This is the Learning Lab, Medic 102.
However, change isn’t easy. It’s HARD, mind-grueling, ‘roll up your sleeves’, type of work. “What type of work, works best for an organization like ours?”, Elizabeth, a cardiac med student inquires. “Great question”, Doc Studnek smiles. It is often said that it takes three things for organizational improvement: 1. Will 2. Ideas 3. Execution At Medic, we have the will to improve how we do are work. We are constantly striving to improve. Ideas, as we have mentioned before, are plentiful. However, execution is where the rubber meets the road; it’s the hard

As previously noted, the latest Performance Pay Tracking Period began on March1st. We are striving to meet the Patient Satisfaction goal of a ≥ 68% rating (experience as “Excellent”). In order to create a comfortable margin of performance, while continuing to improve the patient experience, we would like to share some feedback from recent patient focus groups. The two areas that patients value the most are: 1. Communication from the treating crew: “Explain treatment options and procedures” “Provide reassurance and compassionate communication with the patient” 2. Setting clear expectations: “Set transport length expectation” “Set a triage level expectation before arriving at the hospital”

Date: March 12, 2015 To: All Agency Paramedics From: Jim Lockard, Education Quality Specialist Reference: 2015 North Carolina Paramedic Competition Medical Services is currently accepting letters of interest for Paramedic teams to represent the Agency at the annual Regional paramedic competition sponsored by the North Carolina Office of EMS. The regional competition will be held July 17th. A first place finish at the regional competition secures a spot at the state paramedic competition held at the state EMS conference in Greensboro in October, 2015. Historically Medic has sponsored 2 teams for regional competition. If there is greater interest, an inhouse competition will be held in April, 2015 to determine the 2 top teams. The winning team(s) will represent the Agency at the regional competition with the second place team included if regional positions are available. The team winning the regional competition will advance to the final competition in Greensboro. Medic will sponsor any Agency team(s) moving on to the state competition. Qualifying criteria include: • Team members must be locally credentialed Paramedics with Mecklenburg EMS Agency. • The team must be available to travel to the regional site on 7/17/15. This may require taking time off or switching days. • The team must be available to travel to Greensboro on 10/4/15 for the final competition, if selected. ***Time associated with any required internal run off and participation in the regional competition is voluntary and will not be paid time. The deadline for entries is April 17, 2015. Please forward any questions or letters of interest to Jim Lockard (704)943-6144 or jiml2@medic911. com. Thank you and good luck.

Medic has completed our yearly Medicare compliance audit for billing. Our compliance attorney has suggested that we remove the signature option “No Access to Patient” from the pick list, in Siren. Unfortunately, the current option does not indicate whether the patient was actually capable of signing, at the time of transport. To reduce our risk of un-billable transports and to ensure we’re in compliance with Federal billing requirements, the “No Access to Patient” option will be removed in the near future. Please see your supervisor if you have additional questions.
PLEASE NOTE: If your Annual Performance Review was in March and you did not attend the March class, you must contact Amy Broughton to attend a April class.
INFORMATION UPDATES • Please register for your Corporate Compliance Training session through LMS. • The duration of the Medic Safety & Compliance Training sessions is up to 4 hours. • Attendees will be paid for the total time spent in class. • Each employee, with an Annual Performance Review within that same month, MUST attend one of the available Compliance Training Sessions. • Compliance sessions are held next to the Medic Fitness Center. For more information on Corporate Compliance Class or if you need directions, please contact Amy Broughton at amyb@medic911.com.

After a long day of filling out applications, take your coffee cup and mix-up a healthy treat! (You deserve it!... Come on...) DARK CHOCOLATE CHERRY ALMOND BARS INGREDIENTS 2¼ C old-fashioned rolled oats ¼ C wheat bran or oat bran ¼ C ground flax seed ½ tsp salt 1 C chopped or slivered almonds 1 C honey 3 tbsp coconut oil 3 tbsp brown sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 C dried tart cherries, chopped ¼ C dark chocolate chips INSTRUCTIONS Line an 8×8 inch or 9×9 inch baking dish with parchment paper so that the edges hang over the sides of the dish. In a large bowl, stir together oats, wheat bran, flax seed, salt, and chopped almonds. In a small saucepan, heat together honey, coconut oil, brown sugar, and vanilla extract over medium heat until coconut oil is melted and brown sugar is dissolved. Bring to a boil and stir for one minute. Remove from heat. Pour over oat mixture and stir until coated. Stir in cherries and dark chocolate chips. Pour mixture into prepared baking dish. Press firmly into the bottom of the pan. (If you do not press mixture firmly into the bottom of the pan, the bars will fall apart later.) Refrigerate for 2 hours before cutting into bars. Store in an airtight container.
