Mixologists have become high-profile creatives for new libations but also give testament to the enduring popularity of the classics.

Make Your Escape
Fun and interactive, this unique venue is located in Old Town Scottsdale. Make an evening with friends to, collectively, do your best to escape a room. It is a real-life adventure game designed for small groups of friends, families, co-workers or strangers to find hidden objects, figure out the clues and solve puzzles to earn freedom and “escape the room.” Each game lasts 60 minutes and is a surefire way to get to know everyone in the group.
Reservations are required. Groups as small as two are welcomed as well, with 10 the maximum in a single room.
Eat and Be Merry
Arizona Food Tours’ tasty experiences are rated as among the top adventures in the Phoenix area. Old Town Scottsdale is one of two locations (Tempe is the other) where it offers its dinner and lunch food tours. The dinners are three-hour progressive tours that take guests to visit some of the best restaurants in the area. Sample various dishes, drink pairings with courses and learn from top local chefs. Restaurants include AZ88, Malee’s Thai Bistro, EVO, and 5th and Wine. Private tours and gift certificates are available to share the fun.

The Valley is home to many dog parks and play areas. Dogs make up a great part of the vicinity’s population, with the area characterized by homes with big yards, canals to walk on, tree-lined streets to stroll and mountains to climb. It’s five on a Friday and the glug-glug sound of liquid into glass is on the brain and pulling you to the nearest superb place to escape for a cocktail.
Waiting there will be a bartender, or mixologist, or drink artist, or whatever you want to call the person charged with doing the important work of assembling flavorings and spirits in combinations we like to call cocktails. You needn’t look far to find this person. The thriving restaurant scene that has enlivened Arcadia, Biltmore, Scottsdale and Paradise Valley over the last decade has also birthed a busy cocktail bar landscape.
Within this growing cocktail world, patterns emerge. Shifts can occur in preferences for sweet or sour, dirty or straight or bitter. Or maybe atmosphere is more valued than before. In looking at some of the trends dominating cocktail bars right now, answers largely depend on whom you ask. It’s fluid … But some indisputable commonalities exist. Whether you seek a balm for your sorrows, a release from work stress, or a place with a comforting glow in which to commune with your smartphone, one thing is for sure: the Happy Hour crowd has gone back to the basics with a taste for the simple components of tried-and-true cocktails that date back decades. Newfangled showoff drinks get consumed, for sure, but the classics
still reign, according to those who would know.
Lead mixologist Eddie Garcia at Jade Bar, the cozy Paradise Valley retreat at Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort, says although Jade offers new and exciting cocktails, “the classics never go out of style.”
“There are still plenty of Old Fashioned and Manhattan drinkers,” he says.
“Even our own classics such as the Fiery Mandarin and Grapefruit Basil are common. Simple is often the order of the day, although our newest, classic Tiki selection has been received well. In the end, fashions may go out of style but style never goes out of fashion.”
John Christie, the head barman at Second Story Liquor Bar in Scottsdale who’s been behind the stick for more than 20 years, says he has seen a shift in the local drinking patterns in recent years toward “more classic-style cocktails.” He says, “People seem to enjoy the style we provide here at Second Story. The focus is kind of a ‘Mad Men’ style of drinking and lounging in a classy cool environment.
I think this comes from a return to the basic components of great well-balanced cocktails without lots of frills.”
“The Moscow mule, the Old Fashioned and the Manhattan are some examples of what we like to call jumping-off points,” says Jason Asher, who heads up Counter Intuitive’s menu development
and implementation, and mentors its bartenders. He also consults on 150 restaurants and bars a year in Arizona as director of craft spirits and mixology for Young’s Market Company of Arizona. “Those cocktails help the consumer to feel comfortable and allow the bar to capture their audience.”
Trends aren’t confined to whatever mixologists are putting together in a glass at the moment. Take attitudes, for example. Asher says there has been a big shift. “Bartenders have finally realized that it is not necessarily the liquid in the glass that means the most ... it is the overall guest experience,” he says. “The idea of a warm welcome, sincere service and a gracious goodbye was a thing of the past several years ago. This trend of pretentiousness has finally subsided and the cocktail community is truly embracing the idea of customer service.”
No doubt you can’t have a good cocktail experience without the top-flight customer service. Fellowship, whether with friends, bar strangers or restaurant staff, does have its place in cocktail culture. A visit to the bar can serve to soothe the anxiety of the day, but the

Whisky also helps. Brian Goodwin, beverage director at The Gladly in Phoenix and Citizen Public House in downtown Scottsdale, says the whisky explosion, which was just getting started when The Gladly opened in 2013, is still going strong.
“We’re a huge whisky bar here,” Goodwin says. “There doesn’t really seem to be much of a burst in the bubble on

The Gladly trains bartenders to learn 50 classic cocktails in 90 days. “It’s a good broad scope for them to build on,” Goodwin says. After the bartenders have a firm grasp of the classics, they can start getting creative.
As for the future, it will be besotted with mezcal (“I think it’s going to surge here,” says Goodwin), and tiki cocktails and rum are making a cool resurgence,
vodkas, or, as Goodwin calls them, “one-trick ponies.”

One of the special characteristics of our community is the wonderful artwork prominently on display — which many of us probably take for granted as we drive past every day.
Particularly striking is the sculpture adorning a length of Goldwater Boulevard just north of Indian School Road.
“Tributary Wall,” created by Kevin Berry,
features seven fish that range in length from nine feet to 18 feet. Made of steel, they have been treated with a natural, oxidized rust patina. The fish “swim” on a wall whose serpentine design symbolizes the flow of water, with the alternating arrangement of smooth and split-faced rock representing a water wave pattern.
“Horseshoe Falls” is the name of the sculpture on the south side of Indian School at Marshall Way in downtown Scottsdale. Artist Michael Maglich created this with 4,500 horseshoes, and he describes it as a “non-equestrian equestrian structure.” He sees it as symbolically dividing the galleries of mostly contemporary art of the Marshall Way/Stetson Drive area from those of
more traditional Western art found in the Main Street area.
There’s an aesthetic significance to even the bus shelters along Indian School Road in downtown Scottsdale, which were also created by Michael Maglich. The roof of these shelters, based on the design of the shelter covering the ruins of Casa Grande, is supported by two slender posts rising from concrete standards and seems to float at night. “The benches and standards are modeled after historical markers,” explains Maglich. Quotes on each of the four sides of the support standards are all travelrelated, and the sources range from the Bible to Jimi Hendrix’s “Cross-Town Traffic”: “All you do is slow me down and I got better things on the other side of town.”

Flipping over Arcadia

With our housing market so well known, it is no surprise that a local company made up of creatives, entrepreneurs and family has made it to the national scene. Rafterhouse is a home remodeling company that is full service, focused on finding, restoring and upgrading homes in the Arcadia area. The company’s designers have an affinity for the ranch-style homes, and their meticulous touches and authentic appeal are what is making them so successful. What Rafterhouse does is more than simply “flipping houses.” “Because it is such a desirable neighborhood, we only work in Arcadia,” says Austin King, coowner of Rafterhouse. In keeping with the aesthetic, King notes, “Even if we tear something down, we update it but rebuild back to the original charm.”
The company puts heart and soul into each project, and it has garnered critical and national acclaim. Its concept was captured in a television show of the same name — “Rafterhouse” — that aired in October on HGTV. It was a pilot episode, so more may be coming. Local breweries and pubs are popping up, creating not only a vast variety of tasty beers but also bringing together the community in these local hangouts.
No example is better than O.H.S.O. Eatery + nanoBrewery. What gets you through its door is a fun and inviting atmosphere, and what keeps you there is a wide selection of its own beers as well as local Arizona favorites. Step outside to the backyard patio that opens up to the Arizona Canal and you’ll find a super dogfriendly area complete with water bowls and a dog washing area to keep your pup happy on even the hottest days. To quench your thirst, try the White Chocolate Ale from Sonoran Brewing Company and Orange Blossom from Papago Brewing — both of which have unique flavors and a smooth finish. Food at O.H.S.O. is full of artful favorites, but be sure to make the trip on the weekends for a combo of select beer and brunch items for $10.

For those not-so-avid beer drinkers, deciding to venture outside of a lager and into a craft beer can be confusing. The major differentiating factors between beer types are how the beer is fermented as well as the types of the three main ingredients — malt, barley and hops.
Pale ales are predominantly lighter-color beers that are made with a pale malt (hence the name). Your trendy India pale ales (IPAs) fall into this category, and, although they range in strength and taste, they’re traditionally pretty hoppy and bitter. Porter beers (similar to stout) are dark

On the east side of Scottsdale Road sits Bad Water Brewing. Started in 2012, Bad Water is known for its Saison beer. Saison (also referred to as a farmhouse ale) is an ale that was traditionally brewed in the winter. Bad Water’s Saison has a light, almost fruity taste with little bitterness.
