Here, we revisit some of the brand’s key milestones and celebrate the people who have moulded Priceline into the company it is today – including YOU.

Where it all began

Priceline was founded in 1982 by New Clicks – a group of healthcare retail chains – primarily serving as a beauty retailer. The first Priceline store was opened in Highpoint, Victoria, and quickly became the city’s go-to destination for beauty and wellness essentials. Priceline expanded rapidly in its early years, with stores opening up in both city and regional areas around the country.

After working in overseas pharmacies for many years, forward-thinking Pharmacist Andrew Rewell returned home to Victoria in 1988 and, full of inspiration, bought his father’s Pakenham Pharmacy. Alongside junior business partners Jeff Thom and Karen Dougall (who still work in the Pakenham Pharmacy today), Rewell soon saw greater potential for his small company and decided to partner with New Clicks to leverage Priceline’s retailing expertise into a pharmacy model. Throughout the 2000s, Priceline Pharmacy boomed and became widely recognised as a reputable destination for health, wellness and beauty needs.

Look and feel

While it’s difficult to imagine Priceline without its iconic magenta facade, the brand has sported a few striking looks in its 40-year history. When Priceline was launched in 1982, the store was known for its red text logo. As the brand grew and began to move into the pharmacy space, it adopted a modern red, white and black look with a sleek new font. Then, in 2008, Priceline underwent a significant rebrand: the stores got a serious makeover and adopted the trademark pink colour scheme that we associate with the brand today.

To coincide with the changing store looks, the Priceline staff uniforms also evolved over the years. From white knee-length dresses with Priceline-branded ties to blue tunic dresses, vivid red vests and the chic black-and-pink ensembles the teams wear now, staff outfits have always been of-the-era.

Now we’re here Priceline store opening in Adelaide’s Myer Centre, 1991.

In 2022, after 40 years of growth, Priceline is exceptionally proud of all its achievements. The brand’s continuing success can be attributed to its incredible staff and customers who have allowed the company to thrive throughout generations. Priceline currently employs over 7000 people and has 470 stores across the country.

Since launching the Priceline Sisterhood Foundation in 2011, over $8.65 million has been raised for its charity partners, including PANDA, Motherless Daughters Australia, Raise Foundation and Dementia Australia. The Priceline Sister Club has 7.5 million members, making it Australia’s largest health and beauty loyalty program, and it has an incredible line-up of brand ambassadors, including the vivacious media personality Chrissie Swan and the iconic Ita Buttrose.

No matter the uniform they wear, the people of Priceline have always been the brand’s defining factor.

A decade of bestsellers

When Audrey Hope was born in 2005, her dad, Priceline Glenorchy Franchise Partner Geoff Hope, never imagined she’d end up the third generation of his family to work in their Priceline store. Audrey’s first shift as a Pharmacy Assistant was “a very ‘proud dad’ moment for me”, says Geoff. Having inherited the store from his Pharmacist mother Elizabeth, who bought the pharmacy over 35 years ago, Geoff considers his work a family affair. “I thought I couldn’t be prouder of the team but watching everyone thrive this year, and now with Audrey here, I am!”

A pharmaceutical family Once a small Soul Pattinson chemist established by matriarch Jane O’Brien and soon converted to a Priceline Franchise, Priceline Pharmacy KippaRing is in the family’s bloodline. After a longstanding career as a trusted Pharmacist – sometimes as “the only person working in my store” – Jane passed the store on to two of her grandchildren, Pharmacists and siblings Andrew and Matilda Twist.

At 85 years old, Jane still assists in the store alongside her grandchildren and daughter Jane Twist, the Retail Manager, and feels lucky to be working with her family on a daily basis.

“Back then, our Managers, Assistant Managers and Trainee Managers were always male. Now they’re all female,” says Nancy. Although many processes have changed (the sisters much prefer scanning barcodes to entering PLU numbers manually), they note that Priceline’s customer service practices are the same now as they were back then.

“We have always greeted everybody,” says Doris. “It’s really important.”

PRICELINE: WHAT WAS IT LIKE BEING A WOMAN IN RADIO IN THE EARLY 2000s? HOW DOES IT COMPARE IN 2022?

CHRISSIE SWAN: I’ve been lucky in that I’ve largely been allowed to run my own race in my career. There have been a few instances where my role as employee and mother have not been properly understood but I feel that’s changing. Perhaps because I’m older and better at communicating my needs. I think I joined the industry when it had started to change for women from just acting in supporting roles to being the main content giver.

Turns out a lot of the iconic health, wellness and beauty advice we were fed in the ’80s doesn’t stack up today

W

hile the ’80s introduced us to many wonderful cultural icons (Wham!, Ghostbusters and the Walkman, anyone?), it also left us with some questionable pearls of wisdom.

Priceline Pharmacist Nancy El-miski and Beauty Advisor Gloria Perez weigh in on some of the most common myths spruiked at the time, and then reframe them for 2022.

1982: SMOKING HAS HEALTH BENEFITS

If you didn’t smoke cigarettes in the ’80s, chances are you stuck out like a sore thumb in social situations. Believe it or not, Priceline actually used to stock them. While that seems completely absurd now, the ’80s still held some old myths around smoking from the days when it was thought to have health benefits (crazy, right?). From weight loss to stress relief, falsehoods around the supposed ‘benefits’ of smoking were common up until the mid-’80s when anti-smoking messages began to emerge.

Attitudes towards smoking have evolved dramatically over the past 40 years as we continue to learn about the myriad health issues caused by cigarettes. Despite this, according to the Cancer Council, around 24,000 Australians die each year from smoking-related illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, stomach ulcers and various types of cancer, proving that we still have a long way to go. One of the major myths that experts have discredited is that smoking helps to reduce stress levels – we now know that the habit can actually increase feelings of anxiety and tension over time. “Nicotine creates an immediate sense of relaxation so people who smoke may believe it reduces stress and anxiety,” says Nancy. “To break the habit, adopt appropriate forms of stress relief such as taking a walk, having a hot shower or meditating.”

We can also agree that the age-old excuse “it’s OK to be a social smoker” has no legs (surprised?). “There’s no healthy level of smoking,” says Nancy.

“Every cigarette does damage to your body and you’re risking developing a dangerous habit.” The good news is, it’s never too late to quit; the benefits begin the moment you give smokes the flick. “Your heart rate reduces within 20 minutes, the carbon monoxide in your blood drops in less than a day and in a year’s time your risk of heart disease will be halved,” says Nancy.

FOR A HEALTHY TAN

In 1980s Australia, summertime was all about getting a ‘healthy’ bronzed glow. One of the most common ways to achieve said glow was to lather up with oil and bake in the sun for a few hours (the coconutty scent of tanning oil still takes us back).

Oils contained little to no SPF, and we were encouraged to reapply them regularly throughout the day for an even summer tan.

Thankfully, conversations around tanning and sun protection have done a full 180 since the 1980s. “There’s no such thing as a healthy tan. Even if you’re wearing SPF, any form of tanning or sun exposure is bad for your skin,” says Nancy.

“The increased UV exposure through tanning causes collagen breakdown, increased wrinkling, sun spots and thinning of the skin.” The best way to achieve a summer tan? Fake it. There are a multitude of self-tanning products on the market for all skin types and tones – many of them actually work doubletime by hydrating your skin as they bronze. But it’s important to remember that most fake tanning products do not offer sun protection so you must still apply sunscreen and wear protective clothing when you’re outdoors.

“Make sure you’re wearing a high-SPF sunscreen every day and reapply every two hours,” says Nancy. “The Quick Flick’s Finishing Spray can even be used over makeup.”

1982: FAD DIETS WILL HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT

Made famous by our favourite celebs, these eating plans defined an era of weight loss trends. “These ‘diets’ may provide short-term results but are hard to sustain and, ultimately, deprive you of the essential nutrients only balanced eating can offer,” says Nancy. They may, however, give you a good laugh.

The Grapefruit Diet: The ‘Hollywood diet’ involved eating a grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice with every meal, based on the myth that it helps burn fat (spoiler alert: it doesn’t).

The Cabbage Soup Diet: This diet involved consuming plain old cabbage soup two to three times a day – and the stricter you were with the diet, the better the results you got. Needless to say, any ‘results’ were shown to be very short-lived.

The Cottage Cheese Diet: Rapid weight loss was promised if you ate nothing but cottage cheese for three days.

Turns out all the diet achieved was putting you off cottage cheese for life.

‘Healthy’ snacks exploded onto the market in the 1980s and transformed the way we ate with their ‘low-fat’ claims. Turns out muesli bars, fat-free yoghurts and fruit juices aren’t as healthy as we once thought (perhaps that’s why they tasted so good). The common factor? Bucketloads of sugar.

Today, we’re wiser about the treats we eat – and even how we eat them.

We’d be lying if we said we didn’t get excited as kids when our mums gave us flat lemonade to treat bouts of gastro. However, you may be surprised (or disappointed) to learn it might have done more harm than good. “Drinking flat lemonade isn’t the best thing for dehydration – it can actually make it worse,” says Nancy. “Due to its high sugar content, lemonade draws water out of the body, worsening dehydration.” These days, it’s best to treat dehydration with oral rehydration fluids, which replenish your body’s salt and fluid levels.

CUCUMBER ON EYES

Neon

Ultra-bright colours characterised the 1980s, with fluoro one of the top themes of the decade. The era’s style philosophy was all about standing out, and neon graced everything from clothing and hair accessories to makeup.

Today’s advice is to apply blush to the apples of your cheeks; back then it was worn in a high, angled ‘stripe’. “This old-school contouring technique is called blush draping,” says Sarah, “and when done correctly, it can have a beautiful sculpting effect.” To bring it into the now, use a tapered blush brush to lightly sweep powder, or a finger or makeup sponge to apply cream blush, at the top of your cheekbones, blending well up to the temples.

But it has its downsides. “Heat styling fries the hair’s outer layer – the cuticle,” says Kat. “When that’s damaged, hair loses elasticity and feels dry and brittle, leading to split ends, breakage and frizz.” And while big is back, frizz can stay in the ‘80s. rom menarche (when periods begin during puberty) to menopause (when periods stop permanently), the average woman will have had 450 periods in her lifetime. And while these 2000 days (give or take) spent bleeding are significant, there’s often little attention paid to the other stages of our menstrual cycle. The most important thing to remember is that everyone’s cycle is different. “While there are general indicators throughout the month, it’s important to get to know your own body’s rhythm,” says Priceline Pharmacist Soumya Pandya. “If your period comes too early or too late, these are signs of a hormonal imbalance, which you would need to see your healthcare professional to treat.”

For women who are trying to get pregnant, it’s become common practice to track menstrual cycles using an app like Clue or Flo. However, it’s beneficial for anyone who gets a period to be aware of changes throughout the month. By taking note of how you feel (physically, mentally and emotionally) and understanding how fluctuations in hormones impact energy levels, metabolism, sleep quality and mood, it’s possible to optimise your daily routines and get the best out of each phase, says Soumya.

Phase one:

The onset of your period marks the first day of the menstrual cycle. While the uterine lining is being shed, the brain is producing gonadotropin-releasing hormones (GnRH) and follicle-stimulating hormones (FSH). This is reflected by symptoms such as low mood, cramps or aches, and heightened emotions. “Slow down, rest and be kind to yourself,” says Soumya. “Your period should not be painful. Mild discomfort is OK but anything severe could be a sign that something isn’t right.”

The days between the end of the period and ovulation are called the follicular phase, and are marked by the maturing of follicles and release of luteinising hormone. “An increase in oestrogen levels is associated with higher energy, a switched-on metabolism and faster recovery, so exercising will feel easier and you generally recover more quickly,” says Soumya. Fill your diary with dates this week (you’ll be feeling confident and glowy), work up a sweat with high-intensity training and weights (particularly if your goal is weight loss) and even book a wax (pain threshold is thought to be highest during this phase).

If you’re trying to get pregnant, this is go time. “It’s likely you’ll have a higher sex drive, increased appetite and feel more alert and awake during this phase,” says Soumya.

But at the tail end progesterone rises, which can lead to less focus or cloudy memory. When you reach perimenopause (the transition into menopause), ovulation becomes more unpredictable. One of the biggest (and easiest) mistakes we can make when approaching difficult conversations with men is pressuring them to speak. After raising the topic in a calm manner – whether it concerns mental health, visiting a healthcare professional or otherwise – let them come to you at a pace they feel comfortable with.

Once they’ve responded to your approach with an eagerness to talk, the key to engaging in health-related conversations with men is to emphasise two things, says Priceline Pharmacist Kieran Baker. “Firstly, a motivating factor. Foods containing complex carbohydrates (e.g. peas, beans and wholegrains) take longer for your body to break down, so they stay in your gut for longer and go through a fermenting process where the bacteria produces gas. To reduce bloating and discomfort, avoid carbonated drinks (such as soft drinks and mineral water) as these are a combination of liquid and gas. Lactose, gluten and alcohol can also cause gas and bloating, so it’s important to identify your triggers and avoid them as much as possible. To help relieve the symptoms you’re experiencing, try drinking peppermint tea, taking charcoal capsules (to neutralise the gut) and incorporating pro- or prebiotics into your daily routine.

It sounds like you’re experiencing a recurring urinary tract infection, or UTI. These are very common – one in two women will get a UTI in their lifetime. A UTI is a bacterial infection of the urinary passageway and the most common symptoms include a burning sensation when passing urine, the need to urinate in small amounts and pain in the lower abdomen. UTIs are not sexually transmitted, but sexual intercourse increases the likelihood of bacteria coming in contact with your urinary passage. To reduce the chances of getting a UTI, urinate before and after sex to stop bacteria from lingering in the urethra or bladder. Your Pharmacist will be able to recommend a treatment to help clear up your UTI. They may suggest a urinary alkaliniser for a burning sensation when urinating or cranberry supplements to prevent bacteria from attaching to your urethra. If your symptoms linger for a few days you should visit your GP.

The dishes that defined a decade take centre stage in this retro-inspired menu. With a few choice substitutions (think a booze-free cocktail and frozen yoghurt dessert), we’ve brought classic ’80s dinner party fare into the 21st century.

Super green cob loaf Prep: 20 mins Cook: 20 mins Serves: 6–8 1 tbsp olive oil 6 spring onions, finely chopped 1 small bunch kale, leaves coarsely chopped (ribs and stalks discarded) ½ punnet (60g) baby spinach 500g firm ricotta 500g natural Greek-style yoghurt Finely grated rind and juice of 1 lemon ¼ cup each finely chopped dill, mint and parsley, plus extra to serve 1 small round cob loaf, seeded Crunchy vegetables, such as baby carrots, radish, asparagus and sugar snap peas, to serve

Prawn cocktail salad Prep: 20 mins Cook: 25 mins (plus marinating) Serves: 6–8 250g cherry tomatoes ¹/³ cup extra-virgin olive oil 1.2kg green prawns, peeled and cleaned Juice of 2 lemons 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 long red chilli, finely chopped 2 tbsp buttermilk 2 baby cos lettuce, cut into wedges 2 avocados, cut into wedges 1 Lebanese cucumber, cut into ribbons Mint leaves and lemon wedges, to serve AVOCADO PUREE 2 avocados, coarsely chopped ¹/³ cup buttermilk Juice of 1 lemon 1 garlic clove

1 Preheat oven to 200°C. Spread tomatoes on a baking tray lined with baking paper, drizzle with 1 tbsp of the oil and season to taste. Roast for 10–15 minutes until tender and skins start to split. Set aside to cool.

2 Meanwhile, combine prawns, half the lemon juice, half the garlic, chilli and 2 tbsp of the oil in a bowl, season to taste, stir to combine and refrigerate to marinate for 20 minutes.

3 To make the avocado puree, process ingredients in a food processor to a silky-smooth texture; season to taste.

4 Process half the tomatoes in a food processor with buttermilk and remaining lemon juice and garlic until smooth; season to taste.

5 Preheat a chargrill to medium-high heat. Add prawns and chargrill, turning once, for 3 minutes until cooked through.

6 To serve, spread avocado puree on a platter. Top with cos wedges, avocado, cucumber, prawns and roast tomatoes.

Drizzle with tomato dressing, scatter with mint and serve with lemon wedges.

1 Preheat oven to 180°C. Line 2 large baking trays with baking paper.

Heat half the oil in a large frypan over medium-high heat. Add the spring onion and cook, stirring occasionally, for 2 minutes until tender. Transfer to a food processor.

2 Add kale to the pan in batches and cook, stirring occasionally, for 3 minutes until tender. Add spinach to the final batch for the last minute of cooking. Add to the food processor and process until smooth. Add the ricotta then process to combine.

3 Transfer to a large bowl, add yoghurt, lemon rind, lemon juice and herbs; season to taste.

4 Cut a hole 4cm wide and deep from the top of the cob loaf and reserve.

Remove the bread from the centre of the loaf, leaving a 2cm-thick shell. Tear bread into 3cm pieces and spread in a single layer on one of the trays. Drizzle with remaining oil.

5 Spoon the spinach mixture into the bread shell, top with the reserved bread piece and place on remaining tray. Bake both trays for 20 minutes or until golden. Scatter cob loaf with extra herbs and serve with vegetables and bread pieces.

Serve with a scattering of health-boosting nuts and seeds – think almonds, pistachios, flaxseeds, sunflower seeds and pepitas – for added crunch.

Use a coconut-based yoghurt for a dairy-free alternative.

Black forest Viennetta Prep: 1 hour Cook: 10 mins (plus freezing, draining overnight) Serves: 8 1.5kg natural Greek-style yoghurt ²/³ cup maple syrup, plus 2 tbsp extra 2 tsp vanilla bean paste Cacao powder, for dusting Cacao nibs, for scattering Cherries, to serve CHERRY SYRUP 150g cherries, pitted ¼ cup (60mL) maple syrup Juice of ½ orange CHOCOLATE GLAZE ¹/³ cup coconut oil, melted 2 tbsp maple syrup 2 tbsp cacao powder, sifted 1 Whisk ¾ of the yoghurt in a bowl with maple syrup and vanilla. Transfer to a large shallow container and freeze, whisking occasionally for the first few hours until frozen.

2 Put remaining yoghurt in a bowl, refrigerate overnight and drain excess liquid before mixing with the extra maple syrup until smooth. Transfer to a piping bag and refrigerate.

3 To make cherry syrup, stir ingredients in a saucepan over medium-high heat.

Bring to a simmer and cook for 10 mins until cherries are tender and liquid is syrupy. Strain, reserving cherries and syrup separately. Refrigerate to chill.

4 For glaze, stir ingredients in a bowl until smooth. Cool to room temperature.

5 Line a deep 11cm x 20cm loaf tin with plastic wrap and freeze.

Remove frozen yoghurt from the freezer and cut into small chunks.

Process in batches.

6 Spread ¹/³ of the frozen yoghurt in the base of the tin (keep remaining frozen yoghurt in the freezer). Scatter with ¹/³ of the cherries, drizzle with a little chocolate glaze and dust with cacao powder.

Freeze for 1 hour, then repeat, layering so you have three layers, reserving some of the glaze to serve. Freeze top layer for 1 hour until firm then pipe drained yoghurt mixture over the top. Scatter with cacao nibs, dust with cacao powder and freeze overnight.

7 Just before serving, gently heat the reserved chocolate glaze. Remove Viennetta from the tin and place on a chilled platter. Top with fresh cherries and serve with cherry syrup and glaze.

The booze-free piña colada Prep: 10 mins Serves 6–8 1 ripe pineapple, peeled and diced, or 500g frozen pineapple chunks 1 cup coconut water 1 cup unsweetened pineapple juice Juice of 2 limes, plus slices to serve 1 cup ice cubes Cherries, to serve 1 Spread pineapple on a lined tray and freeze for 2 hours until semi-frozen, or use frozen pineapple chunks. Place in a blender, add coconut water, pineapple juice, lime juice and ice cubes. Blend until smooth and garnish with pineapple leaves, lime slices and a cherry.
