SUMMER IN THE CITY

A summer city between mountains and fjord

Summer in Narvik is something entirely different – and yet, exactly the same.

The mountains still stand where they always have, with sharp ridgelines and stubborn patches of snow. The fjord sparkles like a quiet promise. But the light – the light changes everything. When the sun refuses to set, the days grow longer, the conversations stretch into the night, and the plans get bigger. It’s as if the whole city takes a deeper breath.

A SUMMER FOR EVERYONE

Here, you’ll find both high-adrenaline summit hikes and the calmest of morning coffees. You can walk from the city center to a mountain peak before lunch. ⇨

THE WILD, THE REAL, AND THE WELCOMING – ALL IN ONE PLACE

Rent a bike and follow the historic Rallar Road, fish in the fjord, swim in mountain lakes, or just lie in the grass and gaze toward Sweden.

Narvik is a summer city for those who love being outdoors – and who enjoy peace and quiet. There are no crowds here, no lines, no stress. Just space. And air.

LOCAL FLAVORS AND GENUINE PEOPLE

Perhaps the best thing about Narvik is the blend of raw nature and warm-hearted people. It’s not unusual for the barista to have hiked Tredjetoppen before work – or for the fishmonger to throw in a hiking tip with your fillet.

Taste your way through the city, from freshly baked cinnamon rolls to locally sourced Arctic cuisine. Or visit a summer festival and get to know the sounds, smells, and soul of summer in the north.

A CITY OF CONTRASTS

Narvik grew from steel and steam, and today it beats to a new rhythm – with small boats in the harbor, e-bikes climbing the hills, and kids eating ice cream without a care in the world.

That’s what makes summer up here so special:

The wild, the real, and the welcoming – all in one place.

Welcome to Narvik. In the middle of everything. And quietly off to the side.

YOU’LL FIND BOTH

Narvik Bike Festival

– A celebration on two wheels

In the fall of 2024, Narvik once again hosted its annual bike festival – and for the second year in a row, it was a roaring success. With scenic trails, a warm social atmosphere, and a shared love of biking, the event brought together local enthusiasts and visitors from across Northern Norway. This year’s event takes place September 4-7.

Cyclists from Tromsø, Harstad, Lofoten, Senja, and Narvik gathered – and it quickly became clear that the festival fills a unique role in the region.

WORLD-CLASS MOUNTAIN BIKING

Featuring both purpose-built trails and untouched natural terrain, the area impressed all who took part.

– The biking conditions in Narvik are absolutely amazing. The trails were beautiful – both the natural ones and those that have been built, said Vilde Røed from Tromsø, who attended with six friends.

With more than 90 participants and around 30 volunteers, the festival was organized by Narvik Push Bike, a local organization working to promote biking and develop trail networks in the area. All profits go directly back into trail maintenance.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

– AND EVERYONE IS WELCOME

The four-day festival ran from Thursday to Sunday, offering group rides, social gatherings, after-bike sessions, and the WHIP event, hosted in collaboration with Narvik Push Bike and Narvik Snowboard Club.

Rides were held to destinations like Tredjevannet, Rundtuva, Gressdalen, and Daltinden, with options tailored to experience

level and fitness. Participants ranged from their 20s to their 60s, and one-third of the riders were women – a number the organizers were particularly proud of.

On Saturday, Ankenesfjellet became the main arena for both friendly competitions and family fun.

– The vibe was amazing – happy kids, happy adults. It doesn’t get better than that, said organizer Marte Bergmann, who launched the festival together with Arnt Øverbyhagen.

BIKE JOY THAT BUILDS COMMUNITY

For Bergmann, the festival is about more than just riding.

– It brings energy to the city when events like this happen. We want to make Narvik an awesome place to live – and this festival is helping to show what we have.

The festival worked closely with Ankenes Alpine Club, Narvik Museum, Pudr, and local sponsors – and even became part of the larger city event Hagefesten.

With great turnout, smiling faces, and support from across the community, there’s no doubt:

Narvik Bike Festival is here to stay.

a community project on wheels

SIn the fall of 2024, Narvik opened Flyt – Narvik Bike & Skatepark with a big celebration. The city finally got a long-awaited space for movement, mastery, and community – and it’s already become a local favorite.

Opening day brought together people of all ages. There were demos, activities, food and a shared feeling that this was something the whole city had been waiting for. Sebastian Aslaksrud, Norwegian champion in BMX and pumptrack, showed what’s possible on two wheels – and gave tips to eager kids and adults.

The project cost over NOK 16 million, but thanks to massive volunteer work, the real value is estimated at more than 20 million.

– This is something Narvik made happen together, said project manager Jon-Arne Østvik at the opening. – It shows what we can achieve when volunteers, local businesses and the municipality pull in the same direction.

Flyt is more than just a park. It’s a low-threshold meeting place that’s already buzzing with life – a space for activity, connection, and spontaneous joy.

Narvik Snowboard Club, Narvik Cycling Club, and a small army of volunteers have made this possible. And now, the future rolls forward – for everyone who wants to join in.

The Magic of the Midnight Sun

THE MIDNIGHT SUN DOES SOMETHING TO YOU. IT STRETCHES TIME. IT BLURS THE LINES BETWEEN DAY AND NIGHT, BETWEEN “SHOULD WE?” AND “LET’S DO IT”

Imagine this: It’s 11:45 PM. You’re sitting outside in just a T-shirt. The mountains are calm, the fjord mirrors the sky – and the sun is still up. Not "about to set" – but fully up. That’s the midnight sun. And it’s just as magical every single time.

The light that never quits From late May to mid-July, the sun refuses to set over Narvik. Instead, it circles just above the horizon –painting the landscape in golden tones that make everything look like a movie scene. It’s hard not to feel moved. Or restless. Because who really wants to go to bed when the light is whispering: “Stay a little longer”? ⇨

WHEN EVERYTHING FEELS A LITTLE BIGGER

The midnight sun does something to you. It stretches time. It blurs the lines between day and night, between “should we?” and “let’s do it.”

Many say life is easier here in summer. That the energy lasts longer. That conversations go deeper. That it’s easier to say yes.

Maybe that’s why people in Narvik smile a little more during summer.

TOP PLACES TO EXPERIENCE THE MIDNIGHT SUN

NARVIKFJELLET

– Take the gondola to the top (closed in 2025) and enjoy the view of the city and the fjord. Maybe with something warm in your cup?

FAGERNESFJELLET / LINKEN

– A classic for those who prefer to hike. Here, the sun hits you straight in the face – in the best possible way.

EFJORD

– Combine a mountain hike with a tent or a campfire, and watch the sun reflect in the water around midnight.

SKJOMEN

– A spectacular mountain landscape and the perfect place to soak in the silence.

Tips

Take a walk late in the evening – it feels like you’re cheating time

Bring a camera – but don’t forget to just enjoy the moment

Sit still for a while – and notice how truly quiet it is

Fjord and Freedom

Standing by the fjord in Narvik feels like standing on the doorstep of something endless. The water sparkles, the mountains reflect in its surface, and the silence is almost too perfect to be real. But that’s exactly the magic – here, you can swap asphalt for saltwater in just minutes.

PADDLE IN PEACE

Gliding through the Ofotfjord in a kayak is an unforgettable experience, whether you're a beginner or an experienced paddler. The water is often glassy calm in the early morning and late evening, and you can paddle close to steep cliffs, small islets – and maybe even spot a curious seal along the shoreline.

FJORD FISHING – IT BITES!

For many, summer means fishing luck. Whether you're casting from shore, a boat, or a pier with the

kids, the Ofotfjord is full of life. Cod, pollock, redfish, and wolffish are just some of the catches you might reel in – and they always taste better when you’ve caught them yourself.

You’ll find boats for hire and local guides ready to help you get the most out of your fishing trip.

RIB SAFARI WITH A VIEW

Looking to sit back and simply enjoy the fjord? A spectacular rib safari tour is the perfect choice. See Narvik from a new angle – from the water –and maybe hear a few local stories from the captain along the way.

Fjord cruises are great for the whole family and can be combined with everything from birdwatching to storytelling.

DID YOU KNOW…

…The Ofotfjord is one of Norway’s deepest fjords, with depths of over 500 meters? Beneath the surface lies a rich ecosystem – and some fascinating WWII shipwrecks.

SEE NARVIK FROM A NEW ANGLE – FROM THE WATER – AND MAYBE HEAR A FEW LOCAL STORIES FROM THE CAPTAIN ALONG THE WAY

THE YEAR 1900

Rombaksbotn – A bustling hub during the construction of the Ofot Line

Today, Rombaksbotn lies quietly at the end of the fjord – beautiful, but deserted. Around the year 1900, things looked very different. This was a busy construction town with 70 to 80 buildings and nearly 500 residents, right in the heart of what would become one of Norway’s most important railway lines: the Ofot Line.

Rombaksbotn was established when the second attempt to build the railway began in 1898. What had once been a simple farmstead quickly transformed into a lively service center for the massive project. Steamships brought in workers, supplies, and equipment. From here, transport continued on foot, by horse, or via cableway – serving construction sites on both the Norwegian and Swedish sides.

Although the work was hard and demanding, life in Rombaksbotn offered more than just toil. The town had shops, hotels, cafés – and even entertainment. A vibrant little community grew in the fjord, where people gathered, lived, and worked amid wild nature and grand ambition.

Today, little remains of the settlement. But the photographs – and the memories – tell the story of a time when everything was in motion, and the future came steaming up the fjord.

Bringing Finnish heat to Norway’s Arctic fjords

In the tranquil waters of the Ofotfjord, just outside Narvik, a unique wellness experience awaits: Kleksen, a floating sauna handcrafted by the Bäckman family and their network of close friends. This one-of-a-kind sauna boat, once a humble fishing vessel, has been transformed into a wood-fired oasis— offering warmth, relaxation, and Arctic adventure in one unforgettable package.

A VISION BUILT ON COMMUNITY AND PASSION

The story of Kleksen is more than just the repurposing of a boat—it's a family-driven initiative with a larger vision. Built with the help of friends and fueled by community spirit and countless hours of volunteer work, Kleksen represents a new kind of soft adventure in Arctic Norway.

The Bäckman family envisions Kleksen as the cornerstone of a broader experience concept—one that blends wellness, nature and local culture. The Navvy Road – Hiking Across Norway

Some hikes offer more than beautiful landscapes – they carry history, identity, and a sense of walking in the footsteps of those who helped build the nation. The trail from Bjørnfjell to Rombaksbotn is one such journey. It follows the old construction road alongside the Ofot Line, built by the rallars (navvies) over a century ago. This route combines powerful scenery with a rich sense of heritage – from high mountain passes to deep fjords.

FROM FJORD TO MOUNTAIN

– AND BACK AGAIN

Your journey begins with a spectacular train ride on the Ofotbanen, one of Northern Norway’s most scenic – and underrated –railways. Departing from Narvik, the train climbs from sea level into alpine terrain, passing dramatic mountains and deep valleys on its way toward the Swedish border. The full railway spans 43 kilometers, and you can begin your hike from one of three stations:

• Riksgrensen (16.2 km)

• Bjørnfjell (13 km)

• Katterat (6.5 km)

No matter where you start, all paths lead to Rombaksbotn – once a bustling construction town deep in the Rombaksfjord, home to over 500 people at its peak. Today, the houses are gone, but ruins and silence still tell the story.

HISTORY BENEATH YOUR FEET

The name Rallarveien comes from the rallars, the traveling railway workers who built the line around the turn of the 20th century. Along the trail, you’ll find remnants of buildings, old machinery, historical signs, and the well-preserved Solheimsbrakka – a

bunkhouse that once sheltered workers through long, rugged seasons.

The path is well-maintained and mostly downhill, with sections of stone paving and stairs. Along the way, you’ll find benches and fire pits where you can rest while taking in views of waterfalls, steep cliffs, and lush greenery. It’s a hike most able-bodied walkers can handle – and one that rewards every step.

A FITTING FINALE

The hike ends in Rombaksbotn, where you’re greeted by the sight of 1500-meter peaks towering above the fjord. At 18:00, a boat departs from the stone quay (must be booked in advance), taking you on a short but stunning cruise through Rombaksfjorden. Along the way, you’ll pass the World War II shipwreck Georg Thiele, a haunting reminder of history beneath the waves.

From Sildvik, a bus takes you the final stretch back to Narvik Station, arriving around 18:30 – with tired legs, a full camera roll, and a deeper connection to Norway’s industrial past.

NO MATTER WHERE YOU START, ALL PATHS LEAD TO ROMBAKSBOTN – ONCE A BUSTLING CONSTRUCTION TOWN DEEP IN THE ROMBAKSFJORD, HOME TO OVER 500 PEOPLE AT ITS PEAK. TODAY, THE HOUSES ARE GONE, BUT RUINS AND SILENCE STILL TELL THE STORY

The rides will vary in difficulty, from easy trails for beginners to more challenging routes for the experienced. This provides everyone the opportunity to experience mastery and joy at their own level.

We encourage all girls who are curious about mountain biking to sign up. It's going to be a fantastic day on the bike, says Marte Bergmann, one of the organizers.

The day concludes with food and socializing in town, where participants can share experiences and make new friends.

Museums in the Region

IF YOU WANT TO LEARN ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE CITY AND THE REGION, A VISIT TO ONE OF THE LOCAL MUSEUMS SHOULD BE ON YOUR ITINERARY

Narvik War Museum

The Narvik War Museum focuses on the Battle of Narvik during the dramatic days of April 1940, offering insight into the naval and mountain battles that took place over 62 intense days. Through exhibitions featuring artifacts, interactive digital displays, texts, and photographs, the museum illustrates the Nazi invasion and occupation and connects this history to the post-war period and the present day.

The exhibitions encourage reflection on themes such as "us" versus "the others," the value of human life, and the importance of understanding war to build peace.

The museum also offers tailored experiences for children and youth, such as "Kids at the War Museum" and "FamilyFriendly Bunker Walks" in underground Nazi bunkers.

Ballangen Museum

Located in the old administration building of the mining company Bjørkaasen Gruber, a distinguished structure from 1919, the Ballangen Museum is worth a visit for its architecture alone.

For years, the lifeblood of the Ballangen community was the mining industry, and naturally, the museum’s main theme is mining history. With a unique collection of artifacts, visitors gain insight into the community’s golden era, as well as its farming culture, schools, and domestic life.

Narvik Museum

Visit the Narvik Museum, located in one of the city's most beautiful buildings with a stunning garden. The museum introduces visitors to the city's origins and its dramatic development.

The main focus is on industrial history: the construction of the Ofoten Railway, the transport of iron ore by train, the shipping of the ore, and the city's evolution over more than a century.

The museum is housed in the former administration building of the Norwegian State Railways (NSB), a monumental stone building erected in 1902, situated in scenic surroundings. From the museum and its garden, visitors can enjoy views of the harbor, loading facilities, and large parts of the city.

Kjøpsvik Museum

Museum Nord – Divtasvoudna/Tysfjord, Kjøpsvik, consists of two buildings: Helland’s Building and the old sheriff’s residence. Exhibitions are spread across both buildings, focusing on mining and industrial history, cave discoveries, fishing and farming culture, domestic life, war history, and education.

In 1918, Nordland Portland Cement Factory (NPC) began operations in Kjøpsvik, transforming the village entirely. The museum features many artifacts connected to the cement factory and other unique items, including a nearly intact 1970s kitchen in the old sheriff's house.

Narvik Vehicle History Museum

The Narvik Vehicle History Museum showcases the rich history of vehicles in the region. Themes include everyday automobiles, camper vans, roadside culture, bus and taxi history, ferries, and bridges. The museum also features a miniature representation of the Ofoten Railway.

A scenic journey through Norway's Arctic landscapes

Experience the breathtaking beauty of Norway's northernmost railway line aboard the Arctic Train, which operates along the historic Ofoten Line between Narvik and Bjørnfjell. This 43-kilometer route offers passengers panoramic views of majestic fjords, towering mountains, and cascading waterfalls, all set against the backdrop of the Arctic's unique light.

The Ofoten Line, officially opened in 1902, was originally constructed to transport iron ore from the mines in Kiruna, Sweden, to the ice-free port of Narvik. Built by over 5,000 workers, known as "rallare," the railway is a testament to engineering prowess, featuring numerous tunnels and bridges that navigate the challenging mountainous terrain. During World War II, the line held strategic importance, with the Battle of Narvik in 1940 highlighting its significance in controlling iron ore supplies.

Unforgettable rounds of Golf

Tucked away at the end of the dramatic Skjomen valley, just a scenic 30-minute drive from Narvik, lies one of Norway’s most unique golfing destinations: Skjomen Golfpark. Surrounded by towering mountains, lush landscapes, and crystal-clear waters, this 18-hole championship course is not just a sporting venue—it's a nature experience in itself.

Skjomen Golfpark is home to the world’s second northernmost 18-hole golf course. Thanks to the region’s surprisingly mild climate, the season stretches from May to October— sometimes even from late April to early November. And during the endless summer days, the course is open around the clock. Where else in the world can you tee off at midnight under the golden glow of the midnight sun?

The course itself is a true test for golfers, offering 5,884 meters of beauty, challenge, and pure joy. Whether you're battling bunkers or soaking in the views of the Skjoma River and the Frostisen Glacier, this is a place where both body and soul get their share of recreation.

Skjomen might not be the first place you'd expect to find a golf course—but once you've played here, it’s hard to imagine a more memorable spot for a round of golf. More and more visitors from across Norway and beyond are discovering the magic of this Arctic gem. So pack your clubs, bring your camera, and prepare for a golfing experience like no other.

SKJOMEN MIGHT NOT BE THE FIRST PLACE YOU'D EXPECT TO FIND A GOLF COURSE —BUT ONCE YOU'VE PLAYED HERE, IT’S HARD TO IMAGINE A MORE MEMORABLE SPOT FOR A ROUND OF GOLF

The Mountain Geyser

The water jet at Taraldsvik Mini Hydropower Plant can be seen every day at 1:00 PM and 9:00 PM from June 1st to August 31st. The water travels through 1,100 meters of tunnels and a 2,000-meter pipeline from the Isvann and Forsnesvann lakes. With a vertical drop of approximately 440 meters, the water reaches a pressure of 44 bar —enough to shoot it 75 meters into the air.

When half the town gathers in the park

Narvik’s biggest summer celebration is turning five – and this August, “half the town” will once again gather in Bromsgårdparken for what has become a true highlight in Narvik’s cultural life: Haikjeften Festival.

It all began in 2019, though the early years were shaped by the pandemic. In 2020, the festival was reduced to a single intimate concert with 200 attendees at Lokstall1, and in 2021 a scaled-down version was held in Ornesvika. But since 2022, the festival has returned at full strength – and the crowds have followed.

– Everything is going great with Haikjeften. We’re on schedule and things are looking good, says festival director Stein Hjertholm, who is excited for this year’s edition.

Sold Out – and Ready for Any Weather

Last year’s festival sold out exactly one month before it kicked off.

– Ticket sales this year are very similar to last year, says Hjertholm. – Friday passes are usually the last to go, but things are moving steadily.

Weather has been a challenge in the past – especially on Saturday last year, when both wind and rain hit the park. Still, the atmosphere remained upbeat.

– We definitely got to stress test the park in proper stormy conditions, Hjertholm laughs.

– But this year, we deserve some sunshine!

Star-Packed Lineup and Fresh Ideas

And that’s not all – the festival team promises more surprises, both on stage and around the grounds.

– We’re always working to evolve the festival. We want people to feel that we care – that we never take anything for granted. There should always be something new, something fun and a little different, says Hjertholm.

In addition to booking artists, the team has been focused on upgrading the park itself and making the festival area even more inviting for guests of all ages.

Two Days of Energy and Togetherness

Haikjeften isn’t just about music – it’s about people. About community. About spotting familiar faces in the glow of the summer evening… or under a shared umbrella.

– I can’t wait to gather half the town again. It’s amazing to be part of something that means so much to so many, says Hjertholm.

The 2025 lineup already features big names like Sigrid, Timbuktu, Gabrielle, Briskeby, Kamelen, Postgirobygget, Skaar, and The September When.

Musikk

i Nordland

NYTT ENSEMBLE:

• Å jobbe i varierte musikalske sjangre

• Å bidra til å bygge musikkbransjen i nord

• Å holde høy kvalitet i alle ledd

• Å holde et høyt internasjonalt kunstnerisk nivå

Musikk i Nordlands satsningsområder

Musikk i Nordland presenterer

Herkedal

IN THE NARROWEST AND DARKEST CORNERS, SECRETS FROM THE WAR WHISPER THROUGH THE SILENCE — WAITING FOR THE CURIOUS AND THE BRAVE TO UNCOVER THEM

underground Nazi bunkers Go down into

Step back in time and descend into the hidden remnants of World War II. This unique adventure, developed by Narvik War Museum, takes you deep into narrow, shadowy bunkers once occupied by Nazi soldiers—once filled with weapons and tension, now echoing with powerful stories from the past.

The journey begins with a 2.5-kilometre hike through hilly terrain, where you'll encounter a network of wartime constructions:

• Cannon and machine gun positions tucked into the rocks

• Dark, damp ammunition rooms

• Winding trenches and maze-like tunnels carved into the Arctic earth

In the narrowest and darkest corners, secrets from the war whisper through the silence—waiting for the curious and the brave to uncover them.

This historical trek is part of Arctic Kids, a program that transforms the landscapes of Narvik into a playground for exploration. Here, children and families discover that adventures come in many forms—from fjordside hikes to immersive bunker expeditions.

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Northern Norway, this experience offers a rare blend of nature, history, and storytelling.

The tour is one of many activities offered by Narvik War Museum, and can be booked through Visit Narvik.

STETIND EMBODIES THE RAW, UNTAMED BEAUTY OF THE NORTH

Norway’s National Mountain

Rising 1,392 meters straight from the fjord, Stetind is more than just a mountain — it’s a monument. With its striking obelisk shape, smooth granite slopes and commanding presence, Stetind has fascinated climbers, photographers, and nature lovers for generations. Located in Tysfjord, just under two hours from Narvik, this majestic peak is a mustsee for anyone exploring Northern Norway.

Often described as “an anvil rising from the sea”, Stetind’s iconic silhouette is unmistakable. The mountain was voted Norway’s National Mountain in a national radio poll in 2002—a title that reflects both its visual power and deep cultural significance.

A MOUNTAIN OF LEGENDS

To the Sámi people, Stetind has long held a spiritual presence in the landscape. For centuries, it stood unclimbed—respected and feared. In fact, early mountaineers in the late 1800s dubbed it “the ugliest mountain they had ever seen,” due to its sheer, intimidating walls.

But in 1910, Norwegian climbing pioneers Ferdinand Schjelderup, Carl Wilhelm Rubenson, and Alf Bonnevie Bryn made the first successful ascent. Since then, Stetind has become a sacred destination for mountaineers from all over the world.

FOR HIKERS AND VIEW-SEEKERS

While the summit climb requires experience, proper equipment and often a guide, there are hiking trails in the area that offer spectacular views of the mountain itself. The hike to Halls Fortopp (a pre-peak ridge at 1,314 meters) is a popular alternative, offering a demanding but rewarding challenge.

Even from the roadside, Stetind is a sight to behold. Whether shrouded in mist or glowing in the midnight sun, the mountain casts a timeless spell.

A SYMBOL OF THE NORTH

Stetind embodies the raw, untamed beauty of the north. It speaks of contrasts — between sea and sky, smooth stone and sharp edge, myth and reality. For many, it represents the spirit of Norway: proud, dramatic, and unforgettable.

THE SHIPLOADER AT QUAY

5

An Era in Narvik’s Industrial History Comes to an End

In April 2025, the 2,500ton shiploader at LKAB’s Quay 5 in Narvik was dismantled and removed – a historic milestone marking the end of nearly 50 years of continuous operation. This steel and engineering giant has been a cornerstone of the company’s iron ore exports from the Port of Narvik since 1977, handling staggering volumes of ore – an estimated one billion tonnes.

The shiploader was originally delivered and installed by FCB in 1975, and has since played a central role in Narvik’s industrial identity. But like all technology, even the heaviest constructions must eventually give way to newer, more efficient systems according to environmental requirements. The final vessel loaded by the old structure was the Weser Stahl – interestingly, also the first ship ever loaded at Quay 7 – which took on 40,000 tonnes of iron ore in late March 2025 before the system was shut down for good.

SPECTACULAR DISMANTLING — WITH NATURE’S HELP

The removal process was both complex and impressive. After months of preparation, the critical phase began on April 25, when the main structure was lifted onto a transport barge. The operation relied on hydraulic tools –and the tide.

“We make use of all the resources we can, and we also work with nature, not against it,” says Stig Arne Larssen, Project Manager at LKAB.

The dismantling began during Easter and was carried out by a rotating crew. In the final phase, a team of 4–8 people ensured the shiploader was safely prepared for sea transport to Gulen, north of Bergen. The massive unit was lifted, rotated, and secured in a new position on the barge for its journey.

FROM SCRAP TO REUSE — A GREENER CHOICE

Initially, the plan was to scrap the shiploader. But in collaboration with Miljøsanering Nord, LKAB opted for a more sustainable solution: reusing the entire structure.

“We’re very positive about that. It’s beneficial for both the environment and the overall sustainability of the project,” says Larssen.

A NEW ERA AT QUAY 5

Although Quay 5 now stands without its iconic shiploader, there is no pause in operations. Exports continue uninterrupted via the modern shiploader at Quay 7, which has been in operation since 2016. And during the summer of 2025, a new shiploader will arrive at Quay 5, with operations expected to begin in autumn or early winter.

“This is an important upgrade for us, and part of a larger investment in future operations,” explains Larssen.

NARVIK’S ROLE IN EUROPE’S IRON ORE EXPORTS

With over one billion tonnes of ore exported, Narvik plays a crucial role in Europe’s raw material supply chain. And while the old shiploader is now history, LKAB’s presence is more central than ever.

“Most people probably don’t realize just how significant the export volume through the Port of Narvik really is. LKAB accounts for 85 percent of all iron ore shipped to Europe,” says Marit Waleniussen, General Manager at LKAB Norway.

The removal of the old shiploader is therefore not just a farewell to a technological giant – it also marks the beginning of a new phase in Narvik’s industrial future.

THE REMOVAL PROCESS WAS BOTH COMPLEX AND IMPRESSIVE

THE MOUNTAIN

IT’S ABOUT ACCESS. ABOUT POSSIBILITIES. ABOUT BUILDING SOMETHING THAT LASTS

On May 17th, Norway’s Constitution Day, construction officially began in Narvikfjellet, marking the start of one of the most significant upgrades in Norwegian ski history. The result? A future-proof, family-friendly ski resort built to meet the demands of a changing climate and a growing international spotlight.

This feels fantastic, said Ragnar Norum, general manager of Narvikfjellet. - We were under time pressure, and we both wanted and needed to run this as a public tender. Now it's underway.

The main contract was awarded to a Norwegian–Italian consortium: Leitner and DemacLenko from Italy, in partnership with Taubane Teknikk from Voss.

MORE THAN A CHAMPIONSHIP

Yes, the work is part of the preparations for the 2029 Alpine World Championships. But perhaps more importantly, it lays the foundation for the next generation of skiers and mountain lovers. Whether you're a racer, a rambler, or just someone who enjoys being in the snow, this project is designed to enhance the experience for everyone.

A NEW FAMILY SLOPE – AND FASTER SNOW

One of the biggest changes is the addition of a brand-new, 3 km-long family slope with a maximum gradient of 15%. - The current family slope is far too steep for beginners, said Norum. - Locals have adapted, but visitors struggle.

The new slope will open the mountain to a broader audience: families, tourists, and first-timers. Several new trails will also be developed in the upper parts of the resort, near the scenic "Tredjebakken."

To make the mountain more resilient to warmer winters, Narvikfjellet is also overhauling its entire snowmaking system.

NARVIK

A Mountain in Transformation

The countdown to the Alpine World Championships 2029 has begun – and it started with dynamite.

A FUTURE-PROOF, FAMILY-FRIENDLY SKI RESORT BUILT TO MEET THE DEMANDS OF A CHANGING CLIMATE AND A GROWING INTERNATIONAL SPOTLIGHT

A 60,000-cubic-metre water reservoir is being blasted directly into the mountain, allowing the resort to snow-cover all main slopes in just four days—provided the temperature is at least -10°C.

SMART DESIGN, SUSTAINABLE THINKING

Construction teams are reusing all excavated rock and soil to shape new trails, reducing the need for transport and limiting the environmental impact. - We’re using the mountain’s own resources to build the future, Norum explains. - That also means less construction traffic near schools and residential areas.

Slopes are also being redesigned to require less artificial snow, allowing for earlier openings and longer seasons. - Less waiting, more skiing, says Norum.

LIMITED ACCESS THIS SUMMER

Due to the scale of the work, Narvikfjellet will be closed to the public throughout summer 2025. The plan is to work intensively to shorten the building period.

This summer's work represents the first of two major construction phases. The second, to be announced in autumn 2025, will focus on the lower mountain and new finish areas.

A NEW GONDOLA? STILL ON THE TABLE

A potential gondola extension remains under discussion. If approved, it would extend from a new base area and connect with a new mid-station, improving overall flow and capacity during peak seasons and major events. - It’s still an option in the contract. We haven’t made a final decision yet, Norum notes.

BUILT FOR EVERYONE – AND FOR THE FUTURE

With new lifts, trails, lights, snowmaking, and smarter design, Narvikfjellet is being reshaped—not only for championships, but for the people who use the mountain every day. This mountain is being rebuilt to serve both elite athletes and everyday visitors – in every kind of winter.

From the ceremonial groundbreaking on May 17th, the transformation is now fully underway.

And by 2029, a mountain will stand ready to welcome the world.

It’s about access. About possibilities. About building something that lasts, Norum says.

Wild encounters in the North

Just a scenic 75-minute drive from Narvik, nestled in the lush Salangsdalen valley, you’ll find Polar Park – the world’s northernmost wildlife park, and one of Norway’s most unique nature experiences. Far more than a traditional zoo, Polar Park is a sanctuary for Arctic predators and wildlife, offering a rare chance to meet wolves, lynx, bears, wolverines, moose, musk oxen and reindeer – all in spacious enclosures that mirror their natural habitats.

What sets Polar Park apart is its strong commitment to animal welfare and respect for nature.

The park’s philosophy is simple: "Animals first."

Every enclosure is designed to give the animals space, enrichment and the freedom to behave naturally. As a result, encounters here feel authentic – sometimes magical.

For those seeking something truly unforgettable, Polar Park also offers Wolf Visits, where guests (aged 15+) can enter the enclosure and meet socialized wolves under the guidance of expert keepers. These intimate, controlled visits create deep impressions and lasting memories.

Polar Park is open year-round and is a fantastic stop for families, photographers, and anyone fascinated by Nordic wildlife. In summer, the midnight sun lights up the park, and you can combine your visit with hikes, picnics, or a longer road trip through Arctic Norway.

There’s also a visitor centre and café, a gift shop with Nordic-themed items, and plenty of outdoor seating surrounded by majestic mountain views.

GETTING THERE

From Narvik, drive north along E6 through spectacular fjord and mountain scenery. The park is located in Bardu Municipality, and is clearly signposted along the main road.

A Coastal Retreat in Vesterålen

Tucked between skerries, fjords and dramatic peaks lies Ringstad Resort – a tranquil hideaway in Bø in Vesterålen. Here, time slows down, and nature takes centre stage.

Whether you're gazing out from the panoramic windows of the restaurant, sipping coffee in your sea suite, or breathing in the ocean air from the dock, Ringstad invites you to pause – and reconnect.

Ringstad is for everyone,” says CEO Bjørn Ekrem. - Whether you’re a local looking for a memorable dinner, a traveller in search of silence and scenery, or a company needing a unique venue – you’re welcome here.

WAKE UP BY THE SEA

With 24 elegant sea-view double rooms, Ringstad offers a blend of Nordic design and natural warmth. The rooms are crafted with soft tones, tactile materials, and floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the untamed beauty of the Vesterålen coast. Each morning begins with the sound of seabirds and the sight of shifting light over the mountains – a perfect backdrop for reflection or rest.

A PLACE FOR FAMILIES AND EXPLORERS

In a restored traditional boathouse, you’ll find four spacious holiday apartments, ideal for families, small groups, or longterm stays. - We’ve created a place where people can feel at home – but also feel far away from the everyday, says Inga-Lill Ekrem.

Guests can relax in two large outdoor hot tubs overlooking the sea, or head out

on guided adventures. Sea eagle safaris, mountain hikes, kayaking, and RIB tours to the spectacular Littleisland Lighthouse (Litløy Fyr) offer unforgettable Arctic experiences just outside your door.

DESIGNED BY NATURE

The architecture at Ringstad is inspired by the towering silhouettes of the surrounding mountains. - We wanted the buildings to blend with the horizon and reflect the natural forms of the landscape, explains Bjørn. The result is a resort that feels both grounded and elevated – a natural extension of the terrain.

FOOD WITH A VIEW

The on-site restaurant is a destination in itself. With seasonal menus based on local produce, every dish celebrates the flavours of Northern Norway. In summer, you can dine under the midnight sun. In winter, the fireplace and fjord views create a setting that’s both dramatic and intimate.

MORE THAN A GETAWAY

Located just over 3.5 hours from Narvik by car, Ringstad Resort is easy to reach – but feels wonderfully remote. It’s a place for stillness and salt air, for deep sleeps and fresh perspectives.

Many of our guests tell us they carry this place with them long after they’ve left, says Inga-Lill.
