As previously noted, the latest Performance Pay Tracking Period began on July 1st. We are striving to meet the Patient Satisfaction goal of a ≥ 68% rating (experience as “Excellent”). In order to create a comfortable margin of performance, while continuing to improve the patient experience, we would like to share some feedback from recent patient focus groups. The two areas that patients value the most are: 1. Communication from the treating crew: “Explain treatment options and procedures” “Provide reassurance and compassionate communication with the patient” 2. Setting clear expectations: “Set transport length expectation” “Set a triage level expectation before arriving at the hospital”

I only tried to quit smoking once and made really good progress with it. I made it six months after quitting cold turkey and thought I had finally made it. Everyone was proud of me. And then I found myself at a party one night with a few friends. Everyone was smoking and I told myself, “I can just have a few cigarettes tonight and get back on track tomorrow.” That was a lie. I was back on my pack-a-day habit for the next two years. I had failed.

I only tried to quit smoking once and made really good progress with it. I made it six months after quitting cold turkey and thought I had finally made it. Everyone was proud of me. And then I found myself at a party one night with a few friends. Everyone was smoking and I told myself “I can just have a few cigarettes tonight and get back on track tomorrow.” That was a lie. I was back on my pack-a-day habit for the next two years. I had failed. Fast forward to January of 2013. My wife was six months pregnant with our baby girl, Raegan LeeAnn. I was taking a break one evening at work, having a smoke while looking at some ultrasound pictures that we received earlier that day. I made the decision right then and there that I was done smoking. I crushed a brand new pack of cigarettes that I had just bought on my way to work that afternoon and tossed them in the dumpster. You see, for me, that’s all I needed. I was willing to do anything to ensure that I would be here for as long as possible for my little girl. Quitting cold turkey was definitely one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. The first two weeks were not only hard on me, but probably for my wife too. After all, she had to live with me and my irritability. But after those initial weeks, it got easier and easier. And the benefits were almost immediate. I was breathing easier and fuller. My blood pressure fell into a good range. Food tasted better. I was saving money and had a significant health insurance premium drop.
That was two and a half years ago and I still have not had a cigarette. I can hang out with friends that smoke and not be tempted at all. In fact, I sometimes have to excuse myself from people when they are smoking because I simply cannot stand the smell. I know without a doubt that I will NEVER smoke again. I have to toot my own horn from time to time when people ask how I quit. I did it on sheer willpower and determination. But I owe all my thanks to my daughter. She doesn’t know it but she is the reason behind everything I do, including losing forty pounds since January but that’s another story…
