As previously noted, the latest Performance Pay Tracking Period began on July 1st. We are striving to meet the Patient Satisfaction goal of a ≥ 68% rating (experience as “Excellent”). In order to create a comfortable margin of performance, while continuing to improve the patient experience, we would like to share some feedback from recent patient focus groups. The two areas that patients value the most are: 1. Communication from the treating crew: “Explain treatment options and procedures” “Provide reassurance and compassionate communication with the patient” 2. Setting clear expectations: “Set transport length expectation” “Set a triage level expectation before arriving at the hospital”

I

The benefit to quitting several times is that now I know how I quit; know that I am not a ‘cold-turkey’ quitter and that I need to address both the chemical addiction and the physical habit in order to make it stick. Everyone is different and no two smoers have identical habits or triggers related to smoking. Elisabeth Mitchell Medic’s, Education Assistant

QUIT. START AGAIN... QUIT. (IT’S NOT EASY...)

I have smoked on and off since I was a teenager; I have quit several times and unfortunately started back up again several times. Quitting smoking is so difficult because it is available, accessible and still to some degree socially acceptable. I decided to quit the beginning of this year when we moved into our new home; I was tired of having a smelly ashtray on my porch and constantly carrying the lingering burning smell on my clothes and in my hair. I wanted a fresh start in a new place and I wanted to leave my dirty habit behind.

“Quitting smoking is easy; I’ve done it a thousand times.” - Mark Twain. The benefit to quitting several times is that now I know how I quit; I know that I am not a ‘cold-turkey’ quitter and that I need to address both the chemical addiction and the physical habit in order to make it stick. Everyone is different and no two smokers have identical habits or triggers related to smoking. This is my second time quitting while using nicotine patches; they really help me by quelling that anxious need to smoke. Having a smoking cessation aid helps me to reserve my energy for the daunting task of tackling the physical addiction. During the years (more than I would like to admit) I spent smoking I cultivated many rituals that revolved around cigarettes, all had to be unlearned in order to successfully quit. I used cigarettes to time my drives and my breaks when working, I used them help wake up in the morning with my cup of coffee and to go to sleep at night. If I really thought about it I found a way to incorporate them into every day to day activity in my life. I look back at the money I was spending and it makes my head spin; each time I went to the gas station I would get cigarettes, a drink, a snack and no trip was under $11.00, that every other day all year long put me a totally of roughly $2000 per year not including the insurance increase and those days/weekends when I probably smoked far more than average. I was spending thousands of dollars and countless hours outside in remote smoking areas each year and I got nothing out of it.

I would be lying if I said I was done quitting, but each day is a little easier. I would still like a cigarette, and I know that the familiar urge will strike occasionally for the rest of my life but I am not willing to start again I have come too far and I have too many good things that have come about since quitting. I am saving money, I am able to spend more time doing thigs I actually enjoy, my health has improved and I my biggest best reason never to never start again: the anticipated arrival of my first child due this December. I have too many positive things to focus on now that my mind and body is not monopolized by smoking. It is not easy but it is too costly for me to continue.

JUL COMPLIANCE Post 61’s gate is currently without power. And it will remain inoperable until further notice. However, the gate should be open and available for use. If you find it closed, feel free to slide it open. The reason for the outage: Blue Line’s construction. The fence at Post 61 is scheduled to come down. Ultimately, the fence and gate will be reconfigured for use. We may temporarily lose access to Post 61 during the construction. CMED has a contingency plan for CFD station 1. The bay doors are working. If you encounter a problem with a door opener, turn it into logistics for replacement. For more information, contact Bob Francis at 704-943-6251; bobf@medic911.com.

Please review the following policy change / revision, effective July 1, 2015:

*There are no referral bonuses for any other Agency positions at this time.

3.2 Tuition Reimbursement Guidelines to be eligible for tuition reimbursement: • You MUST fill out the application for reimbursement before the start of the class or program. If you do not have this submitted prior to the class or program, you will be put at the end of the queue and are not guaranteed reimbursement. • Give the reimbursement request to your supervisor or manager for their signature approval. • Your supervisor or manager will check with HR for available funds. • HR will notify you that either there are funds available for reimbursement OR that you’ll be put in the queue so that if funds become available, they will be paid on a first come, first serve basis. HR will retain your request for reimbursement. • Complete the class with a satisfactory grade (i.e., C or “Pass”). • Submit transcript and/or grade report along with proof of payment within 30 days of completion or by June 30th, whichever is sooner.

3.11 Relocation Benefit A benefit of up to $2,500 has been implemented to reimburse eligible moving expenses (IRS regulated) for Paramedics and EMDs. The relocation benefit breaks down as follows: • Paramedics/EMDs moving 100 -1000 miles: up to $1,500 • Paramedics/EMDs moving 1001+ miles: up to $2,500

*Keep in mind that this is an IRS regulated benefit, therefore, receipts and proof of completion must show specific descriptions of courses/seminars, grades/completion and details of payments made. Below are approved changes made to the referral bonus, sign-on bonus and relocation bonus policies. These changes were made with the intent to promote filling the positions that are the most difficult to recruit and retain for the Agency. The need for qualified EMDs and Paramedics is in high demand for Medic which ultimately impacted the reevaluation of these policies. 3.6 Employee Referral Bonus Program • A total of $1,000 will be paid in two installments for each new regular, full-time Paramedic and EMD candidate an employee identifies and successfully helps Medic recruit, provided both parties are still employed at Medic and in good standing. • $500 will be paid after the referred Paramedic/EMD is released from their FTO/CTO. The remaining balance of $500 will be paid upon the referred Paramedic/EMD’s one-year employment anniversary. • In the event that a newly hired employee is transferred or demoted before the time of payout, the referral bonus will be forfeited for both parties.

By accepting relocation funds from the Agency, the recipient agrees to commit to one-year of full-time service. Any employee that voluntarily terminates employment sooner that one-year from the date funds are given, will be required to immediately repay the Agency at 50% of the total amount received. 3.14 Sign-On Bonus Paramedics • A $2,500 sign-on bonus has been implemented to encourage and facilitate the recruitment and retention of qualified Paramedics. • Paramedics hired for a full-time bonus-designated position will be eligible for $1,000 upon their release from their FTO, with the remaining balance of $1,500 payable upon their one-year employment anniversary, as long as the individual is still employed by the Agency and is in good standing. Emergency Medical Dispatchers • A $1,000 sign-on bonus has been implemented to encourage and facilitate the recruitment and retention of certified EMDs. • EMDs hired for a full-time, bonus-designated position will be eligible for the $500 sign-on bonus upon the release from their CTO, with the remaining balance of $500 payable upon their one-year employment anniversary, as long as the individual is still employed and in good standing with the Agency. In the event that a newly hired employee is transferred or demoted before the time of payout, the sign-on bonus will be forfeited.
