Frank X. Medrano Born and raised in Chicago, I was influenced from an early age by the city’s historically significant Architecture and Art museums. I developed a dedicated passion for design that would eventually lead me to earn a Bachelors of Architecture from Lawrence Tech University in Southfield, Michigan and a Masters of Architecture from SCI-Arc in Los Angeles, California. I began my career in the offices of noted architects Frank Israel, Michael Maltzan and Frank Gehry. In 2000, I began work as a Senior Interior Architect at KWID with famed Interior Designer Kelly Wearstler. While at KWID, I played a significant role in the company’s massive success on projects such as the Viceroy Santa Monica and Palm Springs Hotels; the High Roller Suite and Body English Nightclub in the Hard Rock Hotel, Las Vegas, as well as several retail boutiques, office spaces and private residences. In 2005 I began work on several solo projects including; the Avalon Hollywood’s Lobby & Honey Restaurant, Brannon Hair Salon at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas, and the restoration of a John Lautner residence. The following year I formed Franklin Studios with notable projects including Tengu Restaurant, Abode Restaurant, Foxtail Bar & Lounge, and the Deuce Lounge at Aria, Las Vegas. In 2009 I was contracted by world renowned interior design firm HBA Los Angeles to design and project manage a mix of luxury international hotels and private villas. In 2013 I reformed under the identity FAI Frank Associates International. Some of my projects have been featured in a variety of publications including Vanity Fair, Space Magazine, Angeleno, Details Magazine, Hospitality Design Magazine, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Elle Décor, Item Magazine, Space Magazine & Wallpaper. In addition, I was chosen as a recipient of Hospitality Design Magazine’s “Wave of the Future” award in 2008.

The Rocks- Fine Jewelery MGM Grand Casino, Las Vegas, NV, USA The Jewelers of Las Vegas, a premier jewelry boutique showcasing luxury brands, will premier as the only Jeweler at the MGM Grand. The design takes its cues from the project location and project scale to create the ultimate guest experience. Located next to the casino floor, the space is a “Beacon” site to guests entering the Restaurant corridor. While considering the short seconds it takes a guest to view the space along the main throughway of the casino, as well as general circulation patterns, the design creates a “ribbon like” element that starts from the exterior and then fluidly transitions along the ceiling to the back of the space. The folding planes are conceived from a fanned deck of cards spread horizontally on a tabletop. The overlaps of each card, allow for some irregular geometries to occur and create some visual movement within the ceiling as well as to the angled glass front addition. a staggered pattern. In the side room is a backlit wood screen, adding a layer of warmth to the space. This also peeks its way through to the front elevation facing the public way.

SHOPS AT RIVERSIDE Hackensack, NJ, USA As a re-imagined property for Simon Property Group, the design was to emphasize the boutique nature of the mall, and its clientele. Critical research into understanding what the modern shopper expects as well as potential offerings not commonly presented at suburban luxury malls were defined in shaping the goals of the design. While maintaining a fully operational mall, construction was phased in 2 parts. Phase I was to create a luxury interior loop of premier shops with a timeless and sophisticated backdrop. Phase II was to address the exterior and offer a grand entry gesture to the arrival sequence. The makeover will include inspiring art, a VIP lounge to rejuvenate, and a concierge service that will attend to guests’ every need including personal shopping, package delivery, and coat check.

Venetzia Fine Jewelry Las Vegas, NV, USA Venetzia Fine Jewelry opened its first location at the premier opening of new Palazzo Resort Hotel Casino. Venetzia Fine Jewelry Las Vegas, NV, USA The second location designed for the Jewelers of Las Vegas. The Venetzia Fine Jewelry brand, a premier jewelry boutique showcasing luxury brands, will make its debut at MGM Grand resort international. The design will combine precious jewel tone inspired colors like amethyst, amber and ruby, bronze metals, and warm wood tones to blend harmoniously, exuding an understated style. The layout is set on axis to a central column that becomes a focal element draped in a bronze, chrome, and mesh sculpture. In contrast to the axial layout, organic fluid forms and patterns are introduced throughout the space; wall to wall hand tufted carpet inspired by the patterns of an agate precious stone, concentrically placed display counters textured wall covering, cellular patterned millwork paneling, and light fixtures as metallic waves.

Tengu Sushi Santa Monica, CA, USA

Tengu’s design was driven by its location along Santa Monica’s Ocean Boulevard – a trendy stretch of restaurants and tourist destinations along the beach. Frank X. Medrano reinterpreted the traditional, dark sushi restaurant as a place of openness and light to reflect its surroundings and to draw people in from off the street.

Abode Restaurant and Lounge Santa Monica, CA, USA Abode is a small, sophisticated gem tucked away in an intimate courtyard off of Ocean Avenue. The austere, abstract geometries of high-sixties design encase the dining room and lounge-bar. The concept of garden is brought out abstractly by regularizing organic forms into ornate patterns. The color pallet is rich and earthy, and the stone slabs provide a natural source of wildly varied texture.

Foxtail Supperclub West Hollywood, CA, USA While retaining the glamour of a 1920’s high society Supper Club, Foxtail turns early twentieth-century design on its head. Two stories of exotic materials, dense pattern and unexpected detailing combine elegant dining with an exclusive night club.

The Deuce Lounge Las Vegas, NV, USA This sophisticated, high-rollers lounge was created as a hideaway from the din of the main casino floor. Guests can simultaneously enjoy the service and atmosphere of an intimate club while enjoying high-stakes gaming.
