@MecklenburgEMS
Good morning, students. My name is Professor Doc Studnek and you’re in Medic 101. If you pull out your syllabus, you’ll see that our first session is on Medic’s, Planning Process.
ask.
learn.
know.
Why are we discussing the Planning Process?... Because it’s an important tool for Medic (or any organization) to help leadership establish direction, focus and be proactive in decision making. EMS planning is an integral part of our business. For example, medical protocols are the backbone of our patient care plans. There’s a Planning Process for that. Incident action plans help us to organize our activities around large scale events. There’s a Planning Process for that. Or how creating a budget allows us to understand how to use our financial resources. There’s a Planning Process for that. Each time we make a decision about how to act, the Planning Process is beneficial, especially when we intentionally STOP and use a formal process to develop these plans. Each year, Medic conducts an annual strategic planning process. Leadership STOPS and gathers information to identify strategic objectives that Medic will focus on for the next 1224 months. This process begins each fall and concludes in mid-February. You may see the results of this work show up in three important areas: 1. Setting budget priorities 2. Improvement projects/work teams 3. Alignment of performance goals
While this process occurs every year, it is not intended to change the direction we are currently headed in, necessarily. Rather it is to make sure that we are engaged in activities that help us focus and, in turn, help us better achieve a common purpose. Now class, as we move through the 2015 strategic planning process, we will provide live, short segments that are currently in the Planning Process. My hope is that these segments will give you a clearer understanding as to how Medic initiates, focuses and maybe even realign its processes, policies and/or procedures. We will conclude by sharing these objectives with you and the results. ASK THE PROFESSOR. If you have any questions about today’s session or have other related inquires, my teaching assistant, Tiffany will take any questions you may have and I’ll answer them in an Learning Lab. Email Tiffany at tiffanya@medic911.com. CLASS DISMISSED!

As previously noted, the latest Performance Pay Tracking Period began on November 1st. We are striving to meet the Patient Satisfaction goal of a ≥ 68% rating (experience as “Excellent”). In order to create a comfortable margin of performance, while continuing to improve the patient experience, we would like to share some feedback from recent patient focus groups. The two areas that patients value the most are: 1. Communication from the treating crew: “Explain treatment options and procedures” “Provide reassurance and compassionate communication with the patient” 2. Setting clear expectations: “Set transport length expectation” “Set a triage level expectation before arriving at the hospital”

To save costs and more importantly, find the highest quality product that’s currently on the market, we’ve been working closely with our product vendors. Over the past few weeks, we’ve learned a lot. As a result, we will begin to transition in new products within the coming weeks. Some of the immediate changes will be: 1. Crews will see new, orange gloves - as we deplete the purple gloves we currently use. The new gloves have been field tested by a number of crews, with positive feedback. The purple gloves will be gradually phased out and replaced by the stronger orange glove. The good news is: the orange glove is cheaper (in the quantities that we purchase it in) and the savings will be used for other needed supplies. 2. Also, the glucometers that we have been using for a number of years are gradually becoming obsolete. As a result, we will begin phasing in a new glucometer that operates the same way as the current model. Yet it’s much faster and will use less blood (to register) than the current model. Please note: the gloves will be the first to appear in the field. You should see them integrated in the coming weeks. Yet. the glucometers will be integrated as we deplete the existing model’s test strips inventory. If you have any questions, please contact Bryan Edwards at bryane@medic911.com or 704-943-6130.

On January 26, 2015, the ‘Billing Tab’ in Siren will change. Two sections, under Billing Tab have been eliminated. They will be replaced with one MANDATORY section called, Patient Conditions.
Crews will be required to select all of the appropriate patient conditions for each transport.
Three of the conditions are a little more subjective. Additional information, regarding appropriate use will be covered in an LMS video. Please watch the LMS video and sign the acknowledgement section prior to 1/26/15. Continue to complete accurate and thorough documentation that protects you legally and conveys relevant clinical information. It’s important. It also allows the Agency to avoid improperly billing for transports. For questions, please contact Robie Wilcox at robiew@medic911.com or 704-943-6401; Brian Shimberg at brians@medic911.com or 704-943-6142. Or contact your supervisor.
