Let’s Save Our Forest with GIS

(Geographic Information System) Do you guys know about Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)? In Indonesian it means tujuan pembangunan berkelanjutan. What actually SDG is?

So, SDG is a global action plan that is agreed on by world leaders with a focus on putting an end to various world problems such as poverty, education, social inequality, environment, etc. The SDG itself contains 17 goals with 169 measurable targets that are expected to be achieved by 2030. Every country contributes to achieving the goals and targets.

Well, how exactly Indonesia implements SDG? How is the role of Geodesy and Geomatics in implementing SDG? Check out!

Now, let’s take a look at SDG number 15; Life on Land, which states that humans have to manage forests sustainability. Yes, just like all you guys know, there are many ecosystem services that have been given for human life. In fact, there is the term “forest is the lungs of the world”, which provides the greatest amount of oxygen supply. But ironically, the earth loses 13 million hectares of forest each year (UNEP, 2018).

One of the biggest causes is forest fire (CIFOR, 2013). Forest fire is a global issue that is considered as a threat to sustainable development because its direct effect on ecosystem (United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction, 2002), its contributions on increasing carbon emissions and the impact it has on biodiversity.

For example, the release of harmful gases into the atmosphere that potentially causes global warming.

And this is contrary to SDG number 13; Climate Action, where humans should take action to fight climate change. From here, forest fires need to be identified and monitored so it can be overcome and not be repeated in the following year.

Indonesia is one of the countries with the largest forest area. In fact Indonesia has a nickname, “zamrud khatulistiwa”. That is because Indonesia has green landscape that looks like an emerald when seen from the sky, and its location crossed by the equator. However, Indonesia also loses its forests rapidly each year.

Crisis on Earth-12!

CIFOR (Center for International Forestry Research) stated that 1.6 million hectares of land and forest in Indonesia has burned in 2019 and became the worst forest fire since 2015 that burned 2.5 million hectares of land and forest. This is a serious problem. And it is an obligation to all levels of society to manage forests properly and also sustainably.

Nowadays, forest fires in Indonesia are seen as a regional and global disaster. But why? Because the gas produced by the forest fire potentially causes the greenhouse effect and also global warming. It also affects health such as Upper Respiratory Tract Infection (URI). Other than that, the impact of forest fire in Indonesia not only affects locals, but also neighbouring countries.

From the problems that arise from forest fires, where and how is the role of Geodesy and Geomatics? Using geospatial information, those problems can be resolved and also monitored.

These days, geospatial information has been used rapidly and started to believe its importance. The one that understands how to generate, manage, present, and analyse geospatial information is us as Geodesy and Geomatics students.

How is geospatial information utilized? Public service based on Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing can be used to facilitate information provision to the government as well as the local community. In case of forest fires, potential hotspots and smoke distribution prediction systems can be built based on GIS and remote sensing. ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute) has once published that since the beginning of 2019 until now, more that 302 thousand hotspots have been monitored in at least 4 provinces with the largest number of events, Riau Province, Central Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, and Papua. With these systems, the government is easier to arrange strategy on forest fires suppression, and also as an indicator for the field official on suppressing the forest fires.

Furthermore, early warning systems can be used for potential forest fires or when the forest fires occur. The concept of an early warning system is to connect government and local communities if there is potential forest fire. As well to provide information on what to do if there is a forest fire.

For example, if the smoke is already acute, there will be a recommendation to wear a mask and also restrictions for going outside buildings.

Well, by developing the systems above, we are indirectly actualizing SDG goals to make earth a much healthier place. Local communities will get used to technologies that can make activities a lot more effective. Imagine if all information are integrated and GIS-based, life will be much easier and also forests in Indonesia will be more wellmaintained, right?
