You asked for it. We listened. You wanted to know how decisions were made at Medic? Well, learn how with the Learning Lab.
ask.
learn.
know.
Welcome to the Learning Lab! “What’s this”, you ask? Well you asked and Medic has answered! The Learning Lab is a new weekly feature dedicated to providing information, understanding and answering questions about some of the non-clinical topics Medic employees have been asking about most. Each topic will have its own multi-week learning module consisting of articles, games, quizzes and an “Ask the Professor” Q & A Corner, to address specific topic questions you may have. The modules will consist of topics such as how improvement projects are determined and managed, finance and budgeting, healthcare policy impacts and more. The first featured module will be “The Planning Process”, as the Agency is currently working through it. It will be a great opportunity to walk you through the process with Medic leadership. The first unit will launch in next week’s Dispatch. Have a question for the Professor? Maybe there’s a topic you’d like to recommend or learn more about? Shoot Tiffany an email with your questions or topic suggestions. Please email Tiffany at tiffanya@medic911.com. We hope you find it useful and an answer to improved communication about topics that matter to you! 2

As previously noted, the latest Performance Pay Tracking Period began on November 1st. We are striving to meet the Patient Satisfaction goal of a ≥ 68% rating (experience as “Excellent”). In order to create a comfortable margin of performance, while continuing to improve the patient experience, we would like to share some feedback from recent patient focus groups. The two areas that patients value the most are: 1. Communication from the treating crew: “Explain treatment options and procedures” “Provide reassurance and compassionate communication with the patient” 2. Setting clear expectations: “Set transport length expectation” “Set a triage level expectation before arriving at the hospital”

HAPPY 2015 EVERYONE! There is much going on in and around Medic, as we enter the New Year; and certainly a tremendous amount to be thankful for.
service, there are a number of exciting projects taking shape across the Agency in January. Many of which will require input from folks across the Agency:
The system has been busier than historical growth figures would suggest and folks everywhere are doing their part to manage the increase in demand. Utilization rates are above the target, which means crews are handling more calls than initially targeted.
• Alignment of Medic’s Mission, Vision and Values is one of the Agency’s projects. Led by Tara, this project team’s goal is to ensure that everyone is focused on the same purpose and that all of the work we do here at Medic aligns with this purpose. • Improvement of the tool used for carry-in equipment is another projects. Led by Bryan, this team will work with a number of stakeholders from across the Agency. • Review and recommendation of strategies to reduce ambulance operating costs. This project will look at everything from alternative power options to reducing idle time to more cost effective chassis options. Gary and Jeff will be leading this project and soliciting help from across the Agency. • Kevin leads a team that will help Medic to better understand the needs of its employees. This team will create strategies to help improve overall employee satisfaction. Watch out for opportunities to voice your thoughts through focus groups and other mechanisms in the coming weeks.
EDUCATION New classes of clinicians continue to graduate from the academy and future classes are being heavily recruited. Since July 1st, 17 EMTs and 21 Paramedics have graduated the academy and entered Medic’s system. A class of 6 EMTs and 3 Paramedics begins January 21st and will be released into the field in April. MODIFICATIONS The schedule has been adjusted to ensure resources are directed to where the system needs them most. Clinicians, who work in the front office, continue to have their mandatory ride time directed towards slots on the schedule where the help is needed most. Patient satisfaction, response time requirements and total time on task all continue to perform as targeted, despite the increase in demand. That is a testament to the hard work and commitment of everyone here at Medic and I am very grateful to each of you for doing your part. PROJECTS As depicted during November’s in4

NEW BUILDING The big project, of course, is the new building. This is still a very fluid project and the location is not yet etched in stone; I can tell you that a location on Wilkinson Blvd. is the front runner at this time, and we will keep everyone
Flu season is officially in full swing! It’s time to protect yourself from infectious diseases. Please review Medic’s, Infectious Disease Policy, below. in the loop as developments occur. Bryan Edwards will be leading this project and input will be solicited from across the Agency in numerous ways. Why Move? Here are the top three reasons why Medic needs to secure a new space: 1. Our lease is up. Medic can move now or wait to move in another five years. 2. We are at full capacity in our current space. Our current location does not give us effective options to add/remodel and remain fully operational. 3. The County will own the new building. The County prefers to own versus leasing a building. So stay tuned as this project takes shape, in the coming months. THANK YOU!!! Overall, we’re excited about what 2015 will bring. Medic continues to be a remarkable place to work. We are blessed with tremendous resources, supportive stakeholders and most importantly, outstanding people who choose to work here.
Please note: This requirement will stay in place until both hospitals notify us they are declaring the flu season over. 2.15 Infectious Disease Policy: Effective 10/28/13; Revised 10/20/14 POLICY Medic is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all employees and patients. In pursuit of this endeavor, there will be times, such as the influenza season, when the Agency will require employees to take action with regard to protection against infectious diseases. Required employee action will include mandatory vaccination with exception for valid, documented medical or religious reasons. Employees with documented medical or religious exemptions will be required to use personal protective equipment (PPE) as directed. All employees will be required to comply with all Agency mandated protective measures within the time frame specified by the Agency. Anyone failing to meet the Agency’s required standards will be subject to placement in a non-work status and disciplinary action up to and including termination. The required actions may change as directed by the Agency, and will be based upon a host of factors emanating from various local, state and federal authorities. If you have questions, please contact Sharon Taulbert at sharont@medic911.com or 704-943-6086. Or contact Claudia Tetenbaum at claudiat@medic911.com or 704-943-6100.
Thank you for everything you do to make Medic such a great place to work. We’re looking forward to what 2015 will bring and we’re glad you’re along for the “ride”. - Joe

Just before the crossing finish line, he gets a second wind and overtakes the person in second place! What place did he finish in? ______________________________ 2. In Medic’s fiscal year, there are 12 months. 7 months have 31 days. How many months have 28 days?__________________________ 3. What’s the score he predicts? ______________ to _______________ 4. Shelly needs help in Finance. Her trusty calculator met it’s timely demise and she sits heartbroken.
