Welcome to Medic 101. I’m Doc Studnek and we are in week four of the Learning Lab. Let’s continue our quest to understand the process Medic uses to guide our Agency. This week, we will be discussing two more steps in the process of developing Medic’s objectives. We call them Abstraction and Strategic Approach.

Abstraction and Strategic Approach are a diverging and converging idea generation and selection process. Similar to last week’s discussion, these two objectives focus on a narrow range of topics. We also developed a set of common themes that could be presented to Agency Leadership. Once those themes are developed, one must ask the following questions: 1. What are the critical issues or areas of opportunity, within each theme?

2. What are the fundamental causes behind the information in each theme?

3. What are the implications of the theme to the organization and organizations purpose?

Why do we ask these questions? The answer is simple, my lofty coeds: to provoke a deeper level of thinking related to the issues or opportunities facing our organization.

Asking questions is fundamentally important when dissecting a complicated problem. Think of how care providers use questions to determine a likely diagnosis for a patient. Sometimes the critical issue is easily identifiable, upon initial assessment. But sometimes, it takes a lot more information to understand an individual’s current acute health need(s).

And what’s the best way to get more information? A question!

This scenario is similar to how we determine our strategic objectives. Sometimes, an organization’s critical issues (or areas of opportunity) are readily apparent and easy to find - using a few questions. Sometimes “clearly delineated” themes, at first blush, can become nuanced and complicated when the questions are brought to light. The ability to pick apart common themes and identify the nuance helps us form a strategic approach that might solve a complicated problem.

The Strategic Approach is the first draft of our Strategic Objectives. It addresses the issues and areas of opportunity identified in Abstraction. So again, we are taking a set of ideas and converging. Next to selection of the strategic objectives, this convergence is perhaps the most difficult step in the process. This step requires us to utilize learned information and clearly articulate a direction the Agency may want to create, with consensus and commonality of definitions.

Well, it’s been a fun-filled week in the Learning Lab. Next week, we will tackle the most

difficult step: selecting our strategic objectives from the numerous approaches we

have identified.

As previously noted, the latest Performance Pay Tracking Period began on November 1st. We are striving to meet the Patient Satisfaction goal of a ≥ 68% rating (experience as “Excellent”).

In order to create a comfortable margin of performance, while continuing to improve the patient experience, we would like to share some feedback from recent patient focus groups.

The two areas that patients value the most are: 1. Communication from the treating crew: “Explain treatment options and procedures” “Provide reassurance and compassionate communication with the patient” 2. Setting clear expectations: “Set transport length expectation” “Set a triage level expectation before arriving at the hospital”

In recent months there have been several preventable accidents that were related to space cushion, misjudged distance, excess speed and improper backing. A preventable accident is any accident where an Agency vehicle makes contact with another object/vehicle and the operator failed to do everything he or she could reasonably have done to prevent this from happening.

Mecklenburg EMS Agency is committed to the safe and appropriate transport of all employees, patients, and passengers of the Agency units.

Please adhere to the following policies: DRIVING EMERGENCY TRAFFIC • Agency vehicles shall not exceed the posted speed limited by more than 10 miles per hour, with a maximum of 75 miles per hour on the interstate.

ROUTINE TRAFFIC • While driving routine traffic, all agency employees will follow all North Carolina state vehicle operations laws.

INTERSECTIONS • When approaching an intersection, with a yellow light, red light, stop sign, or with no traffic control devices the operator will come to a complete stop and assess all lanes of travel for oncoming or impeding traffic.

POOR CONDITIONS • Employees will maintain a following distance of 5 seconds while in an Agency owned/leased vehicle. This distance will increase by the following for each change in driving conditions.

- Rain Conditions- add one second

- Snow Conditions- add two seconds

- Ice Conditions- add three seconds

- Use personal prudence with any non- listed situations BACKING/SPOTTER • Agency ambulances must utilize a backer/spotter when available • Spotter must be placed on the driver’s side rear of the unit, as to ensure full vision of the spotter by the driver • The spotter must be in place prior to the unit being placed into reverse • Proper hand signals shall be used by the spotter to communicate to the driver • The unit must not exceed 1-2 mph while in reverse.

VEHICLE INCIDENT • Report all incidents to the on duty Operations Supervisor. Failure to immediately report any Agency involved accident to an Operations Supervisor will result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.

DRIVING INSIDE BAY • The speed limit inside the bay is 5mph and use of lights is required.

National safety council is offering this course for free to Medic employees and employee’s children permit driving age to age 25.

LOCATION City of Charlotte Vehicle Operations Center, 2725 Beam Road, Charlotte, NC 28217 In addition to behind-the-wheel driving, the safe TEEN Driving Academy consists of outdoor activities and demonstrations. The Academy is held rain or shine. So please dress comfortably for the weather.

Open-toed shoes will not be allowed. Gates open at 8:15am and lock at 8:45am.

INFORMATION UPDATES • Please register for your Corporate Compliance Training session through LMS. • The duration of the Medic Safety & Compliance Training sessions is up to 4 hours.

• Attendees will be paid for the total time spent in class.

• Each employee, with an Annual Performance Review within that same month, MUST attend one of the available Compliance Training Sessions.

• Compliance sessions are held next to the Medic Fitness Center.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary received CPR/AED training at Medic. The Auxiliary has a proud tradition of supporting the United States Coast Guard and helping mariners needing assistance on the water.

(Crew: Donald Eslick, Bryan Rucker, Craig McAllister, David Phillips and Don Shue) Dear Mr. Donald Eslick, My name is Ann. I am Michelle’s mom. Michelle is the 24 year old girl that you saved on Friday, at the Sunset Motel.

Michelle gave me your email. I hope you do not mind that I am writing to you. She told me how you came to visit her in the hospital a couple times. Thank you so much for caring. She also told me how you could not believe she lived and you explained to her what happened. Your visits helped her!

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I wasn’t ready to lose her so thank you so much.

God must have a plan for her.

Michelle has struggled with drug addiction for years. She has gotten help at times. She is in a rehab program right now and doing very well. My husband and I are trying to help her figure out the next step. We are hopeful!

It was such a tragedy what happened there -- I pray every day for the family.

Thank you from me. Thank you from her dad. Thank you from her sister. And thank you from Michelle. She knew I was going to email you and wanted to say thank you.
