Bruckman '08 is in her second year of playing lacrosse at Harvard. Her love of athletics, which comes with a grueling schedule of practice, began at All Saints’, where she played soccer every year, plus a year of basketball. She thinks she remembers a single game of flag football. She loved playing soccer everyday in 4th grade in Mrs. Sullivan’s class and continued her sporting life at Stevenson. At Harvard, she is up at 6:30 weekday mornings to practice lacrosse, in preparation for a season that starts in February. She has seen several familiar faces cheering her on, including friend and All Saints’ classmate Ashley Worsham '08.

Jack Myers '08 is playing football at McKendree University and says “I learned a lot about sports at All Saints’. I learned that you need every player on the field to work together and be in sync to be able to win games.

I also learned how to be a team player by not always being the one who scores. The mental toughness you need for college sports is high, but with perseverance you can make it through anything.”

Devin Pearson '08 played center field his first season last year at Cal. He was leadoff hitter for the team and hit over .300. He was nominated for All America Honors, finished with a 3.4 gpa, and made the athletic honor roll. “At ASDS I learned what it meant to be on a team. I want my fellow players to succeed as much as I want to for myself. All Saints provided me with a basic understanding of hard work, sportsmanship, and dedication that I still carry with me today. All Saints’ taught me to be thankful for any athletic success that I have had, because I learned that everything is possible through God. That’s why I lead my team in a ‘God Squad’ prayer before every game, to be thankful for my opportunity to play the sport that I love.”

Ashley Worsham '08 loves Santa Clara University! In addition to enjoying the academic challenges of her Biology major, she joined Alpha Phi sorority and plays intramural tennis and soccer.

During his senior year at Carmel High, Brendan Phinny '08 was a member of the championship CHS Lacrosse team and was selected as a High School All American Lacrosse player. He now competes on the collegiate level at Santa Clara University.

John Jackson '09 was selected as an “All American” in Lacrosse. He also received the 2012-2013 “Best Athlete Award” from Stevenson School. Stevenson coaches present the award to the student “that represents the

While at Carmel High, Trey Coppinger '09 received a special commendation from Senator Dianne Feinstein for his academic achievement and his work in the community. He was also recognized for being a scholar-athlete and a role model to others.

Michael Decker '09 and the Stevenson School golf team won the 2013 CIF State Golf Championships at Quail Lodge & Golf Club. He was recruited to play golf at Vanderbilt University this fall.

Val Hooper '09 was accepted early decision to the Pratt Engineering School at Duke.

Jerome Lucido '09 had an exceptional year running track. He broke his high school’s records in the 400m, 4x100m, and 4x400m events.

He also won 3 medals at the CIF championships in all 3 races. His performances contributed to his school winning the Division II, San Diego CIF Championship title. Jerome will major in business marketing and management at CSUSM in San Diego County, where he will run track for a coach that has competed in the Olympics.

Daisy Villegas '10 attends Santa Catalina and was a MVP in soccer for the Mission Trail Athletic League.

Scott Weismann '10, a member of Troop 127, became their 114th Eagle Scout this spring. He was honored at an Eagle Court of Honor ceremony in August.

Helena Guenther '12 is a sophomore at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire.

Jack Margolis '12 enjoyed his freshman year at Stevenson. He was a member of the league champion water polo team in the fall and the only freshman on the MTAL champion varsity lacrosse team in the spring. He enjoyed water skiing and surfing this summer and played club lacrosse with Tribe 831 and club water polo with Legacy.
