As previously noted, the latest Performance Pay Tracking Period began on July 1st. We are striving to meet the Patient Satisfaction goal of a ≥ 65% rating (experience as “Excellent”). In order to create a comfortable margin of performance, while continuing to improve the patient experience, we would like to share some feedback from recent patient focus groups. The two areas that patients value the most are: 1. Communication from the treating crew: “Explain treatment options and procedures” “Provide reassurance and compassionate communication with the patient”

2. Setting clear expectations: “Set transport length expectation” “Set a triage level expectation before arriving at the hospital”

As previously announced, Mecklenburg County is making changes to the health insurance offerings for 2017. Every eligible Medic employee will need to elect or opt-out of health insurance for the coming year. The medical plans for 2017 are a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) or a Qualified – High Deductible High Plan (Q-HDHP) with a Health Savings Account (HSA). No matter which health insurance plan you choose, you’ll receive the following benefits: 1. Access to the same Cigna network of doctors, specialists and hospitals 2. Preventive services covered at 100% 3. Plan benefits covering all the same services, tests, procedures and prescriptions 4. After you meet deductible, Cigna will cover 80% while you pay 20% until you meet your out of pocket maximum 5. Exclusive Cigna discounts on health and wellness programs 6. Online tools and services help you get healthy and stay healthy SO WHAT ARE THE MEDICAL PLAN DIFFERENCES? PPO stands for Preferred Provider Organizations which are considered a more traditional form of health insurance because you pay a predetermined co-pay amount for a visit to a doctor, ER, urgent care or for a prescription. For the convenience of co-pays, you have higher premiums taken out of each paycheck. Q-HDHP stands for Qualified High Deductible Health Plan and may be called a Consumer Driven Health Plan because it is built for those who want take control of more aspects of their health insurance spending. You have lower premiums taken out of each paycheck, but you pay the higher Cigna discounted amount for a visit to a doctor, ER, urgent care or for a prescription, instead of the set co-pay amount. HSA stands for Health Savings Account which allows the eligible participants of a Q-HDHP to put away money pre-tax to use for allowable medical expenses. The HSA is owned by the employee and any balance rolls over from year to year, accrues interest and is portable in the event you retire or change employers. WHERE CAN I LEARN MORE? There are three ways you can learn more: 1. Short video to explain this further: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9K9Xs40-cY 2. At an October Inservice (Admin will be required to attend a session) 3. A couple weeks ago, one local family found out just how dangerous Anaphylaxis can be. A family dialed 911 after they noticed the symptoms. Dispatcher Chris Craddock gave instructions over the phone to use an Epi-pen to treat the allergic attack. Chris stayed on the phone until our first responder partners Davidson Fire Davidson arrived. Additional lifesaving treatments were administered on-scene. The patient was transported to Novant Huntersville by Kelly McCarthy and Jose Rivera. If not for the family staying calm, following instructions, and being prepared with an Epi-pen, the situation would have been more challenging. Great job to the Medic team, Emergency Medical Dispatcher, Chris Craddock, Paramedic Kelly McCarthy, and Paramedic Crew2014 Chief SEPTEMBER Jose Rivera.

Take the edge off. When you’re tired, your body may be more sensitive to pain. How to fix it? Get more sleep. One study showed that mildly sleep-deprived people had less pain sensitivity during the day when they increased their sleep time at night.2

Finish strong. Research suggests that increasing sleeping time can improve athletic performance.3 Snooze to lose. Getting the rest you need may help your diet and exercise efforts. Dieters in a sleep-lab study who were well rested lost more fat than those who were sleep deprived. When dieters got less sleep, they felt hungrier during the day.4 Give your skin a healthy glow. Deep sleep is the prime time for the skin to repair itself. In a clinical trial, those who

Stay away from things that upset you before bedtime. Try aromatherapy. Breathing in scents from lavender and other essential oils may help you relax and sleep at night.
