MEDLINES

Successfully Expanding Upward

Dear colleagues,

A Message from the Executive Office

These are momentous times for Medline. As you look through this edition of our employee magazine, you’re going to feel that reflected in a theme of growth. Not just the growth of our business, which we’ve kept up every year for the last 58 years, but also growth in our innovative spirit, our product offering, our physical facilities, our efforts to do more for the environment and, above all else, our ability to get our customers the products and solutions they need when they need them.

That said, there’s a second feeling I hope you take from this issue: one of immense appreciation. As Medline leaders have stressed so many times before, none of the advancements we’re making right now would be possible without you. Your energy. Your ideas. Your grit. Your devotion and customer focus. Your belief in the value of what we do, the world-class products we manufacture and distribute, and what their speedy delivery means for patients in hospital beds, surgery centers, nursing homes, doctor’s offices, home care settings and every other location where healthcare simply must run better.

As we grow together in 2025, I encourage you to stay focused and continue innovating in new and exciting ways.

I cannot express my thanks enough. I hope you enjoy this issue and feel as inspired about the future as I do.

Jim

Your Voice Helps Us Build a Better Medline

Our greatest strength comes from our teammates. Feedback from our employees is essential to improving as a company and workplace. In 2024 we ran a Global Employee Engagement Survey to gather feedback from employees about working at Medline. More than 83% of employees shared their input, identifying what is working well and where we need to improve.

The survey results showed that we have a lot to be proud of: 82% of employees would recommend Medline as a great place to work, and 88% believe we are committed to exceeding our customers’ expectations. We also heard your feedback that there are opportunities to improve processes, streamline some of the ways we work, and get better at managing change. This valuable feedback helps us continue to make Medline a stronger and better company. Department and division leaders have been creating action plans with their teams to build on our successes and make improvements in their areas of the company.

Your commitment underpins our success, and your continued insights and feedback help us create a workplace where everyone feels seen, supported, and connected.

The Engagement Survey is just one way we gather your feedback. You are encouraged to share your ideas, feedback or concerns directly with your manager or HR representative at any time. Additionally, we are pleased to offer two online platforms where you can ensure your voice is heard:

A Day in the Life of a Distribution Center

A well-orchestrated choreography of individuals and instruments is played out every day at Medline’s 50 distribution centers in North America—and C54, in Montgomery, New York, is one of the largest and busiest.

The round-the-clock performances of 700 team members and 40 leaders are conducted by Tom Fallon, senior director of operations. “The only time our facility closes is Saturday evenings, but MedTrans driver shifts run 24/7,” he explains.

At 3 a.m. in the dark of night, the Replens team, short for "replenishment," punches in. As the name implies, the team replenishes pallets with materials for the day. At 6 a.m., before many of us have had our fill of coffee, the Receiving and Induction teams set the stage for the Picking team arriving at 9 a.m. In this key role, they “pick” orders, whether slotted directly for the customer or going to another site before reaching their final destination.

The shifts begin with a brief, productive startup meeting where team members prepare for the physical duties of their day by stretching. Meanwhile, supervisors share quick updates and kudos. This agenda is followed across Operations as part of the continuous improvement process known as “Start Strong, Finish Strong.”

Like other leaders, Fallon sets the tone, sharing the Operations vision and relentless attention to safety, keeping the team motivated and reviewing daily production results— all while seeming to clone himself by joining countless department meetings across shifts and functions. Along with Distribution and Transportation, C54 comprises Inventory Control, Training, Quality, Maintenance, Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety and Human Resources.

“With new shifts starting every three hours, I drop in on at least one start-up meeting in the morning, another at midday, and one night a week I stay for the

C54 by the numbers

• 1.3 million square feet

• $33 million payroll

• $2 billion in annual sales

• One of the largest rooftop solar panel systems in the state of New York. Produces enough power to run 1,600 homes.

• Generates more than $2.5 million in annual taxes for state and local taxing bodies

• Spends more than $1.5 million annually with local vendors

• Named the Orange County Chamber of Commerce Best Place to Work in 2024

overnight shifts,” Fallon says. “But the most important job I have is to thank our team members who keep everything humming.”

When it’s time for lunch, team members gather in one of three cafeterias, where conversations unfold in Spanish and English.

After lunch, the pace builds to a crescendo with human-piloted vehicles gliding gracefully alongside towering shelves of products: catheters, 376 types of exam gloves, vaccines stored in walk-in coolers, the iconic pink-and-blue baby

receiving blanket invented by Medline in 1950 and our flagship sterile surgical procedure trays. The trays are customized not only by procedure, such as knee replacement, but also to suit surgeon requirements, such as left-handedness.

At C54, 150 robots zip vertically and horizontally along a metal grid – the size of a football field and six stories deep—thanks to the sophisticated AutoStore™ system. The robots do much of the literal heavy lifting, shuffling bins faster than humanly possible.

Conveyor belts carry incoming product to the robots and outgoing packages to the trucks. The conveyor spurs are equipped with traffic control, so that outbound packages yield to more urgent packages whose trucks are leaving sooner.

Hospitals place their orders by 1 p.m., and by 5 a.m. the next morning, wheeled carts loaded with 20 blue bins

apiece are on the hospital’s loading dock.

NYU Hospital gets 12 trucks a day from C54; Mount Sinai Hospital, 11 trucks; Montefiore Hospital, four trucks; Westchester Medical Center, two trucks daily. This delivery model frees the customer from having to use their limited storage space for inventory.

By 3 p.m., a new shift takes over. Departing team members return vehicles to their parking spots, ensuring batteries are powered up and equipment is ready for the next shift. This cadence continues throughout the evening and early morning.

Before Fallon calls it a day, he sits down to prepare for an upcoming leadership meeting. His topic? Best practices for positive work environments. This month, his site is planning a local food drive, a 5K walk for Alzheimer's awareness and research, and a promotion to win a pair of steel-toed shoes.

“It’s the small things that add up,” Fallon says. “When the team thinks this is a good place to work, they refer their friends to work here, too.”

FROM LOCAL ROOTS TO GLOBAL LEADER

Continued Innovation Medline’s and Expansion

It all began in 1910 with A.L. Mills making butcher aprons for stockyard workers in Chicago. Our business hasn’t stopped innovating and expanding since those early days.

We now have more than 43,000 employees worldwide and are the largest provider of medical-surgical products and supply chain solutions serving all points of care.

Why We Succeed

“We have a rich history of serving customers,” said Steve Miller, Medline chief operating officer. “We’ve built and continue to invest in our bestin-industry supply chain to ensure customers get what they want, on time and in the right condition.”

Our supply chain solutions, coupled with Medline brand products, are what sets us apart. This powerful

combination from a single partner is unique among healthcare suppliers. Through global sourcing and advanced technology, our end-to-end network spans manufacturing, distribution and transportation.

But it wouldn’t work without all employees working together. Medline’s growth isn’t just about numbers; it’s about the people who make it possible.

"We're a large company, but we've managed to create an entrepreneurial culture," said Amanda Laabs, Medline chief product officer. "We're making sure that the person who is closest to the customer—who is closest to the problem —has a voice in how we solve things."

A Legacy of Growth

Medline has grown every year for 58 years. Our ability to try new things, focus on customers and invest wisely has

fueled our growth, following the same path set by the Mills family for more than a century. Today Medline stands strong among familiar brand names like McDonald’s and Dunkin’ Donuts.

Manufacturing and Product Excellence

We offer more than 190,000 distinct products and self-manufacture more than 60,000 Medline Brand products across more than 20 owned and operated manufacturing sites. Manufacturing excellence, combined with global sourcing, helps us offer high-quality products at competitive prices.

“The best thing about Medline solutions is that they address specific healthcare needs, tailored for specific customers,” says Doug Golwas, Medline chief commercial officer. “Providing world-class products and best practice expertise, we’re helping improve clinical outcomes.”

Strategic Investments

To meet and anticipate customer needs in today’s rapidly changing environment, we continue to invest in new distribution centers and advanced technology. Since 2018, we have opened 20 new distribution centers, bringing our total footprint to more than 50 distribution centers across North America. We now have 28 million square feet of warehouse space.

Medline was the first company in the United States to adopt the AutoStore™ robotic order fulfillment solution and is now its largest user. We have almost 2,000 robots across 20 sites that help us fulfill orders quickly and correctly.

In addition, our MedTrans private

transportation fleet is the largest of any healthcare product distributor in the U.S. With 1,800 drivers and 2,000 trucks, we ensure that 95% of our U.S. customers receive their deliveries within one day. The MedTrans fleet uses a dynamic routing system to ensure timely deliveries while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Chicagoland Expansion

To accommodate current and future growth, Medline is adding new work spaces in the Chicago area, including 110,000 square feet in the Merchandise Mart and a 210,000-square-foot facility in Northbrook.

“As Medline continues to grow, the company is committed to ensuring it has the space needed for employees to thrive, collaborate and feel connected,” says Kate Slattery, senior vice president of real estate and indirect procurement.

Sustainability Initiatives Matter

As a healthcare industry leader, we work hard to reduce our impact on the environment. Our commitment includes:

• 2.7 million square feet of solar rooftop space

• 60,000 solar panels

• 94% of distribution center space operating as LEED-certified

• Investments in energy-efficient vehicles

• ReNewal™ program to reprocess medical devices that would otherwise end up in a landfill. Recent expansion doubled capacity in Redmond, Oregon.

Winning Awards

As we grow, we continue to uphold the highest standards and care for our employees, which has not gone unnoticed in the industry. Some of our numerous awards include:

• Modern Healthcare 2024 Best in Business award

• Jim Boyle named among the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare for 2024

• Forbes “America’s Best Large Employers” and “Best Employers for Women”

• 14th year as a Chicago Tribune Top Workplace

• Diamond-level Healthcare Industry Resilience Collaborative (HIRC) Resiliency Badges for manufacturing and distribution

Hurricane Heroes

The MedTrans fleet covers up to 80 million miles a year, making up to 2.3 million annual deliveries—in other words, they know how to get things done. When back-to-back hurricanes devastated the Southeast last fall, the team delivered not only much-needed medical supplies and linens but even brought food and water to hospital patients and hurricane victims in need.

Dubbed “The 1,000-Year Storm,” Hurricane Helene dropped an estimated 40 trillion gallons of rain— enough water to fill Lake Tahoe. When longtime customer Mission Health called asking for help because it didn’t have enough food for its hospital patients in Asheville, North Carolina, the MedTrans team jumped into action.

“We don't ship food, but we’re definitely not going to let people starve,” said Dustin Marlowe, MedTrans manager, at our C57 Distribution Center in Mebane, North Carolina. His team, with help from B33 in Charlotte, made it to the

customer’s food distributor, but from there all the roads were closed. “The only way to reach the hospital was by police escort,” Marlowe said, “so we found a way to make that happen.” He arranged for State Highway Patrol to safely guide four MedTrans trucks full of food and medical supplies through the only possible route to the hospital.

Requests for help kept pouring in like the rain itself, and teams from B25, C89, C54, B36 and C50 stepped up to help, even bringing food and water to the Mission Health community food tent.

Days later Hurricane Milton hit Florida. When news broke that C05 in Auburndale, Florida, was directly in its path, Medline’s Disaster Response Plan once again kicked in, ensuring customer commitments were met and team members were safe. The day before the storm, C05 picked a whopping 72,000 lines in one day before closing to ensure team member safety. That’s when B28 in Prattville, Alabama, picked up the additional

demand and also sent food and water down to Florida. Key to the Medline plan is the resiliency of our supply chain, which enables customers to be serviced through an alternate site, if necessary, during a disruption.

“I’m glad we were there for our customers and that Medline supports going the extra mile when it counts,” Marlowe said. “Bottom line, we take care of people.”

“The only way to reach the hospital was by police escort, so we found a way to make that happen.”

Meet our 2024 Jim Mills Excellence Award Winners

Named in honor of Jim Mills, former Medline Chairman who served as Medline’s chairman and CEO for 30 years, the Jim Mills Excellence Award recognizes Medline employees who have made a difference on their teams and for the company as a whole. Mills led by example through his dedication to innovation and customer service, and these winners demonstrate the same spirit and drive for success. Congratulations to the 2024 winners!

A series spotlighting Medline employees who have been with the company 20 years or longer.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

“I was 24 and working in construction, framing houses. But in January and February in the Chicago area, you don’t want to frame houses. One day, it was snowing and snowing and we were still out there. We went to a restaurant to warm up, and at the table next to us, someone said, ‘Hey, did you see those three guys out there trying to build a house?’ They were talking about us, not knowing we were in the booth next to them. Soon after, I went to Medline, thinking I’d work there for a year and go back to construction. But I’ve been blessed to be here for 33 years.”

FIRST MEDLINE JOB: “I started as an order picker in Mundelein, Illinois, at the corporate office for about 13 years before I moved to Texas. I’ve jumped around to a lot of different spots in multiple roles—on the receiving dock, in home patient care, as international shipping coordinator, as a special projects coordinator and eventually into the warehouse, where I’ve gone from receiving lead to supervisor and to the spot I am now as replenishment supervisor.”

MY WORK IN A SENTENCE:

“My role is to replenish warehouse locations with product so orders can be

picked and sent out to the customer in as timely a fashion as possible.”

THE BIGGEST CHANGE:

“Technology. We barely had computers when I first started. We were working off index cards and triple carboncopy pick tickets. When I started in the warehouse, we’d look through index cards to find where items were located. AutoStore™ is light years ahead.”

family time, hanging out at the house, doing whatever makes the family happy.”

NO. 1 LESSON FROM MEDLINE: “Stay calm and get the facts and data before you make decisions. No assumptions, just facts.”

AT HOME: “I’m in a blended family—my wife Irene and our four sons and two daughters, plus 10 grandkids. I love

OUTSIDE MEDLINE, YOU’LL FIND ME … “Working on my honey-do list, which I don’t mind. I also love to go fishing. I’ve been doing it since I was 5 or 6 with my dad and uncles. I enjoy sports—going to a baseball game or whatever good game I can find. I’ve lived in Texas for 20 years, but I’m still a big Chicago Bears and Cubs fan.”

HIDDEN TALENT: “Growing

saxophone. I don’t think a lot of people at work know that.”

WHAT HAS KEPT ME AT MEDLINE? “I enjoy the work I’m doing. I like to share the knowledge I’ve built over the years. I want to help Medline grow and prosper. You can still grow in a company this size, starting at the bottom and working your way up. At a lot of companies, you can’t do that. At Medline, if you have the ability and the desire, they’ll teach you. I try to help everyone who’s under me because I want to help them move up to the next level, too.”

Fred Alfaro works closely with members of his replenishment team in Wilmer, Texas, where he has spent more than 20 of his 30-plus years at Medline.
