NARVIK IN TRANSITION

– WINTER 2026

Narvik is in the midst of a historic transformation. Each year brings us closer to 2029 and the Alpine World Ski Championships—a milestone that is already shaping the city. At Narvik Ski Resort, lifts, trails, and snowmaking systems are being rebuilt and expanded at a pace rarely seen in Norwegian alpine history. When the Junior World Championships arrive this winter, we’ll get an exciting first glimpse of what’s to come.

The new family slope, Panoramaløypa, is one of the most visible symbols of this transformation. It offers a brand-new experience for beginners and families, opening the mountain to more people than ever before. At the same time, Linken Express and several new lifts are taking shape, accompanied by a modernized snowmaking system that will elevate Narvik Ski Resort into one of the most innovative ski destinations in the Nordic region.

Optimism is growing throughout the city as well. New restaurants, businesses, and urban development projects are shaping a more vibrant city center—one that is preparing to welcome the world in 2029. Narvik is steadily strengthening

its position as a winter destination for both Norwegian and international visitors.

Linken Express Opens – and a New Gondola is on the Way

Narvik Ski Resort transforms ahead of the World Championships

This winter, visitors will meet a completely transformed Narvik Ski Resort. With the opening of the Linken Express chairlift and the wide, family-friendly Panorama Run from the upper cable car station, the ski resort has taken a major step forward. At the same time, the decision has been made to build an entirely new modern cable car — a 190 million NOK investment — scheduled for completion by New Year 2026.

This winter, visitors will meet a completely transformed Narvik Ski Resort.

A NEW RUN FOR EVERYONE

The brand-new Panorama Run has already become a hot topic among both locals and visitors. With a width of 30–35 meters, a length of 2.8 kilometers, and a gentle average gradient of 15 percent, it’s designed to be both safe and accessible.

“This run is much more family-friendly than what we’ve had before and opens the mountain to a whole new audience. Kids,

beginners, and families can enjoy it alongside more experienced skiers. At the same time, the slope functions as a transport route that can be used during major events,” explains construction manager Mads Solberg Eriksen.

to create smoother flow and reduce the need for artificial snow.

“With a more even surface, we need far less snow to create good conditions. It makes operations both more efficient and more sustainable,” says Eriksen.

MORE LIFTS – MORE SNOW

The expansion also includes a major upgrade of the lift and snowmaking systems:

• Six new lifts will be installed, three of them completed for the 25/26 season — including the new 6-seater chairlift, Linken Express.

• The number of snow cannons has been tripled, from around 30 to 85–90.

• A new water reservoir at the top ensures a stable supply for large-scale snow production when needed.

The result: a ski resort that can open earlier, extend the season, and offer stable conditions throughout the winter.

A NEW CABLE CAR SETS THE STANDARD

While the chairlift and new trails are already operational, the biggest news is the upcoming cable car. The Italian-made Leitner lift will be a milestone for both the town and the resort:

• Capacity for 1,800 people per hour, nearly double today’s capacity.

• Wind tolerance up to 20 m/s, compared to the current 10 m/s — a significant boost to operational reliability.

• The route will run from the base area by Kiwi, via the current mid-station, and up to Øvre Fjellheisstasjon (Upper Station).

“This new cable car will give us capacity, safety, and a lasting legacy. It’s not just about the World Championships — it’s about creating an asset that Narvik and the region can enjoy for decades,” says Eriksen.

A RESORT FOR THE FUTURE

With new lifts, upgraded slopes, modern snowmaking, and a gondola on the way, Narvik Ski Resort is better equipped than ever. For locals, it means better conditions and a longer season. For visitors, it means a world-class, year-round destination. And for the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2029, it means an arena that can stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in the world.

“What’s exciting is that this project isn’t just about the championships. We’re building something the whole town and region can benefit from for years to come,” says Eriksen. Narvik Ski Resort is, quite literally, rising to new heights.

Panorama Run – Narvik Ski Resort’s New Favorite

At last, Narvik Ski Resort can offer a new ski run that is wide, gentle, and easy to enjoy — stretching from the new upper gondola station all the way down the mountain. The new slope, named Panoramaløypa, officially opened in December 2025.

“This is a run for everyone — kids, families, beginners, powder hunters, and adventure seekers. Everyone will find their flow here,” says the project management team at Narvik Ski Resort.

With snowmaking and floodlights, Panorama Run offers skiing from early winter well into spring, both during the day and in the evening.

The opening of Panoramaløypa gives Narvik Ski Resort a brand-new highlight — a top-class ski experience with spectacular views as an integral part of the descent.

HEAD OF DEVELOPMENT

Mads Leads the Mountain Adventure

The mountain above Narvik is undergoing a historic transformation. Almost everything — from bottom to top — is being reshaped as Narvik Ski Resort gears up for the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in 2029. At the center of it all stands a Bergen native now living in Trondheim, with his eyes firmly set on the future.

“I like to think I grew up between mountains in Bergen, but I have to admit — this is something else. The mountains here are powerful. It’s night and day. It’s fantastic to experience this, and to actually work right in the middle of it,” says Mads Solberg Eriksen (42) with a smile.

Every week, Mads commutes north to lead what may be the city’s most important development project in decades. As Head of Development in Narvik Ski Resort Allmenn, he’s thinking far beyond the World Championships. He’s building a mountain for the future.

“For me, this isn’t just about the 2029 championship. It’s about what the mountain will be for people long after the world has gone home,” he says.

AN UNUSUAL JOURNEY NORTH

The road to Narvik went via major, technically demanding projects such as the Stad Ship Tunnel and Andøya Space. Mads is a trained lawyer with experience from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration and Sweco, but he eventually left the office desk for fieldwork and large-scale project management.

“I missed meeting people and seeing results — not just paperwork,” he says.

The recruitment process for the Narvik position was anything but ordinary. Five rounds of interviews, tests, and assessments — a rigorous needle’s eye to pass through.

– “We’re not just building for the World Championships, we’re building for the future.”

“I’ve never experienced anything like it. When I got the offer, I was both relieved and incredibly happy. This project is different from the billionkroner projects I’ve worked on before. Here, we combine major technical challenges with something that actually matters for the local community.”

LIFE BETWEEN TWO PLACES

Mads lives in Trondheim but chooses to spend long stretches of time in Narvik.

“There’s a lot of traveling, but I prioritize being here for extended periods. The downside is being away from friends and family. But if you involve them, it almost becomes a shared project — experiencing the region together,” he explains.

His partner has already joined him on several hikes. Together they’ve climbed both Fortoppen on Stetind and Reinnesfjellet.

“It’s very easy to commute — there’s a direct Evenes–Trondheim flight every day. I work Tuesday to Friday here and go home for the weekends,” he says.

FULL SPEED FROM DAY ONE

Mads started the job in mid-March. By then the project was already moving fast.

“The train was already rolling. We were in the middle of regulatory approvals and finalizing a 550-million-kroner contract. The tender deadline was just a week away. The time you normally get to familiarize yourself — I didn’t get that. Luckily, I work with extremely competent people,” he says.

He describes the job as intense, but rewarding. His role is overarching, while colleagues Knut Olav and Atle are hands-on in the field.

“The project is allocated funding over several years. However, the development must be completed in 2026. This means we need to secure additional financing along the way. A significant portion of the government funding will not arrive

until 2027–2028. At the same time, more than NOK 700 million must be spent within two years — NOK 500 million on equipment, and the rest on mountain infrastructure. This indicates a period of very high activity.”

A NEW ERA FOR THE MOUNTAIN

The project Mads leads is about much more than racecourses. The entire mountain is being upgraded and made more accessible — for elite athletes and families alike.

“The biggest and most important improvement is Panoramaløypa. A wide, family-friendly slope that opens the mountain to a completely new group of visitors. That means a lot — for tourists, children, and beginners,” he says.

Panoramaløypa will be 30–35 meters wide, 2.8 kilometers long, with a smooth gradient of no more than 15 percent.

In addition, five new lifts are being built — three T-bar lifts, a new six-seater chairlift, the ‘Linken Express’, and a new gondola line with a relocated base station.. For the championship

itself, there will also be a temporary lift between Linken and Mellom-/Andretoppen to make the downhill course “as big and spectacular as possible.”

Snowmaking is also getting a major boost. The number of snow cannons will increase from 25–30 to 85–90, and a new reservoir at the top will help ensure stable snow throughout the season.

“We’re building a facility that is more robust, opens earlier, and stays open longer. That means better experiences — both for world-class athletes and for families from the city.”

FROM KITZBÜHEL TO NARVIK

Mads speaks passionately about racecourses, lifts, and snowmaking. His eyes light up when he mentions his “magnum opus” course — the one that aims to compete with iconic Kitzbühel.

“We’re building a venue that can stand shoulder to shoulder with the great arenas of the world. And at the same time, it will be a mountain that people in Narvik can enjoy all year round.”

The Master Builder

When the world’s best alpine skiers plunge into the World Championship courses in Narvik in 2029, it will be thanks in no small part to the work of Lars Stenmoe and his team at Taubane Teknikk. The company has been given overall responsibility for the entire development of lifts, snowmaking systems, and slope construction — a project described as one of the largest of its kind in Norway.

“This is a massive undertaking, both technically and logistically. We have huge volumes of earthworks, very short construction windows, and demanding terrain. But things are going incredibly well so far,” says Stenmoe.

TOTAL CONTRACTOR FOR SNOW, LIFTS AND SLOPES

Taubane Teknikk is responsible for the entire alpine infrastructure — from snowmaking systems and lifts to slope design and groundwork.

The company holds the Norwegian and Swedish agency for Leitner and Demaclenko, and currently has around 25 people working in Narvik Ski Resort.

Among their key partners are Noresund Fjellsprengning, LNS, Taraldsvik Maskin and Flage Maskin, all contributing world-class specialist equipment and expertise.

“We have many highly skilled people in the field, and a strong team of both local and national actors. That’s essential for a project of this scale,” Stenmoe emphasizes.

A VISION FOR THE FUTURE

The development includes several new lifts, stateof-the-art snowmaking, and entirely new slope infrastructure.

One of the highlights is the new family slope — the Panoramic Run — which Stenmoe believes will be transformational for Narvik Ski Resort.

“The family slope will change everything. It makes it much easier for families with children to get started with skiing, and provides a fantastic experience for recreational skiers who want enjoyable carving combined with spectacular views,” he says.

UNIQUE LANDSCAPE – UNIQUE PROJECT

Stenmoe has built many ski resorts before — including projects in Stranda and Hemsedal — but he describes Narvik as something truly special.

“From top to bottom you can see the sea. That’s completely unique on a global scale. This will be a facility that attracts international attention — both technically and visually,” he says.

He describes the development as a prestige project that has already caught interest far beyond Norway’s borders.

“The international attention is significant. This is going to mean a great deal for tourism throughout the entire region,” Stenmoe adds.

A FAMILY-OWNED COMPANY WITH AN INTERNATIONAL NETWORK

Taubane Teknikk is 70 percent owned by Lars Stenmoe and his partner Aud, who is also the company’s general manager. The remaining share is owned by a large international group, which also owns Leitner and Demaclenko. Together they operate the company’s Norwegian and Swedish divisions.

The company supplies everything from children’s lifts to gondola systems, as well as blasting, foundation work, installation and service.

In both Norway and Sweden, Taubane Teknikk is the sole distributor for Leitner and Demaclenko.

“I’ve actually submitted bids for Narvik’s gondola twice before — once in the 90s and again in 2017. Both times we lost. So finally winning the contract now is extremely motivating,” Stenmoe smiles.

THE ROAD AHEAD

This winter, large parts of the easy slope will be completed, including sections of the snowmaking and lighting systems.

Work on the Linken Express and Nordlysheisen lifts continues through winter, while summer 2026 will focus on finishing the remaining lifts, the snowmaking system, and the mountain reservoir at the summit.

“We were on a site visit in September — with northern lights, moonlight and sunset all in the same evening. It sort of sums up the entire project: spectacular from start to finish,” Stenmoe says.

IN NARVIK: TOP ROUTES

1. DOWN FROM LINKEN

Just a few pole pushes from the top of the upper chairlift at Linken, you'll find steep and pristine powder skiing. The route follows the power line downhill—keep to the left. Local experts warn of avalanche risks here. When the terrain flattens out, it's easy to traverse back for another ride on the lift.

2. MØRKHOLLA

Narvik's most famous descent is reached after about a 30-minute hike. Mørkholla is a hollow in the mountainside, forming a bowl-like terrain that traps wind-blown snow from all directions. To reach the classic top section, continue along the ridge from the top chairlift station. From the first summit (Andretoppen), you can glimpse into Mørkholla. However, you’ll need to hike further along the ridge to enter the hollow.

At the top, expect steep and challenging terrain that gradually eases. The valley opens into a vast area where you can choose between sunlit or shaded snow.

3. TREDJETOPPEN – TREDJEHOLLA

A 15–20 minute hike further from the entrance to Mørkholla leads you to a cairn overlooking the hollow. The starting point can be tricky to find, so proceed cautiously. There are two options: to the left or right of a large cornice. Once in the bowl, the descent begins steep and gradually levels out. You'll end up in the same area as the Mørkholla descent.

4. DOWN TO ØRA

This south-facing slope can be accessed from either Andretoppen or Tredjetoppen. Carefully assess avalanche risks. Head skier's left (opposite Mørkholla) and descend wide, open slopes. The route ends in a riverbed, transitioning into dense forest where it's easy to lose your way. You’ll eventually reach the road to Beisfjord and will need transportation back.

5. BLACK KIDS

Local enthusiasts initially intended to create a kid-friendly run to the skier's right of Andrebakken. However, the slope turned out steeper than planned, hence the name. This is a great alternative when the Linken lift isn’t operating. The route also offers opportunities for cliff drops.

The Story Behind Vinterfestuka – A Tribute to Narvik’s Identity

Every March, people of all generations come together. Over ten days, the city is filled with experiences, culture, and a powerful sense of history. Vinterfestuka is a unique tribute to the legacy of the railway workers—the very foundation of Narvik’s identity.

Narvik was born through the construction of the Ofoten Railway, built between 1890 and 1903. The railway made it possible to transport iron ore from Kiruna to the ice-free port of Narvik, laying the groundwork for the city’s growth. The work was carried out by railway workers under harsh conditions and demanding challenges. Vinterfestuka builds on this legacy, weaving together culture, art, and industrial heritage to highlight the city’s roots and its strong ties to the Nordic and Barents regions.

THE 70TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2026

– “IN THE LIGHT OF HISTORY”

In 2026, Vinterfestuka celebrates its 70th anniversary. The anniversary theme, “In the Light of History,” honors the festival’s long heritage and traditions—looking back at the history of both the festival and the city, while also inviting us to look forward. It will be a time to remember the past, celebrate the present, and look ahead to what is yet to come.

THE RENOVATED LOKSTALL1 – A LIVING SYMBOL OF NARVIK’S HISTORY

Lokstall1 is one of the main venues during Vinterfestuka. The building, which once housed locomotives in full operation, has stood alongside the Ofoten Railway for more than a hundred years and is one of Narvik’s most important cultural landmarks. The old engine shed carries the marks of the railway workers’ era—of hard labour, endurance, and the emergence of the city as we know it today.

The building has now undergone a major renovation, where its historical soul has been preserved while being lifted into a new era. It has become a physical expression of what Vinterfestuka represents: preserving history while creating something new. When you enter Lokstall1 during Vinterfestuka 2026, you step into a venue where Narvik’s

story lives in the walls—yet one that also points forward. A place where past and present meet, ready to host new experiences and new generations for the next hundred years.

A FESTIVAL OF GREAT DIVERSITY AND VIBRANT EXPRESSION

Vinterfestuka offers a rich and diverse programme across many artistic forms. The festival places strong emphasis on bringing together both professionals and amateurs, creating a meeting place for local, national, and international artists.

With music, theatre, literature, dance, art exhibitions, conferences, local productions, cross-genre collaborations, and dedicated programmes for children and young people, the festival embraces a wide spectrum of artistic expression. At Vinterfestuka, cultural diversity is given space to shine, and everyone can find their own stage and voice.

THE VITAL ROLE OF CULTURE

In a region marked by long distances, a sense of community can sometimes be challenging to maintain. The festival therefore serves as a cultural hub where people meet, experiences are shared, and traditions are passed on. – From Railway Stop to Ski Icon

High above the Arctic Circle, where winter holds its grip well into summer, lies Riksgränsen – one of Scandinavia’s most legendary ski destinations. Its history is as dramatic as the surrounding mountains, shaped by snow, railways, and pioneering spirits.

Riksgränsen owes its very existence to the Malmbanan, the iron-ore railway connecting the mines of northern Sweden with the port of Narvik. The line opened in November 1902, with a grand inauguration in July 1903, when King Oscar II preferred to travel during the midnight sun rather than in winter darkness.

For decades the railway was the only way to reach Riksgränsen. A proper road, today’s E10, was not completed until 1982. Life in the area was tough. During the 1910s, snowfall became so extreme that the roughly 500 residents abandoned the settlement entirely. ⇨

THE FIRST SKI SCHOOL

A turning point came in 1928, when Friluftsfrämjandet (then Skidfrämjandet) opened the tourist station Lapplandia. Six years later, in 1934, Sweden’s very first ski school was established in Riksgränsen. It was founded by ski pioneers Olle Rimfors and Sigge Bergman, who had studied modern alpine techniques in the Austrian Alps, particularly under the legendary Hannes Schneider in St. Anton.

Rimfors later became sports director at Riksgränsen, a position he held from 1950 for 16 years. Under his leadership, a generation of Swedish ski instructors were trained here – names like Bengt-Herman Nilsson, Karl Erik “KEP” Persson and Ulf “Mr Ski” Edborg became synonymous with skiing excellence. Many of today’s slopes in Riksgränsen still carry their names.

LIFTS AND EXPANSION

The first ski lift in Riksgränsen opened in 1952, followed by an upper section in 1968 that greatly expanded the accessible terrain. Over the following decades, more lifts were built, and today the resort has six lifts serving a vast alpine playground.

OFF-PISTE LEGEND AND MIDNIGHT SUN SKIING

Riksgränsen has long been regarded as Sweden’s ultimate off-piste mountain. Its steep faces, deep snow and wild terrain attract freeride skiers from around the world, and its reputation is backed by numerous awards.

The resort is also unique in offering midsummer skiing under the midnight sun –a surreal experience that combines endless daylight with untouched snow, drawing visitors who want to carve turns at a time of year when most of Europe is basking on beaches.

FROM FRONTIER TO ICON

From a remote railway station on the Swedish-Norwegian border, to an abandoned settlement, and finally to a skiing mecca known worldwide – Riksgränsen’s journey is as remarkable as its landscape. Today it stands not only as a historic cornerstone of Swedish skiing, but as a destination that continues to inspire adventurers and skiers from across the globe.

Things to do with kids

What do you do when the children refuse to put on their skis? Luckily, the entire Narvik region is full of exciting activities for families. Here are some great ideas:

1ARCTIC TRAIN Take the kids on a spectacular ride along the Ofoten Line. Arctic Train brings you 43 kilometers through wild, dramatic and beautiful landscapes up to Bjørnfjell. This is Norway’s northernmost railway, stretching from Narvik in Nordland all the way to Kiruna in Sweden.

The journey from the ice-blue fjord in Narvik up through the mountains is packed with dramatic history from the battles of World War II. With towering mountains, waterfalls, and incredible fjord views, this is one of Norway’s most scenic train rides.

The train makes several stops along the way, and with the “Voice of Norway” app you can listen to stories about the places you pass.

NARVIK WAR MUSEUM

AND NARVIK MUSEUM Narvik War Museum offers tailored experiences for children and youth, including “Kidza på Krigsmuseet” and familyfriendly bunker walks in underground Nazi bunkers. The museum focuses on the Battle of Narvik in April 1940 and helps young visitors understand the dramatic events that shaped the region during 62 intense days of sea battles and mountain warfare.

At Narvik Museum you’ll learn about the city’s origins and industrial development. The main theme is the history of the Ofoten Line, the iron ore transport, the harbour, and the growth of Narvik over more than 100 years. The museum is housed in the former NSB administration building from 1902, surrounded by beautiful scenery.

NARVIK LIBRARY Narvik Library is located in bright and inviting premises by the town square. It’s a natural gathering place for locals — and perfect for families. Here you can read newspapers and magazines, borrow audio books and films, or use public computers.

NARVIK BOWLING AND PLAYLAND

Here you can bowl, play, eat, shoot pool — and have a fantastic time. The playland is a paradise for active kids.

The bowling centre offers 10 lanes, 2 pool tables, shuffleboard and air hockey.

CAVE EXPLORATION (SALANGEN)

In Salangen you’ll find hidden caves carved by the Sagelva River over thousands of years. Join a guided tour into this underground world and experience a true adventure. Together we climb and walk through chambers, rocks and tunnels. A professional guide ensures everything happens safely. NARVIK GONDOLA See Narvik from above! The gondola takes you to the Mountain Restaurant at 656 meters above sea level — the perfect starting point for skiing, ski touring, northern lights experiences, snowshoeing or sledding in winter.

In summer you can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, the midnight sun, or simply take the gondola up for a great meal.

From the upper station you get panoramic views of deep fjords, high mountains, the historic ore harbour and Narvik city — making the gondola ride an experience in itself. Photo: Rune Dahl

POLAR PARK Polar Park is the world’s northernmost wildlife park and home to the large predators and hoofed animals of the North. Here you can meet brown bears, wolves and lynx, as well as moose, red deer, musk ox and reindeer. Predator guiding is free — weekends in winter and daily in summer.

PUMPTRACK (SPRING AND SUMMER) By Jaklamyra you’ll find a fantastic, newly built pumptrack and skate park where kids of all ages can have fun on bikes or skateboards. If you’re skilled enough, you can even ride the whole course without pedaling!

KRAFT CLIMBING HALL The climbing hall has over 500 square meters of climbing surfaces and a 13.5-meter wall suitable for all skill levels. The bouldering room is 3.5 meters high with climbing on four walls and across the ceiling, plus a Moonboard light wall system. Photo: Rune Dahl

Narvik Swimming Hall has a 25-meter pool, a children’s pool, and diving boards at 1, 3 and 5 meters. It is located inside Idrettens Hus.

ICE SKATING

On select Sundays, Nordkraft Arena hosts open skating days. You can rent skates and try fun activities on the ice — with guaranteed perfect conditions.

BUNKER EXPLORATION (SUMMER ACTIVITY) Take the family on an exciting guided journey into narrow, dark underground Nazi bunkers — once filled with soldiers and weapons, now silent reminders of dramatic history.

Armed with flashlights, your guide will lead you safely through two and a half kilometers of terrain, visiting underground gun emplacements, machine-gun nests, ammunition rooms, wet trenches and labyrinth-like tunnels.

The tour follows paths along the Ofot Fjord, where five nations clashed during the Battle of Narvik in 1940. Junior World Championships 2020

March 2020 was set to become a true celebration in Narvik — and it did, at least halfway. The world’s best junior alpine skiers gathered in Narvik Ski Resort for the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships 2020. Everything was in place for ten unforgettable days of sport, culture, and community. And then came Covid.

The event opened with a spectacular ceremony, large crowds on the mountain, perfect snow conditions, and an impressive effort from hundreds of volunteers. Even though the championship had to be cancelled halfway through due to the pandemic, Narvik was left with countless good memories — and strong recognition from both the athletes and the Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS).

Former World Cup star and FIS representative Ken Read praised the excellent racecourses, the compact layout of the venue, and — above all — the incredible effort from the volunteers, calling it the recipe for success.

Narvik 2020 was never completed, but it demonstrated what the city is capable of delivering on the international alpine stage. For many athletes, those days in Narvik were the highlight of their careers so far — and for Narvik itself, it marked the beginning of a journey now pointing toward FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2029.

From March 5–15, 2026, the world’s best junior alpine skiers will gather in Narvik for the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships 2026. In spectacular Arctic surroundings, close to 300 athletes from 50–60 nations will compete for medals and world titles in Downhill, Super-G, Giant Slalom, Slalom, Alpine Combined, and the Team Event.

These athletes, aged 16 to 21, represent the future of the sport. Many of today’s World Cup stars once stood at the start line of the Junior World Championships, and in 2026, Narvik will once again be the arena where new alpine legends are born.

But this championship is more than just a competition. Junior Worlds 2026 is also a crucial dress rehearsal ahead of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2029. It’s a chance to test the venue, infrastructure, organization, and logistics under real championship conditions.

– ready as Chief of Course for the Junior World Championships in Narvik leads the way

On March 5, 2026, the action kicks off in Fagernesfjellet as Narvik once again welcomes the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships 2026. Over ten intense days, the world’s best junior alpine skiers will battle for medals — and Chief of Course Morten Solberg carries the crucial responsibility of ensuring that the slopes meet top international standards.

"The race course will be quite similar to what we used during Junior Worlds in 2020 and the European Cup Finals in 2023,” says Solberg.

“But we’re making some small adjustments, and part of the new snowmaking system will also be in place. That’s a big step forward — it gives us a stable and solid foundation for the championship.”

MORE PEOPLE – GROWING INTEREST

When Narvik last hosted the Junior Worlds in 2020, the mountain was packed with spectators, and interest was high. Solberg is convinced that the 2026 edition will be even bigger.

“Now we also have the 2029 World Championships clearly on the horizon. That adds a new dimension

— both for the spectators and for us as organizers. Junior Worlds 2026 is, in many ways, the first real dress rehearsal for what’s to come,” he says.

NEW LIFTS READY

Although the new World Championship infrastructure in Narvik Ski Resort isn’t fully completed yet, athletes and visitors will already feel the progress this winter.

“The new chairlift up to Linken is ready, and so is the new lift from the treeline up to Øvre. This will give both athletes and the public a much better experience,” explains Solberg.

With new facilities, stronger infrastructure, and growing international attention around Narvik as an alpine destination, everything is in place for the Junior World Championships 2026 to become a true highlight — and a key milestone on the road to FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2029.

Narvik Freeride – Ready to Reach New Heights

From April 30th to May 3rd, Narvik Freeride returns — an extraordinary skiing event in Narvik Ski Resort that brings together freeriders of all ages: children, youth, and adults. This is the season finale for both the Norwegian Freeride Cup and the Freeride World Tour – qualifying series.

Narvik Freeride is far more than a local competition; for the oldest junior categories (U16 and U18), it is part of the Freeride World Tour Junior — a prestigious 3-star event that attracts riders from across the globe.

Last year’s venue was the front side of Narvik Ski Resort, just below Linken, with the finish area in Tredjebakken. Magasin Narvik attended and was thoroughly impressed by the incredible level of skill, especially among the younger participants, who combined technique, control, and fearlessness in every run.

A NEW CAPTAIN AT THE HELM

After several years under the leadership of Micke af Ekenstam and Jan-Arne Pettersen, the event now has new leaders: Tommy Garnes, Alexander Solem and Lars André Uttakleiv.

“After running Narvik Freeride since 2019, we know that our setup and terrain meet international standards. This year, we want to attract even more participants and strengthen the freeride community

The hunt for the big Arctic Char

An adventure — or just a story?

Spring’s great highlight for me is ice fishing on late spring ice.

The elusive Arctic char is the prize — but can it really be caught?

Every year around May or June, I feel an irresistible pull toward the mountains. What calls me is the promise of big fishing experiences, quiet moments on a hidden rocky bank, using my body, resting my eyes on majestic peaks — simply being present. Summer is just around the corner, and this time of year can best be described as that Friday feeling. A long, cold winter is finally behind us, and life outdoors becomes easier.

The big Arctic char also seems to stir at this time of year. Whether that’s true or not,

I can’t say for sure. What is certain is that ice fishing becomes far more comfortable — which means longer, slower days on the ice. With endless daylight, an entire world opens up beneath the frozen surface.

SKI TRACKS AND MIDNIGHT SUN

This time my journey took me to one of the area’s many legendary fishing lakes. The trip began steeply in snow-free terrain, but as the elevation increased, so did the winter. I should have brought skis, I thought as I climbed higher.

Fortunately, the snow was firm after a long spell of mild weather, so walking in hiking

boots worked fine. It was mid-June, and winter still lingered. As usual, my pack was heavier than planned — stuffed to the limit of my 75-liter backpack. The conditions, however, were perfect. As evening faded, the sky cleared, and the midnight sun peeked over the mountains to the west. The air was cold, below freezing, and utterly still. After four and a half hours of walking, I finally arrived. It was past midnight, and even though the urge to fish was strong, I spent the last energy on setting up camp, eating, and sleeping.

The next morning, I was out early to test the lake. It still felt like winter here.

The ice was thick and white, with only a manageable layer of slush. Crossing the lake felt like tiptoeing through a minefield: at times the crust gave way, plunging my boots into 20–30 centimeters of water and slush. I accepted wet feet as part of the deal.

On the far shore, where I had the most faith, old holes and traces from earlier visitors dotted the ice. I drilled a new hole through nearly a meter of ice. The first minutes of jigging are always the most thrilling. Later, the excitement fades if nothing happens. At about 2–3 meters deep, I watched my lure dance in the cold water.

WIND GUSTS AND A FISH ON THE LINE

Within the first hour I had both seen and hooked a fish. A char of about 1.5 kilos won the battle and slipped off the hook — a small tragedy. The rest of the day passed without so much as a sign beneath the ice, no matter how many holes I drilled. That’s how it usually goes when you’re chasing giants: silence, emptiness, the illusion that the lake holds no life at all.

That night was sleepless. A fierce wind shook the tent so hard that rest was impossible. By morning the weather had calmed, and after a quick bowl of oatmeal I tried again. Still nothing. By late afternoon, I decided to break camp and head deeper into the mountains. I needed fish if I was to stay out here for a week — and this lake wasn’t delivering.

OPEN WATER AND A NEW HOPE

Satellite images before the trip showed another lake farther in — ice-free. Perhaps I’d hit the fabled “ice-out bite,” that magical window when the ice has just melted and the fish turn active. I also longed to cast with a spinning rod again.

After a hearty freeze-dried meal, I packed up and spent the evening hiking to the next lake. The trail was beautiful and less demanding. Ptarmigan and reindeer crossed my path, their calves ready for the summer in these high valleys. The snow patches grew sparser as I descended, though the birch trees still stood wintergray.

Four hours later I stood at the shore of the long, narrow lake. The final kilometer through dense brush nearly made me regret everything, but once the tent was up and warmth returned to my body, it was all worth it.

The next morning, the rods were ready. A strong northwest wind limited me to casting spoons, but I held on. Finally, a tug — a tiny 100-gram trout. I laughed. This was the famous ice-out bite? I released it — there had to be something bigger out there.

Moments later, another strike: a nice half-kilo trout, perfect for the pan but not the trophy I was hoping for. At least dinner was secured.

Later, under a clear evening sky and a mirrored lake, the magic finally arrived. A heavy strike near the shoreline — a fat trout of around 1.2 kg, with glowing red flesh. A little further down, another fish. A third followed the lure right to my feet before vanishing. Now it was starting to look like something.

A BRIEF ENCOUNTER WITH A GIANT

The next day the weather shifted again. Rain. I returned to the ice-covered lake to make one last attempt. Wrapped in my bivy, feet freezing, I drilled another hole. The rain hammered against the fabric above me. I was ready to give up.

Then — there it was. A dark blue back slid past my lure and disappeared into the depths. A giant Arctic char, maybe 2–3 kilos. Gone as quickly as it appeared. I waited, heart pounding, but it never returned.

Still, that glimpse alone was worth it.

THE DEFEAT

The rain continued through the night. By morning, fog hung thick over the peaks. I enjoyed my oatmeal slowly in the tent, no longer in a hurry. I tried again at the same spot, but the lake remained silent. Eventually I accepted defeat, packed my gear, and began the long walk back.

On the way down, the birch forest was alive with early summer, greener with every step. I never name the lakes in stories like this. If you recognize the place, it’s our little secret. If not — go explore.

Don’t expect to fill the freezer here. As always, I returned empty-handed from the lake that never gives. And yet I go back, again and again. Perhaps it’s the hope, not the catch, that keeps me returning. The day I finally succeed will be unforgettable. Until then, the story of the big Arctic char remains just that — a story.

The Narvik War Museum is centered around the Battles of Narvik in April 1940, offering insight into the 62 dramatic days of naval battles and mountain warfare. Through objects, interactive digital installations, text, and images, the museum illustrates Nazi Germany’s attack and occupation, and draws lines from the liberation in 1945 to our own time.

The exhibitions encourage reflection on themes such as “us” and “the others,” the value of human life, and how understanding war is essential to building peace.

The museum also offers tailored experiences for children and youth, including “Kidza at the War Museum” and “Family-Friendly Bunker Walks” in underground WWII bunkers.

Museum Nord – Divtasvoudna/ Tysfjord, Kjøpsvik consists of two buildings: the Helland Building and the old sheriff’s residence. Exhibitions in both buildings explore mining and industrial history, cave discoveries, coastal farming and fishing culture, WWII history, and education.

In 1918, the Nordland Portland Cement Factory (NPC) established operations in Kjøpsvik and transformed the village completely. The museum features many objects linked to the cement factory and other local peculiarities—including a wellpreserved 1970s kitchen inside the old sheriff’s house.

Visit Narvik Museum, located in one of the city’s most beautiful historic buildings and gardens. The museum introduces visitors to the founding of Narvik and its dramatic development.

Its main theme is industrial history: the construction of the Ofotbanen railway, iron ore transport by rail, the shipping of ore, and the city’s evolution over more than a century.

The museum is housed in the former administration building of the Norwegian State Railways, a monumental brick structure from 1902 set in scenic surroundings. From the museum and its garden, visitors have excellent views of the harbor, loading facilities, and large parts of the city.

With Norway’s Minister of Digitalisation, Karianne Tung, present, the foundation stone for Stargate Norway was recently laid in Bjerkvik, just north of Narvik. The project marks the beginning of what is being described as Europe’s largest data centre for artificial intelligence – and at the same time, a new industrial adventure for the Narvik region.

Behind the major investment is a collaboration between Aker Nscale and OpenAI, with multibillion-euro investments to be rolled out over the coming years. The ceremonial event brought together, among others, Acting Municipal Director Lars Norman Andersen, Aker Nscale CEO Kristian Røkke, and Executive Vice President at Nordkraft, Eirik Frantzen.

“This is a great day. What is happening here is of enormous importance both locally and regionally. For us, it is about jobs, competence and population growth – absolutely crucial for our future,” said Norman Andersen.

THE OPERATIONAL CORE

Aker has now established Aker Nscale as a 50/50 joint venture. While the company’s headquarters will be located at Fornebu outside Oslo, the operational activities will be based in Narvik – a strategic choice that places the region at the heart of Europe’s AI initiative.

Aker ASA CEO Øyvind Eriksen emphasizes this:

“We are realizing Narvik’s potential and placing Norway at the centre of a new industrial era, in partnership with some of the world’s leading technology environments.”

Kristian Røkke, recently appointed CEO of Aker Nscale, highlights the importance of local engagement:

CLOSE LINKS TO RESEARCH AND EDUCATION

At the same time, the Aker Nscale Innovation Centre was launched – a new research facility established in collaboration with UiT – The Arctic University of Norway, Campus Narvik. This is where education, research and industry will meet to build future expertise in artificial intelligence, energy and digital infrastructure.

Tucked beneath the towering peaks of Swedish Lapland, Abisko Mountain Lodge has long been a beloved base for northern lights and Arctic adventures. But in 2025, the lodge entered a new and ambitious chapter. After the Leander-Engström family took over in May, it’s clear they aim to transform both the lodge and Abisko itself into something truly unique — a place where culture, art, nature, and fine dining meet in the heart of the mountains.

The Leander-Engström name is steeped in Swedish art history. Their ancestor, Per LeanderEngström (1886–1927), was a leading figure in the country’s expressionist movement. He studied under Henri Matisse in Paris in 1909 before bringing modernist ideas back to the north. He found his creative refuge in Abisko, where he built a small cabin surrounded by dramatic Arctic scenery — a place that inspired some of his greatest masterpieces. Today, his work is on display at institutions like Moderna Museet, the National Museum, and Waldemarsudde.

The family’s roots in Abisko run deep. Per’s twin sons, Kjell and Tord, continued the artistic legacy in the area until the late 1970s. During WWII, family members were even born in Abisko. Now, the fourth generation is carrying the torch — not just as hosts of the lodge, but as drivers of a powerful cultural revival.

A BOLD NEW CHAPTER IN ART AND GASTRONOMY

In December, the lodge launched something entirely new: Abisko’s only à la carte lunch. And on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, guests can enjoy the exclusive five-course "Coast to Coast" menu, a culinary journey from Luleå in the east to Narvik in the west. The kitchen

It’s a pilot project, but with big ambitions. The aim is to serve guests who want more — those who seek a deeper and more personal experience of this corner of the north.

VISIONARY EXPANSION PLANS

The lodge is undergoing major development. The existing cabins will be replaced with 20 new rooms across two floors, with suites offering direct views of Lapporten, one of Sweden’s most iconic mountain formations. A 500-square-meter art museum is in the works, with a restaurant upstairs. Eventually, the current lodge building will be rebuilt and tied together with the rest — forming a unified, modern complex.

Where art, nature and legacy meet in Swedish Lapland

The museum will feature two main galleries: one permanent wing showcasing classical Swedish art from northern Sweden — including original works by Leander-Engström, Isaac Grünewald, Sigrid Hjertén, Helmer Osslund, Nils Dardel, and Einar Jolin — and one for rotating exhibitions of modern and contemporary art.

The family currently holds around 40 original works by Per Leander-Engström, many of which will return home to Abisko — the very place they were created. This museum will reunite the art with the landscape that inspired it.

A Year-Round Destination

Abisko Mountain Lodge attracts a wide range of international guests. In summer, hikers and road-trippers pass through. Autumn and winter draw northern lights seekers, photographers and silence lovers. From April to May, heliskiing seasonbrings a more exclusive crowd. Guests come from the UK, Germany, Spain, the U.S., and before the pandemic, many visitors arrived from Asia.

A recent milestone: the lodge was awarded Norrland Gastronomy Award 2025, naming it the best restaurant in the Swedish mountain region, from Sälen and Åre all the way north.

⇨ HÅFJELLET - BALLANGEN

Kjeldebotn and the surrounding areas offer stunning natural landscapes, with Håfjellet (817 meters above sea level) standing out as the most popular destination for outdoor activities year-round. It’s also home to one of Ofoten's finest ski facilities.

Pippira Ski Stadium, located at approximately 200 meters above sea level in Håfjellet, Ballangen municipality, serves as the hub for this impressive ski area. Work on the facility began in the summer of 2011, and by the autumn of 2012, lighting was installed on the 1 km, 2 km, and 3 km loops.

The trail network extends beyond the floodlit sections, descending Håfjellet with loops of varying lengths:

Herjangsfjellet Tur- og Løypelag does an outstanding job of grooming and maintaining ski tracks in the Herjangsfjellet/Veggfjellet area. This location is often regarded as one of the finest cross-country skiing destinations in the region.

The organization operates entirely on a volunteer basis, with funding coming from trail contributions by individuals, clubs, and associations, as well as sponsorships from local businesses.

Ankenes Skiklubb grooms excellent trails throughout the season, ranging from 4 to 7 kilometers in length. The trails are generally spacious enough to accommodate both skating and classic skiing styles. On the mountain, you’ll also find shelters and numerous rest benches.

i Nordland

Musikk i Nordland er en del av Kulturutviklingsseksjonen i Nordland Fylkeskommune. Vi jobber innenfor varierte sjangre og produserer konserter/forestillinger, alene og i samarbeid med andre aktører. Som produsent jobber vi med kunstnerisk utvikling i tillegg til planlegging, koordinering, logistikk, kontrahering og gjennomføring for utøvere, teknisk personell og arrangører.

Det er et mål at våre produksjoner skal ha kvalitet i alle ledd ved å være grundig gjennomarbeidet enten det kommer til kunstnerisk innhold, fremføring, produsentoppgaver eller markedsføring. Musikk i Nordland ser spesielt etter utvikling av konsepter som kan bidra til at det komponeres ny musikk, formidles en kulturarv eller for å fremme mangfold og de unges stemmer.

Musikk i Nordland er en del av Landsdelsmusikerne i Nord-Norge der vi sammen skal gi et bredt tilbud til hele landsdelen med målsetting om å skape store opplevelser på små steder. Våre faste musikere og produksjonsteam skal gjennom sitt daglige virke i Narvik være bidragsytere til fagmiljøet i regionen. I tillegg sysselsetter vi 70-130 innleide pr. år på enkeltproduksjoner med formål om å bruke rett musiker til rett program eller hente inn komplementerende kompetanse (f.eks. lys/lyd/regi/ koreograf/andre kunstuttrykk).

Sammen med vår vertskapskommune jobber vi med HJERTESLAG- kulturnettverk i Narvik. Samarbeid mellom kulturaktører skal gjøre det mulig å skape i større skala enn hva vi får til hver for oss. Musikk i Nordland er en del av merkevaren Arctic Pulse sammen med våre partnere i Norge, Sverige og Finland. For tiden jobber vi med interregAurora prosjektet Arctic Music Circle som skal få musikkulturen i det arktiske Europa til å sirkulere over landegrensene.

Season finale with style

“Ta Sjansen” has long since become a beloved end-of-season tradition at Narvik Ski Resort — and last year’s edition was no exception. The final Saturday of the ski season was celebrated with sunshine, laughter, acrobatics, and a proper spring plunge.

Even though the snow conditions were among the best in years, the weekend marked the official end of the winter season. The mountainsides were bathed in sunlight, and the atmosphere was anything but melancholic as athletes and spectators gathered for an unforgettable day in the mountains.

The legendary water ramp for “Ta Sjansen” was waiting. Here, everything from swim trunks to wildly creative costumes made their appearance before participants either skimmed gracefully across the water—or disappeared in a spectacular belly flop to the roar of the crowd.

A perfect season finale — exactly as it should be at Narvik Ski Resort: playful, informal, and bursting with energy.
