GERMANY STANDS AS THE EIGHTH LEADING COUNTRY IN TERMS OF TOURISTS TRAVELING TO BRAZIL

MTUR ENSURES THAT THE COUNTRY IS READY TO SHOWCASE ITS TOURISM WEALTH TO GERMANS

Germany was the eighth country to send the most tourists to Brazil, totaling more than 158 thousand visitors, in 2023. In recent years, in addition to visits to family and friends or travel for other personal reasons - main reasons for Germans arriving in Brazil - German tourists visited Brazil for leisure and business activities. For leisure, the most sought-after destinations were Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Foz do Iguaçu (PR), São Paulo (SP), Angra dos Reis (RJ), and Paraty (RJ). And to explore even more of Brazil and all its strategy for this year of 2024, we talked to the Minister of Tourism, Celso Sabino, in this exclusive interview for ITB 2024.

MERCADO & EVENTOS - How is the federal government progressing to attract more international flights?

CELSO SABINO - We have been working hard to expand Brazil’s air connectivity with the rest of the world, and this work has already shown quite evident results. In the last six months, about 20 new international flights were created or resumed for Brazilian cities. Brazil has already returned to pre-pandemic levels in terms of the number of flights offered by airlines. Both in 2019 and in 2023, the number was 64.8 thousand flights. But this number is still far from our possibilities, which is why we continue to maintain permanent contact with sector operators to strengthen our global connections.

M&E - What message would the Ministry of Tourism of Brazil have for the German public visiting the fair?

CELSO SABINO - Brazil is home to numerous unique natural, cultural, historical, and gastronomic attractions, among many others, which provide singular experiences worldwide and could be your next travel destination! In 2023, Germany was the eighth country to send the most tourists to Brazil, totaling more than 158 thousand visitors, and we are ready to present to Germans the best of our tourism treasures. In terms of nature, by the way, Brazil was elected in 2023 by Forbes Magazine, one of the most prestigious international publications in economics, as the best ecotourism destination in the world among 50 nations. Therefore, I invite German tourists here to get to know Brazil even better. Don’t miss the chance to enjoy wonders that catch the eye of travelers worldwide! In terms of safety, we have excellent news. Brazil rose 27 positions in the global ranking among the safest countries to travel to in 2024. In the global classification, the country ranked 15th, being the only representative from Latin America to appear on the list. The information comes from a recent survey conducted by the American insurer Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection.

M&E - What are the preferred destinations and segments of Germans visiting Brazil?

CELSO SABINO - In recent years, in addition to visits to family and friends or travel for other personal reasons - main reasons for Germans arriving in Brazil - German tourists came to the country for leisure and business activities. For leisure, the most sought-after destinations were Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Foz do Iguaçu (PR), São Paulo (SP), Angra dos Reis (RJ), and Paraty (RJ). As for business, the main cities visited were São Paulo (SP), Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Curitiba (PR), Campinas (SP), and Porto Alegre (RS). In fact, surveys by the Ministry of Tourism have already indicated a good evaluation of hospitality services, gastronomy, and infrastructure in Brazil by German tourists, confirming the great potential we have to receive and welcome this audience well.

THE NUMBER OF GERMAN TOURISTS

VISITING BRAZIL GREW BY 31% IN 2023

EMBRATUR HAS BEEN WORKING WITH KEY OPERATORS IN THE GERMAN MARKET TO BOOST VISITORS

The number of German tourists visiting Brazil in 2023 increased by 31% compared to 2022, largely due to Brazil’s air connectivity with the world, which grew by 40%. This growth rate is expected to continue this year. But what can German tourists expect to find in Brazil in 2024? What actions can German agents and operators expect from Embratur this year? And what are the tips for making the most of their visit to our country? All these questions were clarified by the president of the Brazilian Agency for International Tourism Promotion (Embratur), Marcelo Freixo, in this exclusive interview for the special magazine produced by M&E for ITB 2024.

MERCADO & EVENTOS - What kind of Brazil will German tourists find in 2024?

MARCELO FREIXO - A plural and multicultural country that values the diversity of its people, respects human rights, and democracy. A country committed to climate action and undergoing transformation towards a sustainable development model, where tourism plays a part of the solution, generating employment and income for over 8 million Brazilians while increasingly promoting environmental and social sustainability. German tourists visiting Brazil will encounter a cheerful and receptive people who combat racism and promote inclusion.

M&E - What actions can we expect from Embratur alongside international agents and operators in 2024?

MARCELO FREIXO - We are focused on generating new business. We celebrated the end of the first year of management with a 40% increase in international air connectivity and a 62.7% increase in tourists visiting Brazil in 2023, recovering pre-pandemic levels, with a highlighted growth of 31.42% in the number of Germans

compared to 2022. For Germany, a priority market for Embratur, our efforts in 2024 will be aimed at recovering the volume of travel we had pre-pandemic. For this, Embratur has been working with key operators in the German market, having resumed the partnership with ARGE, the association of operators specializing in Latin America, with airlines, and with the support of the Brazilian Embassy in Berlin. We have positive expectations for this year. Lufthansa announced seat growth for 2024, with increased capacity on the Frankfurt-Rio de Janeiro route from 3 to 5 weekly flights starting April 1st, and to 7 weekly flights starting October 27th. We are also monitoring the positive results of the campaigns we conducted in 2023, cooperatively with important players in the German trade, such as Expedia, Opodo, TUI, and Viventura.

M&E - What strategies has Embratur adopted to promote Brazil abroad in 2024?

MARCELO FREIXO - We have the mission of consolidating Brazil’s image as a country recognized for its diversity and authentic and sustainable tourism experiences, contributing to increasing the entry of international tourists and foreign exchange. In 2024, we are consolidating the strategy we started last year, with actions focused on promoting a diverse, innovative, democratic, and sustainable country.

M&E - When is the best times to visit Brazil? How much time is needed to truly get to know the country?

MARCELO FREIXO - “Our strategy at Embratur prioritizes efforts to encourage tourists to travel outside of the peak season. According to market intelligence data, it’s possible to see that the main volumes of travel from German tourists to Brazil are from October to December. There is a large window of opportunity in the other months of the year. Knowing that ecotourism is a segment with great appeal to tourists in this market, the months of May and June can be of great interest to visit Chapada Diamantina in Bahia and Chapada dos Veadeiros in Goiás. It’s also a good time to visit the Pantanal.

Brazil, the largest country in Latin America, with its continental extension, 5 regions, 6 different biomes, and over 7 thousand kilometers of beaches, is considered the most biodiverse country in the world by the United Nations. It’s a destination that can be visited at any time of the year. We are also pleased to mention that 95% of tourists who visit Brazil intend to return according to the international demand research conducted by the Ministry of Tourism.

This fusion creates a unique identity for Brazil. It would be difficult, in just one page of this magazine, to highlight the main cultural and folkloric manifestations that spread throughout the country every year. It would take at least an entire magazine to tell the richness provided by Brazil through all its festivals, beliefs, dances, and customs. Therefore, we have gathered three remarkable festivals that embody and represent a bit of our country’s culture: Carnival, June Festivals, and the Parintins Festival.

CARNIVAL

Carnival is one of the most well-known festivals in Brazil. Celebrated across the country, it is marked by samba school parades, street festivities, music, dance, and lots of joy. It is undoubtedly one of the most emblematic celebrations in the country, attracting millions of people every year. The event is known for its vibrant parties, music, dance, parades, and contagious joy. It is a unique and exuberant experience that draws visitors from all over the world.

One of the most famous attractions of Carnival takes place in the “sambódromos,” especially in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. The samba schools prepare elaborate thematic parades that include floats, extravagant costumes, and choreographed performances. Each samba school represents a narrative and competes to win the competition.

In the same joyful and contagious spirit, Carnival is celebrated all over Brazil with the so-called

“blocos,” which are groups of people who gather to parade through the streets, often accompanied by musical bands, creating a lively and relaxed atmosphere. There are also the electric trios (cable cars), famous in Salvador, the capital of Bahia.

JUNE FESTIVALS

Another major point of Brazilian culture is the June festivals, which are nothing more than popular celebrations that take place during the month of June in Brazil, especially in the Northeast and Midwest regions, but also in other parts of the country. These festivities have their origins in European traditions but have been adapted and incorporated elements of Brazilian culture over time. The June festivals are marked by a lot of joy, music, dance, typical food, and colorful decorations, representing an important part of the Brazilian festive calendar, providing moments of fun, tradition, and celebration of local culture. These celebrations are a vivid expression of Brazil’s cultural identity.

Moreover, the festivals usually take place outdoors, with dances, music, and typical food. Speaking of music, they include traditional songs, known as “forrós,” and specific music for “quadrilhas (a type of dance).” The accordion, triangle, and drum are common musical instruments in this context. And in these festivals, there are “quadrilhas,” dance performances that portray traditional and folkloric stories. People dress in colorful country-style costumes, with full skirts, straw hats, and checkered shirts.

Now, the highlight of the June festivals is the typical food. It is the moment to taste or remember flavors that stand out precisely at this time of year. Most of them include dishes based on corn, such as “canjica,” “pamonha,” boiled corn, and popcorn. In addition, there are also sweets like “pé-de-moleque,” “cocada,” and “quentão,” a hot drink made with cachaça. And the June festivals are decorated with colorful flags, balloons, and rustic elements, all with vibrant colors that contribute to the festive and joyful atmosphere of the celebrations.

PARINTINS FESTIVAL

The Parintins Festival is one of the most well-known and colorful cultural events in Brazil, held annually in the city of Parintins, in the heart of the Amazon rainforest. This celebration is known for the intensity of its performances and the fierce competition between two “bois-bumbás,” the Garantido Bull and the Caprichoso Bull. The festival takes place on the last weekend of June and is a remarkable celebration of Amazonian culture, something unique in the world, which enchants even the most renowned artists.

BAHIA

SMILE, YOU’RE IN BAHIA!

One of the main states in Brazil and the Northeast, Bahia is full of charms that surprise those who visit its destinations, already well-established in national tourism. The state, which is slightly larger than the whole of France in territory, concentrates numerous options of cities, which gather many tourist attractions worth exploring.

Between the backlands and the coast, there are many scenarios to experience in Bahia. Whether during the hustle and bustle of Carnival or in the silence of the countryside, visiting Bahia is always a good idea. Pack your sunscreen and swimwear; in your headphones, the sound of Olodum; on your face, a huge smile; and get ready to embark on the magical Bahia.

Salvador, the Bahian capital, is not only one of the most sacred national territories but also one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Known for its strong Afro-Brazilian culture and identity, it is the place that hosts the largest African population outside of Africa. The charming city pulsates with history, vibrates with art, and enchants all who visit it.

The city’s territory combines beautiful scenic landscapes with mansions dating back to the colonial era. From the Lacerda Elevator, one of the city’s main tourist attractions, you can have a privileged panoramic view of the immensity of the Atlantic Ocean that forms the city’s

shoreline. Near the Elevator is the Modelo Market, where you can purchase beautiful artisanal pieces in more than 250 shops, as well as taste typical Bahian dishes, such as moqueca, shrimp bobó, tapiocas, and the famous and traditional Acarajé.

Other tourist spots to include in your itinerary are the Farol da Barra Beach and the Farol da Barra itself, and the Basilica Sanctuary Senhor do Bonfim. The city also hosts important cultural and religious events, being known, for example, for the largest street Carnival in the country and one of the most contested in Brazil, attracting thousands of revelers every year, whether to enjoy in the crowd behind the electric cable cars or in the comfortable vip areas. It’s a true open-air spectacle worth experiencing.

Leaving the capital, it’s worth exploring the “Discovery Route,” where Porto Seguro, Trancoso, and Caraíva are located. Another destination to connect with nature in Bahia is the Chapada Diamantina, a national park with lush landscapes located in a mountainous region in the center of the state.

As we can see, Bahia offers a little something for every traveler profile, making it one of the most diverse states in Brazil. And one of the most interesting. Disembark in the heart of the Northeast and get to know everything there, you won’t regret it.

RIO GRANDE DO NORTE

WHERE THE SUN SHINES BRIGHTEST

In the Northeast of Brazil, Rio Grande do Norte is a unique state. In its capital Natal, also known as the “City of the Sun”, there is the Parque das Dunas, the largest urban park in the country, which boasts a stunning landscape of white sand dunes bordering the city and the sea.

The city is home to Praia dos Artistas, Praia de Areia Preta, Praia do Meio, Praia de Ponta Negra, Canto do Mangue, and the lagoons of Pitangui and Jacumã, the main local tourist spots. But if you’re looking for adventure, don’t forget to visit the Genipabu Dunes and take a super-radical buggy ride. Include a visit to Forte dos Reis Magos in your trip, a historical symbol founded in 1599, which stands out for its star-shaped structure. Another significant landmark is Morro do Careca,

a 107 meters high sand dune, which ends by the sea.

It’s also worth immersing yourself in the local history and culture by visiting Palácio Potengi, a 19th-century building, the Memorial Câmara Cascudo, and the Natal Craft Center, housed in an old prison, which now features restaurants and even musical performances.

Beyond contemplation and refreshing swims, Rio Grande do Norte has great potential for surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, and diving, as well as snorkeling in natural pools. One tip is to travel about two hours from the capital to São Miguel do Gostoso to venture into the winds and sea.

Your trip should also include a visit to the world’s largest cashew tree, located in Parnamirim, on Pirangi Beach, 27 km from the tourist center and only 16 km from Ponta Negra Beach. It’s also worth visiting Maracajaú Beach, which is 60 kilometers from Natal, known for its shades of blue in the sea and coral formations.

At Maxaranguape Beach, in the municipality of Barra de Maxaranguape, the main attraction is the “tree of love,” two gameleira trees about 300 years old, which joined due to the force of the wind. The place is sought after by tourists who tie ribbons on the branches to immortalize their love or make union requests.

Praia de Pipa, one of the most famous beaches in the state, is 80 kilometers from the capital, in the city of Tibau do Sul. The cliffs, the plateau, the sand dunes, as well as the natural pools and dolphins swimming in the sea, are noteworthy here.

Rio Grande do Norte requires more than a week of travel to fully explore, given the richness of colors, flavors, cultures, and experiences it offers.

MARANHÃO

A VASTNESS OF BEAUTY AND TRADITION

When we think of Maranhão, culture and history immediately come to mind. The state exudes tradition, legends, and customs. Its past and its people carry within them wisdom, behaviors, and beliefs that make Maranhão one of the most interesting destinations in the country. The state is a charming destination for those seeking history, nature, and authentic flavors. Serving as the gateway to the impressive Lençóis Maranhenses, the state also stands out for the plurality of its capital, its numerous tourist segments, such as the religious aspect in destinations like Alcântara, and its delicious Maranhense cuisine, with typical dishes such as “arroz de cuxá” and the famous “camarão na moranga” (shrimp in squash).

São Luís do Maranhão, better known as São Luís, is one of the coolest and most interesting capitals in Brazil. A true cultural haven. Jamaican influence is very clear in the culture of the capital, especially popularized in the 1980s. It’s no wonder the city was recognized as the Reggae capital of Brazil. To this day, the Caribbean rhythm fills the city and is a trademark of the Maranhense. In the Historic Center of São Luís, it is possible to learn more about this Brazil-Jamaica connection at the Reggae museum. In fact, the center is filled with museums that convey some of the personality of the capital and the state.

One of the largest and most important artistic and cultural manifestations in Brazil takes place in the sta-

te and gains strength in the capital. This is São João do Maranhão, a traditional festival full of music, dance, and joy. The festivities include colorful dances, typical foods such as corn cake and “arroz de cuxá”, as well as games and cultural performances in traditional “arraials” (village fairs). But the most striking feature of the festival is undoubtedly the Bumba Meu Boi, a cultural manifestation that blends music, dance, and theater. A unique immersion experience in Maranhense culture, where the streets fill with joy and tradition throughout the month of June. If Bahia’s Carnival is one of the main spectacles of the Brazilian cultural calendar, São João do Maranhão is its equivalent in the state.

For those seeking a contagious connection with nature, a visit to the Lençóis Maranhenses is essential. The energy of the place, which fills the eyes with its breathtaking cinematic scenery, would already guarantee a trip to the location. The National Park was elected the second most beautiful in the world and also ranks in the top 5 of the most interesting destinations in Brazil. Known for its vast desert landscape of large white sand dunes and seasonal rainwater lagoons, this Brazilian treasure possesses a unique atmosphere and surreal landscapes that evoke a mixture of feelings in those who visit.

Enjoy the colors, flavors, rhythms, and vibes of Maranhão. You won’t regret it!

ALAGOAS

FEEL AND LIVE DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES IN ALAGOAS

Saying that Alagoas is one of the most beautiful states in Brazil and offers a wide variety of tourist attractions for all tastes is not really big news. The state is known for its beaches with warm, calm, and crystal-clear waters, as well as its rich culture and history.

However, it is in the countryside of the state that one of the most beautiful postcards is found. The region is known for its arid landscape and rich culture, with Piranhas standing out. The historic city located on the banks of the São Francisco River is one of the main tourist spots in the backcountry, boasting a well-preserved historic center with centuries-old architecture and a lively and cozy nightlife. In the region, it is also possible to enjoy several unique experiences, such as a boat ride on the waters of the Velho Chico, which runs through one of the world’s largest navigable canyons.

In the North Coast of Alagoas is one of the most popular destinations among tourists: Maragogi. The busiest tourist gateway in Alagoas, second only to the capital Maceió, boasts breathtaking beaches, as well as a large hotel chain and great options for beachfront dining. Japaratinga and São Miguel dos Milagres are other cities on the North

Coast that stand out for their natural beauty and increasingly popular tourist attractions.

In this region lies the Coral Coast, which stretches for 135 km, being one of the largest coral reefs in the world and home to a wide variety of marine life. The best time to visit the North Coast is during the summer when rains are less frequent and the natural pools are clearer.

If Alagoas is on your radar for the next trip, the capital Maceió cannot be missed. The city is known for its lush urban waterfront, such as Pajuçara Beach, famous for its natural pools, and Ponta Verde Beach, which is ideal for those who enjoy calm water sports and nature contemplation.

It is precisely in the Ponta Verde neighborhood, which gives its name to the beach, that an iconic construction is located: the Coral Reef Marker. There is an installation with fiber optic lights forming a compass rose. The space has a walkway where you can observe the movement of the sea under the monument, as well as a path that shows, with special luminaires and LED lights, all the beaches of Alagoas and Pernambuco that are part of the Coral Coast.

PARÁ

PARÁ BOASTS STUNNING NATURE AND COMMUNITY-BASED TOURISM

Naturally breathtaking, Pará offers endless natural attractions such as rivers, beaches, mangrove areas, forests, with a notable emphasis on its unique fauna. Located within the Amazon Rainforest, at the mouth of the Amazon River, Pará holds extraordinary potential for community-based tourism and ecotourism, perhaps one of the most promising destinations in the world. The key differentiator is the local populations inhabiting these territories and their relationship with nature, along with the ancestral knowledge they possess. They are the primary guardians of the ecosystem.

Belém, the state capital, is considered the gateway to the Amazon. With its centuries-old history, which has contributed to our understanding of the region today, it has a vocation for gastronomic, cultural, nature-based, as well as business and event tourism. Its proximity to conservation areas allows tourists to experience multiple experiences that blend tradition and modernity, as well as encounters with nature and the vibrant city. A true Amazonian experience.

The capital is a complete tourist destination with a variety of leisure options such as Estação das Docas, Porto Futuro, Mangal das Garças, Ver-o-Peso Market, as well as numerous rich museums and historical landmarks from the Belle Époque.

Cultural, sun-and-beach, and leisure tourism also stand out in the Tapajós region, especially with Santarém and its Vila de Alter do Chão, and the Marajó region. These regions combine beaches, forests, folkloric events like Sairé, handicrafts, and Tapajonic and Marajoara ceramics.

NATURE

Nature tourism, ecological tourism, and sport fishing stand out in the Xingu Region, in western Pará, offering the opportunity to explore beautiful landscapes with trails, waterfalls, and caves nestled amidst the vast greenery of the forest. Visiting during the Amazonian summer, when the frequency of rains increases the volume of water in the waterfalls, enhances the scenery, making it ideal for swimming. Highlights include Cachoeira da Planaltina and the largest sandstone cave in Latin America.

FESTIVALS AND RELIGION

Religious tourism also strengthens cultural identity and boosts the economy in Pará. Festivities in multiple regions perpetuate traditions, promote tourism, and become an alternative source of employment and income generation. Among the highlights are the Marujada de São Benedito festival in Bragança and the famous Círio de Nazaré in Belém.

MINAS GERAIS

ALL THE HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CHARM OF MINAS GERAIS

Minas Gerais is a historical and cultural destination, with many attractions and a strong gastronomy scene. Its capital, Belo Horizonte, boasts the largest cultural complex in Brazil, consisting of 32 facilities such as museums and cultural and art spaces.

In the metropolitan area, it’s possible to visit Inhotim, the largest open-air museum in the world and one of the main botanical gardens in Latin America. Moreover, Minas has several routes of historical heritage and offers plenty of religious tourism and traditional festivals such as “Congados” and “Folia de rei.”

In Beagá, as the capital is known, the options for those who enjoy nature, cultural and historical heritage are endless. The city offers great walks through cultural spaces, sometimes possible to be done on foot. There are museums, cinemas, parks, theaters, hills, and viewpoints during the day. At night, the world capital of bars is always full of beautiful and cheerful people.

Praça da Liberdade is the cultural epicenter of Beagá. Surrounded by historic palaces, museums, and exhibition spaces, this area stands out for its imposing architecture and well-kept gardens. The Cultural Circuit of the Square also offers a fascinating journey through the city’s history and art.

Also noteworthy is the Pampulha Architectural Complex and one of its main attractions, the Church of São Francisco de Assis, a postcard of the city and a masterpiece by architect Oscar Niemeyer. The circuit is so beautiful and special that UNESCO recognized the modern ensemble as a Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

For those who want to get a taste of the local cuisine, considered one of the best in the country, the Central Market is the ideal gastronomic and cultural paradise.

Minas is also well-known for its historical cities, especially Ouro Preto. More than just a historical city, it’s a journey through time, where cultural richness, spectacular architecture, and the local traditions come together to create a unique experience. Anyone who wants to learn more about Brazil’s colonial past cannot miss the opportunity to visit it.

Among the best-preserved historical cities in Brazil is the calm and charming Tiradentes. It was during the gold rush that its colonial streets became crowded. Currently, it’s the 18th-century churches that share attention with the preserved colonial houses formed by townhouses that house restaurants, inns, antique shops, and craft stores that shine their lanterns lights on the facade at dusk. Tiradentes is a dream itinerary!
