WELCOME We are thrilled to celebrate the 69th season of polo at Eldorado. This year promises to be one of our most fun and exciting seasons ever. Over the summer, we focused our efforts on field renovations to ensure the best winter playing conditions possible. We are eager to kick off games and tournaments, starting with the revival of fall polo and the historic Go Honey and Road Runner tournaments. This season’s tournament lineup includes 12 Goal, 8 Goal, 6 Goal, 4 Goal, 2 Goal, Women’s and Junior tournaments, as well as two club leagues, Coachella and Stagecoach, and an arena polo program. We offer the opportunity for players of all skill levels, ages, and genders to participate at a level that best suits their needs. We are proud to be one of the only polo clubs in the nation to offer such a diverse polo program. New to our tournament line up are three prestigious United States Polo Association national tournaments: the National 8 Goal; the Bronze Trophy 12 Goal; and the National Amateur Cup 2 Goal. As president of the board of directors, Mike has had a hand in just about everything—from the early Lake Farms days to rebuilding the Cantina, navigating deals with Goldenvoice, and helping ensure Eldorado’s future. His impact runs deep, and so do the stories that come with it.

Beginning in the Midwest Mike’s polo journey began far from the desert, at the Tri-State Polo Club near Chicago in 1969. At the time, he was focused on hunter-jumper riding—until he was handed one of Michael Butler’s polo ponies. The moment the horse moved beneath him, Mike was hooked. “It was the handiest thing I’d ever ridden,” he recalls. That ride changed everything, leading him to arena polo under Pat Connors and, eventually, to a lifelong love of the sport. Though his professional life kept him busy, Mike found his stride in Eldorado’s seniors’ tournaments after turning 50. Those years remain among his favorite in polo. Players arrived from across the globe— Scotland, England, and Argentina among them. The Earl of Morton and his wife Sheila brought humor and charm; the Argentine contingent hosted an unforgettable asado at the Clubhouse. Evenings were filled with Calcuttas, Henry Trione’s renditions of “Paddlin’ Madeleine Home,” and Paul Von Gontard’s endearing German-accented game commentary: “clippetty clops and clopetty clips.” Golf outings, organized by Alex Jacoy at clubs like Andalusia and Rancho La Quinta, added to the camaraderie. Alex Jacoy and Susan Stovall, who ran the club at the time, kept the social calendar full and the atmosphere lively.

Rebuilding the Cantina

Long before Eldorado became the iconic polo destination it is today, it existed as a vision under the Lake Farms banner. The group—22 shares held by 19 owners—was a mix of players, friends, and investors committed to building a polo presence in the Coachella Valley.

The original Cantina—beloved, modest, and steeped in club history— burned down in an electrical fire in 2009. The loss hit the community hard. The insurance payout wasn’t enough to rebuild, and the club faced a difficult decision: restore the Cantina or let it become a memory.

Mike, then one of the youngest players in the senior’s league, built strong friendships with many of the shareholders. When Patrick Brent listed his shares for sale, Mike had the opportunity to join the group. With the blessing of shareholders like Henry Trione and Paul Von Gotard, he became part of the core ownership and eventually rose to serve as President of Lake Farms. In 2011, when John Clark stepped down, Mike also took on the presidency of Eldorado Polo Club. The late Susan Stovall often credited Lake Farms with anchoring polo in Southern California. “Each owner, in their own way, made very special contributions to Eldorado,” she said. “They did this for the love of polo— and they made our facility possible for many future generations.”

For Mike, the answer was clear. A club needs a heart, a place to gather, laugh, and connect—and that place was the Cantina. Even as some doubted that a new building could capture the spirit of the old one, he believed new memories would fill the space. Mike stepped forward with a loan large enough to finish the project. Working closely with Club Manager Jan Hart, he helped guide the design and construction. When the Cantina reopened, the celebration was exactly what he’d envisioned: a packed house, renewed friendships, and a sense that Eldorado’s heart was beating again.

The Next Generation Takes the Reins Now, Mike is preparing to sell his desert property and step back from the Board of Directors. He sees fresh energy rising within the club and believes the time is right for new leadership to guide Eldorado forward. Thanks to the leases secured with Goldenvoice, he feels confident polo will thrive well into the future. Mike leaves with gratitude, pride, and a lifetime of memories. And as he looks toward what comes next, he offers a simple wish for the club’s next chapter: that great polo—and the community that surrounds it— continues to flourish at Eldorado Polo Club.

Goldenvoice and a New Era Goldenvoice’s interest in Eldorado began modestly—they wanted to buy one or two Lake Farms shares. Mike spent long hours meeting with founders Paul Tollett and Skip Paige, both avid supporters of polo (Tollett even rode Mike’s horses). But conversations soon evolved. Goldenvoice didn’t want just a piece of the property—they wanted it all. Lake Farms had never been a speculative venture; the owners had invested for the love of polo. Yet with members aging and Goldenvoice making a compelling offer, the timing aligned. After extensive negotiations, the group agreed to sell the club property. And at the same time, Mike also secured long-term leases to ensure polo would continue on the grounds into the future.

Leveling Up What is it about polo that connects people from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines? For Katie Boissicat Randall, Phoebe Champion, and Colby Zahedi, it’s the polo challenges as well as the rewards, the amazing polo ponies, and the community bonds that keep them leveling up at Eldorado.

JUMPING & BUMPING Katie Boissicat Randall A birthday gift from her husband introduced Katie to a new sport and a community of horse lovers that she never knew existed. Within a few years, Katie became a talented equestrian multi-tasker, mastering the art of a good polo ride-off and having fun in the show ring. What led you to Eldorado? I was a regular in the desert, competing with my jumper at the show park when Jared Sheldon invited me to visit the polo club. I have been a member ever since! Eldorado is like polo Disneyland. I’m on a horse 6 or 7 days a week, multiple times a day. Everyone is so friendly and there’s such a great community, whether you’re riding sets on the track or meeting at the Cantina after a game.

Who are your mentors? I really lucked out with the people I met when I started to play. Fran, Santos, Jared, and Lee are an amazing group of trainers and players from Menlo and South Bay Polo Clubs. I’m lucky enough to call all of them my friends. I hit the lottery jackpot with this group! What do you find most challenging about polo? I’m always learning. I’m working on riding, the rules…everything! I feel like I haven’t even reached chapter one of my polo career; I’m still in the prelude. I find the level of contact in polo to be challenging—it makes me a little nervous. In the jumpers, we ride big spooky horses that have a bubble around them and it’s the opposite on the polo field. And most rewarding? I love working together as a team and getting to know everyone and how they play. The dream team for me is when we walk off the field knowing that we worked well together. That happened so much for me in Coachella League…all my teams were dream teams! How do you balance showjumping and polo? My riding foundation from jumpers definitely helps my polo. And polo helps my jumping because it makes me bolder. These polo ponies are so fast—they give me some cojones when it comes to competing in the jumper ring! I love the technicality of the jumpers, but I love the team aspect and thrill of polo. Both share the love of the horse and that’s the ultimate for me.

POOL TO PITCH Phoebe Champion Phoebe always dreamed of picking up a polo mallet. After being sidelined from her water polo career during COVID, she knew it was the perfect time to give polo a try. Five years later, Phoebe’s surname rings true— she has been a champion in a host of tournaments, including the 2025 Pacific Coast Governor’s Cup. Who are your polo mentors? Tavi Usandizaga has been an extremely supportive teammate and coach who has seen me through my highest and lowest points. Abby Riggs has been incredible with strategic coaching, especially with respect to my effectiveness in mixed polo. Jared Sheldon always seems to have time for everyone, for which I’m so grateful. George Dill, Kevin Ittig, Tim Kelly, Elizabeth Humphreys and Martin Tassara have also been strong pillars of support. What polo advice do you have for others? My biggest takeaway from all these players is that one size doesn’t fit all. Literally and figuratively. This applies to technique, coaches, horses, gear— it’s important to try everything in order to figure out what works best for you.

What do you find most challenging about polo? Where do I begin?! Polo is extremely demanding on your body, resources, and self-control. Learning a new sport in my 30s has taught me and humbled me so much. It is a growth experience I would recommend to everyone! What do you love about polo? Everything! It’s the pinnacle of human experience to work with the language barrier between species. Multiply that challenge by 16, the number of human and equine bodies on the field at one time, and it’s incredible. Successfully learning to navigate the game with both twoand four-legged teammates is deeply rewarding. The polo community is so wonderful and diverse; the sport connects and unites so many different people. Any future polo plans? Play more! I’d like to see how good I can become as a player and horsewoman. I enjoy experimenting with new gear and techniques, and I have a different perspective on change coming from water polo. I wonder what other strategy and tech developments we can borrow from other sports.

FAMILY RITUALS Colby Zahedi After a false start in polo when his dad, Sy Zahedi, took up the sport, Colby Zahedi returned to polo with passion and determination. He now finds himself more enthralled than ever, and the best part is, he is surrounded by a community of family and friends. How did you get started? I first took lessons at OC Polo Club at the same time my dad started playing. I was recovering from a football injury, and my dad thought it would be fun to try polo together. I didn’t really take to it at the time though, and I continued to play competitive football throughout high school and college. A few years later, I spent the summer with my dad at the Santa Barbara Polo Club. Juan and Sierra Curbelo had just taken over management of my dad’s polo operation, and they encouraged me to help with riding sets. I told them I didn’t know how to ride, and they said that they would teach me. At the beginning, Juan didn’t even let me have a saddle! He said that I had to ride bareback to build a strong foundation. Eventually I started doing stick and ball lessons and I fell in love with the sport. What do you find most challenging about polo? Horsemanship is still something I am trying to master. Everyone tells me that 90% of the game is the riding, so I’m always trying to improve. Anyone can swing a mallet and hit the ball; horsemanship is really the gamechanger. What do you love most about the sport? I’m fascinated by the polo community. I’ve met so many friendly and amazing people from all walks of life. It’s really competitive on the field but after the game is done everyone is in the Cantina sharing drinks, food, and stories. How does family play into your polo? Last year my dad and I played in the 8 Goal and it was the first time we played in the “big league” together. It was so amazing and surreal to play with him. I realize that I am very lucky; a lot of people aren’t able to do something like this with their dad. Juan and Sierra are also like family, and it means a lot to have them at every game. Best polo advice? Take your time and don’t rush the process. Everyone wants to play high goal on field one, but you really have to do your due diligence to get there. You have to surround yourself with good quality people and trust that they will guide you in the right direction.

Hor se power BUILDING A POLO STRING

Horsepower defines a polo player’s game, so building the perfect string is the most important investment a player will make. A “string” is the collection of polo horses (referred to as “ponies” due to their historically smaller size) that each player assembles and plays. There are three primary ways to build a string: by purchasing “made” or fully trained ponies; by purchasing young horses and training them; or by breeding and raising homebred polo ponies. How a player comes to build his or her string is one of the most fascinating, and somewhat uncharted, facets of the sport.

MADE PONIES The vast majority of polo players, especially those who are new to the sport, choose to purchase “made” (fully trained) ponies from experienced players and sellers. These ponies can range from five to fifteen years of age and even beyond, depending on their soundness, health, and temperament. Most players have a good idea of what they’re looking for in a pony; size, build, breed, and even color may factor into their search criteria. Professional player Gabriel Saccullo runs a polo pony sales operation and believes that his role involves more than just buying and selling; ultimately, he is a matchmaker: “If a horse is perfect for one person, then it probably isn’t for someone else. It’s up to me to show every horse to the right person.” Saccullo gleaned his matchmaking skills from professional player and horseman Luis Saracco, who encouraged him to always watch a player ride and play before offering them a sale horse to try. Saccullo considers three factors when buying ponies for his operation: their size, their hooves, and how easy they will be to sell. He prefers ponies that measure around 15.2 hands—if they are much bigger, they’re harder to hit the ball off of and, by extension, harder to sell. Next, Saccullo looks at their hooves. He believes that a pony’s hooves are the primary indicator of health. Finally, Saccullo considers how suitable a horse will be for his clientele; “I usually have a few people in mind for a horse before I buy it,” he admits. After years in the industry, professional trainers Bryan and Carin Middleton have also learned many lessons about buying and selling ponies. Carin suggests that it is typically a safer investment to purchase made ponies versus green (inexperienced) ponies: “Buying a young horse is always a risk. They can look the part but not have the mental capability for the sport. If you buy a pony that is already playing, they have been tested under pressure, so you have a better idea of what you’re getting.” Carin also believes that the management that ponies receive (known as their “program” or routine of feeding, care, training, and exercise), plays a critical role in their success: “With buying and selling, there comes a transition period for horses moving into new barns or programs. Everyone manages their polo string differently, and this ultimately impacts how well a pony will play.”

TRAINING Purchasing young horses and training them to play polo is another common way to build a string. In North America, the largest source of polo pony prospects are the thoroughbred and quarter horse racing industries. Experienced horse trainers keep close tabs on the everchanging selection of racehorses for sale; typically, they are looking for horses ranging from three to five years of age, who are suitable for retraining and playing polo. There is an art to sourcing polo pony prospects. Some swear by long-standing industry connections and insider sources, while others rely on social media groups and connections. Local polo pony trainer Hope Kerley describes the process as an ongoing labor of love: “Buying pony prospects online is a bit like going to the casino because it’s hard to know what you’ll get. But I love to do it anyway, and I’m always scrolling for my next horse. There’s something special about finding and training thoroughbreds; it’s incredibly rewarding.” If all goes smoothly, it takes two to three years to train an offtrack thoroughbred for polo. Retraining often means contending with someone else’s training foundation; sometimes you get lucky on a horse with a great foundation, but it’s not uncommon to get horses that have only been taught to run in a straight line. Retraining thoroughbreds is considered to be an economical alternative to buying made ponies. For Malia McCoy, who has been training her own polo ponies for thirty years, the investment levels out

in the end: “You really aren’t saving any money by training your own horses, considering the years of care, time, and investment. Training your own is more like a payment plan for building your string.” It is, however, a cheaper alternative to breeding and can result in a great connection between pony and rider. “It’s amazing to bond with a pony through training; it gives me confidence because I know all of their ticks and limits,” adds McCoy. That said, not every prospect ends up in a polo string. Kerley gives her prospects thirty days before deciding whether she needs to find them a good home away from polo. McCoy gives her prospects several years for retraining, as she enjoys spending extra time on each one. As a result, she has only had to rehome three horses, “It’s never an easy decision. I tend to stick it out with young horses longer than any sane person would,” she laughs. From jumping to trail rides and cattle work, both Kerley and McCoy believe that the more a young horse is exposed to, the better adapted they will be in the long run. When it’s time for them to start playing chukkers, it is important that they have a confident and quiet rider on their back—and it’s not a job for just anyone. As McCoy points out, “you never want to put a horse in a situation where they have a bad experience in their first chukkers.” From there, it’s a question of exposure to the game, and allowing time to let the training sink in. “They’ll let you know when they are tired and need a break, or when they are ready to be pushed more. You can feel it. It’s in their body language,” Kerley remarks.

BREEDING For players who are committed to polo long-term, breeding is one of the most rewarding ways to build a string. Breeding requires infrastructure, experience, and of course the right mare and stallion, which means that it is a time-consuming and costly endeavour. The Coachella Valley is home to several stallions and breeding operations. Managed by the Galindo and Leary Families, G & L Ranch is renowned for its top stallions, and for training and selling dozens of quality polo ponies over the past several decades. Their current top stallion, Playboy, has earned numerous Best Playing Pony honors, and has produced equally impressive offspring. Cybele Jordan’s operation in Thermal, Rancho Remuda, also offers services by polo stallion Sargeant Mesquite, as well as artificial insemination by Sergeant Pepper. Horse trainer, player, and professional USPA umpire Catlin Dix took to breeding after spending time in Australia, where she worked on a ranch with an exceptional homebred program. “I felt there was a different feel to the horses that came from a generational program,” she suggests. Returning stateside with a few Australian mares, Dix was inspired to start her own breeding operation with the help of her mom Suzy. Dix’s prized stallion, Yellowstone, has bloodlines that she considers to be some of her greatest work. His sire, Brumby, was played by Julio Arellano in the U.S. Open, and his dam, Mamba, was purchased from Dix by Adolfo Cambiaso. Through Yellowstone, Dix is able to carry this line forward for generations of polo players to come. Eldorado’s Bush League polo team recently began breeding with the help of Kerri and Hope Kerley at Mission Polo Farm. The team had a few favorite mares that they were attached to, and they wanted to carry that

talent into the next generation of their string. Kerri suggests that while the breeding process is a test of patience and chance, it also yields the greatest rewards: “You don’t know what type of pony you have for at least three years, and anything can happen during that time. But if you have the patience and that special horse, it’s a completely worthwhile experience!” One of the most important decisions when it comes to breeding is the selection of a stallion. Some experts suggest that the stallion determines more of the physical attributes to offspring, while the mare contributes personality and temperament. Kerri Kerley chose to breed her top mare, aptly named Hi-Top, to Pelon Escapite’s stallion Milan based on his temperament and talent. For Catlin Dix, the selection of a stud is instinctual; “When I met the stallion Whitey, I knew that he was the one. He had a ton of presence, great movement, and beautiful head carriage. He proved to be a great choice—the first two horses I had by him played in the U.S. Open.” Raising and training homebreds requires absolute patience. Foals are very impressionable, and proper handling is imperative to their development. Handled appropriately, they become increasingly comfortable with human interaction over the first few years. Many trainers choose to introduce the saddle, then bridle, and often the polo mallet, shortly thereafter. The next step is introducing the pony to stick and ball practice, usually by 3 years of age. No matter their age, Catlin Dix does not graduate any homebreds to the polo field until they have had extensive exposure to ranch work; a technique honed by legendary horseman Tommy Wayman, who had great success in turning working ranch horses into high-goal polo ponies. While breeding and training homebreds requires great diligence, hard work, patience, time, and investment, Dix also describes it as one of the most gratifying undertakings in polo, “When you breed your own, you’re extra committed to them, and when that commitment pays and plays, it’s the ultimate reward!”
